Such a soulful song that `brings forth emotions from deep in my soul. Its a song of yesterday and easier times. A master piece to live through the ages.

And I'm pretty sure this is the same recording that they released, which means it was a live recording with no layering or any of those other studio tricks.
Man, I dont want to sound like an oldhead but.... This is what we need in our music today, people playing real instruments, singing with pure voices in time with other humans. I love computers and the ease of music making using this technology but we need HUMANITY in our music, thats the essence of it all.
Exactly, we need music with real emotions. Every time I hear this song I go through different stages of emotions. Nowerdays music sounds nice, that's all, nice. They aren't in it with heart and soul. Only for the fame and money, not all, but a lot.
Oh Amen! And they are kind souls. The original drummer, John Hartman, was kind enough to give me an autograph. My baseball team (I was a bat girl🙄) was staying at the same motel. I have never forgotten that act of kindness. He surely didn’t have to take the time.
I agree! I want to go back too but the peace & love thing .. I think all the crazy stuff was just hidden. Nowadays we have windows into the world, all over the world .. even in homes. We see a lot more, hear a lot more & suffer a lot more for it. 😪
My Mom LOVED Michael McDonald & The Doobie Brothers... especially this song while driving when I was a kid.... I know my Mom is in heaven with my dad driving a fancy car, withn the top down listening to The Doobie Brothers. I love you Mommy and Daddy... keep driving on Heaven's Road. I love you, both.
Hello Robynsegg! How're you doing? Your comments caught my attention and that is why I am reaching out to you. Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you! It's nice meeting you here. My heartfelt Condolences
he's really just an incredible singer, and this genre of music is not really my cup of tea,but there's no denying the incredible talent of the entire band.I cannot stand hippyish type stuff, but I love everyone in the Doobie Brothers, especially MM and Patrick Simmons.Patrick Simmons is the only hippie I've ever been in love with. ADORE him.
These are some cold lyrics. He thinks he’s going to rekindle their past relationship and she’s signaling there’s no hope but he’s a fool that believes he still has a chance. Great songwriters can really capture things like this. “He never made her think twice.” Whew! 👍👍
Wow, the memories that this song brought back to a 78 year old retired American living in Thailand. It was 50 years ago that this song brought joy to me as I listened to it on my battery powered Sony cassette player in my portacamp room in New Guinea after a 12 hour day of welding pipelines in the rain and mud of the jungle. Dreaming of my monthly 2 weeks off in Bangkok as a single 28 year old man. "THOSE WERE THE DAYS".
@@kennetharntson5912 oh yeah those were the days! You really hit me when you said battery powered Sony cassette player. I’m 76 and was a crazy extreme skier. I played The Doobie Brothers on a Sony Walkman while flying down the bumps on an almost vertical ski slope. Thanks so much for those crazy memories of when I was a crazy girl on skis 🥰🥰😂😂😂🤪🤪😳😳😀😀
@@wtmcgowindamn right!!! Understanding the lyrics gives the song a whole mother level of awesome because we all have been in the shoes of the man in the lyrics
Way back in the day, McDonald was a first call studio musician so playing 2 keyboards at the same time would not be much of a problem for him. However, this song is especially difficult for keyboardists to play since the tricky piano riffs with tricky hand positions are constant throughout right to the end. And then he's still able to add in synth/strings keyboard in the left hand while playing the tricky right hand riffs *AND* singing it perfectly. That's some serious talent.
The lyric alone manages to be a masterpiece of situational imagery :"she musters a smile for his nostalgic tale" as well as being profound commentary on human behaviour: "never coming near to what he wanted to say" "What seems to be - is always better than nothing" never mind the tune, the lead vocal, the harmonies the groove!
Michael Jackson sang back up on this incredible song. He is not credited on the album. But, the word is he did. Guess he might have been pretty busy in 1979. 🤣🤣
I'm still listening in 2023 and will be listening for as long as I can. There's nothing like Michael McDonald and The Doobie Brothers. Love ❤️ them all!
@Officialmichaelmcdonald0009 There was SO SO SO much incredible music back then. Just finished listening to Linda Ronstadt and Crosby Still & Nash. Doobies are always right there in my mind too. I saw you guys in Cedar Rapids Iowa of all places back in the 70s (I was there from Los Angeles for a work project and you guys were performing that weekend and I was able to come up with a ticket - AMAZING concert!) Thanks for all your great work and I would still come see you playing live!
I know that McDonald is trending now with MAX’s Yacht Rock doc and the memoir just published but this song is incredible. Like many on this thread, fond memories as a kid hearing this in the car and the store and my mother singing along as if she were in the band. And now my kids listening to it at full volume in the living room. Lol. It’s really a timeless piece of music. The more you listen to it, the more you realize how much is going on. Truly a prefect song!
I remember listening to this song, I was a teen, and didn’t know much English, but I remember how happy this song used to make me feel. Still love it, and now I know the lyrics!!
Being a drummer, I have got to give it up for him. He plays exactly what this song calls for....straight ahead, let the vocals, keys and organ shine. Put 10 drummers in the studio on this one and you'd have 10 totally different grooves and I can almost guarantee half would over play. If I sat down to play this, I would definitely have been much busier but this is absolute perfection for groove. Simple, straight ahead and no fluff. The level of talent in the Doobie's is off the charts, always has been and each of the players are masters at their craft, playing exactly what the song calls for, nothing more and that's why I think it's perfect.
txdrummer5150 What I find incredible about the Doobies is that they always had two drummers playing on their concerts. You can see them both here (Keith Knudsen and John Hartman) plus Bobby LaKind on congas, all playing in remarkable sync. Always loved the dual drummer rhythm section.
At least you have good taste even though born in the 90s. Actually the grunge music from the 90s was also awesome, the groups were amazing, but all that sort of music is gone ... replaced with the garbage pop music of today. Once in a rare while I will hear a song as soulful this that, but never as amazing as What a Fool Believes. Thank you Mike McDonald.
What is really special, you guys, is learning how Michael came on with the Doobies. The Doobies have a tremendous rockumentary, called "Let the Music Play", it chronicles their career. The band members talk a ton in it, so it is special. Also, their manager Bruce Cohn talks, and producer Ted Templeman. These men are very special, and have a bearing that is so interesting. What I learned, is that the Doobies were bad ass going in to the late 70's. They were HUGE. And then front man Tommy Johnston got sick. Tommy is such a great guitar player, but also was a super soulful singer kind of like Michael. Tommy and rhythm guitar player/singer Pat Simmons were the heart of the Doobies. I didn't know them back then, I was getting in to the beginnings of 80's British metal & American hair metal, lol. But I learned about this in Let the Music Play, about a year ago. Tommy couldn't sing, they were fucked. They went on a little bit with just Pat singing, but Pat knew that wouldn't last. Just a bit previously, the Doobies added a guitar player, Skunk Baxter, who had gotten fired from Steely Dan. Well, when Tommy went down, Skunk said "Hey, I know this guy who came in to the studio and did backing vocals with Steely Dan - Michael McDonald". Songs like Peg, and maybe another one I think. Well, the guys said "Ok", and Michael flew out for an audition. The guys flipped.Out. Incredible Doobies bass player Tiran Porter took an immediate liking to Michael, and invited him over to his house, where he had a studio in his basement. In the basement, Michael unveiled his keyboard driven pop groove, sang 3 songs that he had written and were in his back pocket, and Tiran, a veteran of several Doobies tours, flipped the fuck out. Tiran recorded a tape, and took it to the guys. They were already very happy with Michael, because he swooped-in and saved their butts by coming out and singing Doobies songs without Tommy, and saved their huge tour. But they had no idea he could write songs. They just met him! At that point, Michael was a hired gun. Maybe one and done? Well......then it came time to introduce Michael to legendary producer Ted Templeman. Pat said "Mike, play one of your songs for Ted". Michael was nervous, and said "Well this song isn't really finished". Pat said "Go ahead". So Michael started, and he played Taking It to the Streets. Bumm.... bummm bumm..."You don't know me but I'm your bROTHHER"..and Ted's eyes popped out of his sockets and his mouth was agape. In front of him, was a young Michael McDonald, who Ted later called "The most talented musician I ever sat with in the studio". And thus....the Michael McDonald era was born :) Magic. History. Beauty. Excellence.
Do you know why skunk was fired from steely Dan? Or do you mean he was just hanging around doing some session work? I adore his solo on how do the fools survive
@@adambutterfield2307 Hi Adam. I think I may have gotten it wrong on Skunk being fired. I think he said "fired" in the rockumentary, but that might be want he wanted to say at that point. Since then, he has said he "left". He gave a reason: "I felt that the direction that Steely Dan was headed was much more of a studio and not live-oriented in concept. I think Walter and Donald wanted to carry the studio concept to its “nth” degree. I joined the Doobie Bros because I felt that there was an incredible amount of raw talent and had a bit of a vision of what that band might become. When I asked Michael McDonald to join the Doobie Bros, I felt that vision turn into a reality."

Michael McDonald's voice is nothing less than a gift from whoever created this universe. I could listen to him sing Gregorian chant, nursery rhymes, Tuva throat singing, or a complete reading of the New York City registry of deeds ... it doesn't matter what he's saying or singing. All that matters is the *sound* of his voice that has been so special. Nobody has ever had a voice like his. Although, if I were forced to find a similar voice, I might suggest Mel Torme. They both had/have voices that are supremely velvety.

I'm a Dec 1979 baby....I love this since a toddler. Me standing up dancing in my mom's car!!!🤣 pre carseat yrs. She said I liked the hey 19 song too!
Yes! I agree! ❤
I was born in 1953 and I love the Doobies
Once played this song 27 times in a row to help me with an issue I was having with my wife. I felt so alone, and unhappy. This song helped me to cry and let it out instead of bottling it up. Such a soulful song that `brings forth emotions from deep in my soul. Its a song of yesterday and easier times. A master piece to live through the ages.
Hoping you resolved your issue😊

It's got to be done!
My son is now 23 and I remember he was obsessed with this song as a teenager. I am so proud I introduced him to great music.
How many bands are this deep in talent? The level of musicianship, the quality of the vocals, how tight they are, absolutely amazing!
I never even knew what a Doobie was! Then I wised up.

none at all for decades

TOUCHE'!!!!!!
Oh Amen! And they are kind souls. The original drummer, John Hartman, was kind enough to give me an autograph. My baseball team (I was a bat girl🙄) was staying at the same motel. I have never forgotten that act of kindness. He surely didn’t have to take the time.
Words to live by. ❤

What a beautiful song, the music and chorus is so harmonious it's truly special. I still love it 45 years later, Damn! (Nov 2024).
Still loving this 44 years later. The older I get, the more I want to go back in time, to that era of peace and love.
I’m hearing you bro
At least you got to witness it. Everyone wants to be younger but I wish I was older, wish I was apart of this era. Peace.

I agree! I want to go back too but the peace & love thing .. I think all the crazy stuff was just hidden. Nowadays we have windows into the world, all over the world .. even in homes. We see a lot more, hear a lot more & suffer a lot more for it. 😪

His vocal range astounds me
He has a strong falsetto.
Amazing
he's really just an incredible singer, and this genre of music is not really my cup of tea,but there's no denying the incredible talent of the entire band.I cannot stand hippyish type stuff, but I love everyone in the Doobie Brothers, especially MM and Patrick Simmons.Patrick Simmons is the only hippie I've ever been in love with. His voice and The Doobie Bros take me back to the happiest times in my life and youth . I am 72 and still feel all the way to my soul
These are some cold lyrics. He thinks he’s going to rekindle their past relationship and she’s signaling there’s no hope but he’s a fool that believes he still has a chance. Great songwriters can really capture things like this. “He never made her think twice.” Whew! 👍👍

I'm going to see them in concert this June. Can't wait. The music of my young adulthood.
Those certainly were the days, my friend... And this music keeps these days happier....
2 weeks on, 2 weeks off? Not too bad man. I bet there was a lot of fun to be had in Bangkok too. Those do sound like "the days".
@@kennetharntson5912 oh yeah those were the days! You really hit me when you said battery powered Sony cassette player. I’m 76 and was a crazy extreme skier. This song makes me feel so good
He's singing, playing piano and synthesizer all at the same time.
That's some feat.
The man's a musical genius...one of a kind
Lots of practice
That's how it was done back in the day.
Sorry Its Tom He Is The Doobie .Dont Like This Guy ,
Way back in the day, McDonald was a first call studio musician so playing 2 keyboards at the same time would not be much of a problem for him.
The lyric alone manages to be a masterpiece of situational imagery :"she musters a smile for his nostalgic tale" as well as being profound commentary on human behaviour: "never coming near to what he wanted to say" "What seems to be - is always better than nothing"
never mind the tune, the lead vocal, the harmonies the groove!
Absolutely perfect comment - you totally nailed it. Nice to know now & then someone 'hears' things exactly the same way you do. Cheers, mate!
For me this song perfectly describes Limerence...
Agree totally , there songs...and then there are SONGS

Michael McDonald's voice was stratospheres above past, present, and future vocalists. And I have been a thrash fan since 82.

And now my kids listening to it at full volume in the living room. Lol. It’s really a timeless piece of music. The more you listen to it, the more you realize how much is going on. That’s what I was raised on. It’s why later loved R&B, funk and hip hop. What a contribution we owe from our black musicians 🙏🏻
And our white ones.
I remember my mom listening to this on her stereo when I was a kid in the late 80s. I came to appreciate it more as I grew up.
I remember listening to this song, I was a teen, and didn’t know much English, but I remember how happy this song used to make me feel. Still love it, and now I know the lyrics!!
Millions people still listen this beautiful song.
Good music never die!
Forever in my hert. Bring me good memories.

We dont get music like this no more... Such master piece
I am, almost 66 years old, love this song, timeless.❤

And thus....the Michael McDonald era was born :)
Magic. History. Beauty.

I’ve loved MM voice since I was a youngster amazing at 56 still loving it now
Michael McDonald's voice is nothing less than a gift from whoever created this universe.
I’ve recently discovered this song. I haven’t stopped listening to it, there’s just more and more to appreciate about it with every replay.
