This vid is all about playing simple and effective short drum fills, starting on beat 4 of the bar. These are some seriously real-world drum fills that I'd use over and over again on a gig! This is awesome! Thank you SO much. I'm 67 & just started this drumming venture. This is the most helpful video of all I've watched. You have a great teaching style!! 👍👍👍
He is good and glad to hear I'm not alone I'm also 67 and just started. Actually started at 66 on my own got overwhelmed with all on you tube so signed for in person lessons at guitar center benn at it 2 months and have seen a difference so good luck on your journey.
My oldest student was 84 when he started, still playing at 90. Both of you are no age! In any case, age in itself is simply and emphatically NOT the variable of success - application, effort and willingness to do the work and the most important factors by far influencing success/happiness in this game (and most other games too IMO). Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
I am a beginner and find your method of teaching is the best on you tube. Thanks for donating your time to helping others who maybe can’t afford private lessons.
Amazing video, gives a lot of inspiration to beginner. Love vibe of grooving and doing fills in time. Keep up the great content! Maybe some fill video with stuff like giving some showcase of the most popular fills in modern pop/rock music to show some great options for 1beat/2beat/4beat fills?
One if my favourite is just 2 crotchet beats on the snare- not a flam, and it comes after beat four in between the next bar sort of. I don’t know how to say it but I hope you know what I mean
Mr. Mike Barnes, an absolutely fantastic and superior lesson. Beat 4 fill variations. Well explained, shown how to count out and play the rythms. Thanks so much bro for your hard work and sharing your knowledge and skills with the world wide drumming community regardless of where anyone is at in their skill level. Brilliant bro! Brilliant!
I think you have the best teaching method. I just happened to see your site last week, and I've been hooked ever since. good visual setup, it's like being there live, easy to see everything. also very good tips on playing the song you are teaching. absolutely a great way to learn drums.***********
Great vid, funny you mention the snare and crash, I’ve found over the last year or so that I go into almost every drum fill with a snare and crash, I find that crash & snare accent always brings the fill to life just before it happens, hard thing to explain but I’ve found I do it all the time now! Oh and I’ve found using fills which actually include the hi-hat can be really good when used in the right song, I used one all the way through the cover of Ordinary World by Duran Duran and it fits the song beautifully! 🎵🎶👍
Mike, thank you for this video. It’s really encouraging for beginners/intermediates like myself. It shows that simple fills can be very effective and fit in well with the music. Talking of which, is that mellow funk backing track available to channel members? Thanks again.
Muito bom! 🤟 No quarto tempo do quarto compasso vc faz uma virada diferente, no começo tem que ficar contando os tempos e os compassos e depois fica automático essa contagem?
Yes, I’d say when beginning it’s a good idea to count the beats, then as you say it becomes automatic soon enough with repetition. Thanks for watching :)
I like the idea of the words containing the relevant syllables. So you could have motorbike blackcurrant on beat three, would that work? That's a good way to remember them. You just got a new subscriber :-)
Great stuff as always. Here's a problem I have. I'll try starting slow but for some reason my beat keeps getting faster and faster. As a beginner that's not helping me. Then I start getting nervous and tensing up which isn't a good thing. Why does my body automatically start speeding up?
Do you want me to only practise fills after 4(?)bars? or is OK to practice fills on EVERY 4th beat? IS that a bad habit to get into? Then possibly difficult to get out of?.. You want me playing the groove rock steady as priority and too many fills might throw me off the pulse?!

This is by far the best video I've seen on beginner drum fills! This is exactly what I've been needing! Thank you so much!
I hear the 4 and a in all sorts of songs. It sounds nice and is a cool turn around.
So easy and enjoyable to follow.
Im new with the drums. You can't teach better than this. You are amazing.
Grade 3 here and really needed a nice backing track I can use to jam along to using a variety of beats, thank you! Loved the fills.
So well explained, so helpful! Thank you from a total beginner!
Cheers! 🙏🏻👊🏻

I love it...something simple but sounds amazing , super fill and love the beat

I think I know what you mean (although I think it would be 2 semiquavers on + a) I am also a fan of the really short drum fill. It sounds cool.
Cool, yep can't be crotchets - could be semi-quavers or perhaps the last two of a set of eighth note triplets. Cheers!
Thanks Mike, really useful & great to play along too.
Wonderful. Wonderful to help me spice up my beginner drumming. Thanks
Love this! Thank you Mike 😊 🙏🏻

Super! Thank you
You sound such a nice person that it is almost annoying! :) thanks for sharing.❤
I like to do this method ever since your video months ago and still use tea, coffee and cucumber also
It's Awesome, what about playing a 24 or16 beat on a drum

nice Mike

Thank you Mike. I cant seem to find that particular backing track. Could you please give me the link. Cheers

Hi Mike. Can you put up that link to the jamming backing tracks please.

Hey Mike, where did you find the backing track you were using for this quick lesson pls?

What about playing drops on a drum during worship songs

what is the backing track song and where to find it? Thanks and great lesson!
Pretty sure this was just on UA-cam, can't find the exact one used here just now, but type in "drumless funk" and you'll get some good ones! Cheers.
It's called Jamin Smooth Funk
Hi Mike, which Smooth Funk one is this from the Jammin channel?
Where can I find the jamming on Spotify?

Cheers Jim! Much appreciated and thanks for watching - so glad if you found it useful. And yes, it automatically exchanges to dollars I believe 👊🏻
I like how much fun you are having (...and learning; I will go and hit things now. blackcurrant. motorbike.)
Invaluable video. Thanks man. Just started drums (see my latest vid). Cheers ears!
You just can't help from doing neat stuff on the hi hat while teaching us beginner's, can you? haha
