  • A new and hopefully improved version of my guides for each race where I go over as many basics as possible while doing it live :) I strongly believe that a super structured guide style is not very helpful compared to watching/playing the game actively. Feedback is greatly appreciated. -- Watch live at / wintergaming

    I can say that this is by far the most practical introduction into what I am going to call "how to not lose." I've been a SC fan for years, started playing myself a year or two ago. I've done the campaigns, dabhped in co op mode a bit, but I never quite got the hang of melee games. I never considered myself a "noob", but I just never seemed to be fast enough to keep up. That changed today. Even with my sub-par average APM of 35, I now feel confident enough to at least hold my own. The key, for me at least, was determining the proper number of production facilities needed to spend my resources at an appropriate rate. I see what you mean about marines, marauders, medivacs and tanks being the bread and butter of any competent Terran player. It isn't exciting, but it works.
    On that note, I want to know the actual numbers on how fast you accumulate resources from a fully saturated base. How long does one base of income last?
    From what I can tell, you need about 2.5 bases to max out your army in a reasonable amount of time.
    Once again, thanks. Your guidance has given me the tools I needed to hold.

    Oh. My. God. You can tab through different kinds of buildings. Now I can comfortably use Robo Facility and Stargate while still having hotkeys for warp prism and oracle. I have played nearly 900 games in Starcraft 2, which isn't much, but it is without comfortably being able to use more than two building types. I have to thank you so much Winter, I have learned so much about Starcraft just in the past week from watching your videos.

  • @BothHands1
    @BothHands1 7 років тому +97

    omg, I can't believe I never knew that!! All of production is on one hotkey, and you can tab through them! That will significantly improve my ability to macro, as I had been putting each type of production on different hotkeys, and having to reach down to the zero key. Plus the F2 -F5 camera locations is going to help me a lot too. This was an amazing video, I knew I had to come back and watch it again after stream.
    I'm also going to have to pause your video 100 times to see what you use for your hotkeys on your production. I wonder if you could list somewhere your entire hotkey list.

    • @JT-SushiLaser
      @JT-SushiLaser 7 років тому +1

      you can do the same thing with units. Say for example you have marines and ravens in the same control group, you can tab between them to stim while you auto turret!

    • @SquirrilahFish
      @SquirrilahFish 7 років тому

      +Jacob H (SushiLaser) you can also hit Shift+tab to cycle backwards. So if you want to go from your starports to your factories. You can hit shift twice, or hit shift+tab. This comes in handy when you have all your mech and Bio on one hot key

    • @Grekerr
      @Grekerr 7 років тому

      I didnt get it, how to you put all production on the same key?

    • @viikmaqic
      @viikmaqic 7 років тому +3

      click on all the buildings u want on the same key, then bind them. When you want to use them cycle through them using tab key

    I didn't know that about the wall, will deffo use that - I am already glad I started watching!
    I have done the first 5 or so campaign missions, and have focused on learning the Terrans to get used to the game - I have also played a few of the versus AI matches to train myself
    First time I thought i'd put bases on like every available resource area and drain the map, took too long and wasn't a good strategy for me, plus I got bored quickly and it was a mess - so next match I stuck to less bases, but focused on being more efficient with my economy, and drained the resources from abut 3 or 4 areas while quietly building things like barracks on the side. Unilke what you said though I added more barracks asap and had each one dedicated to a specific soldier type and built up an army of like 70, made up of various soldiers
    Anyway - the first time I attacked the enemies bases with my army and crushed them was an amazing experience man - They didn't know what hit them and I think I only lost like 2 marines in total! I know that I did it basic style, but I am still learning every time I play a match atm and every time I play I learn how to advance my game and equipment..
    Anyway sorry for the story, but if you're new, don't be put off by people talking pro-talk and saying things that sound confusing, stick to it and just keep playing it is an amazing game - I never would have played a game of this genre before but this one has me hooked - love it

      He acctually answered this recently because he gets it so often. Short answer No game is still very alive think about it this way i just go on and there were 12000 games being played. everygame is 2-8 players so even if all of the games were 1v1 or coop (which blizzard has released proof that its not) then thats still 24000 people on a weekday when all the kids are still in school and alot of the older folks are at jobs.
      Also if you are concerned about matchmaking i played 5 games yesterday at 6 am and my waiting for match time was about 5 seconds everytime.

    Winter I love you bro no lie. And by the way I'm your newest fan. You are too funny, this video, too funny, you had me laughing out loud when you "pimped" your opponents "crib" with two engineering bays, and then once again when you started comparing rines/rauders/medis to "the instant mash potatoes in your life"! Lol! I have been studying your Terran tech and I wish to become as good as you. After hitting diamond I've decided to watch pro build order before making my claim for Master's bracket... and my irl friend told me you were the go to guy, I understand why he believes that, your knowledge of the game is deep brother! In this video alone I learned to multi hotkey production buildings and tab thru them, and I also learned about camera position hotkey, and I'm only half way through the vid! Haha. I'm serious when I say I wish is to become friends with you in Starcraft 2!! :D if you want to grant your newest fan's wish Add DarkHorizon@sc in game. Thanks for Video, absolutely brilliant! Yeal, 1st Battle, during Brood War SC 1 that's what I did on an open Map with no great Blocking opportunities. 2 to 8 Marines, and two quick siege Tanks! My study is over now, I got it together even though I still haven't played StarCraft 2. It took 35 to 40 Zerg Videos, but i saw it all I think. Just saying, The Terran rule in StarCraft 2 too! Theory -permanent validity regardless of fluctuations in theory. Although I'm not seeing faults with Default Values, it's like a Chess Game, White get's the 1st move only advantage but make a mistake and accidentally place a Piece in the wrong position, and Black's chances of Winning significantly improve. I like an open playing field and it's inherent status. You're the Best, keep taking advantage of Errors and wishful thinking! Good Luck (If I ever decide to play this game then I'll Subscribe. However, I'm not opposed to 'Wishful Thinking'.)

    A good thing to know if there is a tank standoff is that there attack range is greater then there vision range. Get a viking or any flyer u happen to have available for that slight extra vision range and low lvl players will rage and think u are hacking the game becouse there tanks cant fire back.

    He does everything so efficiently and quickly... Like by 9 minutes he has sooo much, that would take me like 20 + minutes probably even more....

    I saw some comments from people who do not yet own LotV. I recently purchased the content and haven't looked back. As someone previously pointed out, the early game is significantly more enjoyable and fast paced. Most new units are either extremely fun to play, vital to make and break some interesting combos and offer more flexibility for all races (e.g. Hydra into Lurker). And for those who, like me, are very hesitant to play against other players: I promise you will enjoy the campaign and coop missions. The decision to spend money is up to each and everyone of you. I for my part only purchased LotV after the game's price got reduced.

    Hey Winter! I'm hoping you will do a similar guide for Zerg. Your 'real talk' style for the lower leagues is really helpful, none of this hundreds of apm builds for every flavour stuff.

    Great video, a lot of useful tips and less stupid talk than in other people videos. Learned a ton, now I need to play and implement all of that. Getting my butt kicked during custom games with friends.

    hey man super useful but Maybe explain what might happen in different scenarios say he's rushing ultralisks and those giant zerg mammoth things? Or air units? also you didn't explain what time you should be upgrading your base. How many scv's did you build before you did that?

    26:05 you look at his base for less than a second and somehow get all the info you need. That must come with experience I suppose
