Yeah this is spot on. The R value and function of a sleeping pad is really underrated. Every time I take a beginner out camping I make sure to get them on a great pad. This is the biggest difference maker on them wanting to go back out!
What I would always recommend is a good pillow. Also, trying out and experimenting until you achieve the ulimate sleep quality for you. You can do this anywhere where you have a spot to lay down on a sleeping pad. You always have to take into account that outdoors, the ground might be not totally flat, and there are always different sounds going on. The majority of my gear came from amazon, so exchanging components was very unproblematic. I went through 4 sleeping pads until I found the best one for me.
The only piece of gear I wouldn't cut costs on is the sleeping pad. A good warm sleeping pad can make a lousy sleeping bag work well.

@@jason_alden in my opinion if you have a chance to spend $200 on your sleeping pad do it.
Yeah I agree. A good sleeping system makes one hell of a difference. Getting a good nights rest makes everything more enjoyable!

This is super helpful. I camped for the first time a few weeks ago, and now I really want to get into backpacking. Thanks!

Teton is pronounced 'Tee-Tawn.' It is named after the Grand Tetons mountains in Wyoming. Right next to Yellowstone. Backpack there!
