    To say the past week has been a STRESS INDUCING CRAZY FEST would be an understatement. It's all "fixable" but man, when you're in the moment it sure seems like the world is working against you. Next weeks gonna get better...that's what we keep telling ourselves. Our fingers are crossed!
    Nikki shared a lot more on our website including behind the scenes photos. She's also written out step-by-step instructions for the sailboat window removal/replacement - delamination project. It's not a perfect guide for all sailboats, but if you're in a Leopard Catamaran like us it should help give you a major head start. gonewiththewyn...

    Lot’s of questions and great comments I want to touch on:
    The Bank Situation
    • We now have Bitcoin! After years of people telling us “get bitcoin” we finally made the leap. And by request we’ll be adding the Bitcoin QR code to our Tip Jar: www.gonewiththewynns.com/tip-jar
    • I have Schwab Bank and Brokerage accounts for my personal as well. They have been awesome. I opened a business Schwab account as a backup to Chase.
    • Travelling Notice - Of course I alerted Chase before we left Panama for Ecuador.
    • International Bank - I looked into HBSC and a few others. Seems like a good option however few have branches in Dallas where our business and home address are located. With the limited time I wasn’t really able to flesh out these options. Maybe once I get to AUS or NZ we can dive a little deeper.
    And the boat: YES, owning a boat is often a pain in the butt…but it gets us places that a house, car or RV can’t. Is it worth it: Sure! As for that final step on the window project, you’ll see it in the next vid.
    Want more details, the step-by-step window process, and Photos check out our website here: www.gonewiththewynns.com/windows-falling-out-jason-leaving
    Thanks to everyone that took the time to send recommendations and questions.
    - Jason

      Very informative stuff. Thanks for sharing. If either of you were former military, maybe look into military / veteran friendly banks / financial institutions which are extremely at ease with members who are often travelling overseas. In the past I have found NFCU to be excellent and USAA to be outstanding.

      etrade, etrade, etrade. I know several people who loathe Chase because of issues with their checking accounts. etrade has never been a problem. Probably because I have an RSA dongle there. In any case, I hope you didn't stay with Chase after they did that to you!

      I thought the same thing. Though, the alternative to having your money stolen is much worse. I had this happen to me once, but not to this degree. You have to just think that they are looking out for your best interest.

      So much for being AMERICAN and getting burned by your own bank. Surely common sense could prevail using Skype for verification? Banks always screw over the little people. Would they do this to George Clooney? CHASE should be rewarded by a feature on 60 Minutes.

      There may be more to this story that we don't know about, so , hard to judge why they want someone in person. He didn't say who paid for the flight, or exactly why he had to go in person.

    Caulking out windows for a marine environment application is a daunting task no doubt. The one thing I learned in the 25 years of experience I have working in the shipyard marine industry is Prep, Prep, Prep. Another issue I discovered when working with certain type caulking is weather plays a big factor. Things such as humidity, air temperature, surface temperature, temperature of the product. So many factors play into applying caulking, like type of material it's being applied to, certain types of metal, wood, plastics, fiberglass, gelcoats, etc. Something so small like the oils on your skin getting onto a previously prepped surface inadvertently can cause a caulking not to bond properly.
    Looks like you guys are doing a real good job at the installation and hope that this one will last a lot longer for you. Thoroughly enjoy every one of your videos, have been a fan since way back in the rv days. Take care and fair winds.

    • @KCautodoctor
      @KCautodoctor 6 років тому +3

      You nailed it - prep work and environmental conditions play huge factors on a successful sealing job like this. Something many people also do not realize is that most caulks & RTVs have a very specific shelf life after leaving the factory - and that also depends on how it is handled along it's way to the end user between all the shippers & middle men in the process. Also if the container is not a stamped with a specific expiration date on your caulks & RTVs then contact the product manufacturer and find out when the containers of product you have were actually manufactured based on date coding marked on it and how much longer the product manufacturer will warranty that it is still able to be successfully used. And yes - bad batches of product do make it out from the manufacturer's occasionally, but it is usually the handling of it once it has left the factory that plays a much bigger role (shipped/stored in freezing & high temps are biggest factor).

    • @raynic1173
      @raynic1173 6 років тому +1

      Also, I don't remember if they said they did, but I would have contacted the manufacturer and asked for their recommendation on this install and prep, as Thomas stated above. Some materials, especially high sceen, may have special conditions for bonding.

    The reason for the “paint” isn’t aesthetics, it is to protect the caulk from UV. Typically, the coating placed on auto windshields isn’t plain vanilla paint, but a coating made to adhere to glass and block UV. Omitting that will likely cause your caulk to fail prematurely from UV exposure. However, if the caulk you are using said that you didn’t need the paint protective layer, then hopefully they know what their product can handle.
    As to the bank, the best thing is to not use a bank, but find a credit union you can join. Many now have more flexible member requirements and you likely can find one where you will qualify for membership. Maybe a “sail boaters” credit union. I left banks 35 years ago and have never looked back. My credit union is so much better than any bank I dealt with.

    • @starttherebellion9146
      @starttherebellion9146 6 років тому +1

      If I could give this a thousand thumbs up I would. Credit unions are far superior to banks. I dumped all banks for my credit union many years ago, and would never go back.

    Great job on the Windows and I think your analysis of the issue makes sense. Great idea to put thin layer on instead of paint. Caulk is nightmare to apply and not get half on yourself or the boat. Love you guys sense of humour and the way you present things, not a how to but this is how we did it and why you make up your own minds.... As for banks don't get me started. I would be moving my money elsewhere and sticking two fingers up to Chase, crazy way to treat a customer. Hope all goes well with you all alone aboard but those gorgeous cats will keep you company. @edrosenberger6947 6 років тому +37

    Chase is known for this kind of unreasonable crap....they don't care how much hassle, embarrassment or money this causes a customer.....time to change banks to one that cares! I'd say you are correct about the paint being the problem. If that caulk is as good as they claim, your fix should last for quite a few years. The fiberglass moves (deforms) a bit while pounding waves, so the caulk/adhesive must remain flexible if the bond is expected to last.

    About the window job. Hats of for you guys doing this yourself. Did you do a million things wrong? If it worked in the end, you didn't do it wrong :-) I'm a mechanic in the long haul trucking industry and I take care of 90% of the windshield replacements at our factory and all other glue on parts (hatches, windows...) and rainwater leaks. These jobs can be tricky but with some simple tools they can be far less difficult.
    About the black sides (spraypaint), on of the main reasons for this apart from aesthetics is to provide UV protection for the silicone. On more curved windows the black part also plays a role in the baking process to get the right curvature on the glass. But normally the black parts are between two layers of glass, I've never seen it sprayed on, straight on the glass.
    To remove the glass I would suggest a wire to cut the silicone, you should be able to do this in about half an hour or less. The tools are not expensive and not hard to handle. Also I would strongly suggest an electric caulking gun, it's worth the investment since you'll need silicone on a boat all the time.
    If it wasn't for the fact you're literally on the other side of the planet, it would be my pleasure to assist you on your next window job, for free. Anyway, if you want I can give you some more insights of how I tackle these jobs as a professional. I can send you some pics to on Instagram, but only if that's ok for you, I don't want to spam you guys :-) If you want more info or have any more questions, just give me a shout ;-)

    The reason the black paint didn't stick is because somebody forgot to coat the window with the activator before painting. The activator must also be put on the fiberglass before applying caulking. No activator = no sticking. Your windows will eventually loosen again. The paint is necessary to prevent UV damage to the caulking.

    One tip I learned from a car window installer is to leave a bit of the old caulk on the window and the framing (just a thin layer over it all). Put the new caulk over it. It will allow the new caulk to adhere better. This has been an ongoing issue for you guys and you always are cleaning the old stuff off the windows and frames, but you will likely have less problems if you leave the stuff that's stuck on the windows and framing there.

    Hi. A few recommendations, if you're interested. One, I have been banking at CitiBank for years and have traveled all over. They work well with letting them know if your traveling. You can also do just about anything via chat if you need to. They have branches all over including Dallas, TX. Additionally, you may want to have someone with a power of attorney within the states so they could handle things like your running into with your banking. Preferably a family member you trust.
    Additionally, as it seems your windows seal fail at the glass, you may want to etch the glass that will allow your sealant to adhere much better, but it will be a bear to clean off if you need to later. Just a thought.

      I too have heard good things about CITI and international access. In fact I think I saw you guys in a CITI branch, maybe Panama Canal so you might have access to more branches internationally. Pick up a CITI credit card for your primary spending and you have one site to check each month :-)
      Someone mentioned US based VPN. That would be a good idea even if your accounts were not being shut down due to to international access.
      And speaking of security I think you guys sometimes leave a computer in local establishments for uploads. Consider a cheap refurb for this purpose. Something like this (www.amazon.com/Dell-Latitude-Windows-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B07B3M17TY) for $99.

    "Black caulk, white window, not a good combo"........😉😀. Just kiddin'. The bank thing...i just had something similar happen. I was on a long distance motorcycle trip (5 states). My banks fraud department made the assumption that my card was stolen because evertime it was used, I/it was at a different location. They froze the account until I called them to verify it was me using it (primarily to get fuel) every couple of hours at different locations. They verified that it was me and "unfroze" the account. Sounds like you might need to look at switching banks!!!

    • @KCautodoctor
      @KCautodoctor 6 років тому +3

      This is very common now. The banks are using AI and have very specific algorithms that flag suspicious activity. Most banks do like yours and allow you to call them from wherever you are & answer some security questions. The only time I had to physically goto a bank to prove who I was, was related to a very sophisticated ID fraud that the criminals almost got away with if I had not been monitoring my bank account activity as close as I do.

      Working out of town and getting fuel in cities a few hundred miles apart in the same day got my bank to shut me down. Until they sent out a new card and number, to my house a week and 1200 miles away from where I was at.

    • @KCautodoctor
      @KCautodoctor 6 років тому +2

      Every bank handles it differently. I have learned to ask every 6 months what my different bank's fraud prevention practices are and how they will handle any suspicious activity on my account. You will learn very quickly that most average bank employees are clueless on the specifics and you usually end up having to get put into contact with the fraud prevention department. I have also learned that their fraud prevention practices are constantly changing and just because they handled it a certain way 6 months ago but handle the same situation completely differnt today (and likely will change again in another 6 months).

    Guy! This is why you always put a family member or person you trust on your accounts as an alternate. I worked multi day shifts and my husband went to sea for a living. It was imperative to have another person on the accounts the save costly clerical errors. Please consider this in the future. Good luck. 👍🏼

    Been there done that too. Our Lagoon 410 has the big plexiglass windows on the side of the hulls, they too delaminated, but after the requisite 10 years. One difference from what you describe is that the vanity paint is on the outside of the glass. The disadvantage to this is that the paint wear off over time.

    Had a similar situation with a bank I was with for 30 yrs, trying to control my acct. Making changes to my acct. Had it out with the manager, moved my mortgage, checking, saving literally across the street to another bank. Check to make sure their policy is not the same. I.e. we the bank are king , u the customer are there to shit on...

    Nice videos on windows & banking guys! "In this day & age" about sums it up. We have our bank shut down our account from time to time while cruising the different islands but a phone call back to Canada clears it up. I thought that was bad, but Chase is a whole new level. Maybe another bank....cheers.

    Hey from Detroit. FYI the “sparky paint” on the windows is called Frit. The “caulk” is called urethane or glazing. The frit is responsible for bonding the urethan to the glass. You may also need a primer. In most automotive applications there is a primer and sometimes an activator. Keep the videos coming.

    If you qualify, I highly recommend USAA. They are based in Texas and I have been with them for over 20 years. A few years ago I drove from Saudi Arabia to UAE. At the border, I had to pay import fees which were over my one day limit. Gave them a call as I stood at an ATM, they increased the limit and while I still had them on the phone, I took out the money. Fantastic service!!

    Windows. Use 3m VHB tape or VHB glazing tape to hold the windows and seal with Dow Corning 795. It's how skyscraper Glazing is fixed and they don't come off every couple of years. The 3m VHB tapes are acrylic based so will work well with your acrylic windows. Don't worry about the fact those products aren't labelled marine and their respective engineering data is extremely impressive.

    Hi Nikki and Jason
    I thought to share this with you regarding banks and sailing or any other issues with banks for that matter.
    We are not sure if it works like this in the USA but we use an international bank and have had similar issues. Ana follows up by demanding a 'complaints procedure' and puts forward the complaint to that department demanding a refund covering all costs.
    If we fail at that level we take it to the banking ombudsman for a ruling.
    In every case we have been refunded fully with interest.
    I thought to mention it here because the banks are NOT a law unto themselves, people just feel they don't have the power - but we do!
    Cheers my friends ...
    Hope things are better for you and hoping those windows stay glued!
    Brent and Ana

    Actually with the windows, I put my money on lazy contractors. You guys did everything right. Cleaning is the second big step before applying fresh adhesive "caulk" that effectively is the seal that keeps the water out and the window secure to the boat. The sealant remains flexible so the window moves "slightly" as the boat flexes. Applying a skim coat as Nikki did to the window is the best method to ensure the two surfaces "mate" and seal tight. Good job, shouldn't have to mess with the windows for quite while.

    Use a length of stainless steel safety wire and two dowels, get the wire between the window and the boat, and use a sawing motion to cut the caulk...Fair Winds!!

    I think I noticed Nikki sanding the window panel. That's probably the best thing that could have been done. A roughed up surface forms a better attachment than a smooth one that might be contaminated with oil from fingerprints or sweat. Now all you have to do is hope that it doesn't attach TOO well. =)

    The black spray-paint isn't just there to "hide" the caulk - it's there to protect the caulk from continuous UV exposure. Same as ceramic frit-printing on glass.

    I would like to make a suggestion that might be worth checking out. They make a rechargeable battery operated caulk gun, perfect flow which means perfect bead of caulk every time. Just pull the trigger and let it flow, and for a big job like that it would have to make the job go smoother. Love your vids. have fun.

    I know I'm late to this video, but here is one idea that might help. For important 'secure' actions you want to do on your computer, like accessing bank accounts, consider getting a VPN service. Obviously you will want one with international access, and one that will let you select the masking address to be one in the U.S. It will most likely cost you some performance, so you will have to gauge when to use it but it will go a long way to (a)protect you from being snooped on when using foreign internet services, and (b)solve this account locked due to foreign access problem.

    Have you considered using a VPN service? You can tunnel into the US and all your traffic appears as if you are in the US.

    • @IMSiegfried
      @IMSiegfried 6 років тому +1

      Since sites like Netflix and Hulu can tell when you are using a VPN I'd imagine any decent bank could too.

    • @seshpenguin
      @seshpenguin 6 років тому +1

      Setting up a server, such as a DigitalOcean droplet and then using something like OpenVPN or (as I do) an SSH Tunnel (over SSL for some firewalls). Works quite well, since it's your own private server, not shared IPs and whatnot.

    • @IMSiegfried
      @IMSiegfried 6 років тому

      Jack, Don't be condensing. If you don't believe me Google Netflix or Hulu and VPN. It's not rocket science. If you set up your own server like Seth suggested *after* I made my original comment than I imagine that would work because they IPs are not shared. But simply using a VPN will not work and you don't have to use a server to use a VPN.

    I've seen that painting trick used on smaller boat windows (trailer sailers) but I thought your system of using the actual caulk to do the cosmetic part was clever. Well done. Nikki's work with the spatula was excellent. A packet of nitrile gloves wouldn't go amiss on the boat. I imagine you had fun getting caulk of your hands.

  • @danielkoehn3209

    When I replaced my windows I sprayed M.L. Campbell Clawlock Black, because it makes a chemical bond to the window instead of a mechanical bond like paint. It looked like you were using Dow Corning 795, which is the correct caulking. It’s not a fast easy job replacing windows!

    I agree with you about the paint, window to fiberglass with silicon. You could paint the outside. I'm no expert, but as you pointed the paint was coming off. It is tedious with only 1800 people looking over your shoulder, and then there's a learning curve. Does it keep the water out, mission accomplished. Enjoy your time with family and skype Nikki every day, and we'll see you guys in the next one.
