    Hi from Dave S in North Pole, Alaska. I carefully watched your video and would like to congratulate you on your hard work. I am guessing you are in your mid twenties, about the age I was when I moved to northern Alaska 51 years ago. I lived near the Brooks Range above the Arctic Circle for many years and built a couple of log cabins on my trapline. I think I am familiar with building a place from scratch and I know the joy of the wilderness because I guided river and backpack trips in what is now Gates of the Arctic National Park. I have lived your dream and can assure you it is worth it. Unfortunately, I can also assure you that bears, especially grizzlies will have no problem tearing into your shelter and spreading your gear across the countryside. I wish it were not so, but except for a miracle of God it will surely happen. I have had them tear the wall off a trapline cabin just to see what is inside. That being said, yours is a worthwhile quest though with many challenges, especially if you plan on wintering there. I wish you well and hope you continue to keep an accurate journal as I have for over 50 years. I am using them to help me as I write a book about my half century in Northern Alaska and plan to have it published this fall. Be safe and enjoy the ride!

      @@alaskatrac Thank you Dave, I'm envious of your life, I too wish one day I could live in or around the gates of the artic. I'm certain a bear has already torn my stuff to shreds, but that's okay. I halfway expected that to happen. Thank you for your time, and I would absolutely buy a copy of your book when you release it. I won't be wintering until I can get a proper cabin built. In the description of the video I give more information as I kind of suck at remembering to talk on camera. But again, thank you for watching and commenting, I'm very excited to read your book!

    My friend, the next time you buy a couple new loops of chain for that Husqvarna, buy a couple loops of 3/8, semi skip, full chisel chain. I'm coming from an old man who made his living cutting timber in Washington State, the best advice I could give you, would be to watch "buckin Billy Ray Smith's"how to sharpen chain. Pay close attention to the rakers and the gullet. Your life will be much easier my friend. You are living my dream. Good luck to you.

    Hello from Maine.
    I've been dropping trees for over 40 years. You did great, but I have one piece of advice. Before cutting the tree, spend one minute cutting all the brush and foot-tangle around the tree. Watching you hammer your wedges and at the same time you're fighting that brush having to swing your axe through it. It just makes life a little easier on you as well as safer in the long run.
    Hell, if I were you, I'd take your weed wacker/brush cutter and just trim around every tree you plan to drop.
    Good luck up there, be safe.

      I call this good advice. Certainly while alone. With an unstable tree and a running chainsaw you need scramble-away room! Trees are much bigger here way down south, but they can do weird and unexpected things while falling.

      More importantly, you need to clear a retreat path incase shit goes sideways. Always clear a path for safeties sake when felling all trees 🎄

    When making fire here in Alaska always remember the fire can get into the root system and travel through it.. signs of smoke coming up from locations away from burn area are a indicator...great to see your dousing and shoveling burn pit. save as much wood as you can for winter, reminds me of when i came here almost 40 years ago, grew up in Tucson , enjoy your journey..

    I would separate the brush and twigs from logs, roughly anything thicker 3 to 4 cut to a length about 30 inches, stack them at the edge of where you clearing in between two trees. Stack up around 3.5 feet. It would make a good fence and be storage for fire wood.

    I promise I will not be a jerk towards your videos. I taught living in the woods probably around the time you were born. My comment is simple. If you have a natural food source on your property, why destroy it ? Fruit , of all kind should be used and transplanted on the property.

    • @LifeonFishCreek
      @LifeonFishCreek  6 місяців тому +95

      Well, that's a very good question. My answer to your question is that all this area I was clearing is the area I plan to have my immediate "yard" give or take about 1 of the 7 acres I have available. That is reason number 1. Reason 2 is that the 2+ mile trail from the river to the creek has an absurd, nearly endless supply of berry bushes. If I'm not mistaken there are 6 different kinds. And my final reasoning for destroying the natural food supply in this specific area is that there are many more patches of these berries all over the place. There is virtually nobody else out there. So all I have to do is find the next patch.
      I really do appreciate your question, I hope you find my reasonings worthy. And of course, I appreciate your support.
      In my next video I will attempt to be better at explaining the things I'm doing and why I'm doing them. I'm still trying to be comfortable in front of the camera.

    i love the video, and how exciting and awesome to have this adventure before you! (Makes me wish i was 30 years younger so I could try it!) I admire your skill and work ethic, keep it up!
    Also, the sound of the creek and the fire actually put me to sleep (in a VERY good way, love it!)

    Beautiful spot and interesting video. I think the A frame was a good choice for a strong and sturdy initial shelter. What a paradise, here in NZ we dont really have access to such land although we can hunt deer, Elk and wild pigs - no Moose. I look forward to future videos, stay safe.
