    Fantastic lesson, thank you. Most tutorials show you what to play but not why you are playing those particular notes. A light bulb went off for me watching this video and I started to see the fret board in a whole new way. I am finding it a relief not to think about scales at all. Can't wait for more lessons.

    Great lesson - many thanks! So helpful to see such a close analysis of the chords behind the SoS solo part 1 and how the lead/melody notes of Knopfler’s line emerged from those. Great to see the CAGE system put to good user too.
    The analysis on the F shape with the meaningful bends for the 3 and 5 was very useful because I have just tended to think very ‘linearly’ such that notes must be sequential from the underlying scale but, as you showed, the bends ‘up’ have as much validity and purpose as playing a scale in a linear sequence.
    Great tone on your guitar BTW 👍👍

    That's the stuff, Jason! Thanks so much! I was just learning the solos and thinking I should really be figuring out what he's actually doing in terms of scales. You just laid it out so beautifully! Very cool. I've taken CAGED lessons, but was still just working on memorizing scales without really understanding how to improvise over them and move between them in a solo.

    It''s ALMOST right !.. A mighty attempt, and extremely well done !.. Knopfler is mostly (but not entirely) doing this.. Yes 100% ,he follows the Chords around, and very delightfully.. But there are added nuances, which are not explained here.. However if you want to get a handle on this general approach, this is great ! :)

    • @jasondarling
      @jasondarling  Рік тому

      Thank you for commenting. Agreed. 💯 I would say the simplicity of the parts lends itself to Knopfler’s masterful touch both from his left hand, his right hands finger picking and most of all his heart and soul. ✌️

    • @jasondarling
      @jasondarling  3 роки тому +4

      So glad you find this helpful. I would start by just picking a chord then play the root note through all the chord shapes of the CAGED. then root - 3rd. Then root -3rd - 5th. Then root - 3rd - 5th - 7th. Then 1-3-5-b7. Then 1-b3-5-b7 etc. I have been finding that doing this, playing these arpeggios through the CAGED shapes, really bridges the fret board together and putting the available shapes into the minds eye. Hope that helps!
