This song is pretty straight forward. It's about someone who feels trapped and manipulated in a Sanitarium (Nut House) to the point where they want to snap and fight back.
I think, more specifically, it's also based on the book (movie?) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which is a story about a sane man whose locked in an asylum. One of those horrible, Arkham Asylum-type facilities with incredibly violent individuals.
@@FandangoHoward Well yes, that as well.
@@jhamilton1007 I gotta learn to finish the reaction video before commenting lol. I feel like this happens a lot
@@FandangoHoward hahahaha! I do the same thing sometimes too.
Any one drawing parrallels, to where we are, right now?....
The overriding theme of Master of Puppets is Control, not military.
I've always thought the entire album was about power.
Master is about the power drugs have over you.
The Thing That Should Not Be is about the powerful Old Ones.
Sanitarium is about institutional power.
Disposable Heroes is about the power the generals have over their soldiers.
Leper Messiah is about holding power over others through religion.
And the titles of Battery and Damage Inc. speak for themselves.
I might be splitting hairs though since control would require power.
I think all the songs are about different powers that have control over you in different ways, you're both right
I believe if I remember right James said in an interview [or maybe Lars] it was about the recording industry. Been a minute since I seen that so could be false memory syndrome. LOL. Or that 420 short term........ um..........um......... wait.......... what?
Again I LOL....
Umm, control by the government by the military
@@michaeltubbs8171 control, because both goverment and military are predicated on it. ; )
This album is so classic it was entered into the Smithsonian music archive as one of the best works of art ever made. That is how brilliant and influential Master Of Puppets was and is.
When will Pink Floyd The Wall get put into The Smithsonian?
While And Justice for All was a great album, I think this is the peak of Metallica. The songwriting, lyrics, guitar, drums, and production were never better!
That guitar tone....I'd pay LARGE for it!
Dear Black People yall just shit on this iconic song from one of the founders of Heavy Metal.....The song is pretty self explanatry "SANITARIUM "......No Master of Puppets is NOT a military album .....you are thinking of the song ONE from And Justice For All.....
This song is what other metal songs aspire to be
This album reaction will be can't miss viewing for me. Leper Messiah, Orion, Lex might have an out of body experience.
Lex will have a headache after Orion. Lol but it would be awesome to watch her rock out!!
I think if Lex gets to Orion she will have her 1st true Metalgasm live on the couch, just like all us true metal heads did!!!!!!!!!!
@@jameslutz3458 I just find it astounding that she truly "feels" every note in any guitar solo, just like we did, and still do.
💫 R I 💫 N✨ is the greatest instrumental EVER written!
But the studio recording is the best!
@@jasonmartin2612
Why would she have a headache?
That song is the most metalodic song to listen to! 😆
If you watch the Oscar-winning movie One Flew Over the Cookoo’s nest (or read the novel on which it is based), you will deeply understand what James is singing about.
Great Movie
You beat me to it brother. Lol
It's one in a thousand time when movie is actually better than the novel on which it's based, imo.
@@robdaddy69 Fun fact: it had a screen play in Soviet Union. The film is so undeniably good it passed the censorship.
@@ijontichy994 lol, no. the novel is better imo.
Brad is already learning that it is heresy to stop the song during a solo, nice!
Took him long enough
its blasphemy to stop it . He needs to keep his hands to him self
hopefully.
Fucking amen to that!
I love how Lex smiles and her face lights up during the solos. Especially the first one at the 1 minute mark. Truly enjoying the music.
Hell yeah eyes closed and smiling. Just zoning out
I was overseas a few decades ago & a local asked me if I was into heavy metal. I said sure. He asked if I listened to metal lickah. I had no idea what he was talking about. He repeated it, "METAL LICKAH!" Nope, no idea, never heard of them. "You never heard of METAL LICKAH?" he asked shocked. No, what do they play? "One. Master of Puppets..." he started telling me. OH! YOU MEAN METALLICA! "Yes, that's what I said?" he exclaimed.
😂
"They milked that ended".. wait until you here Disposable Heroes, they milk the entire farm for the ending in that.
They already did that song
@@KillroyLP oh right, i'll check it out, thanks :)
What I loved about early Metallica (Before the Black album) is that after the music, the lyrics told a story.
This is my favourite Metallica song. My mom works at a "modern Sanitarium" you could say.. She works with mentally disturped, so I love the topic. This song is also different from the other songs on Master of Puppets (which is also my favourite Metallica album). I just love the sound of all the instruments and James' voice, and the story the song tells.
My favorite as well. I think it goes through the whole gammit of Metallica.
but a sanitarium is not a nut house. a sanitarium is where people go to get well from their illnesses. they could have some mental but not crazy mental. people can leave at their own free will from a sanitarium. . a sanitarium is an establishment for the medical treatment of people who are convalescing or have a chronic illness
@@allroadsleadtoRoam Did I say it was a "nut house"? No. I could visit my mother's place of work freely, my sister has many times. The people won't kill you on sight, a lot of them are schizophrenic and drug addicts, and can act like "normal people". As I said; my mother works at one, so I'm fully aware of what it is. In Denmark we have two places for people with schizophrenia, my mother's place of work, which deals with drug addiction, mild schizophrenia and mental disorders and then there's a place that deals with severe schizophrenia and mental disorders. I see neither as "nut houses".
Explanation from Metallica Wiki page:
a man who is trapped in a "sanitarium", which in this song is described as a mental asylum. He dreams of breaking free, and later in the song, there seems to be a mutiny of some sort in which the people trapped in the sanitarium rebel against the officials of the sanitarium, and James says he has "got some death to do" and that it "seems the only way of breaking free", probably implying that he is likely to kill the officials and break free
The song was inspired by "One Flew Over The Coockoo's Nest." Starring Jack Nicholson. Great film about a man forced into anger management in an asylum. Probably one of my favorite movies as well as one of my fav Metallica songs.
Brain injury rehab facilities always took this song as a diss when the staff would be doing rounds and I'd be in my room working out because I couldn't sleep and this is one of my favorite gym-anthems. The lyrics helped to motivate me in my fight to earn my freedom/100% discharge.
Military? The word “sanitarium” is literally part of the title. No need to overthink it, just an exploration of what a person committed to such an institution might feel. Y’all are awesome 👏😂
@@corepuncher spiral out
Lmao fr tho
During the Deftones live stream Brad was doing the same to Chino's lyrics even after everyone was telling him it's not literal.
actually you can freely leave a sanitarium. the whole story is about someone who has such a fear he wont even leave the place. james states " no locked doors, no windows barred, no things to make my brain seemed scarred (no drugs)". its all in the guys head," sleep my friend and you will see, the dream is my reality". the person can leave when ever they want. they just dont want anything to do with the outside world. a sanitarium isnt a nut house. its a place where people go to get their health back on track. some of those problems could just be something simple. you dont have to be crazy.
@@allroadsleadtoRoam There are also sanitariums where you can't leave, which is the type he's singing about. The "no locked doors" is what he wants and why he wants to break free...
I see our freedom in my sight
No locked doors, no windows barred
No things to make my brain seem scarred
Lex, you should definitely be rocking a Master of Puppets shirt. 🤘
Brad & Lex watching you take your metal journey brings me tremendous amounts of joy, I love all your vids but the rock/metal genre I enjoy most! I look forward to your future reactions as you continue down the rabbit hole and branch further into Metal-core and other sub-genres.
ok I just sub'd a few moments ago after watching your blackened reaction, I can tell i'm going to be binge watching every single one of your metallica videos now, the communication between Brad and Lex is astounding I'm absolutely loving their back and forth and theories and yet again i'm transfixed on the journey's Lex goes through during the solos and even during the riffs, I can tell by the nodding of her head and facial expressions she can hear each note god I love that!
This is the song that made me realise music can heal your soul. Awesome. 😍👍
Absolutely love you guys , binging all your videos
I love Lex smile... I just adore how she feels THE music, the vibe, all the notes and this stuff brings her joy and happiness. So beautiful reaction.
Today I listened this song 5 times. And now i got this ha ha
“Metal” “Lica” that’s how I taught myself how to spell Metallica when I was a kid. I’ve never heard anyone else say it like that. You guys are great!
One of my favorite songs of all time. Use to jam this when I was down and out man.
This song was use in the HBO movie “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills.” It’s a must watch if you can stomach it.
You guys are turning into true metal heads!! Awesome 😎👍
Evening from Manchester, UK. Loving all of your reactions, keep up the great work!
This song is my embodiment. I was locked in 3 mental institutions. 2 in Virginia and the one in my own mind. I was relased from the 2 in Virginia. Still locked in the third.
I'm sure I can speak for all metalheads from the 80s and 90s when I say this, I love it when I see young people hear metal like this for the first time and a big smile comes across their face. Great music is timeless.
Please, PLEASE do " Orion " I think Brad would especially enjoy it.
Agreed. Awesome one to react to.
Such a classic tune. Great review guys
This is one if the reasons why this album has constantly rated the greatest metal album of all time
Guitar makes you so happy Lex it is a great feeling to watch someone lose themselves in music.
One of my fav Metallica song.. you guys are awesome!
People are going to request you do "Orion"! You could kick it up a notch and go back to "Ride the Lightnings" Call of Ktulu, then "Orion" and finish that set off with "And Justice for All's" To Live is to Die! It would make a badass live video!
Freakin AWESOME song!!! Great reaction!
This is album does not have a "bad" song on it.
Hits me in the Belly i remember my teens hard with this song soo sad miss my friend . But i love the song and the band the early Metallica is the all time best!
I would love to see your reactions to two of Metallica's instrumentals, Orion and The Call of Ktulu.
Oh hell yes. Orion is.....I have no words for how amazing it is.
Yes, but why would you leave out to live is to die?? Personally my favourite of all metallica instrumentals ;)
What up guys love the reactions and the energy you guys are awesome 👏
One of the best Ballad of the entire Thrash Metal history... 🎸🎸🎸🍺🍺🥃🥃🥃
You are just a pair of great people. Greetings from metal Poland.
At one point this was my most played song on my computer playlist in the thousands, never gets old.
You two are my two favorite people on the Internet!
Lex, your smile makes me smile. Keep shining girl.
Hey guys. Great reaction, again! Keep up the great work. You’re such an amazing couple. All my best to you both🤘
As far as the ‘Metallica’ name is concerned, Lars (drummer) was chatting to his friend, back at the dawn of the 80’s, who was a magazine editor. The editor was putting together a monthly magazine dedicated to rock/metal music. The only thing he was missing was a title. He asked Lars what he thought about naming the magazine Metallica. To which Lars replied, ‘terrible name! It’ll never take off’. Then proceeded to steal the name for his new band. And the rest is history ☺️
Lex i love your facial reactions with the solos you actually feel the music. Brad is more analytics.
A lot of our military coming back from or ended up in these places. Thank you for the great content keep doing what you're doing! Love you guys
Unfortunately true. Been committed with them at the VA. It's referred as the "flight deck" at the few I've been too.
#2 favorite Metallica song. Gives me goosebumps every damn time ❤❤❤❤
Me encanta ver como analizan ustedes dos este album, yo nunca lo analice tan bien desde las trincheras...
Brad’s “Metal Lica” analysis hilarious🤣. You two so genuine keep it up!
The look on her face when the solos are playing!
If you're lucky enough to experience 'autumn' where you live, put this album on, stare out a window, and watch the leaves blow around while the sky argues with itself about whether it should rain, or start snowing. It is then that you will realize how much music encompasses emotion.
I just found these two gems (Brad&Lex) after spotting them in Derek Brooks "Master of Puppets" compilation. The contrast between Brad & Lex is great, and I love to see the joy of music on Lex' appearance. When she hears the songs I've listened to since it came out. It's magic for me as well to re-live the experience once more, 35 years later. Love it. Great work you two!
Metallica are magical, they will always "take you somewhere " with their music! They're not the greatest metal band in the world for nothing! I've not found another band that can do this to me except for maybe Alice in Chains! I suggest you react to their song Wherever I May Roam, off of the Black album. Lex will absolutely 💯 love it. Brad might be surprised as well. James plays a sitar and the different sounds are incredible! It's almost like an Egyptian feel in the intro! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G song!! Awesome reaction btw!
try with Death chuck schuldiner is a genius and amazing songwritter
I’ve been begging them to react to wherever I may roam the video version for a loooong time. I suggested the video version to help put it in a little more context for them. But I agree your comment is spot on
They stopped being Metallica after the Black Album.
@@davidkringlen2479 they’re still Metallica. They’re still responsible for a TON of classic metal that can never be taken away from them
I liked this song so much back in the day, I bought a guitar and learned to play it.
It may sound strange but listening to both of your reactions, just realized that I love the sounds of both your voices.
Lex always looks so damn happy for those solos. Love it.
That is so wild. I was just thinking about you doing this song last night.
That song always takes me to my childhood, been teenager on the 90’ god I’m so old…:(
Such a classic METALLICA song. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 IMO one of their best. Along with One and my personal favorite Fade To Black. I’m loving the bands and artists you are reacting to. I’ve watched several now. Keep up the great work !! ✌️
Still my favorite song of my favorite band. It was my "theme" song whilst i was in such a place for three months because of depressions. Listened to it every day, helped me a lot. :)
It is only about people who live in and out of a sanitarium. There is not much more behind it. Just about people like me, even when i was only one time in such a place.
Metallica has the BEST intros Ever!! Old Metallica with Cliff's classical training made their Intros the Best in metal!! Metal story telling at the highest level!!
Iron Maiden, is right up there as well. But, Metallica were Rock God's then, Crazy then!! I'm 56 & seen them 6x when they were in their Prime!!
I'm VERY Honored & Lucky that I got to live & Rock the 80's and 90's when it was on fire 🔥 🎸❤🎶 🎼 Best times if my Entire life!! Love ya guys, keep up the Excellent Reactions!! 🤘💯🎸
That song is a old gold!!!!!
"One Flew Over the CooCoo's Nest" Is an insanely good film good watch.
Love seeing you vibing with it, Brad. We'll make proper metalheads out of you two yet. ;-)
That smile on Lex's face all we want!!!!
I must admit, I would only subscribe for the Lex's joy of hearing the solos:) But that's not the only thing I like about this channel for sure. Keep going guys, you bring joy to many of us metalheads.
One of metallica's best songs. I've seen them in concert three times. master of puppets tour was insane. The younger generation will never know concerts like these heave metal gods. Love how you are rocking it Lex. Never lose the passion for Metal.
this is my all time favorite Metallica song. the intro gets me in a mood everytime
Beautiful song...🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
That smile on lex’s face at the beginning listening to the guitars. Lol that was dope
Metallica’s “One” is another must listen.
They've already done One a couple of months ago
So they've done that One you could say.
@@OneRealOG don't dad
I lived my childhood as this song described!! It was a living hell and 1 year later it was closed for cruel and un human conditions. 40 year's later this song still brings hurt and tears to my eyes, Down in a hole saved my life I was looking at 40+ years in prison and it gave me hope.
Been there, done that! Surprise! Responsible adult here.
I luv it Brad is like trying to get into it, where as Lex is just like "hell ya" you see head bangers are born not made! :) IT'S IN OUR DNA!
Dam that's what keeps trickin me up! Lol That was right on time lex
Bought this "tape" back in 1986, was hooked!
This was the song that got Me into Metallica! Yesss!!
Lex loves her some Metallica!
My favorite album by them followed by And Justice For All. Nice reaction.
The song was inspired by oscar-awarded movie *One flew over the cuckoo's nest* which is about being in an asylum as a "patient"
The amp they used on that album is legendary because of them and a few other big names (Santana, John Petrucci, Steve Lukather). Made by a small boutique company at the time in Petaluma California called Mesa Boogie. It was the Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+.
"One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" is a MUST SEE!
These 2 are so cute together. Lex is the true metalhead." Oh it is to short"!
It's difficult to find a more hard-hitting set of words than "Mirror stares back hard".
I love her saying this song is too short!
I totally agree!!!
She is one of the CUTEST lil budding metal girlies I've ever seen. I love to see her jamming out! You can literally SEE how much she is into every guitar sound she hears! You GO girl!
One of my Metallicas fave songs! Top!
BradandLex, It's couched in those terms so we can relate to it better. By seeing how it relates to military vets we can safely empathize with them. But the more we are able to relate the true meaning back to ourselves the more we see that, to some extent, we are all living in a self-imposed sanitarium of striving to reconcile actual, objective sanity with functional, subjective sanity and living with the choices and bargains we make.
My favorite song off of my favorite metal album
They were looking for band names at same time their friend Ron Quintana was going to start a heavy metal Fanzine so he was choosing names for that as well... Two of the names he had in mind were Metallica (the latin form for metallic) and metal mania... Lars liked the name metallica for the band so they went with that and Ron went on to publish MetalMania magazine....
This was my theme song growing up in the 80s.
I have not gotten g9osebumps from that song in probably 25 years. Fuk they were so Good!!
Lex's smile could light up a room, man. She's beautiful.
Think I've watched every metal review you guys have done. Lex hit it right on the head..."it takes me somewhere". That, and its plain as day on your face...you are officially a metal head :D
Dope reaction This is my fave song on the Puppets album 😀
"Ahhh! It's so SHORT!!" I'm thinking to myself..."Just wait, hon, just wait."
I think Lex has a deep "thing" for Kirk's solos. But, then again...we ALL do!
Because Kirk's solos are all the same. Always. He discovered a unique formula that works, though. Gotta give Kirk that much. I just personally wonder how much more MASSIVE Metallica would have become if Mustaine had stayed in the band. Then again, we wouldn't have Megadeth. And Lars couldn't play Megadeth tunes, anyway. I dunno.
@@jhamler1 lmao, how are you and other Megadeth stans this stupid when Mustaine doesn't even try to harmonize or actually find melody in most of his solos?
Dave is a aural turn off whenever he solos before the 90's, it's just a mesh of atonal wannabe Jazz fuckery. It's even more pentatonic and chromatic randomness than Kirk, just no wah.
This song for example literally has Kirk doing the perfect melodic countor in counterpoint to Jame's Minor Add Chord progression. Mustaine doesn't know how to feel or improvise in solos to me - sure as hell not how Friedman or Poland did.
You'd have to be hating to denounce Kirk's sense of melodicism on this whole album, RTL and AFJA, cause he was creative on every album up until Load to me. TBA was good for solos, but not like these albums.
Hammett's biggest variety of solos in this album, they're literally all different theoretically. Plus, he used a bunch of different of effects (and types of objects to pick, like a waxed candle for the texture of "The Thing That Should Not Be" solos) besides to wah to be entertaining.
Great one!
One of my all time favorite Metallica tunes.
It is so cool to see Lex fall in love with Metallica. You are right Lex they are great in concert, very theatrical. You would love them.
Watch some of their newer live stuff, they still go pretty good considering how long they have been playing. James Hetfield(singer & rythm guitar) just turned 58!
The last "older" musician that I saw was the last time that I saw Prince. He 2as in his 50s at the time too, but he moved like he was still 17. I was really impressed with him live.
