In this episode I take some old used and emptied oxygen tanks and turn them into some Giant and great sounding wind chimes.

Love them! It sounds like a floating buoy on a calm day.
given their size, it does take a bit of a breeze to make them ring, so isn't a constant sound, more a very pleasant surprise sound. Thanks for the comments Black Rose, much appreciated.
@TryNewThings i wonder if you could hang smaller things up in the cylinder so it makes a nice gentle tingle with the occasional goueong from a stronger gust. Like a little personality almost in a way
Awesome job sir! They look and sound great!!!😊
Someone recommended using a wooden ball instead of a steel nut for a different sound. I still have a few tanks left, will try that on the next one. Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback, it’s very much appreciated.
You can tune them by cutting them a certain length.
Well I definitely wasn't expecting that. That's neat
Thanks JW!!
Roller blade, skateboard wheels also work good. And if you don't like the constant clang from wind, super easy to convert to a manual gong style. I think aluminum yanks sound better than steel, but that's just my opinion. Great upcycle projects!
I had heard the skateboard wheel suggestion elsewhere as well, do think that would be much nicer 'ring'. Thanks for taking the time to leave the comment, very much appreciate the feedback!
Beautiful sound👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
I could not agree more!!
Very cool, I was considering finding an old tank for this purpose and love what you've done. I've made a chime out of a 3" piece of old copper pipe. One thing that I did differently with the final product, as with some cylindrical bells, is use sound slots -- meaning you cut slots up the sides -- this can let it resonate better. I saw this when looking at other commercially produced bell chimes. My first iteration of my pipe chime did not have the slots and I thought it was a dull sound. Once I incorporated this design change, it sounds much better!
Great recommendations, I still have 5 tanks off in the corner, was going to make some more this winter, I’ll have to look into the slots!
Great job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Never seen anything like that. Different design from standard wind chime, but I imagine it would sound like bells if any other way. I presume shorter tanks change sound. Thanks for sharing a new thing.
I did one about 6-8” shorter, was a slightly different ring. Next round maybe I’ll try one about a foot shorter. It is a different sound however not dramatically different. Thanks for the feedback. Always welcome and appreciated.
@@TryNewThings if you used a heavy piece of wood that's rounded as the clanger, it would have a softer less tinny sound
Thank you for this excellent video. I learned some different techniques today. Carry On Sir!
Glad it was helpful!

Where in the world did you find old 02 tanks? I love this.
Believe it or not found them on Facebook Marketplace 😀. And they do sound awesome. Does take a little breeze to ring them. You can hear them in the background of some of my videos but especially during the intro to my Cowboy BBQ video. Thanks for the question!!
@@TryNewThings Thank you!!
They are flipping awesome!
I wonder is there any tonal variations if you cut the cylinders to different lengths? Cheers from Nfld :)
i cut one 6" shorter and it does sound only slightly different. Maybe another 6" shorter would be more noticeable.
Ive done this . Odd in ky as well . There more like bells than chimes but pretty cool none the less . If ya chop the top off making them a pipe then you can tune them very well .
I find they sound a bit like a railroad crossing if the wind times the repeat just right. How do you hang them when you cut the top off? I have 5 tanks left and despite by best efforts I just cant get the nozzles out of them, just cutting the tops off would get me around that.
If you don't mind, where were you able to purchase the empty oxygen tanks from ?
Found them on Facebook Marketplace. Paid almost nothing for them.
Thank you sir
is nobody gonna mention those stunningly beautiful jeeps he has there
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a nice comment… glad someone noticed the old Willys 🤣
Great project!
You going to give it a try?
No but I sent your video to a friend to get him to do one for me 😊
Very good idea. This winter when I’m shut in I think I’ll make a few more. Love the sound they make.
COOL!
I imagine a wooden ball, instead of a nut, would change the tone.
I have 5 more tanks to convert here someday… I’ll give the wooden ball a go. Thanks for the suggestion.
Cut them to different lengths for different tones. How about reusing the valves instead of the nuts. Cut the ends off and drill them out. Fun project but I'm nut so sure I want that dinging all hours of the night. Just enough cedar left for a blue bird house. This spring be sure and grow gourds to make martin houses. Just trying to keep you in future projects.
i may try the valves on the next one, good idea, and we were actually thinking gourds for this coming year. More to turn into decorations, but I would love to have more martins.
@@TryNewThings Gourd Martin houses would make a fun video. Do your research. Critical to place the hole under the taper of the gourd so water doesn't get in.
Cool
Soak tank in oxyclean and hot water. Stickers will fall off
They still make oxyclean? I guess they would, just have not remembered seeing any commercials since the Billy Mayes days. Thanks for the tip, I still have a few more to make some cold ugly day this winter, be a good indoor project to knock out.
Very romper room boring. Too much talking. Stop downloading.
