As a fan of the game who also is realistic about its limitations, I consider this to be a very fair review. "Play to Earn" is a very apt description of the model. I would point out that you can buy one month of VIP for $15, and then cancel and become a Premium tier member. Premium folks have more character slots, shared storage (I think) and auction house slots, as well as a couple of other benefits versus F2P accounts. Additionally - and this is the really important bit! - any characters you create and log in with during your VIP month will retain their expanded inventory slots (75 instead of 45) and Swift Travel access that F2P and Premium folks otherwise do not get. It is a huge QOL improvement for a fairly small amount of cash in the long run.
Holy potatoes that’s a really neat reward given to premium players. The inventory was definitely a headache that seems to be easily circumnavigated that way. Thanks for checking out the video btw!
@@VagrantVideos A couple of summers ago, I went through a few different classic MMOs to relive some nostalgia. Overall I came to realize something that you seem to have, as well. These legacy games are much better off if they get acquired by some holding companies versus others. I'm very glad that LOTRO did not become another G*****o dumpster fire.
Issue is that it aint as classic as its used to be, as it used to have: - deeds beingneven more unique - specs being so unique that they were reasonably not called specs - difficulty was complete different, aka. instead of "kill x boars" it felt like group dark souls.
If u grew up playing legend of dragoon or acorina of time or Any other adventure type games or if ur someone who enjoys reading and gaming lotro will hit the spot
I would recommend avoiding this until they implement UI scaling. The games been out for 15 years and you still can’t scale the UI. So if you want to play at anything higher than 1080p you won’t be able to see any of the UI.
You can scale the UI, on fact you can individually scale each ui element independently and move them wherever you want...it's been that way for at least 7 years, when I first played it, and possibly longer than that. The scaling sliders are in the UI section of the settings menu (exactly where you'd expect them so don't know how you missed that) and you can unlock the elements to reposition them with shift+#
@@unholyxeras8182 show me how to scale your bags and your item icons in your bags and your character sheet and your equipment icons in your character sheet.
@@AFpaleoConI'll admit I use a plugin to manage my bag so I'm not sure what the default bag situation is with scaling but I could have sworn I saw a slider for that. I'm not at my pc at this exact moment though so I'll have to get back to you on that one haha
Hey I wanted to say if u havnt alrdy put it on your list, you should check out Ravendawn, it's just finishing up it's open beta part 1 with a part 2 TBA. Neways thanks again for covering niche and unknown mmos, it's how I found brokenranks, although pretty dead at this point, I have hope when it gets a steam release fresh start server, cheers!
To be fair. This no such thing as Pay2Win in lotro bc there is nothing special to "win". Additional Stats boost from the shop for examples are basically useless and not worth mentioning at all. You could at least argue that its "pay2skip the grind" and even though there are no big benefits to it besides u wont be able to get best in slot items by paying real money. By loot boxes u probalby have the chance to get a pre bis item wich is - at the current patch - also useless bc there are other ways to optain good items with a fun and engaging way to di so due to the delving system. Also cosmetics shouldnt be bought from the shop bc you can get all of these by playjng the game too...
I’m talking arenas or open world pvp. The dueling thing I just didn’t mention, but overall traditional pvp is not in the game. Thematically it wouldn’t make sense though, like why would the last hope for middle earth be killing each other in battle?
I quit LotR online and went to DDO(Dungeons and Dragons Online), easily the best decision of my life. DDO is smaller of a game, in terms of "Open" world. But DDO gives you limitless freedoms and you can play with your friends/family immediately. When me and my wife tried LotR we were years away from each other, I mean we were on the other sides of the world. With DDO's new lag fix coming out I will find myself spending at least another 500+ hours to 1k+ hours in DDO rather than going back to LotR online. I hope this makes sense to a lot of people, I hope you make a video of DDO after the lag fix. Awesome videos as always! I think LotR improved a lot over the years. I had a 100 ranger back in the day but idk, never liked a lot about the game. Just sharing my expereince of switching from LotR to DDO haha.
You literally have to play for just 1-2 hours to get to each other in the quest storyline leading to Bree-town. Also you could just run or make a character with the same race or starting area 🤦♂️
Got about 1000h played time. The world, story, music and lore are the best parts of the game. Community very nice as well. Hopefully SSG doesn't totally ruin the original lore but it seems to be going into a worse direction (looking at the upcoming patch especially)
@@VagrantVideos It might be good. Not happy about the new "customization" options for humans though... Devs focusing on creating bearded women with orcish features when they should be fixing the lag
I 100% agree. I was thinking about coming back but once I found out about the woke BS they are introducing I decided against it. First Amazon ruins LOTR and now this. Many other great mmorpg's to play.
@@gamergrandpa1126 So, having all options to make any character you want is woke. The only woke is in your imagination. Christ, are elves, dwarves, etc. real? Stop being a snowflake where there's no need to be.
I think it’s a fun experience. Very little pay walls, really the only free to play restriction that is a bit annoying is inventory space. You can earn literally everything else.
I don't get this bad habit about saying the LOTRO store is a P2W. Something is P2W when it offers an unfair advantage over another player; no matters what item you check in the Store, they don't fit this definition. No, mixing the Store with MPvP mode is a pretty bad argument 'cos MPvP was created totally unbalanced since minute 0, "thanks" to people like Sapience (Developer in Turbine times). And no, SSG can't build it from scratch, 'cos the game engine has its limitations. So.... no, LOTRO isn't a P2W. You don't need what the store offers to play and enjoy the game.
Pay to win is just the default term. Pay to skip is probably a better description but like I said, you can earn everything in the cash shop if you are willing to play enough.
@@VagrantVideos That's a more accurate term. However, and probably you noticed it, whenever a new player asks about the Gift of Valar in the chat, veterans always reply this: "If you're a newbie, don't use it; you won't learn to play the class, you'll miss a lot of content and you'll get bored and frustrated. The Gift is just for alt characters from players who already have experience and making extra chars in the same server, or another one."
It's the most boring freaking mmo I've ever played with lazy sections torn straight out the books and movies ....nothing feels original ...it's just boring...it Bores me to death.... this is my own personal opinion.
Rofl, seriously? Did you get paid to make this video? Have you ever played LOTRO? Jesus H C, the game is a disgrace to LOTR, combat is a yawner, jsnky, slow, over currency, clunky inventory, horrid vendor hud…I gotta stop. You sure you weren’t paid for this video? I bet Aragorn puked when he witnessed the LOTRO store….
Absolutely not. LOTRO is among the very worst WoW clones on the market. It started out decent back in 2007, but when Warner Brothers bought the rights and the game went free-to-play, all the WoW rejects jumped on board and ran off the vast majority of the founders and Tolkien fans. Since then, the server hardware has deteriorated to the point where they cannot even handle a handful of simultaneous logins, and frequent, repetitive 45-second lag spikes dominate most players' gaming experience. Leveling up is ridiculously easy, while endgame content is ridiculously difficult. Player crafting and in game economy have been non-existent and irrelevant for years, and the skeleton crew who maintain and "develop" the game (Standing Stone Games) are uniformly terrible at their jobs, and don't even try to mask their contempt for LOTRO players. The big controversy right now is the addition of bearded females, which has pitted progressives against bigots in a debate that is rapidly escalating to the tipping point in which both sides are pushing political agendas while attempting to gaslight others (and perhaps themselves, also) into accepting their talking points are not political. The content reached Mordor years ago, and that's when they should have put this terribad game out of its misery. Watching paint dry is a more satisfying gaming experience.
Who did you wrong in your life to give such hatred just for a game? LOTRO is one of the best MMOs out there, and it still gives a nice revenue with thousands of players. So you can take your hatred and shove it in your place where the sun never shines...
Do you play Lord of the Rings online?

I'm very glad that LOTRO did not become another G*****o dumpster fire.
the best f2p game out there, outside of private servers of course
100%
they gave out all the expansions a while ago and i got em might have to download it again and give it a try
One Game to rule them all
Issue is that it aint as classic as its used to be, as it used to have:
- deeds beingneven more unique
- specs being so unique that they were reasonably not called specs
- difficulty was complete different, aka. instead of "kill x boars" it felt like group dark souls.
If u grew up playing legend of dragoon or acorina of time or
Any other adventure type games or if ur someone who enjoys reading and gaming lotro will hit the spot
Great video man
I would recommend avoiding this until they implement UI scaling. The games been out for 15 years and you still can’t scale the UI. So if you want to play at anything higher than 1080p you won’t be able to see any of the UI.
It’s funny, for how long 4k has been a thing a ton of computer applications don’t scale properly.
It's kinda like if tibia and archeage had a baby, more of a BR population but I've bene enjoying it. Neways thanks again for covering niche and unknown mmos, it's how I found brokenranks, although pretty dead at this point, I have hope when it gets a steam release fresh start server, cheers!
Hey! Appreciate the support! Currently my next video project is Last Epoch but I’ll try to keep Ravendawn in mind. Is it 2D?
@@VagrantVideos Art style is 2D but not like maple story, it's isometric so more like diablo in 2D graphics
The group finder is pretty bad, just search for a group in the world chat
You can pvp players normally... You just walk up to them and challenge them to a duel
I’m talking arenas or open world pvp. The dueling thing I just didn’t mention, but overall traditional pvp is not in the game. Thematically it wouldn’t make sense though, like why would the last hope for middle earth be killing each other in battle?
@@VagrantVideos Thematically or not I don't think the game was made to support pvp. Class imbalances etc.
it’s a pretty old game but i’m looking to get into mmos, should i play this? can i find people to actively play with?
The game had quite a lot of players
LOL that Thriller bit.
lets talk about how long it takes to download and install the game
What you mean? Only took me about 20 mins or so but I have decent internet.
Is this game worth playing for a newbie considering the people playing for 18 years.
I was a newbie when I started playing for the video and I felt right at home as an mmo player.
@@VagrantVideos Thank you I'll give it a shot.
@@Ironclad6661 so how is that shot going so far?
Nice video ❤
LOTRO feels a lot like a more casual theme park mmo while DDO feels like the more hardcore version. Difficulty is night and day between the two games.
@@VagrantVideos right! Looking forward to more mmo reviews!
@@TheWayManREAL Last Epoch is next up depending on if I can get 30-50 hours into it within the next week lol.
You literally have to play for just 1-2 hours to get to each other in the quest storyline leading to Bree-town. Also you could just run or make a character with the same race or starting area 🤦♂️
The $$$$ to play this game is nuts
Got about 1000h played time. The world, story, music and lore are the best parts of the game. Community very nice as well. Hopefully SSG doesn't totally ruin the original lore but it seems to be going into a worse direction (looking at the upcoming patch especially)
New class isn’t hype?
@@VagrantVideos It might be good. Not happy about the new "customization" options for humans though... Devs focusing on creating bearded women with orcish features when they should be fixing the lag
@@59Lemony the lag during my play through was terrible
I 100% agree. I was thinking about coming back but once I found out about the woke BS they are introducing I decided against it. First Amazon ruins LOTR and now this. Many other great mmorpg's to play.
@@gamergrandpa1126 So, having all options to make any character you want is woke. The only woke is in your imagination. Christ, are elves, dwarves, etc. real? Stop being a snowflake where there's no need to be.
“Nurgolas” lmao
Best name generated 100%
Is it worth investing time in this game for free are there pay walls?
I think it’s a fun experience.
Very little pay walls, really the only free to play restriction that is a bit annoying is inventory space. You can earn literally everything else.
How the hell do you're graphics look like that please help?
From what I remember there is a texture pack you have to download in the options menu or something like that.
He created Thriller....Thriller...
Is this like eso
No, combat is tab target.
Style world of Warcraft!!!
Style?
@@VagrantVideos I mistyped... this game is similar wow!!
next archeage pls
pls
I did archeage a long time ago.
thank you babby
Eyyyy
HECK Y#AH
THRILLA
It's the most boring freaking mmo I've ever played with lazy sections torn straight out the books and movies ....nothing feels original ...it's just boring...it Bores me to death.... this is my own personal opinion.
😴
Rofl, seriously? Did you get paid to make this video?
Have you ever played LOTRO?
Jesus H C, the game is a disgrace to LOTR, combat is a yawner, jsnky, slow, over currency, clunky inventory, horrid vendor hud…I gotta stop.
You sure you weren’t paid for this video?
I bet Aragorn puked when he witnessed the LOTRO store….
unfair review lol. dont play the game guys sounds like he was paid.
Paid by who? 😂
I strongly disagree. But that is ok, you can play different games and I will keep playing Lotro :).
so much better than World of Warcraft
Grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, .....................................
That's MMOs in a nutshell 😂
So you mean it's an MMO?
