I've got the same issue with the arb base rack, and wind noise. I've got it on my Y62, and the noise can be unbearable at times. I've got a light bar on the front, 270 awning, and maxtrax angled mounts, and it is loud. I am looking at the wind deflector to try and help, but I think it is because of all the stuff I've got up there. I did have the rhino on my prado before, and never had that much noise. For the scan gauge, can recommend the Scanguage3, if you aren't locked into something iCheck are looking to bring out. Has everything you want, easy to read display, and have found the fuel economy to be pretty accurate on it too.
A good comprehensive report on the 300. Yes, many new cars of many brands have issues Toyota included. This is the main reason I won't purchase a newly released vehicle because I don’t want to do a manufacturers R&D. Remember, the early LC 200 series had, including oil consumption issues. My later 200 hasn’t given any problems yet touch wood.
I think that’s smart. I’d have preferred to wait for the next generation/facelift before pulling the trigger. But the timing just didn’t work out! Having said that I havnt had any serious issues and I think it will make a solid/reliable tourer for us 👍🏼
Thanks great overview. Our 22 VX has done just over 32,000 and apart from the software recall you mentioned we haven't had any of those issues people discuss on social media as well. And am glad you mentioned that comment about towing. Of course you feel it, so for those that claim they don't....We have a 20ft van and its there but it sits well behind the car.
Hi Cam i have a GX 300 with ARB base rack a discovered my noise was caused by the gap between light bar and rack..fixed it with some heavy duty tape for now.
Great personal review on your 300, seems honest and non bias and straight to the point [your style]. Thanks Cam for sharing, are we getting Tiffs women's review ? Thanks Bill Mc
I had a $20k rebuild on a 185,000kms 200 series due to dusting. It’s not a debate it’s a fact. The air filters are just as much of a problem as the box itself. A Panel filter from the likes of a BA Flacon is not acceptable for a land cruiser. No cruisers prior to the 200 had panel filters and no cruisers prior to the 200 had dusting issues. Not sure if Donaldson do the powercore for the 300, but if they do, you need to get that. Yes need.
Pretty bang on with the 300 review mate. Ive just clicked over 30k myself and echo most of what you say. In terms of the rack, I run the same base rack as I had the rhino equivalent on my previous daily and the noise was considerbly worse. The base rack (in my opinion) is the quietest option Ive come across, in saying that I opted to not have the top lightbar such as yourself so i do think there's avoidable noise that's gone with just the deflector and no light in front of it.
Yeah the Yakima rack I had on before was way louder, the ARB is an improvement, but still very loud. I bought the light bar off the back of a recommendation from someone that worked at ARB. They said it would help break up and the wind rushing over the top and reduce noise in conjunction with the deflector. I havnt driven it without the light bar so I might try remove it and see how it sounds.
@@WildTouring word is they are working on one for the 200, so it would make sense to make one for the 300 since they all share the same rear panhard setup.
Lane change assist is down right dangerous when towing a van. I’ve seen cars get quite a sway up when the tow vehicle has wrenched the car back where it wanted it and snapped the caravan into a sway.
I hate lane and radar, took our hiace 4wd into Toyota 4 times to get it fixed, got stung each time. As soon as we hit the beach or a gravel road it buggers up again. I’ve not bothered getting it fixed for 2 years now…the dash just has warning flash. Tech is stupid sometimes!!
That's a comprehensive review Cam. Good job. 👍 In spite of my "wait and see" trepidation about any new model vehicle, I think you've made a good choice and yes, there is no such thing as the perfect vehicle. I also think these Toyotas will be running long after the big yank trucks have had their day. For what it's worth, my experience with ARB is similar to yours. Their attention to detail leaves a lot to be desired and I would look to another provider if I was starting again.
Yeah that’s what I’ve always done, and have been doing. But have read some conflicting things on owners groups so will have to have a read of the manual and see what Toyota recommend
Hey mate, we are from Gero (family with kids similar age as yours), been on the road for almost 2 years, very similar setup to yours, LC300 and Zone. I sent you a few messages through messenger. Scan gauge 3, is a must, also techstream on your laptop, I am having issues with trans temps but if been advised that a lock up kit will be more effective than a Trans cooler. I’ll be getting a multi map setup in the next 3 weeks.
Hi Cam, re: dust inside cabin. Do you use recirculate all the time or drive with the windows open ? Try using outside air and keep the windows closed, this will pressurise the cabin and stop dust getting inside, might need fan on speed setting 2 or 3.
Nah as you said on dusty roads I drive with windows closed, outside air on and fan speed around half way. I honestly just don’t think the door seals are much chop!
We had a dusting problem with our 200 at 112,000km. Toowoomba Toyota were excellent and within 2 weeks we had a brand new motor ($32000) installed under warranty. We were told that if the vehicle had been fitted with an after market air box this claim would have been voided.
and the cruise control should be simpler / 2 modes predictive and old school. The old school should be working regardless. It's not on loosing all because of an error.
Interesting review. I'm really surprised that it's getting dust in in the cabin and to me that's totally unacceptable. I've spent quite a bit of time in my reasonably cheap and cheerful late model second hand Colorado ute, and whilst I've had red dust in the tub even with a canopy, I've never had it inside the vehicle. I'd be asking for that to be looked at under warranty.
G'day mate, nice breakdown. On the ARB products, just my 2 bobs worth in relation to the roof rack. I bought the same a few years ago for the GU, as yourself it was massively noisy, until I purchased the deflector, which I must say, fixed the noise for me. I have the Darche 270 Awning and run 4 maxtrax but flat not setup like yours, I also have their double Jerry can holder at the front, for long trip fuel carry. Now to my point. For me I love the design, BUT, paint quality terrible, started chipping within the week. Take that aside no wind noise, so wondering if it might be the maxtrax position on yours if not maybe just the roof design of the 300. Just a thought. Cheers.
Appreciate the suggestion mate 🙏 I’ve ran around in it without the maxtrax (and mounts) and it was still pretty noisey. I want all the gear on the roof so I’ll have to just suck it up 🤣
Do you do your own oil changes and services Cam ? I’ve got a Scan Gauge 3 and it will read almost every sensor on the car, you can see everything in realtime , if only I knew what they all meant. 😀
Nah AGD do all my servicing. Haha yeah it’s a bit like that with the scan gauges 🤣 Hopefully I’ll get much hands on one soon, really interested in trans temps!
after market fuel tank, suspension, filter box, breaks, error code/temp reader !? Why can't these be factory options or even come as standard (like the car play display you get an app that shows the temperature) one ends up paying a lot more on top of an already expensive car. For what? to get dust ingress :-( Glad you are happy with your purchase but I will not be going down this path.
Honestly it’s ridiculous. They had my stock, 2 week old car for less than two hours, rang me and said it was ready to pick up but would cost me $600 because it’s not covered. I asked what they did and how they come up with that figure and they said they recalibrated sensors and it’s all labour.
@@WildTouring, surely you didn’t pay it did you? I had something similar once , dealer told me it wasn’t warranty it was wear and tear. We are all waiting on Kaon to come out with some UVP and recovery points! I havent seen any word from them yet, so hopefully it is in the works
Good to see someone give realistic fuel averages. I get pissed off at people telling me they get 14l/100km when towing a 3.3 ton van 🤷♂️
Cheers for the icheck promo. Just had mine arrive this morning. Now I gotta wait for the car to arrive 😂
