Saved this vid in my ‘important drum lessons’ playlist. Thank you, Mike!
Such a great feel on that track. It feels like a Jeff Porcaro feel.
One of the most fantastic syncopations ever.
Great job
Great lesson Mike. You should hv played the groove for a bit again at the end of the video. Just a suggestion.
You are correct, but keep in mind the recoding was done with a LinnDrum, so there never was a real drummer playing this on the album.
And Michale Jackson's, "The Way You Make Me Feel" is quite similar to this, if not identical.
I can do that beat but my trouble is the little snare fill on the intro
Thank you for confirming I’ve been playing right all along. But I already knew that lol. Love Tears for Fears and fun song to play
Covering this in the 80's, I would have fun and get creative, mess with the groove. Fortunately, had a great bass player.
The bass drum/snare is the same as "Revolution" by The Beatles.
To my knowledge, Manny Elias played this deceptively tricky drum beat on the track. Lovely groove. The drum fills are a challenge too.
The original recording does not use real drums. It's programmed.
Sounds great. The actual recording is a sample or drum machine. You make it sound authentic. Well done you.
Hey Friends... well, these new videos sure have caused some people to get quite angry with me and I'm not really sure why... My entire career, I've played and taught this song the way I explain it. Recently I saw a Transcription on Drumeo, and I really trust their transcribers as they are great! The Transcription by Sahand Kahksar is just great!! Please don't think I'm taking anything away from your current knowledge, and even if the current live drummer plays with Quarter notes on the kick, that's great, but challenge yourself to the way I show it from the Transcription I trust. Thank you all for your continued support! Happy Drumming Everyone!
Down shots of new heads are so nice to look.... Nice breakdown
Thanks, Mike. Now, can you please come down to San Jose and play that for me at our next live gig? I hate not playing it live as it should be but that quarter note triplet is a killer.
Great video. I actually learned this beat not by listening to Tears for Fears but by listening to drummer Scott Rockenfield on The Whisper by Queensryche. His kick drum is not as busy throughout the entire song but he does throw in some variations.
I play 16 notes with a swing on the hihat with both wrists then left hand on snare 2+4
I'm also playing this way to make up for the shaker that is over dubbed in the recording
Very tricky beat! For a second, I felt like a beginner, but I got it fast. You learn something new all the time. You have to isolate stuff. Thanks for a great lesson.
Saw this video the other day so I attempted to learn it just now. Very good exercise to get the brain working! Thanks Mike!
Simply perfect groove🥁👍🔥
Actually, it was a Drum Machine that was used on the recording with overdubs performed by Manny Elias.
Good explanation. Never played this out live, but I did this one during Covid when I live-streamed my practice sessions on r/Redditsessions. The only difference I did was I played 8 note triplets on the hi hats and accented the offbeat like you play (I think there’s a shaker on the original track and I wanted to simulate that)
Thank you, now I know the right way...
Thank you for the confirmation !! ✌
Dark crisp hihat
It would be interesting to do a mash-up (medley) of that song, with "Minute by Minute" Doobies/Michael McDonald!
Excellent, thank you, subscribed
great vid man!
LOL...so start out with Ringo on Revolution...
Well done!
Might be wrong but didn’t Mark Brzezicki play this live at maybe Live Aid and played a double handed shuffle?
Not sure. Maybe? Haven’t been following this band since I was a kid.
Good one 👍
Don’t fear the tears!!
Awesome! If you've played Latin music before, this would be easier to get.
What about the overdubbed shaker or what ever it is that makes it sound complete
I agree, but if you are in a band playing this song live and no one is playing shaker, you better make this groove sound big!
Still enjoying your dvd pack from many years ago btw
Thanks Chris. It's good to know many drummers still appreciate my work and trust my knowledge. Cheers!! @@chrismillward9634
Up until now, my life has been a lie! Thank you! ❤
It still is. He’s wrong.
@@glengamble526 how so? Please let me know.
Hi, can you please suggest some fun songs for beginner 10 year old drummer to practice for performance.
Seven nation army, another one bites the dust, Billie Jean, Eye of the Tiger, uptown funk, salvation.
It's programmed drums.
Exactly, and thats the pattern... Live they use a real drummer...

If we all aspire to this skill level, it wont matter what the real drum part is! 😂 Happy listening
Oh. Is he doing it wrong….
I'm not hearing the ghost notes.
Ghost notes???? where are those?
@@MikeMichalkow I should have clarified, there's a lot of space for grace notes, if you want to give it the same feel with the shakers on the original recording. This guy gives a good demo. ua-cam.com/video/Sro6SSPcvq8/v-deo.htmlsi=ZLQK38m60rp-OuLS&t=620
It doesn't mean your way is wrong, but yes there's space for some ghost notes in there if you want to add a little.
@@barflyrocks cool. I’m just demonstrating what I see on most of the transcriptions out there.
@@MikeMichalkow I hear you!
@@MikeMichalkow you have a beautiful kit with a beautiful pack of cymbals and all this stuff and not know what ghost notes are? not being rude, im just actually shocked!
FINALLY🎉🎉🎉 thank you Mike
