Someone obviously didn’t think to set off the smoke alarms in Brock’s gym.
That still annoys me to this day how the writers ether was too stupid to know the rules and how nature worked or didn't care just so that POS character could win with a trash Pokemon.
If only Soak existed in Gen 1. Like it clearly did in the anime.
God the anime is stupid...
@@valor1omega ash isn’t a POS character though
Yeah...
Pikachu's defenses in a nutshell:
"It's not very effective"
*Pikachu fainted*
How dare you roast my son 😡
thats why you need to keep double team as part of the moveset. with 2 or 3 double teams, pikachu is dodging 3 or 4 out of 5 attacks. it is basically like when pikachu used agility on raichu in the anime
I used every iron item I found on him too boast his defense

Man this brings back memories. Yellow was my first Pokemon game and at the time I didn't realise Mankey was an option to make Brock easy, so I ended up spending days raising my Pikachu into the 20s just to get through Brock only to realise I was way overpowered when I got to Misty.
You coulda also use Butterfree with confusion or Nidoran with double kick.
Butterfree with confusion was always my go to
Double kick nido was my go to. I'd evolve it to nidorino and beat Brock then when I got to misty I'd forget and evolve it to nidoking
I played yellow after a few hours of playing I realized red and blue was better also the sprites were better looking plus the rare 🍬
@@BarelyLegal23 Yeah I was not a smart child. At the time I didn't realise fighting was strong against rock, and completely didn't understand the physical/special mechanics.
I actually love that Yellow pushes you to catch more mons by guaranteeing your starter will suck against the first gym; only BW and LGPE follow that trend, and it's a great way to encourage diverse teambuilding. Annoying for solo challenges, but great from a design standpoint.
I forgot Mankey but it made me get a butterfry. Great against Brock. But I mean if you picked Charmander on red and blue it's actually harder than yellow with Pikachu
I always snagged myself a mankey and a ratatta.
Charmander is easier against Brock on a solo run, but if you mean how Red and Blue don't have as good anti-Brock options, I get what you mean. The Nidos don't learn double kick until super late, there is no Mankey, and Butterfree needs to be level 12 to get confusion for some reason.
@@rawbebaba Butterfry... Sounds delicious 😋
@@Hyperencrpted12345 Level 12 isn't too bad to get to, it's a grind I won't deny that. But probably the best solution in Blue and Red
Me as an 8-year-old trying to solo the game with Pikachu:
“WHY IS THIS SO HARD?!?”
when i was 6 i did not found it difficult, but i probably overleveled, i remember my pikachu being around 62 after i had my 6th badge
I wasn't ever a fan of Pikachu. I focused on getting something to replace it as soon as possible
@@tupacshakur5868 as a kid playing Pokémon Red I remember I had a Blastoise before I reach the Rock Tunnel lmao. But it was easier for me back then cuz I got lost plenty of times and I never left wild encounters 😂
@@penske_material same when I was a kid I grinded to level 20 before Brock cause I thought I had to just keep training on wild pokemon like the show
Glad i wasnt the only 8 year old having a midlife crisis at this crap
Yellow definitely wanted you to catch other Pokemon to fight Brock. West of Viridian City you could now catch a Mankey that learned Low Kick at LVL 9, or a Nidoran (M or F) that now learned Double Kick at LVL 12. Also Butterfree learned Confusion at 10 instead of 12. So yeah, they really punished you if you only wanted to use Pikachu.
Or you could do it like young dumb me Pikachu and pidgeotto
@@remydirt3158 This. My kid brain was too stubborn to catch others so I would grind for hours (only to have my GBA die and forget to save)

Scott: "I've decided to stop fighting dirty so I forget Double Team."
Me: "Wait, shouldn't he keep it at least until he's dealt with the Self-Destruct Hiker?"

"The worst starter ever."

Chikorita bodies that overgrown rat.

At least Chikorita evolves
(And at least it learns Poison Powder and Reflect)
Totodile all the way for gen 2 starters
Chikorita's base stats:
HP: 45
Attack: 49
Defense: 65
Sp. Atk: 49
Sp. Def: 65
Speed: 45
You could argue that this is worse than Pikachu, but Pikachu functions as an attacker and has barely any higher attack or special, and only really wins in the speed department. Chikorita is obviously meant to be a tank, and has a lot of moves that support it. I can't really see how Chikorita is worse, even if we don't factor in evolution
Scott, really liking the UI changes, especially the crit rate, move base power, and laying out gym pokes and moves.
Looks especially good on the TV
I agree, Scott has come a long way and I look forward to seeing him going in the future.

This time there is no plot armor to save Pikachu from Ground types
It can be taught Body Slam and Submission so it has those moves going for it. If only it weren't so frail though.
This was awesome! I remember when my uncle gave me pokemon yellow for christmas. He's not around anymore and I no longer have the game but I will never forget :)
Against Misty's Starmie, I'm kind of surprised you didn't point out that using Quick Attack would have guaranteed you the win on the first try.
I was about to say it's the priority move in that instance
Yeah, I’m really good at forgetting quick attack, both during the playing and scripting phase! I’ll try to remember it!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Would you say you're quick to forget Quick Attack?
@@FernandoRafaelNogueiraReis no but I would say that your slow, bro. Babooom.
Who else wanted to follow the anime so badly that they’d walk around in viridian forest until they’d finally encounter a pidgeotto? So that way you could catch it like ash does? Instead of catching a pidgy lol
Also I’d always catch caterpie and evolve it to butterfree, and then release it around the same place where ash does in the anime lol. And I’d try to be all sad about it too(same with pidgeot)
I DID!!!!! and trained butterfree too, but I do not remember nothing about a release mechanic on that game....🤔
Every time. It was like a law of my playthroughs.
It would be interesting to see how surfing Pikachu (the gimmick of that game) would change the series. It would be cool to see what level you could beat everything at in that scenario.
Also, you and Mah-Dry-Bread are totally different types of creators. You focus on consistency, strategy, and reproduction. He focuses on completion only, which many times requires lvl 100 for him. Your comparison is JRose if anyone, IMO.
Well nah you can only get surf Pikachu on yellow if you did something in N64 in in the photo game or maybe collisium
@@rawbebaba In Poke Colosseum if you do the Master Ball division with a Pikachu in your party, you will obtain a Pikachu with surf that can be transferred over to the other games.
@@VideoGamesRus100 ah yeah there it is, I know there are cheats which will allow you to get that Pikachu but I think it's kind of random which move gets replaced with surf and then I think he no longer follows you around if that's something you care about

@@hoaujudaiyubel yeah I've used the cheat before but thought it was over rated to be honest. I really like the ability to paralyze and double team deadly combo. Especially with badge boost glitch you just become way OP during the elite four.
Pokemon Yellow was my second Pokemon game, with Silver being the first. However, I got Silver through a Thrift Store, and it didn't have an instruction booklet. I also had no idea how RPGs worked at the time, so thanks to Yellow, I got a better idea on what I was doing/should be doing.
Something people miss a lot and I think is quite funny is that when the battle with oak and Pikachu scroll over, pikachu actually goes through oaks head making it transparent
ALRIGHT story time. I was going to post this on another video of yours but this one is perfect.
I was a 4th grader who had contracted pokemon fever. Getting a Pikachu starter was an 10 yo's dream. Obviously you can imagine my dismay when Brock straight up walled me. I thought i was a friggin genius when I found the route west of Viridian where you can catch a Mankey. Brock still thrashed me so I filled the rest of my team with pidgeys and sand attack Brock's pokemon till they were blind.
I also tried to evolve my OG pikachu by trading him to my blue version but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I have more memories but I'll bother you with those another time.
Yeah I tried trading him to evolve.... but then he wouldn't have followed me around
Sand-attack, the best attack
I believe there’s a glitch in gen 1 that if you modify your speed with agility and you are paralyzed it nullifies the speed drop from paralysis
I had no idea about this, even so many years later.
@@Endrance450 it puts you at 2x the speed
Hey Scott just dropping in to tell you that you are doing an amazing job. Seeing you evolve as a content creator, seeing your growth. It's great to see. Keep it up my guy. All you subscribers you have gotten up until now, and all the future ones you will receive, are all well deserved.
I hope you continue to keep the videos on the longer side. And I SINCERELY hope you don't rest on your laurels and let your growth stall out and decline.
I watch everything you have put out, and just love your content. Keep it going man, you are doing amazing.
For that first attempt at Misty the real reason you lost is simply that you chose to go for another Thundershock over Quick Attack when Starmie was in red health. Unnecessary reset.
PS: If you're suffering from burnout I think you should really consider taking a break or slowing down. Don't overdo it man.
I have slowed down. Less than half the hours I used to be putting in. I’m taking time to care for myself!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon That's great news!

Good to hear Scott.
You shouldn't push yourself too hard, that's how burn outs happen.
Besides that means you can spend more time with your girlfriend.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Have you every thought about recording a nuzlocke run? Could just be a straight Lets play and people would be all over it!
Pikachu in Yellow: “I’m too weak!”
Pikachu in Let’s Go: “Unlimited Power!”
Poor Gen 1 Pikachu, its made of glass. Hold items don't exist yet so has no access to either Light Ball or Eviolite to get a boost to its stats.
Various gyms are probably going to give it a hard time.
Feels like a run where the hiker in Rock Tunnel with the self-destructing pokemon could be a real issue.
Also no iron tail to use as a copout to rock types
And that's why my friend would just throw Pikachu into storage... just kidding... not being able to use the Thunderstone is why.
Pikachu's defenses are about as close to a paper bag and Karate Chop can almost one hit KO it since it always criticals on Mankey or Primeape or any Pokemon that uses Slash.
I don’t like my son getting slander
Eviolite probably wouldn't work for some reason
You're right when you said overcoming a tough in game challenge creates a bond, Furret's been my long time favorite because of how it headbutted Claire's dragons to death while paralyzed back when I was a kid.
Furret was definitely clutch, that and linoon were always two of my favorite rodents lol they could learn every move and they have good speed and special stats.
@@MrMutou those are mustilids not rodents.
I used Nidoking and Primape in a FireRed run recently and they where great. The only downside is that there Lv up move sets are shallow, but that’s everything in Gen 3.
I love how your videos have changed over time. This is another good one, which definitely points out how frustratingly bad Pikachu really is on its own. Also, great that you chose not to spam double team throughout the run and kept things interesting.
Very nice run, Scotty! Kudos for your persistence and patience in this run with that electric mouse that is the starter creature of _Pokémon Yellow_ . I, specially, liked very much these quotes of yours, in this video:
12:40 - “I survive with 1/4 health and finish the (big electric) MOUSE off on the second turn.”
15:32 - “Arbok hits a massive critical hit with “Bite” and paralyzes me with “Glare”. (…). Arbok connects again, taking me down to fourteen hit points, but my “Thunderbolt” zaps the SNAKE and I’m safe.”
23:43 - “On the fourth turn I got my second hit in and the CAT faints.”
25:11 - “However, Pikachu has so much working against it in _Yellow_ (this video is proving that), and, quite honestly, every time I’ve played _Yellow_ , I just try to ditch the little ELECTRIC MOUSE as quickly as I can.”
27:21 - “Mimic “Dig”; use it against both the ROCK SNAKES (…).”
34:01 - “(…) but we still love you, Pikachu. You are an adorable YELLOW MOUSE, after all.”
Loved those quotes, Scotty! Thank you for having made my day, always calling Pokémon in that natural way that makes me pretty happy!

@@Voldrim359 my son still good come on
I kept my pikachu throughout the game and I f*ing loved every second with it.
If it wasn't effective I used it anyway.
The only time I didn't was when Pokémon where immune or basically immune to it.
Fun fact: Brock was even harder for me than it should have been because I literally thought losing a Pokémon in a fight meant the death to it and since I definitely didn't want to lose my adorable little friend, I "had to" shut off the Gameboy before or after fainting.
The fact that Pikachu's sprite didn't appear after you fainted until you moved kinda confirmed my darkest fears.
Since every other fight until Brock was child's play I actually only learned the truth by accident when a cat of ours distracted me for a bit and I accidentally moved my character, Pikachu appeared and I felt nauseous and elated at the same time.
You guys definitely don't want to know how often I had tried to beat Brock with Pikachu and underleveled bugs and Nidoran at that point.
thats so so cute. I fell in love srsly
I always loved Pikachu. It was my first starter, I had an immediate connection with it and loved being able to talk to it. However, I have no clue how I managed to get past Brock. Silly child me also thought Pikachu was a really good Pokemon, hah! Still love it, though 😄
I mean double team and thunder wave with return and thunder makes Pikachu the best all time starter Pokemon. Especially if you know how to train up his speed and special
Shoot no return in gen 1 just stick with body slam even though brick break may be a better option because its sooooo effective against rock ice and normal and breaks barriers. I still like body slam though because 30 percent chance to cause par.

gold version, the year 2000, i defeated morty's last haunter with my level 10ish pidgey
i was 7, i only ever leveled my starter pokemon but go figure, i had picked that grass POS and was having real trouble overall. pidgey was able to sand attack that haunter and gust him to death, leveling like 10 times and becoming pidgeotto. i ended up making that my new "starter", as i had no concept of a balanced team, and ended up soloing the elite 4 with a level 80ish pidgeot :)
great video man. you really did a lovely job recounting what it was like to play this as a child.
OMG I love that story! Such a buff pidgeot.
The Pinky and the Brain theme lives rent-free in my head 24/7 ngl and I'm glad someone else finally knows what I sometimes fear is a fever dream
As a kid I got yellow, and ditched Pikachu pretty fast. A friend got stuck on the Oak parcel delivery. When I showed him what to do, his Pikachu was lvl 31. I still laugh to this day thinking about a 7 year old grinding his Pikachu on pidgy's and rats.
Pikachu was and still is trash.
I used blue to get Beedrill for Pokemon yellow so my team was Butterfree(my psy pokemon) Beedrill, Haunter(I know I could have gotten Gengar but I think haunter is cooler looking), Nidoqueen, Meowth (this Pokemon should have been the mascot), and Vaporion.
My team I felt was well rounded.
Never lost to the E4 with my team.
Red/Blue Butterfree became my favorite, Yellow reinforced that.
To this day no matter what game I play Butterfree, Beedrill, haunter, and Nidoqueen are the backbone of my team.
All because of red/blue and most definitely because of yellow.
I feel like it's easier to just accept a weakness and not really question how to get around it when it's your only real weakness. This might be what trips you up with Electric types, since being your only really bad matchup it's natural to assume you won't get a decent counterplay for it.
Vaporeon: *has base 130 hp and 110 special*
Scott: "yeah a pikachu will one-shot it"
Every time Pikachu faints...
Scott: don't worry Pikachu, just prepare for tomorrow night
Pikachu: Jeez Scott, what are we going to do tomorrow night?
Scott: the same thing we do every night Pikachu; TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD
Just a little tip if you want to make your runs a tiny bit faster: if you decide to train on the trainers in Blaine's gym, you can skip the questions. Just talk to them and it'll start everything right away. A few less text boxes and no walking animation, speeding this up a few seconds each trainer. Of course, if you want to skip the fights, just do the questions. Even that trick question.
Not in yellow. Only red and blue
That only works in Red/Blue.
Just another reason that red/blue is superior :)

2:52 I've found out on my recent playthrough of Yellow just how helpful Double Team is for Pikachu. In fact, the moveset I've given him during the adventure is Thunderbolt, Mega Punch, Double Team, and Pay Day.
Back in the past when I was a stupid kid, Pikachu's moveset was Thundershock, Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, and Thunder. It seemed like a good idea at the time. XD
You and the comment above are two peas in a pod.
I think Slowpoke was a word before Pokemon was.
Pikachu looking at the clefairy could be a reference to the scrapped "Pokémon Pink" found in the gigaleak
To complement this, there needs to be a Pokemon Yellow Raichu solo speed run.
Persian vs Raichu! Cat vs mouse!
Yeah. Lol
The Pikachu in Yellow Version actually learned some moves at an earlier level than it's Red and Blue counterparts. That's actually what made it so competitive. And Red's Pikachu in GSC was a beast.
Edit: I forgot to mention, if you trade the Pikachu from Yellow to any Gen 2 game, it has a 100% chance to be holding a light ball.
It got Thunderbolt by Level up which for some reason no other Electric types got.
@@ShiningJudgment666 it's because they wanted the starter to shine
@@stellarsub-orbital9922 Yet by the time it has, it's at the point in the game where it really falls behind. Getting the other starters for free helps the player a lot as far as team-building goes but there's unfortunately better Electric types than Pikachu in Yellow even if you do account for a level 26 Thunderbolt considering you get the TM for it anyway. Still, early level-up Thunderbolt can get you past Misty if you grind up for it.
I completely agree, but by the time you reach Voltorb and Magnemite Pikachu is already leaps and bounds ahead. He has way more time invested. That being said, I typically trade him out for Jolteon ASAP. Then I add the three starters, Lapras, and a toss up between Nidoking, Aerodactyl, and Snorlax. Charizard learns fly in Yellow version so I don't really mess with the birds.

I played this game at age 6, and I’m 29 now. Got the Pikachu gameboy for Christmas and fell in love. I had rented yellow and my grandmother saw the love and effort put into it, and she found out about this game/gameboy and started my real love. Mankey being there caused my love for Primeape. I didn’t know much about balanced teams and all that. I’ve got tons of other Pokémon I love for my game but Primeape is my favorite, and then Nidoking helped me carry through most of the game because I had no clue about balance like I said lol and they were levels above everything else and barley used anyone else

When I got Yellow Edition, I always thought you were supposed to be Ash and not Red. So getting and training a Butterfree seemed to be common sense, and with Confusion, Brock was never a problem. From that point on, the game was pretty simple.
Fan Fact, the Prima Guide book says you are Ash and rival is Gary.
It was supposed to be based on the anime. At least at the start. Beyond Surge, it sort of disconnects from that and goes sort of in line with Red, Blue and Green.
This is it, Pikachu, the worst starter ever, its stats are so bad i don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Not only does it get stonewalled by Brock, due to its frailty, you might actually struggle a bit with match-ups you wouldn't with actual good electric types.
Instead of giving you a better pikachu, you get a worse one, since its doesn't even evolve.
The mental image of Pikachu seismic tossing a rhydon is hilarious. This 2' mouse is so buff it can throw a rhino into the air xD

Burnout is no joke, I'm amazed you managed to put out as much as you did so far. From what I gathered, you have improved your commentary, video editing, presentation, narration by such a huge amount in a short time - but this also comes at the cost of severely increased production effort I bet
Best of luck ,and thank you for your pleasant videos \o/
Huge effort. It’s taken a toll and I didn’t notice it soon enough. But Shawn is helping so much! Releases will continue and I can get some rest while that happens :)
And you are killing it with detail! Love the amount of detail on the side screen. If it's there you might as well make use of it. You definitely put the most work into your videos!
I never realized that the game tried so hard to make you struggle with pikachu. Yellow was my first version and is one of my favourites till this day(I am actually in the age group whose first games are usually gen4/5 but I got lucky I guess)
Try this set on Pikachu: Thunderbolt/Thunder, Thunder Wave, Quick Attack, Mega Punch. You won't be able to do much against the many rock types on your way but Pika can still do some damadge and annoy your opponents with the holy paralysis.
If youre curious: the team on my last yellow run was Pika, Ratticate, Nidoking, Venomoth, Vap and Kangashkan. Not the strongest team but it went well :)
Pokemon yellow was my first pokemon game because my mum wouldn't allow me to have the other, it took me that long to guilt her into buying my it. I love this game and it will always be my favorite. Having Pikachu follow you was unbelievable
By the the time I played this, I had already played red and blue so much, so I kind of just plowed through it without really enjoying much of the differences other than the Pikachu sprite. Its such a shame cause I could have enjoyed it a lot more. It's super cool listening to your own reflections as you go through these videos.

You becoming attached to Butterfree for getting you past Brock is the same as how I got really attached to Sableye when I used him to beat Brawly when I got stuck at Dewford in Sapphire as a kid. It took me EMBARRASSINGLY long to beat him, then I discovered the joys of using a Pokémon that none of Brawly’s Pokémon could hit.
OMG Brawly at Dewford got me too. I can see how Sableye would have really helped.

This meant that I had to solo Brock with pikachu before being able to grind up the magikarp you but at Mt. Moon. I also used double team and was surprised that I could beat Brock quite easily.
Other than that monotype run I always kept pikachu on my team. It always did quite well back then, but that was obviously because I had an entire team supporting it.
Speaking of Yellow as a child, when I was a child my brother and I did NOT have the games in english, I got Yellow and my brother got Green, our auntie in Japan had gotten them for us along with a purple GBA colour for me and my brother had a light blue one. So imagine the trouble navigating the game not knowing what anything was saying or doing. The fact we did in fact clear the game is kinda testament to the good design of pokemon that even literally being unable to read it, we could eventually sus everything out. BUT, you can imagine how hard this made Brock for me.
Been sick with Covid this week, and been binging your stuff. Keep up the good work dude! I love Yellow too
The idea of pre-literate you just brute-forcing your way though Pokémon is a testament to how as we get older, in some ways we become far more patient, but in others we become almost infinitely less so. To wit:
*Young Child:* I have no idea what I'm doing and can barely read, but I'll just keep trying everything forever until I make progress.
*Child:* I can read now, but I'm still just sort of stumbling around trying different things. The anticipation of getting further and the joy I feel when it finally happens is what makes this worthwhile.
*Adolescent:* I clearly understand my objectives, but carrying them out is pretty tedious. However, I'll bare with it because I just want to win.
*Teen:* I've started making hand-drawn maps on grid paper, because these dungeons are so annoying that I figure this will save time in the long run.
*Adult:* What, are you kidding me? Nah, fuck it. I don't have time for this bullshit.
If a pokemon is paralyzed and uses agility, it negates the paralysis speed drop. There were some battles you could use this glitch
Good point!
Yellow was my first Pokemon game! The big round Pikachu back sprite is so cute and nostalgic 😄
*Jrose laughing in the background as it turns out pikachu is actually great*
We should've been able to teach Pikachu Surf without having to:
connect the game with Pokémon stadium, beating through it once, beating Premium Cup until Masterball Cup again in Round 2, using only your own Pokémon in the Masterball Cup (you face pokemon at Level 100) and sacrificing a Pokémon spot in the finals to use your frail Pikachu and win.
All this so your Pikachu learns Surf.
So excited, your uploads are always one of the highlights of my week!
I think what is the BIGGEST slap in the face to yellow players is if you want to complete your dex, to get raichu in your dex, you have one of two options, if we discount glitches. A: Have someone trade you a raichu, just to get the dex page, on top of the other nessicary trades. Or B: Trade your starter pikachu over to red or blue, evolve it THERE, then trade it back. Pokemon Red/Blue have no check for if the pikachu is from yellow or not, so you can evolve him THERE, then trade him back as the evolution gamefreak wrongly banned from being naturally obtained any other way.
Why you gotta do my boy this way, Yellow?
I can't believe I actually wanted you for Christmas...
It's wild to hear you mention *exactly* every encounter I had problems with as a kid lol
I couldn't read when I played this game back in 98 lmao. You reminded me of that when you announced the same haha thanks for the awesome video.
Yeah, I agree, Pikachu is definitely the worst among all Gen 1 Starters. I still own this game, and Brock still brings haunting memories from childhood. Unless you cheat, it won't be easy. It's a dang shame, because any real Gen 1 fan knows we were supposed to have EEVEE as the Starter. It took 20 years for Nintendo and Game Freak to finally make up for that in Let's Go Eevee...
And yes, as a kid, I actually did try to go solo with Pikachu. Worst mistake ever, although I did beat everyone once at...Level 100.
Slowpoke was slang my mum used whenever I didn't do anything fast enough for her liking, even before pokemon existed, so I always assumed that was where it came from for the last all of my years
You mentioned cubone to much in this to not give him a fighting chance in the rankings !! Love the vid as usual Scott ! I look forward to your post every week =D
"Lance is a flying type master" OOF. I think you made Lance go cry in the corner for saying that xD
Tbf thats the only type his pokemon have in common.
I remember getting this game at like 4 or 5 years old. I couldn’t read too well and didn’t pay attention to the whole “you can catch other Pokémon” thing so I thought because pikachu was the cover art pokemon I thought I had to solo the game with it… it wasn’t until I beat the 8th gym when my brother taught me how to catch other Pokémon.
Yellow being my first pokemon game and me being absolutely obsessed with this game I have done this playthrough many a time. You already know obvi, but this is gonna be brutal. I don't even think quick attack can beat Brock
Double team. Nevermind
Scott: No TM32 before level 100
Also Scott: Time for six Double Teams
Scott you are such a silly person and that is why I’m subbed to you. We’ve been playing Pokémon for basically the same amount of time (I got Pokémon blue on the release date when I was 7) but I never played with just one poke and always could read everything. I love your approach and stories. It makes me regret always playing this game “the way I was supposed to” instead of my own way. I followed all “the rules” and now I watch people play who break them. Sub for life my friend
We only had Yellow Edition when I was a kid. I hated having to make a Butterfree on each run. Training it to lvl 10 was such a drag even when you played on N64 with high speed mode.
Butterfree is pretty good early-game and learning Sleep Powder helps a lot since Gen 1 sleep is broken as and is helpful for catching Pokemon.
12:00 To make up for Pikachu's low defense, teach it DOUBLE TEAM over SLAM, that really helped my Pikachu defeat Surge's Raichu, Mega Kick and Thunderbolt always missed. Think like Ash did in the Pokemon anime did against Lt. Surge and don't worry about the stats that make Pikachu weak, focus on what makes it strong and build up on it.
I did this run a while back and had a blast! I stuck with doubleteam until the very end, which makes it not as consistent, but allowed an elite 4 finish at level 60! Since it is yellow, having Pikachu following me in the overwold as early as 1999 and it not getting some sort of rule bending gimmic (light ball, z-move, gigantamax), make this run super nostalgic for me. Also, there are a ton of special reactions of Pikachu and discovering them was really fun :)
Gamefreak made this version just like : "You kids want to be like Ash ? You love Pikachu ? Try this yellow version and become Ash with Pikachu !"
Then after the kids get pissed with difficulties, it's like they said : "See now kids, Ash & Pikachu svcks, right ? Now just stick to awesome Red with Fire/Water/Plant starter kids !"
Charmander is WORSE.
"But you can't choose charmander on Y."
Thanks GOD!
The Pokémon yellow sprites are so good, I love Raichu’s
They are!
I love the editor, even if he does spell his name wrong!
Hahaha
It's funny Pikachu is honestly the perfect starter in terms of game balance because it forces the player to think strategically about how to get around early weaknesses. But then Yellow version throws you every starter and after Celadon Pikachu is free to basically
one hit most if not all of the remaining gym leaders until Blaine and Giovanni. So Yellow is simultaneously one of the most balanced and broken Pokémon experiences. (Though in your particular case the scales of imbalance dip in the game's favor)
Vaporeon surviving Thunderbolt with half HP is just about right :D. He might be the objectively ugliest eeveelution so far, but he's one of the best workhorses for any (normal, not challenge speedrun :D ) playthrough. High special defense makes him a solid wall capable of tanking even super effective special attacks, access to acid armor can beef up his physical defense even higher than his special defense. I get him as a surf slave for almost every pokemon game, as Vaporeon (especially with Leftovers and Acid Armor) is really durable and versatile - heck it learns Baton Pass and at least 3 different set up moves to pass to his teammates (Work Up, Acid Armor, Calm Mind), not to mention he's probably the eeveelution with the largest type coverage in the game if you don't like baton passing (learns Water, Ice, Ghost, Ground, Steel... in some games even Mimic, the ultimate troll move).
I remember Pikachu being my main in Yellow, I'm no speedrunner, so killed everything in sight and he did fine. He even tanked the four legendaries enough to capture them.
