THANK YOU!!! My co-worker was arguing with me the other day with the stupid net carbs. I told him don't count calories, but check the total carbs. He was not having it (one of those co-worker that has to be right all the time). He said he is still losing weight. So I told him "you can lose weight with crack and cocaine too. 🤣 It's not all about losing weight. It's the quality of it."

That is true. A person, I think Germany or somewhere in Europe, drank nothing but beer during Lent. At the end, he lost a decent amount of weight. Beer is loaded with carbs and calories so I think the reason he lost weight was because his body wasn't using them. He probably (assumption) was malnourished. I started keto to lose weight but the more I learn about it, I am sticking with it for health reasons.

Let's take a typical avocado. 17 grams of carbs - 10 grams of fibre = 7 net carbs. That's what I count. Otherwise my avocado/kale/arugula salad puts me over 20 total carbs, and kicks me out of ketosis. Which it doesn't. The lesson, as always is eat real food and avoid ANY processed food (including pre-packaged keto snacks), along with starchy vegetables and sweet fruits.

    • @aquamarine99911
      @aquamarine99911 4 роки тому +5

@@majinbahamut3985 The fiber doesn't "cut out" carbs. Fiber IS a carb, one that passes through your digestive system to your colon, without triggering an insulin response. I completely agree that Keto snacks, bars with sugar alcohols and processed Keto items that give you net carbs are false and will get you into trouble on your weightloss journey. However, if 100% of your carbs come from moderate fruits and veggies the fiber in them netted out never got me in trouble. I also think your statement that veggies are free is a slippery slope if you are following Keto. Too many veggies does slow you down, causes bloat and will definitely slow down your weightloss and ketones. I think many people eat a lot of the so called Keto products and incorporate the fake sugars and that is tough for the body to handle when you are insulin resistant.

I’m so glad I found this channel Doc, thanks for posting these videos! I’ve been trying to lose weight without admitting I’m a carb addict. Net carb counting lead me to snacking and eating products that were ultimately appeasing my inner carb addict and gave me a way to rationalize my usage by doing the “math”. I’ve switched from keto to whole food plant based and now whole food omnivorous. I kept messing up on keto because I playing with the net carb formula and would end up eventually over eating those products ultimately binging and relapsing to uncontrolled eating.

I'm supportive of your work, and your great interviews on the "Low Carb MD" podcast!
However, I think you're over-simplifying that "your body doesn't calculate net carbs". Your body can't do math (you're right), but it certainly handles various carbohydrate in different ways.
Example: Manufacturer XYZ invents a 'SawDust Bar" made up of 20g of sawdust and 2g of artificial sweetener:
    22g total carbohydrate
    - 20g insoluble fiber
    - 2g of artificial sweetener
    = 0 net carb
Your video says that my body is going to treat the 20g of sawdust the same way as the 2g of artificial sweetener.
Here's where I think you're right (this and other videos): The 2g of artificial sweetener is the problem...
    * Insulin rises from the sweetener (causing you to eat more SawDust bar)
    * Dopamine 'hit' (causing you to go to the cabinet between meals for your SawDust bar)
In my opinion, your video should really be saying:
    * It's the "innocent 2g of sweetener" that is the problem (it isn't a 'free' sweetener)
    * Manufacturers treat all non-nutritive alcohols/sweeteners as if they truly have 0 net carbs, but it's a sliding scale
    * Sweeteners have different psychological/addictive and physiological effects for different people
    * It's a considerable amount of (often wasted) effort/time to find out what your body can handle
    * Therefore, be careful, and it's highly recommended to stick to "total carbs" (to be sure, and make it easier for yourself), OR travel down the difficult path of meticulously deriving what works for your body.

@@koreycowan1976 Thanks! Stevia can raise insulin in some people, and cause dopamine hit. But, it shouldn't affect the "net carbs" calculation much.

Remember, this is a channel about carb addiction, not perfecting the Keto diet. I see the doctor’s point, using his alcoholic analogy. If you struggle with obesity and/or Type 2 diabetes, you should probably look at total carbs and make the binary decision whether or not to put something into your mouth. Net carbs becomes a slippery slope that may get a carb addict off track.

He mentioned most of that in the video. His ultimate point is that counting net carbs and eating look alike low carb foods affect you mentally in a negative way ultimately leading you to a failed dieting experience which is statistically proven.

I was on the original Adkins diet many years ago and lost a ton, like you said. And I gained it back following a divorce, but I don't recall him mentioning "net carbs" at all. Fiber wasn't even on packaging back them. When I returned to the diet some years later, again I lost a bunch of weight and then heard about the "net carb" idea and the weight loss stopped, but I didn't make the connection.

"its not what goes into your mouth, but what goes into your blood stream instead". Thank you for saying that!
Since I was diagnosed as diabetic six years ago, I've made it a hobby to test how my body reacts to various foods. (I go through a lot of strips.)
Conclusion: my BG levels are indeed negatively affected by fiber. Maybe not as extreme as if they were the same amount in white bread or potato chips instead, but I am absolutely affected by foods such as flax, psyllium, avocado, and similar.

I thank God for discovering you. I have had a terrible time kicking carbs and sugar. I have been "carnivore" since July of last year and was fine for about 6 mos. Then I had a piece of my Mom's 85th birthday cake and wham! I have not been able to kick it for 3 mos now. You however have simplified my doubt of ever going carnivore again. I know now I will be able to look at the food and say to myself yes or know when I look at the food before eating. Thank you. Good thoughts.

So happy I found your channel. Been following Keto for a few months and started intermittent fasting because I have insulin resistance. About to embark on a longer water fast. My question is do you take bloodgroups into account. For example I'm B pos and been told pork and chicken are bad for me and should stick to fatty meats like lamb? From South Africa

I don’t get it. Over 90% of people gain the weight back???? I was under the impression the weight was gained back because they stopped doing what they did to lose weight in the first place ,and went back to eating high carbs. Your telling me if they just count total and not net carbs they won’t gain the weight back? This one adjustment will make them never gain weight??? It will give them the willpower to never touch a high carb meal again? 🤔

I just discovered your channel, loving your content, quick question: if we are not counting macro’s then what are we counting carbs at all, let alone net of total carbs? If zero carbs are the goal, then how many are acceptable?

I lost 36 pounds in 30 days doing Atkins new diet revolution in the 90s (20 TOTAL carbs). Ive been doing todays "keto" for 4 months (20 NET carbs) and just reached 36 pounds. Keto is more flexible in food options but is flawed as it doesnt account for total carbs. I dont care what your macros are; if you eat more than 50 total carbs it will be very difficult to maintain ketosis. Ive had days where net was under 20 but total was over 90! I just started lowering to under 50 total and am losing a half pound a day.

Dr. Cywes just watch this video and can only think about when we spoke last net carbs against total carbs and then it’s BS. My weight is down by nearly 40 pounds by staying on a carnivore diet and of course portion control and exercising in the pool. Congratulations Doc , I am a believer, and so is my wife

I did Atkins in the '70s and the concept of net carbs didn't exist. The daily total carb count was 20. I'd never heard of net carbs until keto came along...and I wish I hadn't. I think that's my downfall. Atkin's is more keto than Keto.

I just found you.. I started keto about 2 years ago.. lost 40 pounds in a year.. have stabilized.. from 230 to 190.. I loved being 180 but gained back 10 (I'm a 6 ft tall 64 year old female). I'm trying not to go extreme again on low carbs... But I would like to get back to 180... I get the addiction comparison.. but While I do think some people are addicted to sugar, just like addictions to alcohol, drugs, ect... BUT I'm not an addict to anything .. ( maybe to too much TV) I just wanted to lose some weight and it worked and I feel very good.. So I'm trying to understand how you can discern the addict vs someone that tricks the body to burn more fat like me. I do also get your point about total carbs.. and that we shouldn't fool ourselves about how many carbs were eating.. but if I'm correct and I'm not really an addict.. could I eat carbs in a "normal" diet like most people eat.. and maybe just cut back on caries instead? Like the old calories in vs calories out? OR.. should I stick to keto management.. around 50-100 carbs a day, and continue to avoid carbs that are in most " normal" American foods like pastas, breads, rice? Just curious.
