Volcano Watch 2024: Dark Days for Grindavík
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 січ 2024
- The Grapevine was on location in Grindavík January 15, 2024, to report on the latest situation just over 24 hours after an eruption first began just 450 metres north of the town. That initial erupting fissure was followed by another just on the outskirts of town.
Though lava flow from the main fissure that opened just before 8:00 Sunday morning has slowed and flow from the smaller southern fissure appears to have ceased, the Icelandic Meteorological Office maintains that the eruption is not over.
GPS measurements show that land rise continues under Svartsengi, indicating the magma chamber there is filling back up - this is different than the way the land was behaving following the December 18, 2023, eruption at Sundhnúkagígar. Experts are evaluating the data and measurements to determine what that could mean for the immediate future.
The Met Office also says it is clear that the magma tunnel stretches beneath Grindavík.
Three houses were destroyed by encroaching lava that flowed into the town from the southern fissure on Sunday. Lava from the northern fissure also flowed over Grindavíkurvegur and the hot water pipes running from Svartsengi Power Plant into Grindavík. Crews are now working to restore hot water access to the town to avoid further damage to infrastructure as temperatures sit below 0º C.

My condolences regarding the devastating loss due to both the eruption and the crevasses that have rendered Grindavik uninhabitable for the foreseeable future 😞
Thank you, Jon. I hope your parents are holding together OK. I, like many others, are thinking of them and their neighbors and their loved ones, like you, with love and care and concern.
I woke up yesterday (Sunday) to Professor Shawn Willsey's live drone flyover. It was overwhelming to watch the fissure close to the town open up and grow within a few short minutes.
Ineffable.
A sad report, but thanks for keeping us updated.
Thanks for such an informative and compassionate report. To call it a 'like' button feels insensitive, but you can click it anyway, to commend this to others.
Heartfelt prayers and love for the people of this beautiful fishing village. Definitely want to help a family there. Great work. Your compassion hit me straight in my heart. So sad for the people there 😢😢
Praying won't do anything it never does
Actually there have been studies done, where patients in hospital were prayed for in various religions and by non religious people. The patients did not know who were control and who were subjects of experiment. Compared to the control group who werent prayed for, the subjects had shorter hospital stays, less infections, less depression. Study is referenced in a book by George Leonard called "The Silent Pulse"
There was also an experiment done where a number of Transendental meditators ( i think about 200, from memory), decided to try to bring their towns crime rate down through meditation. Its results showed significant and dramatic drop in crime rate during the meditation period that cannot be attributed to any other changes.
I'm sorry to hear about the man who fell in the crevasse!
Thank you so much for the coverage and opinion on the situation which I hold above anything I'm seeing and reading in the foreign mainstream press.
Keep up the great work and be safe!
The whole world is watching ,waiting and praying for you guys!!! stay safe!!!
Im not praying, so here's where you're already wrong
Couldn't imagine my life being blinded living following a novel story thinking it actually does anything at all.
Is the earth flat, too?
😢I’m sorry for your devastating loss. 😢💔
Thank you for posting updates. So sorry to hear about the loss of life and all of the loss of homes. 💔
For The Man That Lost His Life❤My Deep Condolences Too His Family Friends & Co-Workers,Thoughts & Prayers❤God Bless USA
Thank you for the updates. It is difficult to watch such devastation.
Sorry for your loss. Hope your all well and safe. Please take care 🇰🇪
Atlanta, Georgia, USA_- My heart goes out to the people of Grindavik. Nothing like this is even possible in my part of the world. I just can't even imagine the stress and heartbreak this is causing. Love & Light!
The same from Snellville, GA.
Apparently there's an enormous one somewhere on the border of Canada and the states (I forget so don't quote me) that's been waiting for centuries and is over due... woops . Scary stuff I can't imagine
@@matzbr5tw You have to understand how large the US actually is. The closest American/Canadian border crossing from Atlanta (in the Southeast) is Buffalo, NY which is 1500 K from Atlanta. The furthest one would be near Seattle Washington, on the west coast, which is 4300 K away. I don't which volcano you are talking about but it's almost certainly out west where the majority of our volcanoes are. There is also the fact that there are several very large volcanoes, like the great caldera under Yellowstone National Park, that get a lot of attention from the disaster media, and are "over due for an eruption." Yellowstone is technically an active volcano but it hasn't erupted in several hundred thousand years and is not likely to erupt for another 100K , although it will eventually. When it does it will change earth's climate in a way that would cause the downfall of human civilization.
@@matzbr5twi think it could be within lake Ontario not sure exactly where but that what i was taught..its a pretty big great lake that borders canada
The problem is fissures that are anything like what the guy fell into, mean Grindavik is a soft target for lava to break through. Cracks leak. The ground is spread thin.
Yes. And the whole area is likely a network of lava tubes ferrying magma through paths of least resistance.
Drain pipes are usually one degree slope. I have heard they don't work if the house is one degree off plumb.
Tragic times for the people of Grindavik.
Sending love x
You seem to be devastated... I feel so sorry for you!
Thanks for the updates. Really appreciate you informative videos. Very sad to see the loss of homes. Wishing every one safe and sound.
Sorry for your loss have a blessed day
Great - you found a warm hat! 😊 Thanks for the update.
It was terrible to watch the previous video. 😂
So glad that the wall was able to divert most of the lava away from the town and luckily the fissure that opened near the town flowed largely into a space in the town where there weren’t houses.
I feel for the 3 people that did lose their homes to the lava and any other homes damaged by cracks or frozen pipes.
I am appreciative that people are safe and we all believe there will be more good days on the way! Blessings and safety.☮
So sad for all of these people. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
My heart is breaking for residents of Grindevik. 😢💔
Very concise and informative. Thank you for this.
That fence at the end is the MVP.
My heart goes out to the residents of Grindavik, especially to family of man who fell into fissure. I am so sorry this has happened to you all. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
3 houses are 3 too many if one is your house. So sad for the residents of this small town
thank you.
All the people here in England sent there condolances to the people of the town who have lost so much god bless you all x we are all preying for you so sad ❤
Best news source for Iceland!
Thank you Jon, this is heartbreaking news.I was so hoping all the citizens would be able to move back too. Give your mom & dad a hug and let them know we are keeping all of you in our thoughts & prayers!
Sending my sincerely compassion to those who lost the friend and family member, may they know that our prayers are with them at this time of heartache...💙🇺🇲🇨🇦💙
Could the left sheep been saved?
Prayers and thoughts to all the people caught up in this disaster. To the worker and family of the worker, who tragically lost his life, heart felt condolence for the tragedy. The unpredictability of the details of how this eruptions will unfold is self evident. The fact that this is not over. The idea to close off the whole town until the full extent of eruption is over is a good one. Very gratefull for your continued reporting of this unfolding tragedy.
I am sorry for everyone losses. Prayers going up!
That won't help it never does they need money food clothes and portable shelters not pryers
He just wants to feel like he did something without actually doing anything@@tonyblack4833
@tonyblack4833. Reply. You say prayers don't help. Oh how wrong you are. If I had money if I had clothes to give I would do it in a minute. If I lived closer I would open up my home to a couple of families rent free. But your comment was out of line. I am disabled and have at best $300 to live on. Gas and food come out of that sir. Sometimes prayer is ALL that's left. I am so sorry you do not believe in prayer.
@@glenn5903 it never did anything it never does and if I did have money I would help those in need but I don't so I can't help and praying doesn't do anything skill knowledge wealth supplys materials and resources do and can make things better
Just ssstttoooopppp Tony black - you’re being completely obnoxious.
Thank you, Jon, for your excellent reporting. My deep condolences to the residents of Grindavik.
Thank you for the update.
Sending healing and hope to all the people & pets from Grindavik. May I just compliment the reporter on such professional and clear but heart fell work.
Thank you for providing a current update. I am so sorry and concerned for all who are suffering through this disastrous threat. 🙏💜 for the people and animals coping with this, and hopes that the eruption activity will settle and cease. from Upstate NY 🇺🇸
prayers . commend your work in time of grief.
Sorry to hear that a worker was lost, condolences to the worker's friends and family.
Great reporting. Thank you!
At least they had some of that berm done, it’s too bad they didn’t get more of it done earlier. You can see on the Sunday video how the big river of very liquid lava is being guided west and if that wall was not there it would have flowed south right into the town. Something positive.
Aloha from Hawaii 🤙
Sending our warm vibes to Polly and Valur - the real stars of the show.
Amazing that the greenhouse seems to survive. Those berms really help.
Jon how's your family doing? I know your parents live in Grindavik.
Used to live... I'm sorry for them, but I guess living in Grindavík is over for good...
I saw the video here of Jon going into town with his parents. Heartbreaking and harrowing. I will never forget it.
@@PeteDarrell1972 I’m quite positive the village will reestablish, just on a slightly different location most likely. Such a harbor spot is extremely valuable in Iceland.
The town was first settled in the 900s (not 1900's! 900s).
Thanks so much for the video and info.
I wish you all the Best.
If I remember correctly, from the eruption a few years ago, we could see the fountain of lava shooting up in the air. That's where high pressure gasses were venting, but from the same vent, out of view, were rivers of magma, flowing under the black scab of hardened lava.
So, the black rocky lava is acting like a skin that is filling up and welling up with liquid lava underneath. So, later, an outburst of lava could suddenly happen at any of the edges of the black lava to allow a big flow of lava out from under it.
I just booked a trip 3 days ago to Iceland. Iam so sorry for those people..God Bless stay safe
Thank you
How so very sad for these poor families, I can’t even imagine🙏
My heart goes out to all those effected by the earthquakes and the volcano... I pray that everyone is able to find homes elsewhere and that they are able to make stronger connections in their new communities
I pray for the village & people of Grindavik!!! God's Blessings to all!!!😢❤❤❤
Hello from Oregon, USA! 😃👋🏼

Hoping and praying Filipinos and all people living in that area are all safe... Stay strong keep the faith 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 Have mercy Lord keep them safe...❤❤❤
“Filipinos?” This is Iceland.
What wonderful shoes an hat u have!
Im so so sorry !✌️🙏😥🇺🇲❤️
Prayers to all affected people. 🫂🙏
Extremely sad, but nature can't be stopped, no matter how we try. It still is sad for those who lost their homes and the life lost.💔😢
My prayers and condolences to everyone 😢❤
The volcano that started this had started the exact same way pooling lava under the crust then expanding out days later until it filled the valley. I do not expect these fissures to be any different.
It looks like one of the houses was surrounded by the concrete wall? If it was, it was a smart move.
Don't get comfortable it is not over .
Grindavik is still a viable port/harbor. All is not lost. Homes and certain structures may be loses and unsafe. I know the engineers, geologists, architects and others will figure this out well. Bless you all.
Condolences to your family and others from Grindivik.
Can you report on what the insurance situation is for the families and businesses in Grindivik? Are people covered there for volcanic activity and earthquakes?
To fall into a crevasse, it would have to be one of the most frightening things to endure to know yer life is at an end.
Unimaginable, please be o so careful
How awful to lose one's home and town, and probably one's life?So very sad....
It’s beautiful, frightening and destructive that gives hope to future life and landscape.
We are thinking about you Grindavik, all best from San Diego. In California we know disaster - you are going to get your feet under you.
👍👍
Anyone have an estimate/guess on how high the lava is now?
How about drilling/c4ing the crack near the water to get the lava to flow into the sea past the town!
I always enjoy Art’s pre-and post videos. Absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing to watch.
Is it possible to move the entire town? Does Iceland have the resources to do so?
The fatality is a bit harrowing.
Hope that it's possible for people to get in, get their pets and critters out, along with at least their most important stuff.
But especially their pets and critters.
Perhaps the government will take these needs seriously and step in to help people; also provide assistance, shelter and storage space for humans, their animals and their household items--aside from simply closing the town off.
The whole town was evacuated back in November. This event was foreseen for mo the before it happened.
All pets are out only thing that remains are a bunch of sheep
RIP The worker who fell inside the crevasse, how horrible 😢
Hell on earth.🙏💪
this is a situation that many hoped would never happen, so far it's been a partial escape and there is a chance that in the future things will return to normality. 3 houses burnt down is a shame but (apart for the 3 families) not devastational, let's hope things settle here on in.
Спасибо за информацию 🤔 Это в общем хорошая новость ❤
❤
It's terrifying that there are crevices so deep a man could fall in and never be found.
Very sad 😢 pass my love to them .💞☘
7:29 drone footage 9:45 Efrahóp area destroyed houses
Incredibly sad. I hope each and every family/person from Grindavík will be compensated for their losses. I wish they can start over somewhere else. New jobs, new homes, new schools, new communities.
Look at the bright side. There are many refugees in the world, at least Grinvikings are refugees within their own country. There are many victims of war and human evil. Somehow I think it is easier to overcome destruction caused by nature. Saying that, I realize this is a very heavy time for the people of Grindavík.
Idk but i'm thinking they should abandon area for safety.
have the sheep been rescued?

Bloody hell 😥
The stopping of flow may be the result of many prayers worldwide for Grandavic...flow stopped so quickly...I believe this to be true...thank you Lord Jesus...❤
1. Your scientists and government are great at predicting these now
2. You as a people live on an island of hard rock which makes you even harder to be able to cope for so many generations of weather, wind, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
3. You as a people are just good darn wonderful!

predictions irrelevant, even when they "predict RAIN" 's a hit or miss!!!.nature have the final say so.
Those taking a court case to get back in the town have they shut up now?
Wondering if a cavern has developed under where the magma was flowing? If that's the case, building on top of that area should be banned. Same holds for the cracks that opened up in town. Will this be surveyed?
It might be an ever-changing situation, depending on the pressure. Plus now they know there are caverns, and deep water at the bottoms of that. It's not just the earth splitting at the top. Seems like there would be nothing to make it safe. Very sad.
Building anywhere in this entire part of Iceland seems like a foolish decision.
