    Love your videos. I sit for hours. I used to work on my buddy's 1984 Turbo-look coupe. I would have liked to have seen your install using the cord, but I realize the camera operator was pressed into service herself.

      Thanks! Yes we almost always have to multi-task to get the job done.
      Next time will try the tripod mount and see what we get.

    awesome job, again. short and sweet vid. i was pretty nervous to do mine because theres no room to deal w rubber in front of dash pad if cord fails, but it worked out easier than any other glass i ve done. the rear quarter glass however was a quite a drill to get at. 4 hrs of german yoga to make it happen. ps there are no vids of a quarter glass install.

    What is the sealant used, and does that apply to windshield installations for 944/968 also?

      @klassikats  3 місяці тому

      The sealant required is listed in the factory shop manuals. I purchase it from our local body shop supplier.

      @@klassikats hi Kurt, for those of us who do not have access to factory shop manuals, can you please give us more details about what that sealant is, so that we can search for it? Thank you

    I need this done. haven't found a shop yet to do it.

      Not many shops left that will still do this job. The seals that are available are an issue and even finding the glass these days can be tough.

    Thanks Kurt! I’m also curious about the sealant used 😀.
    I took my -85 to the local Porsche dealer to get all original parts installed and paid by the insurance. They struggled a LOT 😢. Eventually getting it in but damaging the paint as well.
    I’m now worried about the seal because it creeps in on the top corners.

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 місяці тому +1

      If the seal is pulling out of the corners there could be an number of causes from the trim being not fitted correctly, the sealing lip not clean enough and debris is stopping the seal from seating, or lastly if the interior trim work around the windshield is shrinking back it can hold the seal up. The sealant applied is not a glue and does not hold the windshield in. It is however the final waterproofing step to ensure that water does not get in behind the seal.

    Hi Kurt, Thank you very much for all your great videos. I have a 1976 that I’m restoring and wanted to replace the seals without the metal trim, do you know if I can use the later 964 trim less seals on the shallow 9mm lip ?

    Can you kindly share the measurement for correct positioning of the mirror button on a SC windshield? Would really appreciate it as I need to replace it on a car that came with original windshield but both pieces were missing. Thanks!

    Hello Kurt, it's been months i've been trying to fit a new windshield in my 86 Carrera cabriolet (exactly like this one). Either one of the bottom corner pops because my partner didn't apply enough pressure (the gap is immense), either the side are too close even without pressure applied and the string tears the seal. It's like my 6th Porsche seal, and i also bought 2 non-porsche seals but the quality isn't the same so i don't even tried them on. Have you any tip ? I tried every diameter of rope imaginable. The windshield is a new Pilkington/Sigla, not a chinese special, and Saint-Gobain/Sekurit doesn't make them anymore, at least, no green tint with integrated antenna.

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 місяці тому +1

      If the seal is tearing, either the cord is too small or there is too much pressure on the seal. When you lay the windshield in the body, it should start out pretty close to the retaining lip. If the glass is not sitting well to begin with, then there may be an issue with the body or with the glass itself.

      @@klassikats Even using 1/4 to 5/16 nylon rope it stills wants to tears itself when i go up the side (no gap at all with the body) without any direct pressure. I only apply pressure on the bottom corner (not further than the antenna hole typically) because if there is no pressure applied in the corner the windshield pops out of it ... Could be glass, it's like it was made too wide and not curved enough in the corners. What glass did you use ? Supposedly porsche still use Pilkington as they did back in time, which is what i've got.

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 місяці тому +2

      So I use a 1/4" cord and have never torn a seal with it. It does need a lot of soap on the seal, and maybe your seal is getting stuck, which is causing it to tear. Also, you need to start from the top of the glass and work your way down each side of the glass, pushing the windshield up into the opening as you go. On this one, we used a Factory Porsche windshield, and to be honest, it was a battle to get it in correctly. I have installed the Chinese ones that I used to get for about a $100 that were a breeze to install and gave me no issues at all. Unfortunately my supplier on those is no longer around.

      @@klassikats I worked the other way around, starting from bottom center to top (just to have less rope to feed under the antenna cable), that may explain the problem. Do you think lubing inside the seal groove could also help ? Thanks for your insight on this, it's very valuable, as always.

    • @klassikats
      @klassikats  3 місяці тому

      Starting at the bottom is going to be the biggest issue. Because the glass is bigger and wider at the bottom it is not going to seat into the frame and instead will just jam. Yes you need lube the seal lip inside and out with soap and water. That will also explain the seals wanting to rip as the rubber will tend to stick to cord and the windshield frame lip.
