This is episode two of a four-part series covering my first year of full-time camping in 2021. Episode one covered the backstory of how that became possible. In this episode, I cover the behind the scenes of filming and editing full-time. There are chapters in the playback bar as usual if you want to pick and choose parts.
Episodes 3 and 4 (for fall and winter) will be released throughout the year and they’ll cover the behind the scenes of what it takes to be able to be able to do this full-time including:
-the youtube and finances side of things for fall
-a variety of frequently asked questions we get in the comments for the final episode
I quit my job for a year of wilderness camping - summer

Showing Xander as the sloppy lip smacking eater was just beautiful lol.
Classic
Xander and Jon are my favorite videos. Just love the content between those two. So hilarious and entertaining. 😅😅😅🥰🥰🥰
4.5 hours of material I've probably already watched. But ready to watch again. Best channel on UA-cam.
Jon, your morals and your standards are your North Star. Thank you for your honesty, authenticity, and your standards in this process. We all benefit from your conservative and cautious approach in post-production. Thank you for sharing it all!
Very much appreciated :)
There you are! Was starting to worry you and Erin finally just said f it and went on a permanent camping trip.
new "lost lakes" always make me happy ;)
2:41:53 All these moments guys, I find them the most valuable ones in my very depressed recent life. This literally keeps me alive... Thank you.
Hang in there...brighter days ahead 💚
Well done. The behind-the-scenes sections are really.interesting. And I love hearing about your and Erin's stories and what you are thinking about. Thank you for the engagement and wedding videos. That is so generous of you both. People are always the most interesting parts of YT videos. When you let us into the secret proposal plan or your long term aspirations to catch salmon, us viewers are cheering you on. So emotional. I like your sharing insights on sustainability, park management, wildlife management, etc. I don't need camping tutorials, but I enjoy seeing a cleverly tightened tarp. I like the Amok features. Ideas on making cooking easier, tastier, cheaper, faster, safer are always welcome.
Fantastic summary of your YT career, Jon. I truly admire your dedication and passion for filmmaking. This is by far the best video you've ever made. Love the part about the camera equipment, the editing prosess, and all of the other phases you go through as a content creator. Keep it up, and keep evolving :) Cheers from Norway
I found myself astonished when you described your difficulty in keeping a fish upon catching it. Astonished because how exactly similar your mindset is to mine in that scenario. Looking at a helpless and beautiful fish, thinking "I have other food, why should i take this life?"
The world needs more people like you, my friend. Your respect for nature is a characteristic that every person should have.
I totally agree 👍 that is just one reason I love this channel ❤️
I think the same way and for a long time I thought that Jon should just leave them alone if he doesn't want to eat one! But he just shows his dedication to conservation with the way he handles them or rather, tries not to stress them any more than he has to.
Just finished this one! Wow man, amazing stuff. You are definitely far from a “hack” lol. Loved seeing the trips again like this. The information you provided in the intermissions was so invaluable and well said. If storytelling is high on your priorities list, than you’ve absolutely nailed it. Amazing what a one-man crew can actually do. Looking forward to part 3 as well as your 2024 trips! Ps: the engagement scene always gets me. Again, nice work. Cheers buddy 🍻
Thank you so much! 🍻
47:10 - Shots fired!!
😂
Yay finally something good on UA-cam to watch hello John😊👍
Make them laughing, make them cry, make them wait! A Hitchcock
You are in good company John.
I know I've watched the majority of this footage. But man, another amazing video. I just love your editing, hearing your thoughts, the nature you share with us. It calms me. Thank you
Thank you so much :)
I can't even imagine how much time this took to edit. Looking forward to watching it. Thanks again for the great videos, you should get NFB funding for these!
My wife and I are super excited to watch this, thanks for all your hard work and dedication man. I cant imagine doing all of this myself, keep up the great content!
I'm enjoying this series so much. I can't imagine the hours of editing you spend on each episode. Thanks.
4hrs, looking forward to it!!
Perfect timing! I was just wondering what to watch and now I've got enough content in this one video to last a couple of days!
Love the BTS clips. My daughter is in film and her rule is 7:1 raw footage to final so 10:1 is in the range for sure. Keep up the good work and can’t wait for the rest of the series.
As a sound designer and recordist for 10 years i’ve always liked your attention to detail with sound design, transitions and fading etc. Thank you for the hard work creating all these videos!
2:44:44 I'm not crying, you're crying.
Thank you for sharing that special moment with all of us Jon.
@@vryce6322 💚
Love how you edit your trips & the storytelling ist top notch! Thanks
You are doing what many of us like to do. Brave John.
Greetings from North Sweden
Day off sick, found this and feel better. Thanks Jon.
Careful, I've been known to nauseate people 🙂
I've been a subscriber for quite a long time. This fresh perspective of what we have seen before, what is new, and how it all works is a breath of fresh air. We see your abilities evolve before our eyes and grow to appreciate the work required to make it look like it is no work at all. With reference to Erich, yes we will close our eyes and find ourselves in a new place. And it is wonderful, not because it is unexpected, but because we know we cannot do everything in one life and it is great to find companions who stretch our limits and share our sense of adventure and beauty. I only wish we were in a position to do the same for you and Erin. Please accept this "like" as one of the hundreds before and know that each one is sincerely sent.
I am a on and off viewer. Great respect for what you do and your guts in doing it. All the best.
Thank you for the incredible effort you put in. Especially loved the triple header or quadruple TROUT catching with you and Joe Robinet. Something I will go back and view again. If I can’t visit Ontario, I can live it through you. We enjoy your respect for nature. Thank you for sharing with us.
Yes! 4 hours and 35 minutes of finest Canadian adventure, right here in my living room.
Canada is so vast, one person could explore it their whole life and prob still have areas that they hadn’t seen. I love how it’s mostly wilderness still and not overpopulated like here in the states 😟 it’s sad, cites and suburbs everywhere. Our parks are the only wilderness left and so now tons of people are forced to flock to them so they are even crowded 😢
wow a long one again I'm so excited.
I knew it was coming and I'm not disappointed. Thank you and best regards Jon, and Erin
Everyone, have a great week as well. CC
Hi Jon. You are about the only one that can hold my attention for this long .🇨🇦
I’m an hour into this, really savoring it. I really like the intermission, very cool to see behind the scenes. I appreciate all the work you put into this.
Yes!! Been looking forward to this for weeks!! And i’m so glad its 4.5 hours, several evenings of content for me 😎
In London (UK) and cannot wait to get home this evening to watch new Lost Lakes video! Living vicariously through this channel...
Letsss goooo! So pumped for another one of these
Loving this!. Your storytelling is what sets you apart. Thank you good sir!
Starting my day with this video. I really appreciate all the work you do to bring your stories and journeys to UA-cam. Your respect for nature and the wilderness places you explore are great teaching opportunities for people who are and will be following your channel.
Cannot wait to watch the whole thing! My husband and I went on what for us is a challenging kayak trip today on the southern shore of Superior, and when it got tough I truly thought of you and Erin, “up there” on the other side, and all the amazing stuff you do! That thought-ok, and a Snickers bar-helped me keep going! Thanks for your wonderful and inspiring work.
The editing and production quality is insane. Very impressed as always.
Thank you for bringing respectful and intimate content of the great outdoors!
This is simply the best UA-cam video I’ve ever seen. Diverse, educational, fresh, fascinating. I really appreciate the way you convey yourself and your experiences on here Jon, that I felt compelled to comment. Hey from Australia and thanks so much
I just love your channel. Your films are stunningly beautiful. You are no way a "hack". Your cinematography, editing and music bring us all into your world. A world that many of us would never be able to experience. Thank you for sharing this with us.
@@karannewton3481 thank you so much!
WOW! You are a talented young man. You brought tears to this old man’s eyes. (But don’t tell anyone).
Man you are really good at this. Love that you took a risk and did what your heart desired.
Thanks a lot Mike :)
Love your videos. You do such a great job of bringing your viewers along on your trips. As a 70 year old I can appreciate the effort it takes. 👍🏼
GO FOR IT! I am 75 and have not experienced what you have in the wild. DO IT! I think it is LOVELY and so are you and Erin
Happy camping and fishing 👍
I dream of being as free as you with nature. I have so much to learn but your videos always inspire and educate. Thank you for such beautiful content.
We love you Jon ! 🤗💚 Thank you for everything you do. You're bringing us true joy. Keep being you 🛶
💚
Thanks Jon. Can’t wait 😊
I’m an hour into it,🎉👍👏🙌🏻❤️. Jon your videos are outstanding.
Look forward for all new! Get with it John, us old folks who enjoy watching all your adventures!
Thank you so much for having an excellent camera. Can really enjoy all of the great North and the beautiful flowers. Remind me deeply. Of being up North and I miss it so much, thank you. P s I miss seeing aaron
Beautiful work done on this. Your music choices are all special, but the music and clips of you and Erin after your proposal are really moving. Thank you!!
What a treat! World is so beautiful when looking through your eyes. Flow of fresh air
You're dropping some game on your film and edit process! Great info. Loved the LOTR monologue 😂
Loved every second of this. There were so many moments that I closed my eyes and immediately was transported to Northern Ontario. Thanks for documenting and sharing such a marvelous area.
Again, I have to say what a great cinematography!!
OMG! That little Mink is so dang cute! I love how it kept popping up to say hi!
Hope you stay healthy and are able to make videos for years to come good sir.
Such a talented vlogger. I love watching these videos. Gorgeous land out there.
Those falls were awesome. Great video as always. Keep enjoying this life we have on earth.
Just found this channel, I appreciate nature so much, God Bless❤
Although I've watched all of your videos, the part one was phenomenal. Excited to watch part 2!!!
Jon, please keep your style of vlogging and editing. Never change it, or at least not too often if you find something that works better for you and us. Your channel is one of the very very few that makes me contented, relaxed and happy 😊. You are definitely NOT a hack 💚. Please don’t hire an editor. Loved the Xander cameos. I hope he didn’t charge you much for using them 😂😂.
Hahah thanks so much! :)
If I can't be camping,.fishing, or birding, I can at least enjoy it through your own experiences until I get back out there myself! Also, congrats to the two of you!! ❤❤
Excellent. Yes Lost Lakes sounds like all kinds
of wonderful.
I love the intermittent pauses for humor, a bit of acting, while ashore. That's icing on an already good cake. Concerning the mine, you enter in the 21st century, leave in 1870 with a long grey beard and a satchel of gold. Who knew? A very nice collection of summertime videos.
Hahah thank you :)
Excellent timing!! Just finished rewatching the last episode!
Hi Jon, im wishing you and your wife Erin a " Happy Canada Day".🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Have a great day. I love your content. I have binged watch everyone of your videos. So beautiful and put together professionally. And they make me laugh too. Stay safe, and cant wait for more.🥰🥰🥰
U will always have a full video watcher including ads and that's me 👍 BTW, eating and cooking are some of the most important parts, they are like ASMR for me 😅
🙏
I love the fishing!
Your videos are incredibly beautiful. I feel like I have seen things that I will never see. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.
Now i can spend some quality time. Thank you for sharing your adventures
the quality and editing in your videos are top notch.
The longer the better 🎉
Just want to say that this series has so far been amazing! Also as a side note your vlogging, editing, voice over, music selection, jump cuts, slow motion, time lapse, mico/wildlife filming, drone footage, commentary and educational content is by far the best of any channel I’ve seen.
I absolutely love what you are doing and cannot tell you how refreshing and wonderful it is to watch your journey. I think you have all the right mindsets and direction to make a huge positive impact on the industry and world.
Keep it up, and keep doing what you’re doing! You are an inspiration to so many and I always look forward to your next project/video.
Sending love and appreciation from wyoming.
Truly appreciate that Tyler! 👋💚
Your videos are always a treat taking us on your adventures with you.
I also enjoy seeing Erin on trips too.
Bless you both and safe travels.
My boyfriend and I now have a nightly ritual of watching your videos- I can’t tell you much we love them!
Thanks you two!
the proposal was so heartwarming followed with laughter of my precious lolol
To me, you and Erin are a great love story. You’re both truly blessed.
These videos are so impressive. When on trips I've always tried to think of how I would film it and how you do it. It is so smart. Can't wait for more content.
Working my way through the second half - may have to do it 2 sittings. My favourite part so far was your engagement and the sentiments around it. It brought up so many emotions, memories and thoughts - I can't say more. Thanks so much for sharing that.
Edit: All day rain and unable to do any beekeeping work so I finished the vid. Looking forward to "Fall"... and to the fall when I get out a few times myself. Amazing stuff Jon
Very much appreciated sir!
Not a radio voice!?
One of the most calming and soothing voices I've heard.
Love your channel. You have taken this to a new level. As a senior I would like to see a little more content about setting up camp, hammock, cooking, relaxing by the fire. It may be boring to you but for a lot of us seniors, who just can’t get out there like we used to, it refreshes our memories of past adventures. With video it is almost like being there. Loved the clip with Xander. Thanks for your tireless work.
Appreciate your support and feedback Lawrence!
Watched this one in segments. I am so happy for you, and thankful I get to benefit from seeing all these places I won’t have time to get to. Your pink salmon excitement was palpable. We paddled the Mississagi River in September 2 years ago - low water made it tough but the best river trip of my life. Happy July 1 weekend Jon & Erin 😊
Much appreciated Derek 🙂🙂
Oh man!!¡!!!! Those pictures of those sun sets at your one of your last campsiggts were great. And the time laps of the campsight at the end of the video. Thanks
Fish jumping into the boat in the first 30 minutes of the video haha
It's weird...I've never been camping or canoeing but I truly enjoy watching these videos; they are relaxing. Lovely views of the water. I plan to eventually try the above tho; anyway thanks for sharing. It is so inspiring to see people follow their passions. May your journeys supply you with peace, love, and joy (and fortune).
As for the music, I love how you use it, and your choice. You are right, it could ruin the mood, which, why I watch your show is to relax and go to a different place in nature.... so well done, in my opinion
“It has to revolve around passion, what I’m sharing here”. Beautiful way to describe the exact thing we feel watching your videos. Keep it up man world needs you!
Amazing. Nobody can be in your head or control your thoughts except you and your ego. No one else. ✌️ 🛶
Love this. I have always enjoyed your cinematography, especially when compared to other camping channels. Your effort to make good pieces stands out!
Thank goodness! We just started to watch the ONLY video left in your library that we haven’t seen. Thank you for what you do.
Things I'll always love: rainy day LOTR skits, casual dropping of inspirational quotes, chewing footage avoidance
😂
Jon! the entire videos you do are always the best, right down to the music! The music is perfection along with every other aspect.
So nice to find a camp spot that you are the first one...Kinda special neat. Nice time and glad you are out and about! Neat places. Thanks for the adventures!
All nature is functional that is why it is always beautiful. We just may not understand the function. LOL
Love the music you choose , in my opinion it adds to the atmosphere of the scene.
