"It seems you prophesized, all of this would end..." the words ring true for Layne. AIC is no longer built on the pain of addiction, but of the pain of loss. Making this album all the more amazing and remorseful.
I couldn't imagine trying to sing this song in the studio. I heard Jerry became rather ill while recording this album. Lots of emotion in there. I applaud them for picking up the pieces and continuing to write. Layne was lightning in a bottle and can never be replaced. But I think they found a good brother in William. That dude can sing!
Cantrell once again proves that he is the master of simple, stripped down solos that elicit unbelievable emotion without playing a thousand notes. In an interview once with Dimebag Darrell, Dime mentioned Jerry as being one of his favorite guitarists for exactly this reason.
I am pretty sure Layne is okay with Jerry taking over for him. He would be happy to know that they are still playing without him around. Jerry Cantrell is an awesome singer anyways and it makes me feel good to know that they are still collaborating. Rock on AiC.
Well, that's the good thing about music, it can hit the listener in different ways. 'Black Gives Way to Blue' has been a go-to album of mine in recent years.
This song is not a dig at Layne. This is rather a dig at the fans that said they should discontinue after Layne's death. "Were you burned away when the sun rose again?" The sun is one of their oldest album logos. "We all traded never befores, selling out for the score..." He's saying they all did things they never thought they would do, but that's what happens to people when they hit mega-stardom. Also, he's saying they all sold out for the "score", not just Layne. Sean was a big drinker back in the day and Jerry had his coke addiction.
THEY SHOULDVE WON THAT GRAMMY!!!! goddamn I almost cried when they didnt get it. I listen to all sorts of music, but in my opinion this is the best album of the decade!!!! very creative very personal. no overproduced filler bullshit that other bands have been throwing out (cough ozzy). some bands just try too hard to stay on top but alice in chains dont give a shit and dont compromise their style. dont get me wrong I know they worked their asses off on this.
No he's not layne but he's still great and Jerry and band didn't change the style for the masses. Fun fact (laynes mom still supports aic and didn't want them to change the name) if the deceased original singers mother supports them why can't we??
This just has to be one of the best songs on Black Gives Way To Blue, right along with...well, everything else! BGWTB will never really be better than the older albums (especially Dirt), but it was a really damn awesome album!! Will and Jerry just sound so fantastic together! I do still miss Layne so much though...RIP brother :'(
I adore this song, it is so nostalgic. It wants you to go forward but the way guitar plays the lower note on the main rift, it makes you feel like it's setting you back, taking a step back. We reached the peak with this song but it left us in the never-ending conclusion. I wonder if it felt similar to Layne. I feel like humanity suffers the same problem but is going numb on it. Stay safe my brothers!
God I love this album!!! Such wonderful unique chord progressions! Almost like something late Romantic composers would come up with if they wrote grungy metal.
awesome song they really have a one of a kind sound and yes it sucks that layne signed off but the remaining members have bounced back despite the big loss. RIP layne you are missed and best of luck to the group.... they still have worthwhile music to put out... it's not played or commercialized.
Alice in chains are food for my soul. Thank you guys for helping me to get a better understanding of... Well, me. Through your art. Always gonna be a big part of who i am as a person. I don't have the same attachment to any other ensemble of musicians. Godspeed #aicfamily
Amazing CD this is the Chains man! love this album so much meaning behind every song on here there are a few sad ones but the overall album is steller and i was actually surprised when the album was this good. Rock on AIC! there gonna be in Van B.C soon cant wait!
@tmota77 I agree with your points but there is some flaw in your facts. Truth is Layne wrote more then half of their songs and was a poet on paper had a strong voice as well could sing live like no other could. When a band misses lyrics as well as voice style from such a pivitol member it changes the band entirely. In regards to their new music it is still very good and should be supported but in saying that Layne wasn't AIC is bull he was the "Alice" In Chains.
@grungeguy83 Sounds to me it goes like this: for the verses Jerry takes the lead vocal spot and Will harmonizes with him on the top end until the 2nd half, where Jerry sings both lead and harmony parts. For the chorus Jerry sings both lead and harmony parts.
Due to the whole 'compression era' we are in, where they push for ultra-maximum volume on CD's (riding 0dB full scale as hard as possible), I have shied away from buying newer releases, but ultimately it's about the music itself, and this one was good enough for me to own, which means a lot. The cymbals are the most affected by the compression (a smeary sibilant sound that lacks clarity), but the music makes up for it, mostly. Thumbs up, especially this song - hope they match or top it next time
@@aviationlba747wrong, that’s not the only song, they have mentioned this album was about Layne and many I said things they never got to communicate to him. The lyrics in many songs make it crystal clear.
@arande3 That's true about the compression era, thanks to the "loudness war". The good news is AIC released the album on vinyl. The quality is better on vinyl and you can hear sounds missed on the digital CD format.
@SoulmaticBrother87 Good to know. Unfortunately I do not have a proper set-up to play vinyl. The line of receiver I own used to have an amazing phono pre-amp, but they removed it a few models ago. Anyway, good to know.
Some of AiCs best stuff is acoustic e.g Dont Follow, Nutshell, Got me Wrong etc, but alot of their electrics sound class when played acoustically - check out MTV Unplugged album - probably some of the best AiC work Ive heard.
@grungeguy83 Oh yeah, CWTF is a great band. It's no surprise Jerry had Will as his 1st choice to replace Layne. I think AIC's next album will be more 50/50 where Jerry or Will sings lead and the other sings harmony. I guess they only let Will sing lead on Last of my Kind so people wouldn't judge him too much until they get used to his voice. They didn't let Will get too loose with his singing but I'm sure on the new albums and EPs they'll let him have at it.
It sounds like Layne was singing with them (Jerry and Will), pure alice in chains, Staley we miss you so much //// the sun never rose again for 2 persons
@tmota77 They had enough "bread on their tables" from "Dirt" alone. To me this album really impresses me. Im amazed they could keep their same style and add a new element. ( although they did have 14 years to do it). This record is dynamite and hate to say it, does compete with the old AIC. However, Layne was the heart and soul of AIC. Layne lived the damn lyrics, who cares who wrote them. That's a singer.
@arande3 Yeah, some don't know the difference b/t the CD and vinyl. The master volume is lower and you can hear more of Cantrell's guitar and DuVall's voice. He layered his voice so much on "Private Hell" and "A Looking In View". On CD, the compression buries his voice way under Cantrell. I hope on AIC's next album the CD is mastered at a lower level. I prefer low over high levels. If you need it louder, just crank the music up. There's no need for the music to be so loud right out the gate.
For those of you dissing Duvall, he's a good singer. Layne is better, we all know. Stop whining. On a side note, Alice is not Alice without Layne. That DOES NOT mean you can't enjoy this music. It's great music. I love this new band just as much as I love Alice in Chains. But this is Jerry Cantrell and his backing band. I have no problem with that whatsoever.
The chorus in this song is one of the most emotional choruses I have ever heard. Truly an amazing song
I agree!
great song either way, but that solo, short but very sweet. lots of emotion in it. I love it
@@buzzkillington8179🌋🌋🏛
The chorus always hits hard. Lyrics, delivery and music blend into a sledgehammer of emotion
This album is so hauntingly beautiful
PanteraAICtestament agreed.
And fucking underated
This is such a good album. Its nice to hear a band from the 90s evolving into something different, but still excellent
hell yeah
Well that is mainly because Layne died i would say:Peace:
Evolving while maintaining that ethereal sound
Cantrell once again proves that he is the master of simple, stripped down solos that elicit unbelievable emotion without playing a thousand notes. In an interview once with Dimebag Darrell, Dime mentioned Jerry as being one of his favorite guitarists for exactly this reason.
This is one of my favorite solos. So much emotion.
man the vocal harmonies are so haunting. My fav part about AiC
So tender and chill, yet subtly depressing and dark. Gotta love this beautiful song, album and band.
This album is mind-blasting!!!!! One of the best albums I've ever heard!!!! Alice please, we need another album!!!!!!
I am pretty sure Layne is okay with Jerry taking over for him. He would be happy to know that they are still playing without him around. Jerry Cantrell is an awesome singer anyways and it makes me feel good to know that they are still collaborating. Rock on AiC.
Also Layne pushed Jerry to sing more so I’m sure he’d be more than proud
Best guitar solo since Time.
Been addicted to this song for like the past month, definitely my favorite off this album.
Private Hell is definitely my favorite song from BGWTB, with this song being a close second.
One of the sweetest solos, love it.
it's slightly haunting yet amazing how i can hear layne singing in this and other songs from this album..... great song
The guitar solo is so beautiful. Incredibly overlooked and underappreciated.
One of the few bands I'm so happy kept going
Well, that's the good thing about music, it can hit the listener in different ways. 'Black Gives Way to Blue' has been a go-to album of mine in recent years.
I love how there are so many elements to this song. They make it so awesome to listen to.
Theres just something so.. haunting about the lyrics. I cant really explain it
That's the magic of Alice in Chains for you
Yet beautiful, and hopeful
I think it’s because allot of these songs are about Layne and the band saying goodbye while also moving on.
This song is not a dig at Layne. This is rather a dig at the fans that said they should discontinue after Layne's death. "Were you burned away when the sun rose again?" The sun is one of their oldest album logos. "We all traded never befores, selling out for the score..." also... the score.... they all took the money... bigest score there is.
Then there was Mike Starr.
Jerry was the alcoholic
THEY SHOULDVE WON THAT GRAMMY!!!! goddamn I almost cried when they didnt get it. I'm in love with the solo

I'd put this pretty damn near the number one AiC songs spot, personally.
I adore this song, it is so nostalgic. It wants you to go forward but the way guitar plays the lower note on the main rift, it makes you feel like it's setting you back, taking a step back. Have any of you heard "Siddhartha" or "private hell" those and this can change your perspective on life. Long live Jerry Cantrell.what a legend.
this is the best album from 2009
One of the most beautifully haunting and sad songs I've ever heard. Nothing comes close to the raw emotion and grit to AiC, old and new
This shit is brutally epic.
awesome song they really have a one of a kind sound and yes it sucks that layne signed off but the remaining members have bounced back despite the big loss. RIP layne you are missed and best of luck to the group.... they still have worthwhile music to put out... it's not played or commercialized.

In his death he has finally found the high he was looking for...happy..eternally..RIP
Both, but Cantrell is the one that stands out in the mix. A great song to here Duvall sing solo is Last of my Kind.
This is the perfect song to wake up to.
This has literally the BEST chorus I've ever heard.
This song has grown on me alot..I believe it's related to Layne and kind of a response to Mad Season River of Deceit in a way..
I loved this from the moment I first overheard my older brother listening to it on the headphones. Aha.
after 14 years !!!! this is great stuff they kept the flaver may Lane R I P
they really went back to basics and it paid off well on the album.
Both of them are singing. Harmonizing lyrics
love this song.Alice is my favorite band of all time!!

such a great song and a great album
Greatest fucking rock n roll band of all time. End of story
This song is beautiful !
This song is so frigging fabulous- it needs to play play on and on and on. *ing awesome.
"Frigging" is not a word for men to use. Please use the word "Fucking" from now on. Thank you for your time.
You better believe it I think this is their best work yet too.
Great song, very underrated
my faverot song off the new Alice in chains cd :D
amazing solo by cantrell
@grungeguy83 Sounds to me it goes like this: for the verses Jerry takes the lead vocal spot and Will harmonizes with him on the top end until the 2nd half, where Jerry sings both lead and harmony parts. For the chorus Jerry sings both lead and harmony parts.
Just read that they performed this live for the first time ever a few days ago hope someone out there got footage of it
Bellissima!
Secondo me le migliori dell'album sono:
-When The Sun Rose Again
-Acid Bubble
-Take Her Out
-Check My Brain
-Your Decision
We should play this live!!!
Love them still!!!!! Thanks for givin this on air!!!!!
i could swear i heard layne on this. it's fucking freaky. i love this song.

absolutely, i can't help but think this song is and ode.
This whole album is tribute to layne
and a beautiful one
Not really. Only the title track is.
@@aviationlba747wrong, that’s not the only song, they have mentioned this album was about Layne and many I said things they never got to communicate to him. The lyrics in many songs make it crystal clear.
Yup! Another one would be Phantom Limb. I wish that Duvall would sing lead more often, he has one hell of a voice.
simply bad ass at 2:02!!!!! simple, but incredible!
It's not Layne singing, but this is a great song.

@PurpleIsAmazin I agree 1000% This AIC album is amazing. I miss Layne but AIC should live on, they were and still are an important band.
2:03 mmmmm sweet solo:D
This is the second best song on the album.
definitely Layne inspired vocals
it means whatever you want it to mean.
And Yes My End Is Coming This Type Of Music Is For All The Loners I'm One Of Them My Life Has Been Sad And Lonely Every Step Of The Way
Awesome song!
Hung On A Hook off of the new album also has DuVall singing lead and holy shit it's good. XD
they did play acoustic in the past too
You nailed it..
This Song Part Where He Said Run I've Done That All My Life
This is my favorite song from this album,i like Black gives way to blue but their best albums are Facelift,Dirt,Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains
Some of AiCs best stuff is acoustic e.g Dont Follow, Nutshell, Got me Wrong etc, but alot of their electrics sound class when played acoustically - check out MTV Unplugged album - probably some of the best AiC work Ive heard.

parece cumbia en unas partes
Alice in Chains is God.
