The Democratic National Committee is moving to confirm President Joe Biden as the party’s presidential nominee with a “virtual roll call” as early as next week, despite serious doubts from many Democratic lawmakers and voters about his viability following a disastrous debate performance in late June. “Joe Biden could be nominated for president next week, even though the convention is almost a month away,” says The Nation’s John Nichols.

No we are not. This is a pregame mindset that is sure to fail. Stop it. Think. Biden, a conservative Dem. Point is to make a hit the ball and score, not to analyze the player. Support the player because he's up to bat right now. And yeah my nephew could beat both candidates. But that's not reality is it.
I care more about the issues than which “team” wins and frankly, the Dems have become so geriatric and stale and refusing to move on the issues… Did you know that “terrible” Project 2025 document included an article called “the conservative argument FOR fair trade?” It’s a document that is actually an internal discussion by conservatives on where the conservative movement could go, more right or more left on some issues. I disagree deeply with half of it, but essays like the one on fair trade excite me… because democrats stopped talking about fair trade 20 years ago. And that’s an issue I care very much about. The Republicans, for better or worse, are evolving, becoming more populist, and yes they’re having an internal battle on cultural issues with some being pro choice and pro gay marriage, some being against it. JD Vance is in an interfaith marriage with a brown Hindu woman. Kari Lake is in favor of legal gay marriage, and is pro choice for the first trimester of pregnancy and in favor of expanding maternal health care access to prevent unnecessary abortions, a moderate approach most Americans agree with. The Republicans are evolving.
The Democrats are refusing to evolve, and in fact are punishing and forcing to fall in line behind the conservative dems, silencing all progressives like AOC and Bernie, basically forcing them to become more conservative than they used to be. The Republicans are being dragged kicking and screaming to the left… but at least they’re moving. The Democrats refuse to move, at all, like a stick in the mud, and punish their progressive constituents and candidates daily.
I’m not saying I’m voting Republican this year, I still don’t trust their war hungry establishment and evangelical base enough. But I’m observing the change. This was once the party of Lincoln. Who knows if they’ll be worthy of voting for in 10, 20, or 30 years?
If the Democrats don’t want to permanently lose people like me, they need to stop “playing ball” with the establishment, stop treating this like a tribe or team sports…. and change! Evolve! Care about the issues the people care about!

Biden delegates don't have to be released! PLEASE investigate the DNC language. It says "the delegates vote for whomever they feel is strongest at THAT time"(!). The delegates are under NO obligation to vote for Joe, even on the first ballot. PLEASE GET THIS INFO OUT THERE. Biden does NOT have to step aside.
I believe this is partly why the Biden ppl are pushing for the early vote.

In the UK there'd be a vote of no confidence, and that'd be that, but in the US it seems voting out a president on grounds of illness is out of party hands.
I suppose that's the problem with presidential systems, given a separate presidential election means this is not just a question of party politics, the American people have voted for Biden and it's gonna be the American people that will have the final say on his fitness to hold office.
More democratic in its way than parties dumping prime ministers when they start becoming unpopular, but at the same time the enormous executive and symbolic power of the presidential office allows for leaders to cling to power well past their sell-by-dates often to the chagrin of their own parties and the people who elected them in the first place.
Somewhat ironically, the US finds itself in a fix usually reserved for absolute monarchies - as in what to do with mad old kings who still think they're fit enough to rule.

Being a technical nerd here: Political Parties, by definition, cannot be part of the government. They are quasi-privately run. So, "constitutional" does not apply. Now does this violate some contract somewhere, that might be argued. But, technically, a political party could choose their candidate using a random dice roll. This almost happens at the local level sometimes. It is only the actual election that must be democratic in nature. (Having said all this, "pre-choosing" early is _not_ a good look and might piss off the general membership.)
The dems are great at breaking rules and playing dirty when they want to lose. But to win? No we must follow rules.
