Volcano Watch 2023: What The Heck Is Happening By The Blue Lagoon?

- Tens of thousands of earthquakes have rattled the Reykjanes peninsula since October 27, 2023, and GPS readings show ground uplift and magma accumulating 4km underground. What makes this different from the similar events in 2021, 2022 and July 2023? It's all happening right by the Blue Lagoon, the town of Grindavík and the Svartsengi Power Plant.
The Reykjavík Grapevine's Jón Trausti Sigurðarson visited the seismically active area with volcanologist Þorvaldur Þórðarson on Nov. 8, 2023, to find our what's going on.

Much as I love the excitement of these last 3 eruptions, I really hope and pray that this one doesn't happen, or that, if it does, it will be far away from the power plant and Blue Lagoon
We have been so lucky that there has been no loss of life, no damage to homes and infrastructure until now!

I was stationed at Grindavik June 1984 - 85. Icelands population was appx. 250000. I would climb up the hill / mtn and look down on the Blue Laggoon and rember the group of small evergreen trees on the lower slope that were appx. 4 to 5 feet tall. There was only a small wooden room on the lagoon where people could change clothing after swimming. We even swam during winter. It was a wonderfull year of my life in which I was able to experience the wonderfull beauty of Iceland and the friendly companionship of the people in Grindavik.
I also remember the Blue Lagoon with just this little, wooden shed where you changed your clothes. It cost nothing, imagine that! I grew up in Hafnarfirdi, so these landscapes were my backyard, so to speak. I always found them fun and exciting, but also strangely calming.
I got to Keflavík in 1985. I wish I could remember more of the Icelandic I learned even if I was very bad at it 😂 Listening to the local news reports was how I tried to learn more words.
When serving at the closed NATO base at Keflavik in 1979-80, it was amazing to learn that all the heating was from using hot water from the geothermal power plant. Recall hiking to the top of Mt. Keilir and looking over lava fields to the international airport and the power plant / blue lagoon.

Very interesting and informative. I visited Iceland in October and spent a day on the Reykjanes peninsula hiking beside the lava fields from 2021 and 2022, having dinner in Grindavik, then going to the Blue Lagoon, so this all feels personal.

This is a great addition to the knowledge base for what is happening, well done for broadcasting. My only fear is that it may prove to be too late for building the protective wall, events this evening (20.00 Friday 10 November) with the phenomenal level of 3+ earthquakes look like brute force will create a vent and soon. History will tell!

That's strange - they're not even in it
Mt. St. Helens, in 1980, had similar things happen. There was a growing bulge on its side for weeks, and frequent earthquakes, before it finally erupted explosively on May 18th. I will be interested to see what happens here, and I pray no one dies.

Thank you for this vid. It's so helpful to have an understanding of that landscape and where everything is situated. It's really an incredible event for someone to see (me) as I've never seen snow/ice or volcanic activity in real life. Thank you for bringing in an expert! You are at a bad spot there on the faultlines. Because magma does protrude there also. Hard to tell if it is nearby Volcano or faultlines......maybe BOTH?
Build a berm around the power plant and the Blue Lagoon!!!
