Lyrics:
It's hard to start things over
You can feel the fire around us
All the time, yeah
If you're reading this, you have incredible taste in music. Long live Alice in Chains.
Forever in souls
Alice in Chains is fucking awesome
One of the greatest bands ever
Long live AIC
That's what I like to think too! Great Minds.....😉
Layne = King of the yeahs
YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHH.... YEAH!! HYEAAAAHHHAAAHAHAH OWWWWWWWOWWOW YEAHAAAHAHAAAHHHHH!!! - Layne Staley (best part is I get more from those yeahs than any other bands entire lyrical output)
Umm James is pissed now😬
@@someperson917
James Hetfield < Layne Staley.
YEAH!!
Jerry & Layne = King Of The Grungy Yeahs
I absolutely love the transition from the more psychedelic guitar tone in the verses to the straight up sludge metal perfection in the chorus. That and the best harmony in hard rock/metal history between Layne and Jerry.
Layne and Jerry, Dave/Sammy, Ed, and Michael, and Freddie, Brian and Roger, the best harmonies to ever exist.
David Matheny you said it all!😊
Yesss, I miss this time soo much, was a great time to be alive !!!
More of a middle eastern string
Will you stop calling it metal you bone 🦴 head
I'd come home from high school and stuff like this would be playing on MTV like no big deal. That was life...had no idea I was growing up in the most badass time for music. Anyone have a time machine?
Right? Take me back to that time, but make me a little older because I was a little kid then
It's ok its in our nature to take things for granted. I just wish I would had been a teenager then I would have loved it. My teen years people loved lil wayne and tpain and watched Jersey shore... talking about some shitty years.
I was a teenager then. You’re SO right about taking things for granted… cause I did. I think a lot of us did. Looking back now with today’s music(not all, but most), yeah, hindsight man…
I often think about this, I remember at that time thinking what will ever top this . Nothing ever has . Music is truly washed up and has been for more than a decade . Nothing will ever top that time we were lucky we got to experience it ,
@@patmannella2110 very true. As a music lover I would like to think something that special will come along again but in my heart of hearts I believe your right that nothing will ever top that place in time ever again.
Jerry Cantrell is probably the most overlooked musician in the last 25 years. So underrated.
Trust me as a guitarist he gets many props.
mikdre Hardly any at all.
Agree, I saw them in 2018 and Jerry sounded awesome, way way better voice than DuVall tbh. Layne had "the power" where as DuVall really has to dig deep and still comes up short. Just my worthless opinion of course.
Please *stop* all this crap about Jerry Cantrell being underrated, these kind of comments are on almost every single AIC video. He is a multi millionaire who has had a very successful career for 30 years both as a solo artist and with AIC, and he is revered by his peers.
How exactly is that underrated, dumbass?
@@paulph12002 There's all the Layne dick riders thats a start. He's underrated by the rock audience not by his peers or collegues. He was one of the panel judges for Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists of all time so its not like they don't recognize his legacy. He aint underrated by other musicians just by music listeners.
In my opinion the best band of the 90s
Don't think any band can capture or play haunting music so beautifully as Alice In Chains
Yeah they were way better than nirvana, I like nirvana too but AIC are way better musicians.
ALICE, PANTERA, WHITE ZOMBIE! ...
Nirvana, Megadeth. Guns N Roses. Stone temple pilots, Smashing pumpkings.
90s were great in general honestly. AIC, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Megadeth, Pantera, Guns 'n Roses Metallica's Black Album and Dream Theater. There was just so much damn good rock and metal music.
Probably the most underrated AIC song.
Overlooked even. Hidden gem 93
True
Yup, most bands would have it front a centre. AIC you’ve got to go looking for it
i agree
@@rottenapple_ damn dude i saw you on some other AIC related video keep listening!
The fact that AIC survived the death of Layne is a testament of how important Jerry Cantrell is to music.
FACTS
I was more fond of him than Layne. Even on this clip.
Nope
Define "survived." Patriots "survived" without Tom Brady. The Jacksons "survived" without Michael. A cockroach "survives" without its head. Cantrell's great...but c'mon. Layne was the Main Chain.
Don't forget Sean Kinney
People just don't know how important Jerry Cantrell is....this guy is a living legend
I do...believe me
Brilliant songwriter. As a guitarist, he's not flashy at all. Sure there are other guitarist who are better - technically better - but Jerry is able to edit himself to know exactly what the song needs just right. His solo on Nutshell remains my favorite to this day. Its simple but he pours out his heart on that solo and every solo for that matter. Also really good vocalist who's gotten better with age and experience.
pure genius. Cantrell is my god.
Amazing music writer
Totally Agree.....
Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell what a fuckin combo!!
RSK 519 Don't forget about Mike Inez and Sean Kinney!
The best
Sometimes I forget about this song because it's not on their studio albums. Then I remember it and get the rush of listening to it again after a long time.
A Little Bitter is really awesome as well. It also seems to be overlooked.
me too , love this song and AIC
same here...I forget about this little gem (Haven't heard it in like 25yrs), it still gives me Goosebumps when listening while stoned. Man, no one cranks out tunes like this anymore. Those doward chords and echoing riffs....badass😎😂👍😊
I never forget this song mainly because I think it’s one of the best riffs ever it’s so damn addicting. Whole song is amazing, Jerry is a god tier songwriter
90s movies had the best soundtracks
is everyone gonna ignore that groove that sean kinneys got going on this song? problem one of the most underrated drummers ever. the mans got chops.
I love Sean Kinney 🥁 totally awesome drummer!! ❤️🤘✌️
You're absolutely right 💯
Watching the mopop cover of this song really made me appreciate how much of an impact he has on this song
I'm a bass player and I always appreciated Sean grooves, he's really underrated
he is great, but what's even greater is he perfectly fits the band with his style
Layne's eye-rolling is another one of his trademarks... :D
and the yarl...nobody yarled like Layne
And that beautiful eyebrow raise! ... (be careful not to impregnate anybody with that move)
Melinda Stubleva everything about him was mesmerizing!
"Yeahhhhhhh"
Everyone is starting to do it now. Dissociation. Layne will always be in my blood. My eldest son Zakk (Wilde) Layne McAndrew, was meant to be. Love all you A.I.C. fans
That middle eastern-esque riff is so infectious.
Joe Tomasso - That's it! Well put.
YES YES!!!!
C Hall
It's phriggin gnarly...
Ikr, first time I did weed I heard this song and felt the riff in my fucking blood, sounded slow and really psychedelic, my ears were in another dimension. it was a really magical moment.
It's like the riff is giving my soul a tour through hell....
Layne and Jerry had the best dynamic ever. Their voices fit together so well, creating such a unique sound. Long live AIC
I sometimes wasn't sure which one was singing
Every time layne and jerry sing “it’s hard to start things over” I get massive chills.
i can repeat that part over and over and over, same happens with Them Bones, feels like being part of it, standing next to Layne and Jerry, singing along with them . (I wish) ... wauw....
After 20 years this still sounds fresh. Still my favorite band.
.
Something I should say.
I have been listening to them all my 20 years of life...
22 yrs same here
Agree.I have 24 uears old and AIC would be forever in our hearts.Thank you Layne for your existence.
You can't sound like a tortured soul if your soul's not tortured. Dude could wail
The ironic thing is he actually is being tortured. Burning alive for eternity.
Happy Birthday Layne Staley 8/22/2023 FOREVER REMEMBERED AND NEVER EVER FORGOTTEN 😇💝🌹
Layne is the most wonderfull vocalist since the world have vocalists 💙🤘
How nasty, unique is Jerry Cantrell's guitar style
He definitely puts some stank on it.
A truly very gifted savant guitarist..
So unique, original, dark infectious half-step down guitar tone and style. The best guitarist out of that entire era of music & Washington State next to Jimi Hendrix. Cantrell can't write or play a bad song on a guitar.. o;)
The guitar on the chorus has to be Cantrells heaviest tone ever.
It is so heavy, and cantrell has made so MANY different tones too
pull through.,,,hit the note and pull let vibrate ,,,do the same for vicarious for Tool
Sean Kinney is a badass drummer. He plays to the song and puts his stamp on it. Nobody is ever going to mention him as one of the greatest drummers but that's what makes him so good. He is perfect in this song. Nobody could play this like him.
For sure. Kinney is very unique, has interesting beats
No one, i repeat no one can get the hi hats right on Would after all these years. Go listen and compare it to every cover out there. Amazing drummer indeed
Really nice guy, met him at The Central when Alice opened up for Tora Tora. Just sitting at the bar having a beer.. Alice blew them away. They couldn't play their set fast enough to get the hell out of Seattle lol... Good Times !!
Yess his drumming really good always thought that
IKR, I really think Sean is one of the best drummers of the 90’s 👌
This guitar riff is fucking sick. Just wow....
This has such an eerie, machine-like, spookiness to it. AIC was always so different. In a category all by themselves.
Everyone mentions Layne, Jerry and Sean (very deservingly so), but no one mentions the man behind the low end - Mike Inez delivers!
People that didn't acknowledge the importance of the whole band didn't really "listen" to them. Classic AIC was basically a trio and Mike knew how to anchor it without being just a root thumper. Imho, right up there with Michael Anthony.
Inez is the man, nothing against Starr but they upgraded getting Inez and he had a major impact on jar of flies, much bigger impact than Starr had on any AIC project
Yeah....Jerry ended up doing the intro to would cause Mike couldn't get it right
Shit I love I love Mike inez bass playing skills hell yeah!!
@@puppetmaster8551 that's all your opinion, not rooted in fact at all but what is provable is that Starr played a role in the band hitting the big time; hitting the big time in music is as likely as winning powerball and every band member who was there helped work a miracle.
Shit, I love this fuckin' band.
The same here man. Adicted to them and it's not so bad...
Daniel Carneiro fuck yea
same here...addicted for 27 years...
u love the death
Daniel Carneiro watch Layne this song in Netherlands at the Ahoy...he is acting really u Layne like...but gives a stellar performance

"love hate love" "sunshine" "confusion"
I always liked Layne Stanley's singing but I bet even Layne would agree that his friend and former tourmate, Phillip H. Anselmo is a far better singer with a much better range. However, taste is subjective.
Jim Garrison
Its all about how you feel at the moment as well. Jack Black said Led Zeppelin was the best rock and roll band of all time. And then he elaborated. "Better than the Beatles. Better than the Rolling Stones." Who's the best is definitely a personal thought or opinion. Sometimes I say Anselmo is the best. Other times Rob Halford. Other times Layne and still other times Chris Cornell. But Layne can belt out a tune. And its in his own style. Hard to compare to others in a way. But I think Halford has/had the best voice in all of rock and roll.
Soundgarden an Alice in chains were un fucking real
AIC always be number 1
@@duncan3998 Alice In Chains was way better than nirvana lol
@@duncan3998 who cares about the ranking and stats lol Alice In Chains was super underrated,
Why can't people just enjoy both bands instead of debating which is the best grunge band? Both bands have many amazing albums. Nirvana was the head of the movement and probably the one who introduced the genre to us all. AiC was the most soulful, relatable and artistic band. Nirvana and Alice In Chains were fans of each others' music, and Kurt Cobain had phrased his admiration for Layne Staley, many times. Why can't the fans do the same thing? Long live grunge.
@@h96573 grunge was a label that subpop basically manufactured to market all the Seattle bands. Most of these bands don’t sound anything like each other anyways. And for the record, the first band from Seattle to “make it big” was Soundgarden in 1989 with louder than love. That was the first album that got signed to a major label. There’s a great documentary called Hype that goes deep into the Seattle scene. There were two waves of bands, the first being in the late 80s with bands like Soundgarden, Green River, Mudhoney, Melvins, Tad, and Skin Yard. The second wave in the early 90s was the mainstream recognition with bands like Nirvana, AIC, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam.
Alice in Chains could hit you with either megaton atomic bombs or delicate flowers and everything in between. Staley and Cantrell's harmony was unique and truly beautiful.
Best harmony ever in my book...R.I.P. LAYNE STALEY...much love much respect to all of you...what's up Jerry Cantrell...

No joke man I've had to restart so many times in my life
Layne foresaw the future
I think it is so freaking awesome how the age of AIC fans ranges from early teens to people pushing 70! ( yes I know several old hippies into them ). I am about the age of Jerry...and it just does not freaking matter. Layne lives on forever in our hearts. And thank God for Jerry and the guys. keep rocking...

Layne Staley will never be replaced, in eternity
He was a legend, and there will be no one like him ever again (in our lifetime)
The most dark and depressing band to come out of Seattle. Legends.
The mesh of minor and major keys is genius
no doubt. AIC could write a strong chorus
Indeed :)
Cantrell is no slouch.
I know I'm late as shit, but the beauty of "power chords" is that they only consist of the root note and a perfect 5th above that root note; without playing the third note of the triad (which determines whether it carries a minor or major tonality) you can get away with some pretty nifty mode mixture, which is something AIC did a lot.
+Nolan “Granolan” Richardson All Alt Rock, Hard Rock and Metal bands do it....you can use 4ths too which I use in certain songs...I love mixing modes ex. Dorian Verses, Aeolian or Harmonic Minor Chorus and Phrygian Bridge orrrr modulate Dorian Verses, Mixolydian Chorus....the possibilities are endless.
Alice n Chains is like a drug you can't kick.
Alice in Chains*. Alice N' Chains was a different lineup
pretty funny considering.
And dont want 2 either
With a bit of STP
I listened to Dirt for around 18 months
Solid! Back in 92/93. Not kidding. I lived those songs in real life. I should not have survived those days. Early 20's and I was never expected to reach 30.

Jerry Cantrell is incredible. Layne, he is unmatched. We all miss you buddy.
Another great example of why Jerry Cantrell was crowned Riff Lord.
Alice in Chains, how can one band kick so much ass? The raw carnage that is Alice in Chains. Layne Staley will live in rock n roll forever and eternity.
Tyler Taws: "Raw Carnage" -- oh my god, so perfectly said. Layne just tore into himself and spewed it out, with no apologies or inhibitions. Thank fucking god for Layne and AIC.

Kinney is a beast of a drummer and at the same time I have never loved the drum fills, grooves, ect than I do his...even on the unplugged he just nails it!
I don't think there's anyone else who hated themselves so much during their lifetime that withered away, who was later missed and loved so much by so many, he had no idea... as brilliant as he was.... no idea man... R.I.P. Layne
I think that is why a lot of brilliant people like Layne turn to drugs. Unfortunately, life was just too boring for him unless he was shooting up. And "Dirt" was a masterpiece, but an eerie foreshadowing of his fate.
4thandinches.... I agree with the first comment. but don't forget that the life has been brutal with him...mother with drugs problems...homeless after...he had pretty hard life personally. and plus from an addict point of view that I was...the addiction drive you to say never again...but you more say that.. you more are into it. socialdef3 I think it has to do with over exposure... and they find a way through downers to come down from all the lights, people, fame, constant loud music, and beyond. It's just too much, and most get away, die alone with drugs in their system that deal with the chronic anxiety of it all.

They made such unique songs, there's nobody like them
You're an idiot. They stole their sound from King's X and Layne Staley admitted it. He even told dUg Pinnick that he can't wait for the next King's X album to come out so he can steal from them again and once chased Jerry Gaskil down a street just to tell him how much he loves King's X.
@@liquidbraino Kings X sounds way more like Power Metal than this does,I think they were probably being to hard on themselves. Kings X obviously sort of vibbed off of Symphony X etc, whereas Alice in Chains is really morelike a mix of Psychedelica and Country Music at its core.
@@liquidbraino Nirvana did rip off most of there song from other bands, but just because you can name off all the times Nirvana were hacks and you know about more underground bands doesn't really say anything about AiC. They were very-much separate projects.
The Truth from San Andreas
Johnny lol true and Alice In Chains them bones was on San Andreas.
AIC is truly one of the most credible bands in modern rock
My favorite so called GRUNGE band. I don't care what they are classified as they just rock!
Alice in Chains never disappoints. Why weren't they more appreciated back in the day? They deserved it more than anyone, in my opinion.
Because money is infinitely appreciated, not all great artists generate money with their great art, the art needs to fill a great social culture function and be positive or at least redeeming. Therefore they would actively avoid the spotlight. Alice was really bemoaning but redeeming in the pride of bad fate.
From someone who saw them many times in the early 90s, they were just about to right after Jar of Flies came out and they were set to hit the road sandwiched between Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies for the Shit Hits the Shed tour in 1994 when they had to bow out because of Layne Staley's drug addiction. After that shows became more and more scarce for them.
People did give them attention, imo. I think whatever higher being knew if they were bigger than maybe Layne would have deteriorated faster. He didn't like the media that much. That's what Grind is about.
They were by ME!!
They had a few multi platinum albums in america so they did just fine. If you were talking about say the Melvin's or Skin Yard who were doing this stuff when AIC were a glam band then fair enough
Easily one of Alice’s most powerful choruses.
The riff and drum vibe..

Still my favorite band.
Unmatched today.
I always got a special feeling from AIC's songs, and when i listen all these years later they still take me back where i can recall those feelings and moments -- just me in the car singing my lungs out to the band on the radio, or at home on the stereo -- saturating my psyche and soul in Layne's unique vocals and Jerry's perfect guitar, and the smooth unison of the band. What a pair they were. Miss Layne so much.

Definetely!
yup, one of their best.
Yeah, I'm a fan of AiC's more bare-bones, genuine songs like this, Nutshell and No Excuses. Their heavier metal stuff is awesome, but these songs are more powerful imo.
Yes I love this
I'd classify this song as part of their "heavier metal stuff." I mean sure it's not the heaviest thing in the world but this is Alice in Chains we're talking about, not Napalm Death or Cannibal Corpse.
Alice In Chains is the greatest band in the history of rock and roll. Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Starr, and Sean Kinney. Layne might be the greatest singer to ever step on planet earth but it’s truly the band in general all giving in on that iconic AIC sound. They are the kind of band you don’t have to know of or have ever heard of before in your life for one of their songs to come on and go “this is Alice In Chains”. You’ll just know when it’s them. These guys are incredibly. Best band hands down the board isn’t even close to these guys.
U forgot Mike Inez he played bass in all AIC songs after Dirt was released

I love how Layne's eyes roll back I know EXACTLY how he feels.
Layne the amasing
voice and Seann the
drums .
Jerry don't get enough credit as a rock n roll legend his riffs song writing and his voice is amazing
i agree
Cantrell's riffs are so fuckin sick
I really hope one day they will be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame
Next year will be 20th year anniversary of Laynes death. Would be fitting wouldn’t it?! Kurt got his in 2014. Give Layne his in 2022.
Best rock/Metal band in the 90's , best rock/metal singer of all times.
What a masterpiece....
Thanks so much AIC for voicing our anger, anguish, suffering, desperation, depression, loneliness, numbness, emptiness, pain, eagerness, sickness and too many other feelings to mention .Even though I've never taken drugs the problems I've been experiencing certainly are a living hell...singing your songs at least allow me to feel some comfort and relief... can always relate to you...peace to you my friends...
Well said my friend
This music is meant to trap you in those fears that you are dealing with!!!I also grew up on these bands and can sing along with most songs but then the LORD showed me what’s behind the veil that they use to distort our reality and it’s very DEMONIC my friend!!!I am still blown away about what I have seen and it’s with every rock band and most 80’s music like Phil Collins per say!!!If you slow down the speed you can see them distort or should I say shape shift right in front of you, there hands mostly look like monster hands and there eyes are always black or blacked out and for what reason????Everything they sing about is about Satan or destruction, casting spells, black magic is being performed right in your very face and you can’t tell they are doing it because it’s done so clever and nobody ever wonders why they pan the scenes so quickly!!!’Theu always have to keep moving or there artificial JIN will have distortions so that’s why people on television are always moving there hands heads eyes etc....It’s pretty freaky when you start to recognize what I’m telling you but look for yourself!!!!NIRVANA IS DEFINITELY CREEPY AS HELL!!!!Ask GOD for wisdom and eyes to see and he will lift the veil for you and you will forever be a changed MAN!!!!KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT BROTHER AND TURN AWAY FROM THESE DESTRUCTIVE FORCES BECAUSE THEY WILL KEEP YOU DOWN!!!Why do you think they all overdose and die???because you will relive old memories and they will keep you down in a low vibration!!!GOOD LUCK!!!
@@sonnyspawn4435 Wow. You're completely nuts. Do you come onto these videos just to spread your "wisdom"? Is that really the best idea you can come up with? Were you just sitting around one day and you thought "I know, I'm gonna change the world one youtube comment at a time!". "Meant to trap you in the fears you're dealing with,"? That statement describes Christianity much better than the music you're chastising.
@@sonnyspawn4435 Only the weak minded bafoons think this music is meant to trap you in these fears. Bands like AiC and many others saved my life in my darkest times, in which I saw ZERO signs of your God. I was at my lowest point virtually overdosed on meth, and no signs of God anywhere to help me recuperate myself. Instead all that was there for me was the people I love and my music. So please take your opinions elsewhere or keep them to a point that they don't bash on what other people consider lifesaving. Just because you were too weak minded to believe songs that speak on the darker of thing are meant to entrap you in such things, doesn't mean other people share you ignorant opinion.
All I'm Gunna say is Amen Brothers, and I'm totally with both sides of these comments but AIC makes me feel better during my struggle ATM, because I'm aware of all the dark sides of music and the satanic elite global shit. Anyway RIP Layne m mike, Cantrell legend, Shaun a unique understated underated drummer IMHO. AN "YEAAAAAH, MY COMMENTS OVER NOW" HA HA
The face before me flies
Laughs at me inside
Masks are made to hide the glow
Shining eyes
Distance 'tween us grows
Feeding lies
It's hard to start things over
You can feel the fire around us
All the time
Yeah
Something I should say
It takes you every day
What you give is not alive
Today
Your soul served on a plate
Throw it away
It's hard to start things over
You can feel the fire around us
All the time
Yeah
It's hard to start things over
Oh yeah
You can feel the fire around us
All the time
Yeah
It's hard to start things over
Oh yeah
You can feel the fire around us
All the time
Yeah
All the time
What the hell have I?
Little pride
The sound of my generation. I'm a drummer and was playing with my band for a living in the early 90's. I was surrounded by music and this was the theme music!!! Good times! I'd do it all over
I love Layne's facial expressions and their use of video with a different facial expression superimposed onto the original. Amazing conceptual video work.
3:11 That "Yeah" always give me chills.
What the Hell have I? Been asking that question for a while now....
Patrick The Apostate Same..
What the hell have I sounds a whole lot like a few lines from Sickman, i always though that this song was some sort of continuation of sickman in a way, idk.
Too think this was a hair metal band when they first started, I'm glad they changed there ways
All my life
Jerry Is a fking beast..omg..best duo of this fking world..ever!
00:17 When you're awesome and you know it.
Jerry Cantrell = Riff GOD!!
Pisceas legend along with Chuck and Kurt
Words cannot describe how much I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last Action Hero is such an underrated movie. The soundtrack alone was friggin' awesome. And it's got 2 AIC tracks!
Didn't know that but good to know
Gone 20 years ago today. You're fight is over, man. Rest easy.
