02:50 Fan enjoying the show. 05:12 Love this rhythm. The open hi-hats combined with the rest of the beat allow you to relax into the hit before going back to closed.
This is just fantastic, it will take a few weeks for me to practice all these patterns to bring them up to professional performance. Thank you for this.
Two weeks into drum “journey” and realised I shouldn’t be here yet. But managed to get the groove down by the end of my practice. I’ll be back when I’m ready for the rest of it. Thanks
I’m a beginner drummer but been a musician as a bassist for over 30 years this is beyond my abilities right now but it’s inspiring and something to strive for very cool it’s crazy how just changing the hi-hat can change the whole feel
You bet this gets your juices flowin'! Awesome lesson there Jeff. Thanks again! I'll see ya next week!....celebrating our 2 yrs of online 1 on 1. Thanks, for the drummer I am now!
long time guitarist/bassist with limited drumming experience here, but finally got myself and electronic kit for the home studio and am working on getting some grooves down. this video was absolute GOLD; so much to play with here. and 0 fluff. you got a new sub man 🙏
Really great video Jeff. One thing so magical about the HH I tell my students is to listen to the secondary rhythms of the melody and match up to the groove. Steve Gadd did a great thing of 16ths on the HH using a flat-flam paradiddle so as not to break the 😮16ths pattern. Look it up. Keep up the good work!
Holy shit this is like one years worth of material to chew on for me, as a novice, goddamn! Love the work you put in! I have been trying to learn some hip-hop and lofi type grooves, would be cool if we have gotten a tutorial this elaborate on those from you, man!
Man what a great video and teaching. Thank you for this. Super tight brother. You have passed on the inspired feeling of being excited to go practice dialing these in!
Man this video was like pure ecstasy for me. Even just listening to it. I’ve always fuck in loved hi hats, I’m self taught somewhat okay drummer but I barely know any theory or how to count time. This video encouraging me to finally really learn. So fucking smooth and tight rhythms
Hi Jeff ! just wanted to let u know that your lectures are amazing. Perfectly describer, great sound and many useful ideas. Keep rolling and stay strong! Greetings from Czech Republic 🔥
Awesome lesson video Jeff! Some great ideas here and I love the part where your kid sees you playing through the window. That's the real life cherry on top. Well done!
Similar to number 16 "One-handed broken 16th notes" I also love (and hate) practicing similar hi-hat pattern shifted by 1/8, so that three strokes end on a beat, rather than starting on it. It's amazing how different it feels, being so similar.
Great video and definitely will be trying some of these out. I would maybe add one more and that's triplets. John Dolmayan from System Of a Down does that sometimes (Toxicity or B.Y.O.B. come to mind) and it works surprisingly well and it creates a very uniquely sounding groove.

I like how there's no unnecessary talking explaining what's going on the groove. It's just the groove and it's notation. Simple and to the point
Looks like your drum tech wants in!
Your hi-hat discipline is insane 😳
Umm practice....
