Was there a reason for not masking it natively in Illustrator? That would eliminate the redundant file and be non-destructive to the original should you want to reposition or scale it later.
Are you talking about the background? Keeping the background the full size of the image will make the file size bigger, even if you mask it in Illustrator. If I were only doing one carousel, I wouldn't worry about it, but if I were making a lot, I'd want to reduce file sizes.
