David Please update 7:21, where you talk about VMware player. VMware workstation pro is now available free for personal use. It's the recommended option.
I had issues to get the vm LED go green on me. I spent hours reading about it on the gns3 community but could not get it to turn on green. I ended up uninstalling and starting fresh. The only thing I changed was after installing the GUI, I enable the gns3vm before downloading the GNS3 VM and it worked. Don't know why but I am thankful for this video. If you get a chance you may want to address that issues. I think lots of folks run into it. Regards Ben
I have tried to get this to work 2 seperate times on 2 seperate machines, and being a novice, self-taught hobbiest, I'm on the 3ed video and the errors in immediately noticed I honestly dont know how I made what i did work. Your sir are a godsend.
David, you are a legend. Thanks so much for the quality videos. BTW, I am so glad I paid for one of your courses in the GNS3 Academy, I hope to finish them soon! I train coworkers, so as an instructor I really look up to you as a role model.
I love the video but c'mon man.... tell us to shutdown GNS3 BEFORE you install VMware workstation in the video, don't tell us AFTER you install it in the video LOL... I had to redo it lol... But it's cool I got it to work. Great video my friend.

Hello, I feel lucky to have found this channel, specifically this video. It helped me a lot and clear many of my doubts. In addition, sow good practices in the management and installation of GNS3 software and its various extensions. Thank you teacher, I will follow you in your contributions in the networking community. Greetings from Peru.

Please keep doingwhat you are doing. your connents is amazing. helps us network engineers who have no clue how to setup all this virtual environment and get working on our skill set faster. Thank you so much GOD bless
If you're watching this and it's not working for you, that's because you're using VMware workstation 15, the current version. Using VMware workstation player 14 with VIX 1.17 will work. You have to navigate the vmware website to find the version 14 (its buried, but its there) and version 1.17. THEN if you're using windows 10, it'll try to tell you that you cannot use that app, so then you need to turn off windows program compatibility by shutting down the service, then reboot, and then rename the .exe for vmware player 14 (I googled instructions on how to do this, it's not hard) THEN...well, I still didn't get vmrun to ever work, so I just manually opened vmware player 14...not a huge deal to me. USING VMWARE PLAYER 15 IS NOT CURRENTLY RECOMMENDED, I found all this info on the GNS3 forums. wrmem.net/index.php/2016/03/22/gns3-vm-and-vmware-workstation-12-player-could-not-find-the-default-vm-directory/ gns3.com/community/discussion/gns3-doesn-t-work-on-vmware-play that is, as of this current date 11/10/2019. I also can't think of a different workaround for anyone using Intel, but AMD users can just use Virtual Box as it now supports nested virtualization for AMD processors (apparently doesn't work with Intel yet?)
Oh my! After browsing every site up and down this was the only comment that actually helped me get it to work! Thank you Colin for being so kind to tell us this.
David, thank you so much! works like a charm. don't need at this point spend $200/anually on vir2.0 subscription and limitations of CPT (especially in ASAs configs) are forgotten for good. subscribing.
Hi David, first of all thank you very much for the very informative tutorial. I am facing an issue as I installed everything correctly, but when I run the VMWare, it shows me this message, ``` Virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT is not supported on this platform. Continue without virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT? ``` When I click on "No", it shows "Failed to start the virtual machine". While upon clicking "Yes", it shows: ```VMware Workstation does not support nested virtualization on this host. Module 'HV' power on failed. Failed to start the virtual machine. ``` Would you mind letting me know the possible solution, please? Thanks
Was having this error too, my workaround was opening the Vmware Workstation and editing the GNS3 Virtual Machine disabling the "Virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT" feature.
HI, I had this issue in win11, turning off memory core isolation in device security fixed it for me. I don't personally like turning off security features in my machine but only that seems to be a workaround for it for now at least if you are on win 11
Just want to address, if no one has pointed this out, I am running GNS3, VMWare Fusion on Mac Os X Catalina (latest as of July 27,2020). I had an issue with GNS3 not displaying a 'green' light under the server summary for the corresponding VM. On VMWare Fusion, I went into Configure, and noticed the port was set to 80. Changed the port to 3080 and save/write those changes. This fixed my issue. It took me three hours, reinstalling everything. Googling.
Thank you for this video. You clearly explained how to set up and use the GNS3 VM with the GNS3 client. I tried setting this up on my Mac in the past, but did not understand the interoperation of the client and the GNS3 VM (using Fusion), and the instructions provided by GNS3 are not very thorough. I’ll give this a try and hopefully have success.
Thank you so much. I've been using IOU/EVE for my CCNP studies, but I kinda wanted to move to GNS3, so definitely looking forward to try this at home. Much appreciated as always David :)
Thank you so much, I’m learning tNice tutorials in quarantine and you made it very simple I really appreciate it, thank you for going over every little
Dear Sir. It is very much helping for us. I really very much happy after doing all steps instructed by you Sir. Thank you very much. May you live long and be happy. Thanks Again
Thanks David, i'm following from last six month, and now i watched this video six time and found our solution is to there is port issue with my vm showing that is 80 and doing mistake in GNS3 VM setting default was different. So issue resolved to correct port no. 80 on both GNS3 VM setting and VMware.
Hi. Interesting video. Anyway, I still haven't understood why we need to install a GNS3 GUI (and its server) on our Windows PC and a GNS3 VM in VmWare? Couldn't we run anything in VMWare and install images of devices in the GNS3 vm only? Why do I need both? Thanks
That is a clear and a fantastic tutorial, Dave. Here is my question, my intel doesn't support vt-x (advanced virtualization technology) but VT-only ( I enabled it in my BIOS). So unless I start GNS3 VM manually without vt-x and connect it with GUI, it won't start by default from GUI because the default startup requires VT-x to be enabled which I don't have on my PC. I tried to install net devices, it says KVM is not available. Is there any solution?
Hi, do you know how to resolve this problem: Error while saving settings: GNS3VM: Error while executing VMware command: vmrun has returned an error: Unable to connect to host. Error: The specified version was not found Try to run "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware VIX\vmrun.exe" -T player checkToolsState "C:\Users\Patryk Lewandowski\Documents\Virtual Machines\GNS3 VM1\GNS3 VM1.vmx" in a terminal to see more details. And make sure GNS3 and VMware run under the same user. ???
I just notice it says on the error you posted "C:\Users\Patryk Lewandowski\Documents\Virtual Machines\GNS3 VM1\GNS3 VM1.vmx" as I know the folder and vmdk name should only be "GNS3 VM". You can check this under Edit->Preferences->GNS3 VM. Under VM Name it should show GNS3 VM.
Dear David Bombal, I would like to express my appreciation for your teaching methodology and the precise instructions provided to ensure that GNS3 runs smoothly. I was wondering if you could share any resources or videos on using GNS3 and VMs for conducting penetration tests to prevent cyber-attacks. This will help for my masters final project.
Hey David, I stumbled across your videos because I've been looking for help. I followed your steps here, and I get an error stating that my eth0 isn't connected. I can fix that by manually removing the comments in the network file, but after that my VM is always greyed out and not green within the GUI. Any help would be appreciated!
@David Bombal: Thank you for the video, great Job! I will start to work with GNS3. Where can I find more details about the restrictions of Virtual box or VM Player?
Hello David - I have a question- there are two pop up I can't seem to get rif of. 1. the pop up with IP address, login in to SS.. I hit OK to that then the 2. the GNS3 Information, Channel keep poping up. I can't seem to close. Everytimr I hit OK. it keep going to the cycle... I'm dont know how to make them go away. Thank you sir!
I had an issue with installation where my Hper-V was detected as enabled by VMware although it wasn't. the issue with VMware Workstation Pro was resolved by addressing the Core Isolation/Memory Integrity setting in Windows Security. That feature can indeed conflict with virtualization software by reserving the hardware virtualization capabilities for security purposes, which can prevent other virtualization platforms from accessing them.
In case you do everything explained here and it still does not work, then you need to disable the hyperV virtualization setting. Since Windows prioritizes the hyperV over VMware and VBox.
Hi, my GNS3 VM inside GNS3 is grayed out.. its not Green.. what should I do? Please any help would be appreciated.. my VT is enabled in BIOS by the way, also in VMware.
I have stop W10 firewall, but it the same, servers summary green, but interfaces doesn't connect each over, even 3 vpcs with a switch (ping work not all the time between each other) and if I ask a router to do dhcp, vpcs take dhcp of wmnet8 not the router. What should I do ?
In my case, I've installed everything properly on linux ubuntu. But my gns3 isn't detecting the GNS3 VM aftere lots of refreshes and even after reinstalling the VM, still it's not detecting.
David excuse me, I followed the steps you gave in the video, but I don't know what is really going on and what is causing this behavior: after installing and integrating gns3 vm with gns3 gui, I see that when I run my gns3 application, gns3 vm also starts correctly but the gns3 gui control panel only identifies my local server which turns green but not my GNS3 VM. Consequence GNS3 Gui still works on my local server (i.e. my physical host) without the Gns3 Vm, but I want to resolve this issue to now run my topologies on the virtual server installed on vmware. Please help me solve this problem.
I’m running this on a surface pro 4. The vm did not load initially. Error: “virtualized intel by-c/EPT, is not supported on this platform” I had to disable this in the VM settings. And I also needed to uncheck “Hyper visor “ in windows 10. This seems to have fixed the problem.
