    I missed these episodes when they first aired, but I have to say it looks like Joan Collins brought a new energy to the show and to the Spaulding family. Too bad she didn't hang around for a year or two. (But how did Alexandra suddenly acquire a British accent?)
    On the other hand, it might be best she left when she did. There's no way that Joan Collins would put up with stumbling around the frozen woods in New Jersey, as all the GL actors are required to do nowadays.

    Damn Joan Collins was good on GL. The producers sure messed up when they let her walk away!

      She requested to leave due to other commitments; it was a joint decision between the soap and Joan herself. Disappointing, as Joan Collins was made for daytime television.

    If they had to replace Beverlee Mckinsey, Joan Collins was the best choice because like Bev she lights up the screen. You have to watch her, she has a rare beauty too and both have excellent acting abilities.

    Pretty sure Marj Dusay took over the role of Alexandra from Beverly McKinsey in early 90's. Marj left for All My Children around 2000. Joan Collins picked up the role for a short while and Dusay returned to Guiding Light after Joan left.

    While Beverlee McKinsey will always be Alexandra Spaulding to me, at least the Joan Collins version a force. Marj Dusay-everyone always walked all over her. The writing and her presence just weren't there.

      liamhen Marj Dusay is a good actress but never as elegant and fierce as Beverlee McKinsey. McKinsey played the part as if she was the queen. Joan Collins here could do the damn thing, but the writing wasn’t so great by this time. This show was holding on by a tread at this time.

      @@a.b.s_productions I agree with this comment. GL always had great actors,but there were a lot of inconsistencies throughout this era. I hated Jeffrey, Edmund, and everything San Cristobal. Also, there were some other aspects of the show that were not right during this time. I felt like Pam Long, Millee Taggert, Stephen Demorest, Lorraine Broderick, or Nancy Curlee should have been at the helm during this time period. I would have preferred Jill Phelps, Michael Laibson, or Edward Scott (of "The Young and the Restless") and Pam Long as Executive Producer (s) of GL. Paul Rauch had a few great years at the show, but the show was too inconsistent after Cynthia Watros left the series.

    Really like Dame Joan's hair in this scene - the color and the style (except I would have lost the bangs) - most likely a wig though since she's owned up to wearing them for years.

    She's so much more capricious than the other Alexandras, fun spin. I always found Beverlee more controlled/controlling and Marj more aggressive/demanding and I like both, but hadn't actually seen Joan's turn, only heard about the stint. Her version is a gleeful sadist, my goodness.

    I'd stopped watching and moved abroad by this point. How did they explain Alexandra suddenly having an English accent?

    • @EyesofLauraMars
      @EyesofLauraMars Рік тому +1

      The accent was likely never addressed. This reminds me of another inconsistency regarding a character recast. Over @OLTL the character of Blair was originally portrayed by Asian actress Mia Korf. A year or so later she left the show. The character was then recast with caucasian actress Kassie Wesley (now DaPaiva) (ex-Chelsea, GL) in the role. I recall a scene when Blair#1 was playing the part, where Robin Strasser who played her sister Dorian was speaking to a P.I. over the phone or something. In the scene she gave a description of Blair as being an *Asian* woman. So if writers only realized their audience is loyal & pick up on these inconsistencies, they wouldn't do such a disservice to us by neglecting to address these inconsistencies. They may very well have explained the racial difference in appearance, but my gut tells me they never did.

    Thankfully Joan Collins was only a place holder. As a Dynasty diva, her attention was focused elsewhere with the result that she brought nothing to the role of the multifaceted, complex, cool, yet passionate Alexandra Spalding, while the sultry voiced Beverlee McKinsey and the elegant Marj Dusai were superb in her portrayal!

    It is a shame that this family is the sham it is now. A SHAME. I miss these days so much I could just cry to no end. Oh, and Joan Collins is NO Alexandra. Bev & Marj are the only Alexandra's in my book. That girl is awful. Ahh, but thank you for these memories of the best show ever.

    I'm sorry but Joan is past her prime here. She looks and sounds too old for the part. I think this was just a cash grab for her. Beverly Mckinsey(R.I.P.) was so much better in this role.
