Hey! I have a question but I'm not sure you would see this since this video is a year old, but I'm curious: is it okay to replace the preservative solution on these preserved specimens when the water turns murky? I'm a 3rd year biology student and we will also be preserving animal specimens for our incoming internship program so I'm genuinely intrigued by the impeccable preservation of your collection!
Yes. For wet specimens you should change out preservative solution every so often to prevent evaporation and bacterial contamination of the specimen. Some solutions last longer than others, but they should be changed if they get cloudy or develop an odor.
@@childofcascadia Thank you! Our department has some interesting specimens but they're obscured by the discolored solution, and our faculty doesn't suggest replacing the solution even though we display them during events, so I got curious
Hello I’m from The Bahamas and I find your videos very interesting ✨. Bimini (Bim-a-nii) is one of our islands, The Bahamas consists of 700 islands and cays home to many rare and common species of sea life all over the world.
Are those notes on special paper and/or ink? How do those stay so solid? And on your workplace, it looks like you're filling out your own records card-- in a very wet environment. How do you keep recording documents clean/dry during this process? The specimens themselves are really neat, but can you do a video on record and documentation for us ultra-nerds? 😀
I believe it's pronounced BIM-in-ee. It's in the Bahamas (as the tag says) off the Eastern coast of Florida. There was a famous shark lab located there ... just Google it. I really like your videos, and I just subscribed to your channel. The snail was great ! I would just suggest you look up the pronunciation and information for the words you're not familiar with, so that you can educate your viewers on those as well. Great video ! Thank you!
Why do museums always preserve a ton of things in one jumbled up jar, and a shitty jar at that. Why not put them in a differently shaped container so they don't get preserved in wonky shapes and crushed or damaged in storage??????
Convenience. Not all of these are irreplaceable. They don’t break. Also we’ve just done it like that for ages. There aren’t that many samples being taken anymore.
I kind of feel bad they were unable to be born. So many females that could have gone on to produce so many offspring for the good of the species. I would be surprised if they even knew the momma shark was pregnant when they caught her, if she was even alive.
Hmm well if they were collected today you'd have a point as the species is endangered, but when these samples were taken the species was far more abundant and considered least concern. I don't think a single litter from the 1950's would've done much for the population now.
How do they get like paralyzed in ethanol are they still alive and growing or are they dead and the ethanol just keeps them from drying out im so confused
"Hey, what's that jar you're holding, pickled fish?"
"Not exactly..."
No it's a shark jar

The three shark embryo's stuck together in a cyclical form is badass and needs to be a band logo.

I dissected a pregnant Dogfish shark once in a biology class. Preserved shark embryos are really cool. They're just like tiny versions of their moms!
This is the best thing on you tube. I'm binge watching your whole channel

Not hammerheads, hammer should be concave. These are baby bonnet heads a smaller cousin of hammerheads.
the shorts are too short, make more of these they're fascinating

You have the loudest insect ?
This is wicked. Perfect
I think it’s a fish.
I have a question for you does people kill the animals or are they already dead
Your channel rocks!
How do you have the animals if they are dead?
They are preserved in some kind of Chemical to stop decomposition.
"Let's open it up and see what's inside" definitely not hammmer head sharks
