I paid $20 for an aftermarket valve from Amazon and it took me less than 5 minutes to change for my Chevy Equinox. I have noticed a huge difference in my cars Idling, power and gas mileage.
I just replaced my purge valve on my 2003 Buick PA... It tested good in regards to holding a vacuum, it was an aftermarket part. I was throwing an evap leak code, so I replaced with an ACDelco OEM valve, code gone. Spend the extra money and get the OEM part.
It also depends on the age of the vehicle also I have a 95 Plymouth Grand Voyager 3.3 6 cylinder right now my evap canister is disconnected I have no issues with fuel economy fuel vapors or fuel tank issues nothing in fact my vehicle runs even better and gotten better on gas mileage
I had 1994 that I removed all the evap parts. Put a regular vent on the hose from the tank, and plugged all the vacuum lines. OBD 1 so it didn't check see if it was working. I think 1996 & up OBD II the ECU checks to see if it is working.
I have a code on my 2011 Grand Caravan that says "GASCAP" on the dash display. So I tightened the gas cap and it remained, replace the gas cap and it remained. Changed the ESIM Module and it remains. After seeing this, I'm going to change out my Purge valve and see if this resolves my error code because my car also randomly stalls out, has a loss of power and gas mileage as well as higher than normal engine temps and a bit of a rough idle. I have not noticed any black smoke from the exhaust but will take a look and see if it does have it as well. This explained the symptoms, error code as well as the P Codes I get from my FixD sensor. Time to order me a new Purge valve...
Update. Change the gas cap, ESIM, Purge valve and MAP sensor, have driven about 500KM's since they've been changed and even after resetting the codes, the "GASCAP" error is still displayed on the dash. So I guess the only things left are the canister or a hole somewhere in the lines or gas tank but I have no smell of gas vapor that I can detect. I don't have a smoke machine so I guess now I'm going to have to take to a mechanic and have them look into it further.
You do not have to go to a mechanic for a purge valve specially on a Mustang. You can get a purge drive for 80 bucks at any auto parts store are for the OEM. It will cost you about 122 to 140 depending on who you get it from It’s something a person can do by themselves. It’s literally plug and play. Do not go to mechanic you can do it yourself. It’s a literally easy you will save yourself like 300 bucks or more if you just buy the part and do the labor yourself now when it comes to the purge valve, you gotta understand there’s several different codes for that purge valve, so UA-cam is kind of confusing when it comes down to it because it matters if it’s open still close if you gotta leak all that has a different type of remember that it took me forever to find somebody knowing that that was the issue and that was the part to replace going to dealership they’re gonna want you to buy the entire system which is like $400
So on my van I never have problems with the smell of gas, but if the day goes up to about 92 degrees and when I run the back AC which puts a further drag on the engine, after about an hour it smells horrendous of vaporized fuel. My theory is that when the ambient temp in the engine rizes high enough the purge valve stays open allowing for the gas to leak out. THis condition is not often so I was wondering if I could override the value command from the ECU and make an external switch that will force it closed for a little while until I can get on a freeway to allow the engine to cool rather than the city stop and go. All parts have been replaced but still and issue. Any ideas around that duck tape idea?
No not really.. First, you show a carbureted engine and purge system. Not to many of those from the factory anymore. ALL the symptoms you mention MAY occur on a carb vehicle with an evap system but not on a fuel injected engine even though you try to relate it to a computer (EEC) controlled engine. The sole purpose of the "evaporative emissions system' is to prevent EVAPORATING fuel vapors from leaving the vehicle and entering the atmosphere. Hence the name. The vapors from the fuel tank are captured in the charcoal canister and then "purged" back into the engine to be burned at certain times during in the combustion process. Fuel tank venting is usually run through the charcoal canister so you might get a gas smell in your garage if the purge valve is inop and likely the computer would give a fault code. If the canister is damaged or plugged you may get fuel delivery problems from not allowing venting into the tank, but that's not the purge valve's issue. Fuel economy might suffer if a vacuum line in the evap system leaks allowing extra air in as would any uncontrolled vacuum leak. Again. not the purge valve. Even if the system does not use a canister to hold vapors, you make this sound way worse than it is, and you repeat yourself to make it sound that way.
Can a bad charcoal cannister can also cause clogging for line to purge valve? I am having hard starts and stalling and mechanic said my purge value is working as it should but clogging of lines because of bad cannister most likely culprit. Would you agree?
Your mechanic should've been able to answer that question with a simple test - pull the bottom (closest to the ground) hose off the charcoal canister. If gas leaks out, your canister is full and needs replacement.
"Purge valve" is used constantly in this video, but I think it is often referring to the canister vent solenoid and stated differently. There is a purge solenoid located near the engine top and near the throttle body, so I am a little confused as to what this person is always referring to. Most Vent Solenoids are located near the charcoal or vapor canister and yes, it does perform a purge function, however, most refer to it as a vent.
Hello there! So I waned to buy used 2015 Dodge charger from someone and when I asked if the car has any mechanical issues, the owner replied yes: the Valves have to be calibrated. What should I do now? Should I buy and fix or I shouldn’t? please help
Vapor Canister Purge Valve need help on locating hrv 2020 this one i get emissions and ebrake on my cluster only did replace baterry and fuel cap still showing it
My 2.4 engine is idling rough. The code says emission system small vacuum leak. When I completely cover the vacuum line going to the evap system, the rough idle does not go away. There is no change. Any ideas?
In my golf GTI 92 the valve not stay open or close, She ticking quickly, and work principaly at idle, its normal? I have disconnect the connector because the engine working a bit bad🤔
A purge valve is needed to clear too much gas vapour in a maybe a half tank of gas in hot summer. The EGR valve work to eliminate the Knox in the exhaust system by cooling the exhaust gases. The EGR will often when you drive on highway, because it doesn't disturb the engine running and this highway speed produce more Knox, that is a gas causing damage to atmosphere.
Yes it definitely can be. Had that same problem with my 04 Ranger for over a year, changed the purge valve about 2 months ago and haven't had that problem since.
@@brandoncharge1516 did you have a code ? ...i suspect mine is bad , but will test when my wife gets home . gas pistol shuts of ....it dosent accelerate as normal . volvo s80 t6
Every single thing said on this video is absolutely incorrect. Please do not mislead people on what the purge valve does before making videos like this. Just my humble opinion.
I have an issue with the car seeming to want to stall and but usually it keeps going. It actually did go out once with the lights coming on a couple of weeks ago. Three mechanics can't figure out what is wrong. No codes come up. We did have the canister and canister close valve replaced because we couldn't pump gas properly. So now we have this new issue and I'm not sure if it is connected to the same parts. Is the purge valve the same and canister close valve? This has been so stressful because I don't know what is going on. It seemed random but I am pretty sure now that it happens after I pump gas. Not right away but the next time I use the car. Any thoughts?
I’m confused on one thing, how can the purge valve expel all the fuel and air from the engine after being shut off, if the purge valve is AT the air INTAKE. Once the engine is off, there is nothing coming out from the exhaust because the intake and exhaust valves are alternatively closed, and the pistons are stopped in different position. So if the valve is defective and stock open, you’ll just have a hard time starting the car again, that’s all
How dare you the estimate of labor price!!!! On your video, for people that doesn’t work on cars will thing is easy but most of the time isn’t easy to find out what’s going on with the evap codes
I got my purge valve replaced today because the engine light came up, but I have noticed that my car is not going more than 3000 Rev, does anybody knows the cause of this? I have a 2022 ford mustang
It’s probably just a faulty part I had to replace mine again after I replaced it the first time because it was faulty. Every time I would get gas it would run roughly when idling like it wanted to cut off. Also if you are getting gas don’t put any extra fuel in the tank once the pump stops. That is also bad for the fuel system.
question please answer. can a purge valve or evap issue cause back fire? my car started some tail pipe backfire after i had exhaust work done,, could that have loosened a hose or connecton with evap system. crazy question i know... but i need to figure this out. thx in advance also.
"A faulty purge valve can cause serious damage to your engine," said no engineer or mechanic ever. Come to think of it, almost no engineer would agree with much of anything in this video
very confusing video. I really don't think you have a clue what you are talking about. (Clears out any leftover fuel from the engine?) a purge valve draws fuel vapors from the charcoal canister. Over heating? I'd like to see that. So stuck shut... won't push fuel vapors back into the engine instead they will run straight out of the exhaust blah blah..... get real, vacuum won't pull (air pressure pushing) fuel vapors from the tank, there's no vapors or fuel getting out the exhaust. I also doubt any shop would only charge $53 to change the purge valve, they would do diagnostics first even if you told them what you thought was wrong. "Oh my car is heating, steam everywhere, put on a purge valve", then you're mad because nothing was wrong with the valve, the thermostat was stuck.
