Beyond his unforgettable time on Guiding Light, Grant will look back at his role as “Alec McIntyre” on All My Children and his short-term role on Capitol. As a director, he has lent his talent to As the World Turns and the powerful play, Breathing Under Dirt written by his best pal, Michael O’Leary.

Join us for a fun hour on April 3rd as we reminisce about Grant’s time in Springfield, delve into other career highlights, his enduring 37-year marriage to Sherry Ramsey, and share anecdotes about their passion for animals. I remember the last day that Guiding Light aired i cried like a baby all day !!!! This interview with Grant made my day . As I sat here listening to this interview and reminiscing about the individual episodes that put a smile on my face. I think one of my favorite episodes was with a Lionel Richie song played at the prom.

He's awesome. It's true, Grant and Mikey both seemed like such great guys that we feel like they are friends whom we've grown up with. Seeing their ongoing friendship post-GL on social media is a comforting feeling, like if they're still friends, there's still some right in the world. ❤❤ My mother always laughed and said she knew my teen years might be rough on her when I was about 10 yrs old, and she saw my face when the newly casted Phillip came on our tv screen with no shirt on. 🤣🤣

So nice seeing Grant again, I just loved him on GL, yes there was a time he was gone, and it was sad, then when he was back,,,Oh we were so happy, and to see him and Beth get back together; they really both belonged together on G.L..., hoping like someone else mentioned, that it would be nice to see him on one of the Soaps, again!! and so happy he rescues Animals, anyone who does that truly have a big heart, so many sadly, are homeless, and need a Good Home!!! Thank You and Sherry for that. 🐅🐈🐈‍⬛

🎉 Anniversary greetings from coastal Mississippi. My dear friend Alan, this was one of the best episodes. Thank you for blessing us with Grant. I watched him on AMC. He will always be Phillip Granville Spaulding to me. My cafe, the Light House was packed to celebrate your anniversary and watch Springfield Illinois own son. Once again gracious 4 year anniversary. OMG…I stumbled upon this and was floored. I have missed these shows and Guiding Light was my favorite.
I graduated high school the same time the four musketeers did and the show helped me through some hard times. I got to visit the set in 89 and unfortunately no Grant. This was during a time when Beth was locked in an asylum so I have a picture standing next to that bed. But I did get a picture with Maeve Kincaid and the incomparable Michael Zaslow.
After 9/11 I read somewhere that Grant and his lovely wife helped rescue animals from places where people never came home. I wrote him a few years ago and never got an answer, but I always wanted to say as I have become a cat lady in my later years, how much I remember this and how much it still means that somebody thought to do that.
I sure do wish that they would have old episodes available on streaming. How awesome it would be to relive some of that youth.

I wish he would have been able too do that. I stayed with a Guiding Light since I was a kid watching Bert and Papa Bauer And Burt. It ended way too soon. So many people still miss it, including me. Thanks Alan such a great 4 th anniversary celebration with grant. And just what I needed after earlier today having to deal with the cesspool of you tube and responding to a video on the so called unstriped evh fender frankenstrat style guitars that fender wants to charge people 2 grand for missing the whole spirit of Eddie van Halen which was you dont need to spend 2 grand for a guitar and if they don't make what you want build it yourself
. And of course people were commenting I want Eddie's tone but don't want the stripes so me bieng me I said you don't need to spend 2 grand to do that I was like go on Amazon and order a basswood body for less than 60 dollars and either spend 300 dollars for a genuine fender neck or you can spend 60 on a fender style Chinese knockoff guitar neck and just do what Eddie did and put your ow guitar together even if you need an axe and chisel because you have not learned to use a router yet. and if you want the beat up reliicked look you can always attach chains to the guitar and drag it through a parking lot like Eddie did to stress test the guitar. And maybe I was bieng a little too much of a smart Alec but I was trying to make a point. And yes there are exceptions but not in this case where paying over a thousand dollars or more is worth it for a guitar such as as jason beckers charity auction to help raise money for his continued expenses advcare from als and Jason has the rare kind of als more like what Stephen hawking had where you can live with it fur a long time even years.
And Alan the same concepts apply to daytime and creativity and yes maybe I miss the big remotes and the bigger budgets but when soaps had them they were often wasteful.
And if we look at y and r today it's budget is not the best but Josh Griffith is able to right now do great stories with so much memories of what Douglas did on shows like guiding light atwt loving even without big budgets and I think that's an important lesson that grant exemplifies but also things Paul Rauch understood and Chris goutman you need good stores first and a good foundation first once that's established then you have, so much more to spend on Things like remotes when you need it just like a guitar but if you spend lots of money on something that's wasteful when you can make the same thing for a thousand dollars less then you won't have that money when you need it or to invest in other things and that's what happened with soaps too.
Anyway another thing occurred to me over the weekend after watching old as the world turns 1987 episodes of as the world turns and then thinking of grant and the Beth Bradley Raines storyline I think Douglas wrote too and then relized that's a lot like the lily slater storyline done at loving and after reading comments on how stubidly the women of oakdale must have been to have fallen for James Stenbeck but then I remembered with Douglas rapists always died so did viliians eventually and how ahead of his time Doug Marland was but other writers years before the me too movement even existed and even daytime in general because they dealt with incest domestic voilence real life issues too like Phillip struggling with not wanting to be bad like his adopted father Alan even though he was really a marler.
But even Alan with Chris bernue was not all bad which is a lot like life. Anyway happy 4 th Alan. And your continued success in bringing us joy we still need it with what's going on in today's world where shockingly the compassion threshold is less today than it was even 15 years ago with bigotry and hatred. Towards those that might not agree with you or those that might have a transgender family member or our gay. Or so many other things.

I watched GL from about 1982 till until its end. My father was actually the one who got me hooked on it. He was an older parent and was retired when I was in college. I'd be working on projects at the dining table and I'd hear the GL dialogue as my dad sat on the couch watching it. I'd think, "What the hell is going on?" and have to go in there and see. I then became a regular viewer, scheduling everything around GL's time slot. I felt as though I grew up with Phillip, Rick, Beth and Mindy. To this day, I dream about the characters, notably Phillip, even though I didn't have a crush on him. (My crushes through the years were Tony Reardon, Lujack/Nick, Gus, and Jonathan.) It's heartening to see Grant looking great and basically the same as he did on GL. I've always admired his dedication to animals.

My mom's mom died of lung cancer and never smoked a day in her life. My grandpa's second wife (who was always my grandma) smoked her whole life and never had a cancer scare. I think some people are predisposed to it.

I agree, Brett. It sucks either way.

Interesting story on the portrait. I would've thought it was something he got to take home from GL.

Great interview. And, you even threw in AMC & Capitol (which I watched but did not have on Bingo card) too. That said, when you showed Phillip at the Springfield Country Club I wanted you to play it full volume & for you & Grant to be quiet. LOL!!! I started watching GL around 1978. Great memories. Keep up the good work.

All good. You’re allowed to speak. It’s like …….your show. LOL!!! GL & ATWT were my jam. They were best shows. It was basically Broadway every day.

Grant, you look the exact same as you did in the 80s when I would run home from school to watch The Guiding Light at 3pm. We got out at 2:50. lol

Just watching this. So Grant A. had an apartment right around the corner from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts on 30th & Madison. There were a lot of ummmmm working girls in that area in the early 80s.

I really enjoyed this interview. His differentiation of a "star of show" and a "heart of a show" was quite interesting, especially a show like "Guiding Light" where a "heart of the show" was integral.
I do really like Kim Zimmer as an actress, but I do believe that Reva Shayne's presence on GL did contribute to GL drifting from possessing a moral center/"star" of the show.
Now that I really look back at it, especially after Maureen Bauer's death, Michelle Bauer and her father Ed should have remained the heart of the series with those other characters' lives revolving around them. Jerry verDorn did deservedly become that much needed "heart of the show" with time and a fabulous actor he was indeed.
Now that I look back at it, as beautiful, charismatic, charming, and talented as she is, I believe that too much focus on Reva really hurt "Guiding Light" and was not really as needed. With the right actress, I would have made Michelle Bauer a doctor or nurse and focused the series more centered around her...with the right actress in the role. I would have preferred maybe Tamara Braun, Joie Lenz, Rebecca Budig, or Natalia Livingston in the part of Michelle for example.
Regarding Michelle's mother, I would have had Maureen's heart go to Annie Dutton back then. Perhaps, since Michelle's biological mother Claire Ramsey was mischievous enough, the writers didn't feel that it would be good to have Michelle deal with both Claire and Annie.

I hear that they are talking about creating 2 new soap operas for day time. Instead of creating they need to bring back GL and One Life to Live.
