- Ed Sullivan's 'Toast Of The Town'.
Episode aired: Oct. 3, 1954 on CBS
Ed Sullivan turned his entire show into a salute of 'I Love Lucy' and its' stars: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
This is the little seen 'roast' dinner segment ending with Lucy & Desi speaking words of thanks to their audience and the country. - Розваги
The thing that always gets me is that after his speech, she looks at him to make sure he's OK, obviously concerned, and she starts crying just from seeing him crying. They obviously deeply loved each other, despite their marital problems.
Very true and Ed Sullivan hugging him as well.
Its mind-boggling that all the interviews Lucy did in the decades that followed, Merve Griffin, Mike Douglas, Johnny Carson, Dinah Shore and so many others that no one ever asked about this appearance. Its obvious that Lucy adored Desi and would go to greath lengths to protect him. Very moving.
Iconic American story. You can't but cry when Desi talks about coming to this country and cleaning bird cages. The American dream has to be earned. Thank-you for your genius and talent.
My dad is Cuban. And like Desi My grandparents and their 3 kids came here with nothing and eventually all made it. This country may not be perfect but Like Desi said its the best place to make something of yourself.
The American has to be earned??
@@kw7807 oops typo.
That woman really loved her husband.
The way Lucy looks at Desi ❤️
So much RESPECT for Desi Arnaz. May he and Lucy RIP. ❤️💕
I've loved Lucy and Desi since I was six years old. I am now 73 and still laughing at the reruns. They had the best show EVER on TV. 💖💖💖
2:35 "That's my boy!" - Desi Arnaz on William Frawley
I'm age 66. Was watching & laughing at I LOVE LUCY since age 4, 1962, Far Rockaway Queens NY.
It ws a beautiful unforgetable moment around 16.55 mins into the show . WE INDEED LOVED YOU LUCY, DESI N ED TOO !!!!
They brought so much happiness to the world, and still do, but couldn’t make each other happy. It’s heartbreaking 💔
I don’t think that’s true, they could make each other happy but lots of things were going on…. They never stopped loving each other though…. They were never the same after their divorce.
I love them both. In short, this is how I see it:
Lucy and Desi loved each other so very much, (even after their divorce, while marrying other people, it wasn't the same for either of them.)
Lucy gave Desi the first chance, by insisting he would be her costar. Desi took it with both hands and worked it out in the best way ever.
He built their empire, Lucy only wanted to act. It's true, Desi did everything. His ideas, his innovations, his foresight, HE invented the reruns. He took the 3 camera method and improved it, he and a 100 people built the studio with a place for 300 people to sit as audience, they did this thing that will apply the rules of the health and fire department, HE went through each and every resident in the neighborhood, getting their OK's approval for having an audience.
Lucy gave him the best of credit, even here on this particular video, and later on, she always gave him the credit he deserved while others didn't.
Desi felt overshadowed by her all of the time since She was the only one who was getting the attention, I also read he was cynical in a few interviews, regarding her Emmy's (but I won't say what he said,) though in later years he always gave her credit, saying that SHE was the talent, 90% of the show was Lucy, the rest of the 10% he divided between the rest of everyone else. They always said good things about each other.
Here comes my mixed feelings, you see how he looks at her, you see how she looks and talks with and about him. I can't help but feel so confused as to Why... Why would he cheat.. why would he treat her like that, I can't help but wish he would just recall all these wonderful moments of them before he'd do anything as cheating and drinking.
Desi loved Lucy till the day he died, Lucy loved Desi till the day she died. After Lucy had died Lucy's second husband said that she's happy now because she's with Desi.
Some people just don’t realize what they have or is always chasing something to fill a void, either way why does anyone cheat?
Agreed. People and relationships are complicated. I don’t think either two were easy people to live with. Desi had more issues than Lucy though. On top of that, they worked A LOT (desilu) and together… had two small kids… they were never the same after their divorce.
I cried
Desi's speech gets me every time.
This is just great...I've been waiting for years to watch the whole show! Thks for posting!
Thanks for posting. It's great to see the whole show.
That was wonderful! Thank you! 💛
I love Lucy
Wonderful. Thank you! Desi is adorable and so handsome.
Desi was choked up and so was i
Absolutely love the Mercury ad at the beginning, an unexpected surprise ☺️
Wow to think if you work hard in America, one could get ahead - what concept...🇺🇸
For some, yes..
Sarcasm warning ⚠️
Yep just look at all those prejudice old White people giving a Cuban American an achievement award
And His immense Love 🥰 for America 🇺🇸 .
I'm sure he had problems along the way but life is not perfect or Easy
This was so heartwarming listening to Him.
They should play this all over the airwaves
Desi was white caucasian
~Priceless....loved every sec
Excelente
Love those two. Desi great
I LOVE LUCY
I love watching classic tv clips..men wearing suits and ties... ladies wearing dresses. And people like Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance, who hated each other guts..but can act professional towards each other
Those 2 were a match, for sure! TRAGIC that issues (in Desi's life) ultimately caused their marriage to fail.
exactly my thoughts. They really did love and care deeply about one another. But his views vs. hers ultimately put too much strain into their lives. Makes me sad to think about it.
@@mandapanda11209 Desi's drinking & womanizing ultimately were to much for Lucy to bear! It's baffling to me how she held-on as long as she did!
@@websurfin9575 love will make you do crazy things, most often at your expense. The human being is full of incongruities.
@@websurfin9575they wound up becoming friends again later on. She was very protective of him in later years
I don’t think I’ve heard of mercury cars. It’s pretty cool how they advertised it with the type of technology they had.
The guy roasting them said “Desi called his first band a ‘sextet’ even though it only had four members, because he liked the way the name sounded.” Yep, that sounds right.
What 20 year old in a foreign country making his first money without knowing the language but surrounded by plenty of music and girls in the tropical playground that was Miami Beach wouldn’t like it? As he said in his book, “we sang and danced, and screwed and screwed.” Sounds all right to me.
Don't take that out of context. He named is memoir "A Book".
Does anybody know where I can find her 1968 appearance on this show for free?
15:18 😂
15:40
He skipped right over Vivian...
He doesn't skip over her...if you listen at 3:15 in this video, Ed Sullivan introduces her as "The Indian squaw from Albuquerque, Vivian Vance."
@@StevenBarryVideos he totally introduces her and I missed it. Thanks for pointing that out!
That’s not the American dream dusty Rhodes
Desi was not at peace with Lucille Balls authoritative and dominant work ethics.
Boring
Yes, you are
Uncle Toby....your boring name fits you. Get lost
@@julietteyork6293I love your comment.
