@@MarkLawrenceKiefer An 800m specialist would certainly win over Fred in 600m. The good 800m runners can run at least 46 mid and some sub 46. Fred would have lactic overload at 500m.
My bets on Kerly. 400m guys are known to be able to swing up to the 800 occasionally, and while an 800 guy will be fast in the 400 they shouldn’t be competition worthy. I bet it would be close, but nah. Maybe an even better race would be the 400 gold medalist vs the 800 gold medalist
Which 400 guys swing up to 800? It’s super super rare. The only one I can think of in recent times is Emmanuel Korir, but even in his case he was more of an 800m dropping down to the 4, not a 4 guy stepping up.
The 600 reminds me of the original "Chairman of the Boards," Marty McGrady who would regularly challenge and beat the reigning Olympic 400 (Lee Evans) and 800 (Ralph Doubell) Olympic champions and world record holders, plus everybody else.
Kerley would dust him the first 500m, but hocker’s amazing kick I think would just barely beat him in the last 100m. Very close, but I think hocker would take it
I love Fred and if he was still dropping 44 400s I think he could take it easy but it's been a while since he has ran a 400 in a competitive race. 600 is really short for Cole and it might be short enough for him to almost flat out in. Like, I think Cole could maintain 12s splits for 600m. The question would be could Fred maintain sub 12 splits? IDK but I'd love to see it. I think Fred would be better off on a track than the road against a middle distance guy but if that's what he wants, ok.
Fred can stride for the first like 500m then if he happens to be behind just push that last 50-75. Just because he's a sprinter doesn't mean he doesn't have range.
It's tough to call. If we look at the women's side, the 600m WR is now held by Mary Moraa an 800m specialist who runs quite a few 400m races. If Cole was an 800m specialist, I would probably give it to him. If we look at the 500m on the women's side the current WR is held by Femke Bol, although that's an indoor time, it's still a 400m specialist holding the record. Based on this, I think Fred Kerley has the best chance, as 600m is too far away from the 1500m, where Cole is best suited, at least based on his current training and performances. That said, Fred has obviously been specializing in the shorter sprints for a few years now, but I doubt it would take him too long to regain his 400m strength.
Cole Hocker would win for sure I think. Those last 200 require so much more endurance than 400. Anything above 400 isn’t a sprint anymore imo. 600 is I think more mid distance than a sprint.
Not sure what Hocker’s personal bests are over 100M, 200M and 400M - maybe close to 10.80, 21.60 and 46.50, respectively, at best (I’m somewhat guessing of course). But no doubt a long, long way behind Kerley’s personal bests of 9.76, 19.76 and 43.64. Kerley would just coast (almost jog given his raw speed) for 500M and simply blow Hocker away by around 10M over the final 100M. Albert Juantorena ran 44.26 for 400M (pushed) and 1:43.44 for 800M (unpushed) which may be a fair indication as to what would happen over 600M between Kerley and Hocker. David Rudisha had personal bests of 45.50 for 400M and 1:40.91 for 800M, and, in my humble opinion, even he may be hard pressed to beat Kerley over 600M at their respective peaks. Hocker has a very good kick (compared to the current crop) but I think Coe, Cram, Morceli, for starters, had more potent kicks over the last 100M, 200M and 400M. El Guerrouj and Ngeny had more than useful kicks too. I recently watched an old race over 1500M where Cram ran a tick over 51 seconds over the last 400M on a windy day. Most knowledgeable pundits would say Coe was a slightly better kicker than Cram. Hocker's not in the same league as the very best middle distance runners of the last 50 or so years.
@@Runningfree-ju9cy Interesting thoughts, thank you. Not sure I'd compare Juantorena to Fred, though. Usually you see 800m/1500m guys, whereas seeing 400m/800m combo guys is pretty rare. As a fast twitch guy who has run 9.76 for 100m, I just can't see Fred sustaining beyond 500m. Plus, he's never raced beyond 400m. If Cole runs at least 1:15 for 600m, which I think he can, he gets the W. Fred is very versatile, though, so it's not something I'd put any money on. Lol
Probably Cole Hocker for me. His 1:45 800 speed is around 26 seconds per 200, he can for sure throw down a sub 1:15 600m, as for Kerley, I don't know when his 43.6 400 was set, but if it was a long time ago then he most likely doesn't have that kind of endurance right now. If it was a 500m race, I would pobably put Cole Hocker still but it being more close.
My money is on Hocker. He's already a 47.XX guy in the 400m and Kerley doesn't have the aerobic stamina to hang on for the additional 200m, especially after spending the last few years focusing on shorter races. I actually think Kerley only wins an open 400 against Cole by ~2 seconds.
If T&F wants to expand the interest in its sport, it should vary the distances between the Olympics and the World Championships. Run the traditional events in the Olympics, but in the Worlds, replace some of the distances. So, in Worlds, instead of 800m run 1,000m; instead of 200m run 150m or 300m, instead of 1500m run 2000m; instead of 5k run 3k; add the half marathon, too.
@@zacbow8439 do you think if a sprinter like Kerley trained for 800m do you think eventually he could be competitive eventually after years? I suspect everyone runs the shortest race they could still win and only go longer if they have to but if they had to they would be just as competitive as they are in the shorter distances at least up to the 800
Kerley has a much higher top end so all he would have to do is shadow hocker the first 400 and then just kick it in the last 200. Hocker would make it interesting that last 50 but Kerley would be too far ahead.
@@WaTuR Fred's open 400m speed is probably 2 to 2.5 seconds faster than Cole's, but Fred would be toast after 500m with lactic overload. After all, he's a sprinter with almost all fast twitch. If Cole runs 600m in at least 1:15, which I think he can, I don't see Fred beating him.
I think 600 is just a bit too short for Hocker’s endurance to outperform Kerley’s 400 speed. If it was an 800 or even an odd 700m race it would be real close though.
hard one to call definitively really but i think Hocker would have the strength to do it, Kerley might get off to a good lead even without blasting it but i reckon Hocker could pull it back cos his finishes are unbelievable and that Olympic final he just smoked everybody in the last 100m
If Fred could hold on then it would be over for Hocker. I know Cole has a good kick but it wouldn’t be enough when compared to Fred’s speed. Cole would have to pull away in the first 500 in order to win. I think Fred would win but it would be close.
I would rooting for Fred, but I think anything after 300M is going deep in the well for a sprinter, and he would have to run another 300m after that which makes it tough. I know Fred's got that 400m strength but the last 200m will be tough. Meanwhile Cole would probably be ramping up the whole way. If it was a 400m I got Fred, 500m I got a tie, 600m I got Cole. However, if Fred trains for this, give him a month I'd take him but he would be doing a pretty big rewiring of his body for it, probably not worth it?
I'd pick Fred any day. Question remains in my mind... who would win in a 50m 60m or 100m, prime Ben Johnson or Usain Bolt. I think it's fair to say Usain dopes even though he has never been caught. So no "steroid" comments... prime 87 or 88 Ben vs bolt. Remember Ben set all his records in old school track shoes and the tracks are faster now. I think his 9.79 run with modern equipment turns to at least a 9.6
Hocker would win easily. Hocker can stay on Kerley’s hip and then easily pass him at the finish. Hocker could easily run the first 400 in 48 or 49 and has plenty of sprint speed as we’ve seen in the 1500. Kerley is also over 200 lbs which is not going to help in a 600. It’s not debatable. The real race between these two would be 500m. Then it’s 50/50. Even then I would bet on Hocker
If….. If Kerley just did a little bit more endurance training before this eventual competition, I think he could hold off Hooker and win. Don't think Kerley's speed would be hurt by this either. Now we have to find out Gout Gouts top speed?! With the lousy start he has o do 10.29 and 20.29?? Something tells me his top speed makes up for the lousy start
Fred Kerley by 1-2 seconds if he paces himself well...like that of a 400m female sprinter doing 48-50 seconds 400M...so a 12 to 12.5/100 ave to there...slowing to 13 and 13.5 last 200m for say 1:14.5 to1:16.5 ...Hocker does 52 plus 26 for 1:18 is my guess...maybe a slight kick on last 200m to 25 and 1:17...an edge to Kerley due to 400m advantage of 2-3 seconds after 400m and Hocker only has 200m to reel him in but only gets 1/2 to 3/4 of that gap closed.
Better race Rai vs Cole. IDK if Fred is still training the 400? Hell he has so under performed in the 200! He is the fastest 100m out of all the sub 43s. Yet his 200 results? Syd vs Athing 600!? Yeah that will never happen!

Speed wins. Unless Cole has somes hidden speed we don't know about, they'd have to run 800 to give Cole a shot.
So, in Worlds, instead of 800m run 1,000m; instead of 200m run 150m or 300m, instead of 1500m run 2000m; instead of 5k run 3k; add the half marathon, too.
would be interesting to see when a miler like Hocker would pull ahead if 600m is too short and interesting to see how long a
800 wouldn't honestly be that close. Most 1500/1600 guys, including Hocker, have or do compete at the 800
@ if 600 is close the question is where between 600-800 does Hocker pull away?
@BasicGestalt He probably comfortably wins a 700. Probably 600-650 is the range...
🎉🎉
If they run 600 on a track, do they start off the blocks or standing?
Kerley will lead up to 500m.. ..or even longer depending how Cole wish to outkick him at the end.
Kerley would win easily
800 for sure just cause it’s 60% aerobic 40% anaerobic but the 600 is 50% 50% which is much closer to the 400 than the 1500 or the 800.
I think 600 is just a bit too short for Hocker’s endurance to outperform Kerley’s 400 speed. If it was an 800 or even an odd 700m race it would be real close though.
That's a tough one, I still think Kerley would take it. Then he would run a 9.40 for the 100
Fred.
Here’s a thought, prime Rudisha & El Guerrouj in a 1200
Cole Hocker wins. He runs 1:18-1:22 600m in practice. I think he can edge out the victory
hard one to call definitively really but i think Hocker would have the strength to do it, Kerley might get off to a good lead even without blasting it but i reckon Hocker could pull it back cos his finishes are unbelievable and that Olympic final he just smoked everybody in the last 100m
Fun!
Kerley would kill any 1500m runner over 600m.
Anyone claiming the answer is obvious is a moron. This is clearly very very theoretical and ther's not much real to go on. It could go either way.
literally one of the only comments written by someone with a brain
I'd pick Fred any day. Question remains in my mind... who would win in a 50m 60m or 100m, prime Ben Johnson or Usain Bolt. I think it's fair to say Usain dopes even though he has never been caught. So no "steroid" comments... prime 87 or 88 Ben vs bolt. Remember Ben set all his records in old school track shoes and the tracks are faster now. I think his 9.79 run with modern equipment turns to at least a 9.6
World record next time I touch the 600
Lol
It would come down to the last few meters possibly.
Sprinters can't run over 400m.
I think that’s because any race over 400m starts to feel more like an endurance race than a sprint.
Fred unless they made it 666 meters.
Then it’s a toss
500 would better. They both change their races by 300 meters. That's in the middle, not 600.
I got Kerley
Kerley by 2 full seconds
Most 400m sprinters can run a fast 800m if they have the time to train for it. It would be interesting!
Hocker would dominate this, a 400 would probably be close even, doubt Fred has done any speed endurance training in years
He did a mid 44 last season so not too shabby
@ good call, I didn’t know that, guess he’s just a freak like that haha go Fred
Kipchoge can beat Noah in the 800/ however he would have problems with Josephus being a 400 specialist...
Has to be hocker. Kerley is a 100m guy now. Plus 600 is too far anyway, the middle distance guys are just different anything over 400m
Better race Rai vs Cole.
IDK if Fred is still training the 400? Hell he has so under performed in the 200! He is the fastest 100m out of all the sub 43s. Yet his 200 results?
Syd vs Athing 600!? Yeah that will never happen!
