Lyrics:
The cool air
Takes me back,
Just for a moment,
And I spend it all without realization.
I have to go back.
I have to go back.
It's not fair.
I wish that time would stop for me,
Just this once,
But it never will, so run it off.
I'm still here.
I know you're waiting for me past the doorway
And if it's you that's haunting me, say something.
And if it's you that's haunting me, say something.
If it's you that's haunting me, just speak.
I've come this far with a different map in each of my hands.
They're drawn completely from memory.
One takes me home, one takes me nowhere in particular.
I always seem to pick the path with all the shortcuts open
And the lines and the circles more steadily drawn.
(I guess there's only one more way to go.)
I always seem to say the things that I had promised I would leave unspoken
And act surprised when they come tumbling out into the air and sounding wrong.
(We've all been way too far away from home.)
I never thought of what would happen if I ever found the gate closed,
Tethered in rusted thread and iced over blue and grey from the cold.
(It's time to break off all those chains of old.)
But the gate holds, allowing entrance to the wind and smaller leaves and I am stuck now, homebound.
(I guess there's only one more way to go.)
Can I turn back?
Is it too late?
Is there some place I belong?
Is there any place to call a home?
I guess there's only one real way to know.
Is this the only way?
As shallow as the water is, it swallows me.
And I can't stop looking at the world around me solemnly.
As we stand here in the fallen leaves,
Will you promise me, just promise me
That no matter what the weather's like, you'll follow me, follow me?
And no matter what I say, you'll take it honestly, honestly to heart?
I've got a long way to go and if I do it alone I won't make it.
The call of the void is coming from the balcony.
"L'appel du vide."
So now I let my fate take over
And as I sink into the consequence below,
This is how far we go.
This is how far we go.
So now I let my fate take over
And as I sink into the consequence below,
This is how far we go.
This is how far we go.
Face forward falling straight for the pavement,
Mouth open catching death just to taste it.
Twist my body to align with the stars,
This is my favorite part.
This is my favorite part:
Suspended close to earth but very far.
This is my favorite part.
Once we touch the ground we forget who we are.
I guess I finally had the courage to go away.
The promises we made were made hollowly.
Sometimes you'd reassure me we'd be okay.
But you'd always leave.
#ALotLikeBirds #NoPlace
you get a song like this like once every 10 years
Jubez 187 then you hear the whole album and your like *albums like this come once ever 30 years* lol
yep
Only four to go
Almost 10 years and haven't found another one yet
its not fair
the instrumental version of this song was in the outro of a drew gooden video. i was instantly entranced. i'm so thankful i was able to discover this band. instantly their music makes me feel a type of way. it's amazing.
hello fellow stinker!!
@@olivia2531 hello guy
That's how I found them too and I've been obsessed ever since. Conversation Piece is unrelentingly intense, raucous, and musically heavy, No Place sacrifices some intensity for being immensely thought provoking and dynamic, and DIVISI is simultaneously gut wrenching and uplifting with its soaring swells of music and poetry
Wow that's cool I watch a bit of drew Gooden but didn't know he listened to this band
McSpiderMan I guess he’s into the progressive post-hardcore scene in general ‘cause I saw him comment on a song off HTS’s last album.
The raw emotion of this song is almost overwhelming.
just discovering in 2020 as a 25 year old. my 15 year old self would have went nuts over these guys sound lol.
exactly the same for me lol
I'm 34 and going nuts over them now. Lol age is only a number young'un
Check out Intronaut, you might like them
Time flies, huh?
I discovered them in 2013 when they had just released their second album I was 19. Definitely, did help me cope with mental illness
Kurt is so much better in this band, its like he was meant to be there all along. The lyrics, the soul, it sounds so genuine. This band is the perfect combination.
Hes amazing with Royal Coda, specifically the newest album "To only a few a first"
🤓
A Lot Like Birds cures everything that's wrong with the world, just for a moment.
Kurt Travis was the best thing that ever happened to Dance Gavin Dance, with A lot like bird and his solo carrier, he proves that everything he touch turn to gold, he's a brilliant musician
Weird how I keep stumbling across this guy totally unaware lol.
This song simply is the beauty of creation and artistry merged into sound.
Thats why it'll be the last song Aldon ever hears 🌠
"Face forward falling straight for the pavement, mouth open catching death just to taste it. Twist my body to align with the stars, this is my favorite part. This is my favorite part: suspended close to earth but very far. This is my favorite part. Once we touch the ground we forget who we are." I was thinking about these lyrics as I was riding the bus home from work today. I started tearing up. They are so brilliant.
Sleep deprivation + this song = insanity.
ayyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeee
I remember months ago just blasting this at 2-3 in the morning because my insomnia just kept me in my head and this song just freed it for real... あリガト ALLB..
+Elijah Radt insomnia is a response to a life lived in disregard. i'm not saying this as an outside observer, or some detached point of view, i'm saying this because i know, because i couldn't sleep for a few months. then i quit my job, stopped giving a fuck, let people, whoever, family, friends, whatever, think what they want, but. my point, you can't deny what you know inside. thats fucking pointless. what we feel is the only thing that is real, nothing that is projected onto you from the external means a damn thing. thats just how it is in the world. what i'm trying to convey is that, there is something within you that is trying to tell you you need to fix/correct/change/right/true/balance; something in your life, and you can't sleep because there is something within you desperately trying to show you this, pleading for you to listen, to stop what doing to you. it doesn't matter.. as long as the stimulus stops, it doesn't matter, just remove/heal it. for anyone even if not for you.
Doritofan lel... wtf are you even doing here?? I mean, are you even listening to the music??
Laughing out loud only affirms this notion. XD
"L'appel du vide" - The call of the void.
L'appel du vide is that tiny voice that tells you to jerk the steering wheel just to the right and take a flying leap off the ledge...that inclination to walk right into the ocean and never return...the call of the Siren song/The urge to jump from high places when they encounter them, for example when close to the edge of cliffs.
well....that hit me like a bag of bricks
First time I heard this song was several years ago. A friend picked us all up tripping and blasted this while we drove past all these beautiful Christmas lights, we ended up at a cemetery and later one of our friends died and was buried in that same cemetery. RIP Kyle. That night was one of my happiest memories with you.
The way that Cory and Travis interlink their vocals in that spoken part gives me so many fucking chills. Spellbinding.
L'appel du vide (the call of the void), they included this in the lyrics. I love this band. And for those of you wondering this French phrase describes the strange feeling of wanting to jump off when in a high place.
+Sasis321 Thank you so much! I have been trying to understand that line for like a whole year.
+Gauge Stibbs Happy to help c: I can't wait to see them in December
+Sasis321 I'll be seeing them in December as well!
+Sasis321 I'll be seeing them in December as well!
+Gauge Stibbs What a coincidence cx. I hope you enjoy them as much as I plan to.
Album of the year. No questions asked.
DGD + La Dispute? been looking for where Kurt went after DGD, didnt know HE was the singer of alot like birds.
Crazy right! Its almost like a cow laid some eggs
@@dannysage008 is it almost like a cow laid some eggs tho?
@@SanguineThor I'm confused, do you not see how this is exactly as if cows laid some eggs? Cmon man, pull yourself together, there's a war to be won!
I hate it when people mash two bands together like, " This is like this + this " like dude, what if A Lot Like Birds was just A Lot Like Birds....
how tf does this song have ANY dislikes at all?? it's incredible. I get chills every time I listen to it..
for shame smh..
go away brittany
+Andrew Hagan go away andrew
Hey, your hot and you have good taste in music + YT channels.
@Liberation Music doesn't need to rhyme.... and yes, they are yelling and talking, because the voice is capable of many things and only utilizing one style is quite limiting...
This song both depresses the ever-lasting fuck out of me yet is also easily one of my favourites by this band, maybe even ever.
As someone who spent their entire childhood moving at least every 2-3 years until 8th grade, I still have issues being able to connect to one place as home... and this album speaks to me so hard because of that.
Everything Kurt Travis touches turns to gold
I don't think I've ever been so emotionally attached to anything like how I am to A lot like Birds
OMG The lyrics, the melody, the progression, and this BURST OF EMOTIONS AT 4:43, the BEST song of their album!!
I must confess that I was expecting a lyric video too. But I'm not disappointed at all.
Imagine what they could've been today if Kurt never left and they never broke up.
A Lot Like Birds are true artists...they create such compelling music...every song is meaningful, magical and just amazing...you can just feel the suspense; creepy, yet subtle at the same time - cannot wait to listen to the whole album.
It was like yesterday, Look how time Flies
I was thinking exactly the same thing.. the spoken word and poetry of it is unmistakably similar.
Just got the Polyphia album Muse on vinyl for my birthday and included was this album. Incredible.
These guys are raw art man. Some of the best musicians out there
This song is definitely growing on me. Joe's drumming always manages to make even the more mellow songs interesting.
so glad he's not writing lyrics about relationships and breakups anymore. also, ssoooo sweet the lack of chorus.
"It's so funny when you speak of love so fluently, you have ruined me" Even if he wrote lines like that?
Stephan Smith
why are you trying to start an argument, thats not real interaction, be aware of yourself. that line isn't in this song
Swansen03 Why did you consider that question confrontational? "that line isn't in this song" Okay... what's your point?
Oh but the whole song is the chorus
Zapfproninja What are you talking about?
Beautiful composed, the lyrics hit you like a freight train running at 160mph. Been listening to this since it was released.
Holy Jesus
This song is somehow unlocking memories I had shoved away...
This sounds like something my dad would've listened to back when times seemed good...
He'll still listen to it, it's just not the same, y'know?
Kurts voice goes along with the guitar so well. This band is definitely one of the best because of how talented they are all around.
IM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS, IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR KURTS MUSIC FOREVER.
Anyways people giving this hate for saying it's "copying DGD" aren't entirely wrong. The upbeat tones etc are like DGD and the vocals obviously because Kurt, but they are a very different band
Go listen to any DGD record and lyrically and even instrumentally a lot like birds is different..plus the self title and happiness had Kurt's touches regardless. I can tell this band is gonna be more "deep" than DGD is, with the playfully nature of some of DGD's songs, like pounce bounce or thug city, etc.
THANK YOU!
hi
mustbjordan This band is way more technical than DGD. Instrumentally and lyrically.
the upbeat tones are something that loads of bands do its not a trait of dgd. plus this band is miles better than dgd and thats saying a lot because i love dgd
RIP.
DIVISI was good for what it was imo, at least Kurt is still doing a thousand side projects... Hopefully Royal Coda will be "the one".
I'm writing this too late, but I really fell in love with this band, I haven't heard them for about 3 or 4 years and now I just remembered them a few minutes ago, but dude, I feel like I have regained part of my soul
Same 😭😭😭
And that moment when it's over and it completely exceeded all your expectations. This song is amazing.
The spoken words on the second verse are so good, the meaning these guys put into their songs are so profound. Can't wait for what I hear next.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. Amazing.
Kuroi Ledge deserves music video!!!
no way man. Tilian Pearson has revived and redefined that band...don't even try to forget about Will Swan, Matt Mingus, or Jon Mess. Their new album is so freaking good. Not to take away from the rest of your comment about how good Kurt is, but Tilian is perhaps the best fit for that band now.
So here I am 10 years later.. and this guy still has a grip on me. It's taking me back to exactly the time period I was in when I orginally listen to it.
its making me really sad... I know its partially the nostalgia taking over , but I wish I understood it more.
It's also really crazy to see how far UA-cam has come... that Im literally commenting on the SAME video 10 years later seeing my comment
This cool song takes me back...
Wow.
I have listened to this song (and album) countless times. I regularly cycle through pretty much everything Kurt Travis done vocals for.
Dance Gavin Dance, Royal Coda, A Lot Like Birds, Stolas, etc.
Point being- his work is a staple in my library.
But just now I caught Kuroi Ledge on shuffle and something struck me like a punch to the ear:
0:30 to 1:05
I never really dove into how much range and manipulation Kurt puts out vocally.
I think it's fairly underrated.
Especially with A Lot Like Birds. Not just range- but sometimes it's like a different person belting it out and makes you question if it's actually him.
And of all the groups he's been with, I'm settled that this group brought out the best of his talent. Pretty sure it was Cory Lockwood that brought it out of him too.
Years later this song still makes me tear up ❤️😢
Damn, man, the ending of this song just hits me so hard.
What a great band.
I don't know if intentional or not, but if anyone's wondering, kuroi means black in Japanese.
Satoko Tanabe look up the reason for the song name
I guess it's about a ledge that leads to death
Its about kuroi jokai or smth, a suicide forest in Japan
@@BlackChanal Kuroi Yokai means Black Yōkai. Yōkai are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons in Japanese folklore. The suicide forest you think of is 青木ヶ原 (Aokigahara) which literally means Blue Tree Moor / Blue Tree Wilderness.
In a washed up and unoriginal genre, you guys do everything right and are so unique.
i keep telling myself i cant listen to this until THE COOOOOOL AIIIRRR BRINGS ME BACKKK
This song gives me shivers.... All their songs have so much meaning.
ya dude , these guys are nothing like dgd , a lot like birds stay true to there sound , they are def in a class of there own , a all time fav band of mine ever since I heard them on mp3.com years ago. def one of the best artist out today for sure
Im gonna preorder this, not listen to any leaks, and when it finally gets to my house im gonna listen to it so hard.
does anyone get a 'circa survive' vibe off this or is it just me... i saw a lot like birds accidentally at warped and i really enjoyed their set even though i didn't know any of their songs :p also i got a contact high from the guy next to me so there's that
3 years too late but yes i get hella circa vibes. same with tides of man
No
That was great in whole, but to be honest, L'appel du vide and everything after is what really got me. It's that harshness the whole band puts forth, the big emotional close where you know everyone's got all of their energy in topping the song off, that I love. But that's just me.
The first album was fantastic and I'll be buying this on day one. Kurt is amazing with every project he does.
This is what I interpret from the album cover, each song can be represented around the house and the smoke. In Trances: the No Solicitors sign on the front porch. No Nature: I haven't figured that one out I think it's the devilish faces coming from the smoke. No Nurture: I'm guessing it's the parents with the tv set im not sure. Next To Ungodliness: the boy looking into the mirror inside the bathroom. Connector: not sure about this one Myth of Lasting Sympathy: the childhood memories above the house(the stuffed bear, baseball mitt, and 8 ball) Hand Over Mouth: The bedroom Kuroi Ledge: the balcony. Recluse: The brown recluse spider above the house as well. Shaking of the Frame: the entire house with the chaos and mishap surrounding it.
Connector would have to do with him looking in the mirror because the songs about self expectance. I love you're interpretation on the album though, it changed my outlook! Good thinking :)
+Post Moer Connector is the spine sticking out of the window.
+Post Moer Can you shut the fuck up seriously how old are you
For those that are curious after reading this:
In Trances: Doorbell/ Porch
No Nature: Basement
No Nurture: Living Room
Next to Ungodliness: Bathroom
Connector: Hallway
Myth of Lasting Sympathy: Closet
Hand Over Mouth, Over and Over: Bedroom
Kuroi Ledge: Balcony
Recluse: Attic
Shaking of the Frame: Spare room

2024 and this still one of my favourite songs ever in the genre
This is the best song on the new album. Love it so much.
I can't count how many times this song has saved my life.
So much passion in the music these guys put in this song, can't wait for the album to be released
This is the first song I've ever listened to which made me cry. This is beauty. This is true art. Music that can express such emotion and really cause you to think about your life due to it's lyrics and the way the music is put together. Thank you A lot Like Birds for making the best music in the world. Never stop.
This is going to be the album of the century.
Just realized that this song goes over someone who give up on life and killed him self and the world L'appel du vide Translates literally as “call of the void”. The urge some people get to jump from high places when they encounter them, for example when close to the edge of cliffs. very sad song :(
This song is totally gorgeous. I was in tears the first time I heard it, and it gives me nearly continuous chills as I listen even now. I'm so glad I discovered this band - they just might become a new favourite!
Around minute 3:40 my heart explodes in my chest with those crescendoing synths which harmonize so beautifully with the exploding vocals. people are so confused looking at me in my cubicle going banans over the multiorgasmic state my ears are reaching, not knowing the bliss you are inducing Thank you sooo sooo much ALLB!
I still get caught up on Deathstar. I really like how his singing parts are much more free-form, stream of consciousness in this band. They're harder to memorize and sing, but still awesome.
I’m sad that this how sad I was to find this song as my only Release I was a broken dark piece of work I’m glad I was saved the answer will come love is out there guys
seriously, im still not over my total eargasming to acceptance speech, and now ALLB is teasing me. good lord this is awesome.
This song is incredible
I actually love the lyrics to this song. They're so good!
absolutely beautiful
ikr?!
It was really bold for the label to release this song instead of an upbeat, more catchyish song. This album is going to be a masterpiece. The lyrics really hit home too.
Did anyone else get a slight old Circa Survive feel from parts of this song? I love this band, and I'm so freaking happy they are now on Equal Vision.
This is wonderful
Some of the best spoken word out there
This song makes me happy. Their music just gave my soul a big hug.
Can't wait for the album!!
such a good song cant wait for the album to drop omfg !!!
Brilliant, as always.
Amazing song.
I am so utterly inlove. Can't wait for the rest of the album!
this song holds my most prized most beloved quote from anything :P
What is it
we have to know
Any chance this band will return to their original line-up? They're too good not to continue to work together!
Unlikely and it's a real shame. We have yet to have a band capture the beauty of chaos as well as older ALLB
me too its in my chest and its overwhilming, those amazing synths and that crescendo...
Took a while for this song to hit me. Like about 40 listens. Wow. The feels are strong here.
I am amazed that you actually listened to a song you thought you didn't like approximately 40 times lol. That's impressive dude. What kept making you come back to listen to it again?
SOTWfuntime I just didn't really get where this song was going and how it related to the rest of the album. The lyrics told a story I couldn't I really couldn't read (figuratively speaking). But once I was able to read and understand, man the song meant so much more. That funky intro that I found so dull at first made my heart drop a bunch of times after a while. I listened to the album a lot so when I had enough of my favorites on the album, I played more attention to this song. And once I understood that the song was talking about suicide and the"if I do it alone I won't make it" I think part, I started balling and just loved this song. I tend to switch favorites on albums a lot.
Every time I hear this song I like it more and more. This morning I woke up dying to hear it.
Acceptance Speech and No Place coming out in the same month? This is going to be AWESOME
This song is insane. The lyrics are fucking brilliant.
Conversation Piece was their second album and also the first to feature Kurt as the singer. Plan B was their first album.
this is.. a really good song. isn't it
+xXnotyourheroXx see.. there are these things called "synchronicities" you just happen to make this comment, 5 months later, on this particular night, when i happen to be going through what i am right now.. leading me to this song, in this instance right now.. even 30 minutes prior, when certain things were running through my mind.. hiding from what we feel is a mistake, at the same time, its senseless to ignore what those feelings really mean. or why they would even occur to begin with.
+Swansen03 I want whatever you are on right now.
+Soulless Jack pretty ironic really.. those words i wrote 8 months ago couldn't be more valid for my life right now. but i had forgotten i had written them..
This band is really good. stoked for what's coming up! This is also why I like Equal Vision, they sign bands who aren't necessarily a smash hit, but bands who've got passion and talent. As a musician, I want to be signed by them one day.
Sweet mother of fuck im a Huge DGD fan. Kurt is by far my favorite singer of the bunch i was disappointed when he left. But when i listened to him and ALLB i was amazed at how amazing they sounded. Listening to this song gives me a unexplainable feeling in a good way soo stoked to listen to there new album.
amazing! conversation piece was the tightest album i'd heard in so long, and so different sounding to all the other repetitive bands these days. loving it guys!
I love A Lot Like Birds, and I Love Dance Gavin Dance. I loved Dance Gavin Dance more when Kurt was singing because I believe he brought a certain mood along with the songs, which is why I now personally think that A Lot Like Birds is superior. I love this album so far, and as soon as I am able, I'm definitely going to buy it and listen to it for days upon days. But, as I said before, I still love Dance Gavin Dance, and rather like Acceptance Speech. I just like this more.
Guitar and vocals pulled me in right away.
need to hear more noww....
This song is amazing. So real.
i would recommend always closing your eyes when listening to allb
This album is going to rip my fucking heart out.
i cannot stop listening to it...
This is one amazing band, and one amazing song! I'm so stoked that I found these guys, we need more music like this!!
Listen to their album from front to back. Totally worth it.
Will said on the absolutepunk AMA that it's still something he wants to do but it's when they find time since he's so busy with touring etc.
