  • Sharks and other deep sea animals are often misrepresented in photos and film. I thought of a few more examples: hagfish, cookiecutter sharks, and blobfish. Can you think of any more?

      basically, the fish died from the bends, that horrific thing that happens to deep sea divers if they ascend too fast. It is supposed to be terribly painful. So yeah, it makes me sad too. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who do awful things for social media clicks.

      Not all fish are created equal. Quiet simple as that. The Antarctic Toothfish for example that is fished for as a delicacy at greater depth´s (about 4-6000 feet) than the Blobfish (2-4000 feet) does not swell up that extreamly and mostly looks like it does under water.

    • @Crucial_End
      @Crucial_End Рік тому +20

      The Oarfish swims up to surface levels during night iirc and down again. Sperm whales for example can also dive down to around 2000 ft hunting for food and they do not get deformed. The reason Blobfish turns to a blob is because it lives its entire life in the deep so its body never evolved to handle the change in preassure at surface level.

      Theoretically any fish could swim up to the surface or down to the depths and be completely fine, but fishing pulls them up too quickly so their bodies don't have time to adjust to the pressure difference. Mammals on the other hand can't go too deep into the ocean because they don't breathe water, so their internal organs will always be at a different pressure than the environment, which can be deadly deep down.

    • @TheAscael

      ancient comment but that's not really comparable to what this video was about, since (at least to my knowledge, i guess i could always be wrong lol) that's something goblin sharks just...do on their own. it's just a unique and interesting feature they naturally have, it isn't any different than showing a cobra with its hood open or a cuttlefish changing colors. i don't see how it "ruins their reputation" when they are indeed just like that, even if it isn't all the time. if someone thinks they should all die or something because they're a lil ugly sometimes that's just a skill issue tbh

    Seems like it could be disfigured. I at first thought it was a goblin shark but they look drastically different. The only similarity is the mouth, which could be the disfigured part of it. Or I suppose it could be a younger age of a goblin shark

    this is like when a species is introduced into a new environment it can potentially find its own place in the food web and not do any damage or even help it a little but most likely it will be come invasive and do more harm than good

    I think there is a difference in showing the inflated blobfish as a speciment and the exposed teeth of the cookie cutter shark.
    It's not its neutral position, but it does look like that when it bites.
    I wouldn't think that exposing a mandrill with its fangs exposed could be considered decivious

    fishermen fish the deep sea because of food animals that can live there such as halibut and roughies :) the fisherman was likely looking for those or other deep sea food fishes and caught this fella as bycatch!

    i think that's a dogfish. also, hagfish invert their jaws when they bite; kinda like how the bobbit worm inverts its jaw into a bear trap, the hagfish inverts its jaw into a cheese grater. also also, i think cookie cutters need to tilt their heads upwards [keeping the lower jaw stationary] to charge into their prey item, then when the lower jaw pierces and latches on, the shark pivots around that point to huck out a chunk of fleshy flesh

    I think there should definitely be disclaimers on photos like that so people know that isn't what the creature normally looks like, but I think it's similar to taking a picture of a dissected animal and posting it. I think the real problem is that these are more obscure animals so people see them cut open and think that's just normal but if you did the same to a squirrel or a frog or something anybody could tell that you took its insides out and would understand that it has just been modified so you can view the guts easier.
