Never meant always makes me wanna cry but this song is a close second
take in every moment of high school you can... I remember the first time I listened to American Football, it was during the last few months of my senior year. I was just driving home and listening to them just broke me down, especially this song. I thought back to the late nights with my closest friends, the football games, being in the band, and all my cross country meets. Im in my first year of college and all my friends have gone off to bigger universities. Sure we will see each other but not on a daily basis, won't be the same as high school, but nothing ever is. This album is the closest i will get to reliving my high school memories and how grateful i am to have had some cherish-able moments i will never forget, thank you American Football!
Exact same feeling man, I suggest everyone enjoys their least few years of High School cause things CHANGE
When you're there in that moment you're not just ganna have that thought of "Oh this is the best time of my life, I better enjoy it..." When i was there just like everyone else I wanted to be anywhere else but there. That is the beauty of this music, nostalgia is a painfully beautiful thing that everyone must deal with at some point making the songs that much more poignant...duh...
I listened to this album around the time I graduated college. Same feels. The band recorded this album because they were all about to graduate from UIUC and this was their last chance to record together. It really comes through in the music. Only Never Meant was finished before they started recording. Kinsella just wrote the rest of the lyrics over some instrumentals they had played before.

The trumpet can break any heart in this world
8 years ago when they posted this video I was absolutely blasted on my buddies couch while watching this with my all of friends at that time. I haven’t seen them in a while and we don’t really talk much but every time I watch this, I’m still on the couch hanging out with them and for that alone I will always hold this song, particularly this version dear to my heart.
this song always reminds me of all the memories I could’ve made in senior year if it wasn’t all spent looking at a computer screen, right before COVID, I just began opening up to people, making friends, and being legitimately happy after a long time, then the pandemic struck and washed that all away, I always wonder why it came to this...

I remember reading this comment in the worst era of my life, and it totally broke me. I was going through the same things, the same thing, and this music was the only drug that numbed me. I am doing a lot better these days, and I hope you are too friend.
I think about this too. And can't help but feel grateful for the way the things happened. Sure it was horrible at first. But you'll realize something. And when you do. You're going to feel grateful for everything that has happened
That slight smile Nate does when he's enjoying playing always makes me smile too. He does it on the Tiny Desk video as well, when the kids are singing. We could all learn to enjoy the moment like he seems to.

Yeah the trumpet is cool but could I just point out this specific emotion I feel at 1:59 where Holmes does this little guitar lick that transitions right into the end of Kinsella's part and it just keeps going and I'm like 😤😭
