    You know what? The best part about this video is you using the light and mirror to show the clip and giving more information on how to do it. That part is so far back in the engine bay that I was pretty much guessing what to do to get it disconnected. In fact the first two times I tried I couldn’t get it off at all.

    Just some advice folks, don't just load up the parts cannon on this type of issue. You have to do diag, and perform the wiring harness test I go over in the video. The GM Ecotec 1.4L has a *normal* ticking sound simply due to its fuel injector design. What you're looking for is an _additional_ abnormal sound, in this videos case, specifically from a failing purge solenoid assembly. If you do not get the results shown in the video, your sound source is elsewhere.
    These solenoids are not whisper quiet to begin with, but they are also not supposed to be audible from a distance while the engine is idling either. That's what this repair vid is about addressing.

      I did the test like you and the noise stopped so I put a new part in and it makes the same noise. It is loud and like I said stopped when I disconnected the power. So why would it still make this noise?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  Рік тому +1

      Tough to say, as you can read thru the comments for the vast majority of us this is what to do to repair this noise issue. If you can hear the noise inside the car with the doors closed and the windows up, only then is this a problem. It's _normal_ for this GM engine to make a ticking noise you can hear with the hood up. What you're listening for is not no noise, but _less_ noise. I can suggest two considerations if you still have the _hear it inside the car_ problem:
      Did you use a genuine GM ACDelco part? Aftermarket ones are typically of inferior quality and construction.
      Is there a check engine light, or a stored history diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the computers memory? The noise may be related to another component in the same EVAP system.

      No. That is the effect of over pressurization. That is not the cause. You have a bad timing chain tensioner. The timeing is off just so slightly that it causes back pressure. It will just break again until you tear apart the front of the engine and replace the time chain tensioner. 1:37

    If I remove the dipstick or the oil cap while the engine is on, it shakes too much and pulls in a lot of air. I complained to the seller and he said it was normal. He said that's how that type of engine is.😢

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  Місяць тому

      It is _normal_ for this particular GM engine in turbocharged form to have _some_ vacuum (i.e., suction) from either the dipstick, or oil cap, even at idle. It may even make a noticeable noise of the air rushing in when doing opening either. However, you shouldn't be checking the oil level, or adding oil, on this type of engine while it is running though. It cannot be done reliably on this model, and its very likely to end up with oil splash all over. This is because the turbocharger is involved with crankcase ventilation on this model engine.
      Opening up either can also cause a change in idle rpm, and may even generate a DTC, again perfectly normal for this particular GM engine because opening either of those introduces a vacuum leak. _Excessive vacuum_ however can indicate a problem with either the integral vent on the camshaft cover, or bypass valve in the intake manifold. But you want to assess the health of this particular model engine _without_ opening either the dipstick or cap. Other engines will be different in behavior, this video is about a particular one with its own unique quirks.

    Hi. This might be unrelated but really want to figure this out if possible. I have a 2012 Chevy sonic that when it rains, the ac stops cooling and the temperature in the radio shows as -40 degrees. As long as it is not raining it works really well. I assume that the undercarriage getting wet had something to do with the failure but might be wrong. TIA

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 місяці тому

      The temperature displayed on the radio is the outside ambient air temperature. It is provided by a sensor mounted in the front bumper fascia. On the RH (pass) side I believe for the Sonic. You might check the condition of the wiring harness and sensor itself for damage allowing for water intrusion when it rains.

      This particular GM engine has a _normal_ ticking to it. When the purge solenoid ages it adds to the melody. The unplug/plug test I showed in the video is how you determine if you have an _abnormal_ ticking noise issue relating to the purge solenoid.
      The solenoid obviously makes _some_ sound when it's functioning, but as it ages the sound becomes much louder, pending a failure. If during the unplug test you are still hearing what you're commenting on, it's not related to the purge solenoid. It could be _normal_ or something else, like an exhaust manifold leak (that also makes a _ticca ticca ticca_ sound. Or an internal engine component from low oil, wear etc. Many things.

    • @silkcrow6750
      @silkcrow6750 2 роки тому

      Check the hose that connects from the canister valve to the intake manifold. Also called the purge line. Sometimes there will be a ball check piece inside the hose itself that could be making the noise. If so, replace the hose, you should be able to feel it as well.

    • @FireDredFTW

      Here is how I stopped mine from ticking: I originally bought an off-brand purge valve and I put it on. It caused ticking still and the check engine light even went on. I researched around and I was reading an Amazon review on the AC Delco brand part. Someone had the same issue. All they said was they returned the off-brand part and bought the AC Delco Brand Part and it stopped the ticking. I installed the AC Delco Part just yesterday and my ticking noise is gone for now.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 роки тому

      Usually what happens here is, if you ignore the noise and do not replace it proactively, the solenoid eventually fails enough where you get a check engine lamp on the dash lit with a code you can pull with a scan tool. This part completely failing can cause the start symptoms you describe, but you may have multiple failures going on. I'd start with pulling the codes with a scan tool (not all of them will trigger the check engine lamp), and work that list first.

    • @DrShock

      Thanks. No, this noise problem causes no damage if ignored. Eventually the solenoid will fail to operate properly and cause a check engine light in the instrument cluster to come on. The solenoid is part of the emissions system, to reduce pollution of the air we all breath. Once the check engine light is on, it is a repair that you will have to do at that point to pass state inspection, if your state checks the vehicle for emissions compliance.

      Just ran out of time with the cars owner needing it back, as mentioned at 4:55. It's a pretty cut and dry diagnosis here as shown with the harness disconnect/reconnect test.
      Just remember that there's always ticking with an Ecotec 1.4L. And there is some sound that _normally_ comes from an operating purge solenoid. Post a time index from the vid to be sure, but I _think_ what you are referring to is just a safety lock on the electrical harness connector. It's a small piece of plastic that helps make sure that the electrical connector does not accidentally get depressed and come loose. If so, its not a big deal. You could procure one at some point from a wreck at a you pull your own parts type salvage yard. Like an LKQ PYP site.
      If instead you mean the retainer for the vacuum line that connects into the solenoid, well if that broke you may have to replace that whole plastic line or the line won't stay connected.

    I'm working on a 2002 Buick LeSabre 3.8L and the problem I'm having is with the purge solenoid. My long term fuel trim is pegged out at -25% and my short term is around -5%. The solenoid is ticking meaning it's being energized. When I disconnect it the long term fuel trim goes back to 0. With the connector unplugged I connected a test light to battery power and the other end to the negative terminal. My test light pulsates continuously. The ground is controlled by the ECU. Does that mean the ECU has a bad driver or can a faulty fuel pressure sensor cause the computer to continuously run the Evap integrity test? I haven't checked the fuel pressure sensor voltage yet but I will once I jack up the car. Please Help!

      So with the EVAP solenoid assembly removed a 3:31, the connector at the intake manifold that the assembly snaps onto is in the right hand view. That connection is part of the plastic engine intake manifold. Everything removed is all one unit, if using genuine GM parts. If yours has something missing or different about that assembly itself, it could be an aftermarket design or damaged in some way.

Definitely not a parts cannon fired into the dark candidate, can get expensive real fast just throwing parts at it. Start with the diagnostic codes being recorded for the misfire, and run thru the troubleshooting associated with each code stored in the engine computer.

      The overall sound would yes. But different engines can have different sounds for both normal and abnormal, especially across manufacturers. So I wouldn't compare a GM engine to a Nissan engine alone, for this sort of problem.
      The GM Ecotec 1.4L, for example, has a perfectly normal ticking to it. That's kinda unusual to begin with engine sounds wise. It's only when you have this added noise with the purge solenoid failing that we cover in this vid, that you get an additional clue about something truly amiss. Most folks would never notice it, until the check engine light came on further down the calendar.

      Like with some of the earlier comments, those new to the Sonic and GM's Ecotec 1.4L turbo may not be used to the ticking sound it makes _normally_ by design. You have to go thru the diagnosis I do in the video to see if what you have is an _additional_ ticking noise caused by this solenoid on its way out.
      A failing solenoid would not be covered by warranty usually anyway, as this is a wear item like a brake pad. They are relatively inexpensive, and easy to replace yourself if proven to have been the source. Only use genuine GM/ACDelco though (part info in the description), the aftermarket import parts will fail very quickly.

      The before/after test I show is to help determine if _this_ is what you're hearing. The part is not silent, even when operating correctly. But you shouldn't be able to hear the genuine GM/ACdelco solenoid with the hood closed when operating normally.
      There's a basket of other things that can cause a ticking (besides the fact this particular GM engine has a _normal_ ticking to it to begin with). Exhaust manifold leaks or lifters are other possible _tickers_ that can be heard over the engine noise.
