    I am from America. As I turn 75 yoa, and am losing my battle with inoperable cancer, I listen to Finlandia daily. It always brings tears to my eyes, which I believe cleanses one's soul. I don't fear death, I accept it. I will continue listening to most beautiful piece of music ever written, as long as GOD gives me life.

      This song is about freedom and the perseverance of self governance no matter how difficult it might get sometimes. This might encapsulate the Finnish "SISU" mentality. I'm African-American and, to my knowledge, not Finnish at all. We American Christians know this tune as the hymn "Be Still, My Soul"; the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, whose album my mother owned, also sang this tune as "On Great Lone Hills". We chose "Be Still, My Soul" as a hymn for Mom's funeral in 2006. Later during the service, the pianist, an Afr-Am man, let loose with a fuller treatment of "Finlandia", and I started weeping. Guess what? I'm listening to this video now--and I'm weeping again!
    I heard or read a story, decades ago, that during the Russian occupation, Finns would go to a concert, attended by Russian guards, and would leave at the concert's "end". When the Russians were gone, the Finns would sneak back to the concert hall to listen to "Finlandia", a censored work at the time!

      @coosoorlog 7 років тому +36

      the lyrics were written over 40 years afterwards, during which time Finland had had it's first parliamentary elections under russian rule, then gained independence, fought civil war, experienced other political turmoil and gradual stabilization and democratic development, and then winter war started and the lyrics were written at the end of that war. they're good lyrics and do reflect the spirit of the music and its original intent but often people misunderstand the historical context.
      reminds me of the star-spangled banner, which was written in 1814 (during the war of 1812); people generally think the lyrics refer to the war of independence (and the surely can, and practically do but not originally) but they were written about a certain battle in the war of 1812.

    Even though the english lyrics shown here in the video somewhat represent what is being said, the official translation by Keith Bosley shows the lyrical beauty of Finlandia pretty well. It always brings tears to my eyes when the singing starts.
    Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning,
    the threat of night has now been driven away.
    The skylark calls across the light of morning,
    the blue of heaven lets it have its way,
    and now the day the powers of night is scorning:
    thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours!
    Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest
    thy head now crowned with mighty memory.
    Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest
    that thou hast thrown off thy slavery,
    beneath oppression´s yoke thou never liest.
    Thy morning´s come, O Finland of ours!

      I always thought they should rearrange this for the official national anthem of Finland. Many others in Finland share this feeling with me - that this is the true national anthem and always has been. This exemplifies the REAL Finnish spirit instead of the German papal march written by a German we currently have as the national anthem.
