I remember defensive linemen talking about how frustrating it was to think they just sacked Marino because when they made contact he still had the ball, yet realizing that not only did he get rid of it, he scored a touchdown. If Miami could’ve got the RB they desperately needed to offset the pass attack, that could’ve been the missing piece to their quest for a Super Bowl. He will always be in the discussion for best QB, even Montana, Elway & the other great QB’s of that era talked about being amazed by not only the numbers he was putting up, but by how he did it.

Just heard this podcast and Aikman was talking about his early years in the league, when he first became part of that legendary QB Club of the late 80's - early '90s. Now, Aikman came into the league in 1989, so the members of such club were guys like Elway, Montana, Kelly, Young, Esiason, Simms, etc. What Aikman said about the group was, literally: "Dan Marino was essentially the Frank Sinatra of that club. He was Chairman of the Board. Everybody just kind of huddle around Dan Marino".
Marino was an alpha among alphas, and the guys who have him in the highest regard are not his fans, but his peers. An ex qb once said that if you polled all the QBs from the 80's and 90's to ask them who was the best QB to ever play, the overwhelming majority would say it was Dan Marino. And that's the highest compliment anyone can receive.

A feat no one could reproduce until "08 ..... after all the rules that had been collectively changed in favor of the passing game. Over half the NFL's current Qb's and I'm being generous, would have been washed out after their rookie year with the onslaught of relentless defenses looking to deflate a rookie or young inexperienced QB. Most Qbs careers would be over before they started. Once major rules like hook sliding, throwing the ball away out of the pocket, stiffer targeting rules when hitting the qb, no targeting defenseless receivers, etc etc .... passing numbers went through the roof. Now you can win games being 1 dimensional with barely a sign of defense, Marino and Moon would be fun to watch in this era.

I've been following Dan's career since he was at Pitt. I've never seen a better pure passer.
His Dad taught him how to throw. He told Dan simply, "the ball comes up and out".

The problem with so many Marino highlights is that they are in slow motion and young people don't get to see or appreciate the glory of seeing him in real speed.
Usually of you have someone arguing he isn't one of the best ever, you load up a game like his 1985 Monday night game against Chicago and one drive into the game and they are like "Oh." And they don't argue he isn't anymore.
