- Learn how to download and install Cisco CML using VMware Player and Windows 11. CML allows you to create virtual Cisco networks using just your Web browser. You don't have to use a thick client or any other software - everything is included and everything is easy to use.
Cisco CML is one of your best options for CCNA, CCNP and CCIE Labs. CML has multiple advantages over other platforms such as GNS3 or EVE-NG. CML supports an HTML5 web client and contains all the Cisco IOS images. You don't have to follow a convoluted process to get Cisco images working like you do with other platforms like EVE-NG or GNS3.
You don't have to try to find images as they are all included as part of your CML subscription and by simply mapping an ISO drive to your virtual machine you can immediately start using all Cisco IOS images in your topologies. Both EVE-NG and GNS3 require that you provide your own IOS images - typically they recommend that you buy a CML subscription anyway. That means that you are already paying for CML.
CML is also an official Cisco product - that means that you don't have to worry about any gray legal issues with regards to running Cisco IOS images on your laptop. This is an official Cisco product that is supported by Cisco. By paying your yearly subscription fee of $199, you can use Cisco IOS images such as IOSv, IOSvL2, ASAv, NX-OSv and others without any worries. VIRL 2 has everything you need to get started.
Disadvantages include the requirement to license your installation. That however has been simplified dramatically from previous releases. There is also a 20 or 40 node limit in topologies. However, for most of us that is fine for a lot of labs.
Is CML better than GNS3 or EVE-NG? In many ways it is. But, all platforms have advantages and disadvantages. If you are studying for your ccie, you many prefer gns3 or eve-ng as they don't limit the number of devices in a topology like virl does. CML limits you to 20 or 40 devices - so your topologies cannot be massive like they could with gns3 or eve ng. However, if you are studying for your ccna or ccnp, cml is probably going to be more than enough.
Cisco have made massive changes to their certification programs and it is fantastic to see the new version of CML in action.

It’s incredible how just last night, I was watching your video from two years ago and wishing you had a more recent video on CML. and voila! I wake up to this. You're the best, David. I got into IT, landed a help desk position, got my ccna and now working towards the ccnp, and it's truly because of you! Thank you for all you do for this community!
You're welcome Matty! Huge congratulations on your success! Well done. Thank you for watching my videos :)
David, is this software the same with Packet Tracer but just updated software?
No, CML is much more powerful than Packet Tracer. This is actual Cisco images instead of just being a simulator like Packet Tracer. If you are studying for CCNA, Packet Tracer is fine, but is too limited for CCNP or CCIE type studies (or real world scenarios).
Yes, I am learning for CCNA from your training on Udemy and I am very satisfied. I have sometime questions when I making configures according yours videos. Where I can ask answers for my dilemmas? Yours explanations is very good and in details, but I am just a student and I am not comming from IT department, that is why I have ambiguities.
Thank you for the time, effort, and knowledge you give to the tech community.
Thank you David. Great content as always.
Hey David, as an old VIRL user I was very pleased to run across this video on your page. The video was spot on, except where I got some errors when trying to start my VM instance which was due to a couple of configuration settings in Windows Features (now very hidden in Win 11) but the community had a recent post on the issue with those instructions and then reloading a clean install of VMware Workstation Pro 16.2.4 and it worked like a charm. This is such a night and day experience difference compared to the old VIRL install and use. In fact I was just debating if I had to go with VIRL again, I would probably just plow my way through GNS3 or breack my old rack out of storage and set up my old physical server rack lab. I'm never going back.
Thanks for this. Helped me a lot in getting VMware up and running with CML.
Thank you very much for the great video. Successfully, able to install CML 2.4 by following video instructions.
Great Video, I'm up and running with 2.5 on a 2020 Macbook Pro (Intel) using Fusion 13 Pro. Thanks for the help. Now I can practice Port Activations.
How did I not know about this?! Awesome
Once again, David Bombal has struck gold with another great informational video. In my personal opinion, his videos are getting better and better as they progress. I always look forward to the new information he provides. Yes, I agree with Stefanos on the price point Cisco has placed for a single user and feel Cisco can afford to do better. It would be a better tradeoff for CISCO to open doors to new students to lower the price. Do not let CISCO fool you they can afford to make the change.
However, I feel it is always a good thing to invest in yourself and professional development. There is a return on investment in paying the fee on something that can teach you network typologies etc.
Perfect!! I was also not getting an ip address!!
Glad you've showed the solution in this video!!
Always great content! Thank you so much!
Excellent video. There were a few small gotcha settings that you addressed that were critically helpful. You have helped the world with this video. Thank you.
I was following along quite well paying attention, but that image to the left at 4:42 on Mindset with the fish was everything 😂😆! That image is Platinum!
Appreciate the step by step I & C as I will be getting CML soon and this will helps tremendously having a step by step guide!
Glad you enjoyed it! I think that poster is great :)
Really u change the life to be more understanding IT systems thank you Mr David
Thank you Ali. You're welcome!
Great video, David. I ended up purchasing CML as a result. I have used packet tracer so far. Would you consider putting a video together on how to configure CML desktops and internet access using CML? I think many would find that really handy in using the CML product. I am not finding a lot on the use, configuration and, in the case of desktops, retention of values between lab reboots. Thanks so much for all you do!
I love ur videos I've been watching for d past 1 year and it has improved my ethical hacking career
Very happy to hear that!
Thank you, David!
Thanks David!
thank you David.
regarding the network troubleshooting - I had the exact same issue.
Run virtual network editor (part of vmware) and then click change settings (requires admin).
and set the bridge mode (VMNet0) from automatic to the actual network interface you would like to use - in my case, the interface which is connected to the DHCP server. For some reason, automatic mode was selecting another interface resulting in a loopback IP. Forcing it to use the actual interface made it work as intended.
Second
Really love your videos 😍😍
Thanks aLot
Glad you like them! Thank you!
Thank you so much.
Thanks again bro
Nice man ty
I love your networking videos as always David. Have you considered making a video detailing the pros/cons of CML/GNS3/EVE-NG? I'd love to have a detailed comparison on the strengths and weaknesses of each. What unique features does each contain or lack? Other than the Node limit, are there other reasons one might choose something like EVE-NG over CML when getting further into their certification studies?
Some people prefer EVE-NG, others prefer GNS3, and others CML. I think if you are studying Cisco related stuff, CML is going to be the easiest and there are no grey areas as it is an official Cisco product. The biggest issue with CML is the cost, but you do get the Cisco images. For EVE-NG and GNS3, you can easily get images of other vendors and run them in those products, but there are issues with Cisco images.
Hi David, Thanks for your videos! Can you make a tutorial about opensource routing like quagga? And if possible some docker networking please 🙏
Thanks David, great video. If you have a subscription to CML, can you still use the images in GNS3, and which would you recommend, GNS3 or the CML?
Thanks for sharing David. I just purchased the CML 2.5. Looks like its on sale now for $169 because of Cisco live I think. Wish they would do a sale on the CCNP Enco exam. Anyway I was wondering if there are any instructions for Mac computers for this. I have 6 core intel i7 with 16 gigs of ram. Wondering if that would be good enough to run it. Thanks so much for another great video.
Thanks for this video David. Everything is well explained but i'm little bit disapointed by CML. Boot and CLI are really slow on my side and make it unusable
merci
You're welcome!
Hi David, thank you for the informative video.
Newbie here to CML and i would like to ask what is the minimum hardware requirement for CML personal?
Thank you 🙏🏽
Hello David, thank you for the video. Does CML limit to Cisco devices? I think this is a big advantage for GNS3/EVE-NG that you can import devices from other vendors - Aruba, Mikrotik, etc... And, it does not seem that CML is resource intensive - I had tested GNS3, and it requires a lot. Correct me if I am wrong.
Hi David, would you say that this is the best/cheapest/useful way for someone like me who just started studying for the CCIE EI? Thank.BIG ITALIAN FAN RIGHT HERE!
Did you try enabling mdt or gnmi ? (or query any snmp oid). In many netwoking simulation (including cisco virtual routers, containerlabs, virtual juniper/huawei devices) solutions not providing thoose technologies.
Great stuff! I've been waiting for this video thanks David
You're welcome Katlego!
Hi David, does CML allow for other vendor images such as Fortinet or would that have to be done in GNS3?
I would like to see more info on processor set up in VMWare. I have a 13th gen i7, 14 core (6 performance cores 8 efficiency cores, 20 threads) in a Razer laptop, should I select 1 processor with 8 cores? Maybe 3 processors with 4 cores totaling 12? 4 processors with 4 cores using all 16? Thoughts? Will the performance cores be selected first and used? With 1 processor and 8 cores selected it boots up 5 CSR1000v routers pretty quick but it is only using 30-40% CPU as shown in task manager.
Still good for 2.7, once you jump through all the vmware/microsoft incompatibilities in Win11. (Turn all the virtualization windows "features" off, disable core isolation in security)
Hello Sir David, is the CML the best for CCNA labs just only for cisco labs than EVE-NG?
because i want to setup a lab that only pure cisco for my ccna lab practices for my exam.
and is EVE-NG is the best for the multiple vendor like Mikrotik with Cisco Switch or Arista, Juniper or HP or any vendor not only single vendor in multiple wan environment?
What tech specifications do you suggest for the laptop to run CML?
Can you make a video with GNS3?
@DavidBombalTech I couldn't get networking to work using your instructions, but eventually found a user with similar issues in the forums. His solution, which worked for me was to start over again, but choose NAT instead of bridged initially and only after that did I boot up and start the install process. Changing to NAT after the fact did not work for some reason.
@David which CML has Meraki Cisco image for MX MS MR MV MI MT etc..
Hi David, Thanks for this amazing video :D worked just well until getting an IP address part. I've tried your way (Bridge to NAT) , powering off, restarting host device. and still no IP address at all. Is there a way I can fix this? thanks :D
Awesome video!
Two questions:
1. is it possible to add nodes from a different vendor such as Fortinet?
2. is it possible to access the GUI interface of Cisco devices such as FMC?
Thanks again.
Late reply. For your first question yes, if you're using any software besides CML. For the second one, you can get yourself vm PC and open a browser and have it connect to like a switch or whatever just be able to be routed to the FMC and then you can get into GUI interface.
Hi David, thanks for this post. I have done the installation as mentioned, but I dont see the admin user created. I deleted and tried using different user name than admin, only the sysadmin user gets created. I have posted this in CML personal community, any thoughts?
hi David, is there a solution for the M1 pro processor.?
Can I run CML on a M1 Macbook Pro? wondering if VT-x is already enabled by default.
I'm having issues connecting the CML 2.6 to the ext-conn. I can not reach my host from within my labs. I was expecting that you'd explain the firewall issue you said you'd address later within the video.
Hello,
Thanks for sharing !....
One question: How can I deploy CML in AWS ?.....I have my CML personal license but I would like to use the AWS "unlimited" resources...
Thanks in advance
Just curious to know if there is a trial/temporary version for CML? or paid version is the only way?
Hi David, I have a lot of cisco lab manuals. My biggest problems with other platforms is that the images that can be used are not the same as those used in the lab manuals. This means that in order to do a lab, I have to do a lot of tranlating of interfaces and that just makes the learning process really murky for me. I just want to be able to use the same lab image that is used in the book, so I can follow along easily and find my errors without this added layer of difficulty that using differnt images introduces. When you say, "CML supports an HTML5 web client and contains all the Cisco IOS images." should I take that to mean that I will, without any additional cost or licenscing requirements, be able to model for any platform I want? Like if my lab requires 2 Catalyst 2960s and 2 two 1941s will that be possible?
Ridiculous request, in my opinion.
@DavidBombalTech I can't find any information about it. So I might ask you, can CML run CUCM and other collab servers?
Thank you for the video, where can you get images for Aruba to work on GNS3
GNS3 have a document here with links: www.gns3.com/marketplace/appliances/arubaos-cx-simulation-software
I have the same problem, it runs with NAT and failed with bridge. How to solve this?
I have an issue getting CML to work with VMware. Would you be able to help me
GM sir, GM folks, I am trying to install CML but when I try to start the CML VM it says "Virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT is not supported on this platform.", The Hyper-V is completely disabled from the Windows features and enabled in the BIOS, the computer has a lot of resources and is W 11 any thoughts?
Got vt x enabled on bios but VMware says it’s not supported
can i use nexus switches
Hey Dave, real fast, with CML 2.6 I get through to 6:44 on your video, but I keep getting an error stating vmware player doesn't support Intel VTX/ept or "nested" virtualization. I enabled the bios and did everything else, but this has me stumpped. Any thoughts on a work-around? Many thanks!
I disabled it, and then ran it, but it keeps failing.
do cmp can run in kvm in linux
First
Thank you!
Can someone upload video - how to upgrade 2.3 or 2.4 to 2.5 ???
hi, how can I have access to the licensing?? do I need to buy something from cisco directly in order to get a contract? how does it work?? If I purchase CML will I have entitlement to download switch and router ios to use in CML??
How do you get the IOS installed into these devices?
My ISO file has a .signature extension, I can’t see it on the VM when trying to add it. The README file says I have to extract it. Not sure how. Any one can help this is the 2.6 update in 2023 thanks
how do i build a wi-fi lab in cml?
All CCSI has a free CML Personal edition free !
Hello,
My server is not showing an IP address. I configured the server to receive a DHCP IP.
When I unzip the refplat zip file it doesn't contain an .iso file. It contains two folders "node definitions" and "virl-base-images" and those folders contain .yaml files mostly and some others. HELP! And all of those files are from 2021. I have downloaded the refplat file 3 times today. Same thing everytime.
what about mac os?
How does it compare to GNS3? Better to use CML?
Both have strengths and weaknesses. CML comes with the Cisco images and is an official Cisco product. For those reasons most people that work with Cisco products will prefer CML.
Thanks Mr Bombal for this video. What are hardware requirements for using Cisco CML please ?
You can find the requirements here: developer.cisco.com/docs/modeling-labs/#!system-requirements
Is it possible to use cmd to hack a wifi network
Fell asleep twice
but how to connect with Internet ?
You can watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/-TxcYJhWjFU/v-deo.html
I'll like u to do a video on the easiest way to hack a wifi network using Android.
I know it's not easy
The price for a single user is very. Sad
It's much cheaper than trying to buy routers, switches, ASAs and other devices. But, I understand that it is expensive for many people around the world. You can use it for free on Cisco DevNet :)
If you can wait until Black Friday, they usually have a sale. I've seen it anywhere from 25%-40% off!
Agreed - Black Friday sales are great for this!
Just want to tell you one thing david..in my opinion these ridiculous small animation in the video are so annoying ..i dont know if i am the only one noticed that
Mr. Bombal, I bought this based on your recommendation, but I can't get to the website. It is running, but following what you said does not get me to the website. Any recommendations?
