Brother. You remind me of my older brother I never had! I work exactly the same. Appreciated my friend.!

Good video. An added point to the one you made about alignment that some folks might not know is the gimbal bearing itself pivots slightly. So often what I do is insert the alignment tool then pop it with my hand a few different directions so to break it free. Ive found it’s pretty rare that the engine itself is out of alignment, it’s almost always that the inner race of the new bearing is just stiff…especially if it’s still frozen from being in the freezer. Unless it slips right in like yours does in which case I crack a beer and thank the boating gods.

Yep exactly what I do. Tap the alignment tool North, South, East, West then remove tool and insert drive. Usually goes straight in then. 👍🏻

@@TeamMarineService question; what is the best quality grease-able gimbal bearing that i can purchase? the one i bought in a kit does not allow the grease to flow through the whole bearing as i would like it to, just the outer aluminum housing...

BUY THE ALIGNMENT TOOL or rent one. I replaced one on a 1992 Chaparral 2200 and it was a pain trying to get it aligned by myself. Also replaced bellows kit and joints too since it was already apart. Lesson learned as that was my first inboard boat. Bellows kit as destroyed and leaking, seller lied and I didn't know to check, luckily our maiden voyage didn't end up as a recovery mission. Don't store boat with the outdrive all the way up also, it stretches the boot prematurely. Learned a lot with that boat, that's for sure.

Are sealed bearings and u joints superior or stronger and better than greasable types? How often should bellows and bearings be replaced? Thank you. Great video.

I'd do the seal between the gimbal and engine while I'm at it. What about sealant glue on the non-clamp side of the U-joint bellows? Good video.

I'm actually wondering if you have a video of you reinstalling the leg, I just replaced the lower unit on our leg with the same omc Cobra leg as you have in this video and I'll tell you what it was not fun trying to get it on the back of the boat.

  • @bradhayleyolsen3760

a trick i have learned on some sternlegs is you can fill the drive bellows with oil (pump in with oil can) and if it gets a hole you see the oil on the water so you can pull it apart before it becomes a major.

My volva-penta outdirve is a 99', I cannot find anything wrong with the Gimbal bearing, it looks great. I do believe there was a tiny amount of water in the bellows, I plan to replace the bellows, would you replace the gimbal too just because of the age?

Im about to replace bearing on my "pre" Alpha unit. Does it matter which way the new bearing faces?
There is a side with 2 slots and the opposing side is smooth.
