Well done Alan, Like you said it sounds like the engine is shot. I wonder how many owners have been told that they need a new engine by unscrupulous garages. Only for them to fit or bodge the swirl flaps. Keep up the good work, I now know that if I hear someone mention that their ecoflex engine is shot, I can tell them about the swirl flaps and the quick way to tell if it is them at fault by removing the vacuum pipe.

You are a very thorough mechanic. Pity every car owner cannot use your services. My 2L Duratec is still quiet at 79,000 miles anyway. But I will listen.
Swirl flaps are normally for duel length manifolds. Long inlet runners are good for torque, but not so much for rpm. So the ecu adjusts the flaps to create long and short lengths to suit rpm, load.
Yeah that's correct. The dual length runners in the inlet manifold enhance torque. Incidentally Mitsubishi had this in their 3.5l V6 petrol and the butterfly valves were brass with brass screws. Over time they come loose and you end up with brass screws going into the cylinders. Brass is incompressible..... For ensuring no wallet shocks, we removed the valves.... Other problem with the Vauxhall as shown in the video is that it'll draw in false air through the worn shafts/holes and make the car run lean, maybe even sending some horrible O2 codes and getting on a wild goose chase. If it was my car I'd disconnect the mechanical link, seal up the manifold holes and be done.
Wow just sat wondering how many people have actually scrapped a perfectly good engine because of this tappin bet theres a fair few.. thanks for some great information

Hi Alan, I can not see what you have done exactly but when holding the screw, it appeared you were wanting to blank it off on the wrong side. Do blank it off on the engine vacuum suction side however. Otherwise you have now created a vacuum leak , which will arise when the solenoid is allowed by the ECU to let the vacuum pass through 😁Mixture problems will arise. Hope you did it all right. The safest way would be: Reattach the vacuum hose to the solenoid. Detach the hose from the vacuum actuator. Then blank off the vacuum hose. Leave the vacuum actuator unharmed, since apparently the flaps are in the correct position when the actuator is non vacuumized. Regards from NL
Hi Alan & Marinus, my daughters 1.0 petrol corsa is having this issue. I want to do as you guys are saying, but before I do, can you tell me please: Did this ever cause a side effect or knock-on problem? (Pardon the pun with the term "knock-on"! 😂) And - am I correct in my understanding that you only disconnected the power fron the little vacuum actuator and remove the hose but leave it open ? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding. Thanks so much for the videos and the help - it's brilliant 👌👍 Denis
@@denisbiggane6981 denis, there is a solenoid and a vacuum actuator. The solenoid is the thing with the electrical wire connected to it. Leave the electrical wire on the solenoid and do not detach it. The vacuum actuator does not have an electrical wire. It only has a vacuum hose coming from the solenoid. In order to put the vacuum actuator out of service, you should detach the vacuum hose from the actuator. But you should blank it off as described above. I do not know any side effects when doing this, you should ask Alan about that. Hope this helps.
I had a mk3 2.0 mondeo and I changed the flaps in that manifold and it was a bit of a pain in the arse tbh. My mk4 I bought the complete manifold as it worked out cheaper than buying the flaps and gaskets seperate. I think the replacement flaps are plastic I'm not sure.

the noise from the twinport is also when the engine is cold and when it is warm? I have a 1.4 xep, and it is noisy, whining, only when cold, the distribution and the gauges are changed
Yes this is a real problem with this petrol engine and other makes and models with swirl flaps thst have been constructed poorly. Worst of all with this engine it sounds just like a chain rattle.
Daughter Had same car. Timing chain snapped. I rebuilt engine with new head then Sold it. Timing chain snapped again 6 months later. When I checked service history it had already had a timing chain fail before she bought it. So 3 chain fails under 70k miles. Absolutely ridiculous quality. . It also had this rattle. I disconnected flaps to keep it quiet.
I have a friend with that exact noise on a 1.4 that looks like that engine with an extra cylinder. Although, if we pull that hose off the noise is the same. He has driven with this for a long long time and I’m thinking if the flaps could have come loose or something and flapping around in there without the control holding it back. How are your thoughts on that?
Holy S... I've never heard what bad swirl flaps sound and I've actually wondered few times that how the heck do you even know if they're going bad as it's a thing obviously in so many cars. I never ever thought it would sound like engine that's going to die within 1000km's 😁
How you disconnected the hose btw.. i tried to diconnect but its so tight and sad to say i broke the connection.can you please tell me the name of that part??

@@alan4xHi my Corsa is having this same issue so thank you very much for the video. How much do you think it would cost to replace the inlet manifold?
That's a good thing to know, my 1.3 Diesel Corsa Ecoflex is making an odd sound but not that, mine sounds like a squeaking type noise when running or idle, sounds a bit like a fan belt would that needs tightening or something , a garage suggested it could be the turbo !
@@shanu_yt2531 yes, mine was making a funny noise which turned out to be the injector seals and the excess smoke / bad starting from cold was glow plugs and it wasn't cheap to fix :(
Yes your car will run fine. Because the flaps in the inlet manifold are no longer working you may see a slight power loss and extra fuel consumption so it is best to replace the inlet manifold. Good luck
You know its not the flap making the noise right??? its more to do with the fuel/mixture etc due to the flaps being in the wrong position to where the ECU expects it to be. Hence the knocking like detonation sound or big end bearing sound..
Hi im stuck!! My vauxhall corsa 1.2 sxi sounds like an old diesel engine from the 80s do you know when a old taxi would pull up to collect you and you knew straight away cos of the noise, us it common my garage tells me nothing wrong but then today its juddering lising piwer then next minute its ok , dont think they both are attached but what could the latter be pls?
Alan great video my sons 1.4 2016 is making exactly the same noise the engine set up is different obviously but would it also be possible it’s the same issue and not the tappets shot any help would be appreciated.
Hi. Not sure about the setup of your engine on the inlet manifold side of things but if your manifold has swirl flaps inside it then there will be some kind of valve at the end of the manifold to operate them.
Its probably for emissions reasons, leave it disabled and it may fail the MOT emissions test, either now or some point further down the road. If it were my car I would probably pay the extra for a new inlet manifold, as long as it wasn't crazy money. What am I talking about of course is crazy money, probably 500 quid for the manifold and 200 quid for fitting. :-)
Brilliant video I thought my engine was knackered saw this. Tried it tapping stopped. AMAZING THANK YOU. can I ask does it matter which end of pipe you blank with screw.. Thanks again 👍👍
Hi Alan, my corsa sounds exactly like that and the garage have told me that the engine is on its way out - the only difference is that mine occasionally misfires and then sorts itself out again. Could the manifold cause it to misfire randomly? Thanks
it controls a set of flaps inside the inlet manifold which control emissions and generate better torque at lower engine speeds, not that you would notice if they were removed lol
Omg cant believe how much noise they make when they go faulty and can totally see why someone would be able to mis diagnose it for being a engine bearing rattle lol.Great find btw top work as always
I have just watched the video and with exactly the same problem eliminated this noise in minutes! Garage quoted min of £300 to investigate and likely would have tried to replace the whole inlet manifold on a car worth £1200...... I decided to just pull off the ball fixing on the actuator arm where it meets the swirl flaps when the engine is running. Not sure why you can't just do this and not touch the hoses? Thereby the no vacuum leaks and the engine thinks all is good>?
How do you do that Nick? Pulling the ball fixing off. Does it just detatch easily? I want to do it but I'm always breaking shit. I dont want to snap it by forcing it off too much. It looks like flimsy plastic to me.
I have them on my s60 d5 mate but a stupid little arm that wears out an it's for ever popping out, mines been jammed in one position and I've never had any issues with it being jammed
I have a different sound, which I now have found out is a lifter arm, so off comes the camshaft for the inlet side, so I can change that single lifter which is clicking on mine. Gonna do a complete chain shift as well, since I dont know when it's been replaced, and I need to do the oil pump at the same time anyway... Sooo yaaaiii... :D
I had the same sound on my corsa. When disconnected vacuum pipe, sound disappeared, but I’m noticed rough idling, more like unstable rpm engine shaking . If I increase rpm till 1000rpm engine sounds great shaking disappears. When engine cold does not shake, just when warm up. How I can increase rpm? Or maybe I can do something else to sort out issue? When engine warm up rpm 750-800. I blanked vacuum pipe.
Hi Alan, Great video and thoroughly explained.I had the exact same issue with the rattle about 7-8 months ago with my Corsa D 2010 1.0 Ecotec and diagnosed it as the timing chain. The mechanic who fitted the new chain said that It was slack and needed replaced. However, the rattle is back and I was thinking the worst but after watching your video and taking a look at the manifold, I pulled the lever that controls the swirl flaps and the sound of the rattle disappeared. I don’t know how to go about this because it’s an expensive repair to replace the inlet manifold, could the car still be roadworthy or am I taking a risk by continuing to drive it ?? Cheers Sean
I recently had the same problem with mine, garage were great and recommended going down the second hand route for the part! Don’t carry on driving the car as if the loose part goes into the engine, the whole engine will be a write off!! We very luckily got a part second hand for £50 on Facebook!
@Hannah Szubert Hi Hannah, That's great you managed to get it sorted and fixed. My problem is that the mechanics I've spoken to about the rattle and the lever at the back of the engine, next to the manifold, they don't want to really listen and put it down to a timing chain etc but managed to find a Vauxhall Specialist garage close to home. I'm hoping they identify the rattle and that it is coming from the manifold and get it sorted sooner rather than later. I've been driving the car as normal but I do know the risk of the swirl flap finally giving way and falling into one of the cylinders of the engine but I have no choice as I'm going round in circles with garages trying to find what I know to be the problem.
Ahhhh sorry to hear that, I know it’s a pain. Try going to a Vaux Centre, we did also buy a manifold off them for 420 but it was brand new and they quoted 75 to put it in, it also came with 12 months warranty. Really good customer service. I’m not sure where your based, however there are a few Vauxcentres around, I would definitely recommend that route. the one in Romford was brilliant, really lovely people. Hope that helps! 🙈
@Hannah Szubert Yeah got the car booked into a VX specialist for Wednesday morning to see if they can diagnose the manifold but I'm hoping they can before I need to take it across the country to get it sorted haha. That was a really good price. Did you get a new manifold or just the swirl flaps ??
Whole new thing!! Brand new, I was shocked at how good the price was 🙈 we had it diagnosed at my local garage where I had it serviced (Langley Vale garage) and then they recommended going second hand as Wilson’s Vauxhall had quoted 600 for a whole new manifold (without labour!!) and after labour costs and vat my garage said getting a new part wouldn’t be worth it on my old little Corsa! It’s good to know as vauxcenter Romford will also post 48 hour’s delivery so if you get quoted a silly price for a manifold at your Vauxhall you can buy it for them to put in and just pay them for the labour 🤷🏼♀️! Worth a thought, that’s what we had to do in the end as unfortunately the second hand part wasn’t the right fit!
Hi i have the same problem in my 1.2 Corsa D. Will need to connect the hose again before MOT so it passes emissions. Also how does with affect the fuel economy of the car. Thanks.
Hi Alan only you can help !! I have knock from the fuel cooler on my mk4 mondeo - it’s loud under the floor but not from the engine - the cooler has been replaced and so far two garages have never heard it before and can’t find a fault - the car drives great .It’s a 1.6 econetic.- any advice would be great thanks

Hi Alan am have 1.6 petrol zafira eco flex am get same sound exactly 😮do no what’s wrong 😢 thanks
Brilliant can I do thiyon a 1.4petrol ?
Think they eventually start to brake up and bits of the plastic gets sucked into the engine
Had the exact same noise, turned out it was the water pump, replaced it and noise went.
I have them on my s60 d5 mate but a stupid little arm that wears out an it's for ever popping out, mines been jammed in one position and I've never had any issues with it being jammed
😁
That sounds rough AF
You should have had the secatary too explain ,,would have been so funny 😆 🤣
🤣
Hi Alan,
Great video and thoroughly explained.I had the exact same issue with the rattle about 7-8 months ago with my Corsa D 2010 1.0 Ecotec and diagnosed it as the timing chain.
Cheers
Sean
I recently had the same problem with mine, garage were great and recommended going down the second hand route for the part! Don’t carry on driving the car as if the loose part goes into the engine, the whole engine will be a write off!! We very luckily got a part second hand for £50 on Facebook!
@Hannah Szubert Hi Hannah,
That's great you managed to get it sorted and fixed.
When you repaced the manifold did it fix it?
Hi.
Can this cased a misfire in one of cylinder? If one of cylinder room closef?
Hi i have the same problem in my 1.2 Corsa D. Will need to connect the hose again before MOT so it passes emissions. Also how does with affect the fuel economy of the car. Thanks.
Hi there, did manage to take the hose off your corsa, l can’t seem to find the house on mine
Please advise
Alan great job awesome and very smart investigation u ve done . Wow you thought me something new Sir thank you
Keep it up 👍
Hi Alan only you can help !! I have knock from the fuel cooler on my mk4 mondeo - it’s loud under the floor but not from the engine - the cooler has been replaced and so far two garages have never heard it before and can’t find a fault - the car drives great .It’s a 1.6 econetic.- any advice would be great thanks
So in doing this are the Inlet flaps then in the Open or closed position? Tia
Alan.how did you first discover the swirl flaps rattling, was it using a stethoscope?
if you put your hand on the inlet manifold you can feel the tapping
Hi I have a question about a fault code on a Ford mondeo 2.0tdci 2011. I have 2 fault codes on the HCM, B1A57;87 and B1A58;87. I have tried resetting the unit with forscan, I find no corrosion. What more could be the problem, any ideas?? I tried to Google it but I find no resolve
