Thanks for watching. Cheers
You youngsters don't know how lucky you are to have teachers like this for free on You tube.Been playing since the 60s and you would have to take private lessons to be taught licks like this.
You are an amazing teacher. I'm sixty nine and started guitar three years ago. I'm hoping to get this iconic solo down before the bucket gets kicked 😁. Thank you for your very valuable lesson (s)!
I'm seventy five and still not done it !
HI, I am sixty four , but I started playing guitar when I was fifteen , so fifty years ago ! and I'm learning this solo for the first time, because previously I was not courageous enough to try alone . Thank you very much for your help !
O hell , guess i should sound off , im 67 in August n id forget all about it but my family has to make it a thang u know . Lol , been playin since 6th grade . Learned this when it hit the radio but always a few spots thts just not rt . Retired so im ironing out the wrinkles . Hav a good day gentlemen .
That was 2 years ago. How's it going?
Im 19🏴☠️
I’m 76, been playing off and on since my 20’s, but only seriously for about 5+ years. My favorite song, been trying to learn it for 6 months. Your lesson is the best. Thank you so much.
I'm only 3 minutes in the video, and I can already see that this video is one of the beat guitar tutorials I have ever seen!
When I started playing in 1990, guitar lessons were 15$ an hr. They're likely more than twice that now. The best thing about UA-cam and free lessons is you can continue to revisit the lesson over and over again.
I really value that you don't just explain the solo but also show the relation of the licks with the underlying Chords
Helps a lot with composing my own solos 👍
You are the best guitar teacher on line. Not only have you taught me this piece, but also several other advanced pieces, including some of the most difficult Eagles songs.
What a tremendous guitarist you are buddy, your ability to break down and teach complex songs in such an accessible way makes them much less daunting than they’d otherwise be. Bravo maestro!
One little thing I'd add to this lesson: at 2:47, instead of barring the 12th fret E and A, play the harmonics instead. You can hear the harmonics ring out in the original. Other than that, thanks for this incredibly accurate lesson. I learned to play Sultans about a month ago, but I'll just have to start over since you've captured so many nuances I missed out on myself when learning the solos.
You're right. Makes it easier too.
The chunk chunk lick which then leads into the 12:45 blues lick are BY FAR the most influential and downright fucking gorgeous and beautifully aggressive guitar licks i've heard in all my years listening to Marks song. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you for this.
You know all the chords!
One of the best and perfect tutorial of this classic.
Thank you very much for the upload.
Comfortably....Sultans....Just amazing solos that NEVER get old!
Awesome lesson Andy, I tried to learn this 30 years ago using a cassette tape from note to note music. Where you shine is you are teaching guitar, and not just the song. So many great examples on how the chords and scales overlay the lic. Anyone who learns from this lesson will be so much better at understanding this instrument
As always, technically accurate and easy to follow. I guess it is time to throw the pick in on the floor and get it right
I'm so happy that you do this. I'm 14 and love this. You are the best teacher ever for guitar. Keep on rocking.
It's "like," a master class??
This IS a master class!
That's si fantastic, I'm 64 and playing guitar most of my life without proper lessons or theory but seems I've done pretty good. I just stumbled on your lessons for the first time. Excellent playing and love your method of teaching.
Imparting your music talent to rest of the world in a sincere way, makes you a class apart. Your in-depth knowledge about music theories (major & minor pentatonics etc..) is awesome. Even if the whole world is shut down, I pray that your "shut up & play" continue as long as you are alive. With your lesson, I learned all the fills & solos in a professional way. I bow my head before you, like a humble & thankful disciple to his Great Master ! May God Bless you.
Great lesson❤️❤️❤️Wonderful teaching…. Loved it. Thanks a ton…Keep rocking🎼🎼🎼
Hey man, thanks for all the great lessons, you make the best tutorials on youtube. Thanks again.
I have been playing guitar since this song came out in the late 70's and now I can play it, Thank you for the great lesson.
With this master teacher you dont need tabs. He is so good! 🙌
What a GREAT TEACHER
for anyone struggling with the last lick, I recommend using your thumb, index and middle finger in that order (index and middle finger both on the E string)
Also props for doing with your fingers just like the legend.
Best guitar teacher on UA-cam. Thank you
One of the best lessons / demonstrations I’ve seen on UA-cam - you must be an amazing player 👏
Yes, you right about the hardest part. It seems anyone listening to the song is waiting for your interpretation of those 125 notes. Thank you for clarifying the thumb function. I might be able to do this now since I'm close to the correct thumb speed. I was adding my index finger before and never seemed to be able to get up to speed. I've seen Mark play it live, he goes on forever with the 125 like he could do it all day. I'll now call it the dreaded 125. Great lesson as usual. Your the best on the net.
This is without a doubt the most accurate and descriptive tutorial I've seen. I'm now a subscriber and I'll check out your other stuff. Thank you for this 👍👍. PS, I especially enjoy how you tell us how much you love each lick or fill and why. It's the same way I feel when I hear them and I'm sure many others "it's so good right?" 😊 Yes, it definitely is. I'm a big fan of anything Mark Knopfler
God Bless Ya! Learning this has been an adventure!
I'm really impressed with your lessons. Best video out there. The black T-shirt and background with the bound ebony fretboard keeps everything in focus where we can see what you're doing without anything to distract the eye. It takes the mystery out of wondering if I am capable of playing a song or not. Thanks for sharing and boosting our confidence.
This song is great .
Mind and fingers workouts
1979 cover American Band came to Guatemala City.
and played this song, at that time i din,t know it was from Dire straits.then in 1980
in New york City a Guy from Argentina, made some Guitars for Mark Knopfler.
Grateful for my life Experience. Sharing my memories.
Ive been playing since I was 12 and this by far is the best lesson Ive learned. You make it so easy to relate to the chords .I now understand the guitar much better than any lesson given to me in the past . Thank you very much ! This will be fun to practice !
Wow...Awesome teaching..!!! A little fast but...just watch it over to ...catch up..!! Thanks..!!!😁👍
Best tutorials in history, good job man. Keep going fearlessly forward
You are the best UA-cam teacher by far as my opinion. thanks from India.
Best breakdown I’ve seen so far on my favorite song of all time! Great job!
I really appreciate the black background. The contrast is great
Very interesting breakdown of the lead, arpeggios and the shapes that are being played.. thanks for explaining this!!
One of the best Lessons I've ever seen.
Hey man
Your teaching is very good
Mark Knopfler here... you do a great job breaking down my best song ever! We got to jam sometime!.
Incredible Lesson ⭐️🌞 Absolute Top Draw .. I’ve gone over and over this stuff. These Lessons keep me sane grounded and always gives me something to look forward to,makes me realise that a good guitarist always has to keep challenging His or Her self, it’s like fitness in that if you don’t keep on top of it you can lose it and quite quickly, Thank You for these Incredible Lessons Sir ⭐️❤️👍🏻🌞🎸. Subbed 🙏
Dear Sir, I must admit your teaching trully is honest unlike others whose confuse between "show off" rather than teaching. You're d man. Cheers One more thing, its better if you can show the chords played during the entire leads played. Great work man, Thks
Your lessons are simply AWESOME and amazingly 100% accurate! Thank you!!!
The man with the golden ears,,,superb deep insight !
You are the best teacher in guitar
Thanks Sir. I really like playing guitar and I think your channel is one of the best channel I've ever found. God bless from Indonesia🙏🙏🙏
Don’t know which is better the performance or the lesson. Just killer. Thanks so much!
Great Lesson! Picked up my Les Paul for the first time in years and got the whole song down in 3 hours flat. Thank you so much!
I've been browsing your fine catalog. It's so refreshing that you don't use the "string and fret" method of instruction and instead refer to position, shape and chord.
You make dreams come true! Blended with music theory, simply fantastic.
Thank you.
Your lessons are so detailed. Amazing job.
I'm here because my girlfriend wants me to learn this song. Your lesson on oh well by fleetwood Mac was amazing and so is this! I've subbed to both your channel and website. Keep up the good work Andy, its people like you who inspire people like me to become a decent guitar player. 14 months in and I'm loving it.
Great lesson. Was interested to see your take on this. I tabbed this out a few years ago and only got stuck in one or two sections where I just wasn't sure what he was doing or if there was another guitar in the background. I'll have to pull out my tab and relearn this, it's been a few years. It's a guitar classic. Cheers.
*First solo:* yeah I can do this
*Second solo:* what the actual heck
First solo is for beginners, second solo is for intermediate imho
Charly Lopez I learned the second solo first and after that the first solo was so easy
oh yeah, this will keep me busy the rest of the year!
Great vid, thanks!
Man so much detail .. your Awesome Playing is superb just like my old teacher Roger Dean in Tampa
Oh! It's just so good!
Best lesson I have ever seen. Thanks much
Sounds better than the Original
Amazing. Good One. Mabuhay
Thank you. all these years I'd be playing that last lick in the last solo (with a pick) and knew I wasnt quite right, not sure why it didnt occut to me that w/out pick would have it sounding more correct. I could get the fast pull offs etc but never could really get the initial two cheeky quick notes on B and E strings before the pull off...not with a pick at least :) Without a pick its kinda like the thumb and finger are dancing together and sort of rolls off rhythmically. One day I will give the pick up for good LOL
I use a pick also. I find using down strokes on the E and B string followed by an upstroke with the pick then a pull off with the pinky works for me and sounds similar to the thumb version used by the instructor.
brilliant lesson thanks
I go to ur channel fairly often but hadnt subscribed n not sure why but did tht today and also downloaded the tuning vid . Its a help , those special places arent near as bad as before . Thank u very much .

Thank you! I'm not a player, just loved that song and the way you explain it is fascinating
Absolutely fabulous lesson. Especially the finger positioning helps a lot. thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful teacher just a great lesson a master class thankyou
Your the best. As always. I really like how you throw just enough theory in to make it all make sense to some of the more advanced players here.
Learning @ playing love it
Very clear and instructional lessons, thank you!
Sultans of SCHWINGGG!!!
Thank you for the lesson
You are awesome.I have played off and on all my life am 64 now.I have never attempted to play lead guitar untill I stumbled onto your site.I now can play all the lead up to and including the 1rst solo. Not smoothly but I can play it.I was wondering if you use your fingernails to pick the lead or just the smooth part of your finger.I use the smooth part and it plays softly.
For the speedy part at the end of the second solo I found that's it's easier to go middle finger-thumb-pointer finger
easier, but not the mark knopfler way. from listening o a number of covers I can always tell when people aren't playing it the same way as Mark, it has a particular nuance to it. Each to there Own though, hope you got the solo down over this year !
Wow, cool sound from Mark K. Stuff. I use to istening this song many times but not playing. Now I'm trying to learn. Keep on teaching and I'll keep on learning. Thumbs up!😀😄
Masterclass. Incredible lesson, incredible song. Thank you.
Thank you for pt 2 as I enjoyed the first - You are quite a slinger & the anonymity adds to the mystique - your teaching is impeccable - I am thinking about a video on preparing for a gig - any suggestions?
Came back again to watch this ... Still excellent.
Thank you so much
you are amazing Sir. You are passing on a wealth of knowledge and thats very noble of you. Thank you :)
You teaching n videos are a class apart. 💯

Thank you for doing one of my favourite songs. I won‘t be able to play it with my beginner/intermediate skill, but I‘ll sure try. Great work as always.

Absolutely fantastic!
Awsome, finally I have seen that extra note MK has in his fast end solo, I knew the main notes, but there was missing one and you helped me finding it.
You are awsome - now I have to learn that speed too. :D
Thank you!
