  • A quick 5 step guide on how to play the "Sultans of Swing" end solo riff in 10 minutes. TABs are available at markknopflertribute. You can find my other tributes to Mark Knopfler here: / @markknopflertribute . If this tutorial was useful for you, please consider making a voluntary donation via PayPal to markknopflertribute@gmail.com. I'm an amateur musician who likes the sound of Mark Knopfler's guitar playing and has fun in trying to get close to his sound. In no way I'm claiming to be as good as or better than the original.

11 years later, thank you. I will be 67 soon enough. I will not be 100 percent on playing this, but I have confidence I can do well enough. My hands are beat up a little, but this was much helpful. Thanks.

I fully agree. It took me a while to really figure out what strings are to be picked. But at the end, very helpful. At the the age of 62. Speed follows posture.

I'm 74 yrs old and glad to find your analytical break down of the 4 sounds at the end of solo. I finally made it. Thank you

You know, I have tried to understand exactly what technique Knopfler was employing to get that tone, for years and years! Thank you so much for taking the time to share! As an older player, I do find it easier on my picking hand to employ my middle finger in this exercise to prevent my fingers from cramping up. This just goes to show that guitar playing is a journey where one can never know enough. Every day is a new learning experience. Again, thanks!

Well done for a well explained tutorial. I get a bit angry at those guys that do a thumbs down on stuff like this. I ask "how much did you pay to watch this"? Nothing? Exactly! Were you forced to watch it? No? Well then, don't be so jealous, just pick up your guitar and do better, and show us your version. No? Exactly....

Man,you are a great teacher and player......but I am 65 year old guitarist, leave the that stuff in the 2 hard basket, I will go back to the easy stuff..LOL I grew up with The Stones, The beatles, Cream,Yardbirds,The Animals.Led Zepp......and the others where 5 chords got you buy.........power to the finger picking players, but I am lost doing that.......thanx for a great demo...........

You missed your calling. One of the best breakdowns of a riff I’ve seen on UA-cam. I started out with folk fingerpicking ala James Taylor and really didn’t progress into rock much save for some rhythm strumming. Wish this technology existed in the 70’s......I might have become much better than the low mediocrity I currently possess. Thanks
