I worked at the telecoms company as an engineer where Graham Massey's father was a senior manager there when Graham had his hit with this song. I remember so very well coming into the office and Derek said, "Did you see Our Graham on Top of the Pops last night?" Top of the Pops on the UK was watched by around 18 million people back then. Happy Days, good video.
@@Dudderlyful Derek was a lovely fella and it was actually a great company to work for. Happy Days. I've never met Graham, only watched him in interviews but you could tell straight away who his Dad was.
I met Graham Massey at the factory day at the beams last year and thanked him for getting me into production myself in the early 90's. He seemed genuinely chuffed to be recognised!
Really interesting how they used the accents. Just listening to the song you'd probably think they layered more than one sample, but they didn't. Very informative as always.
Not only did this help me figure out that adding swing to my drum patterns was all that was missing to give things the Feel I wanted, but hearing the end jam made me realize I’d heard this song in a very odd SFM video on here once, and I’m now off to find it
[SFM] Humane goes for a walke, by An0nymooose, if anybody’s interested This is one of his more tame ones, shit gets weird fast if you go down that rabbit hole
I recently bought a Gotek drive for my old E-mu Esi-32. It came with a USB drive with all those old E-mu sample banks including loon garden and shakuhachi. Such cool and iconic samples, been looking for a decent version of that loon sample since I first heard Toxic Two - Rave Generator. I used to call it the 'Weird Owl.'😂
Dude! I was 18 years old, recently moved to Chiswick, West London, in 1989. First job I got, I met a mate, whom my first son is named after, who introduced me to house music, rave, and ecstasy. I have heard so many bootlegs, remixes, and cuts of Pacific State, and to this day, it remains one of my all-time favourite tracks. Seeing it broke down like this, the simple patterns, samples, and judicious application of swing, that made a track which truly embedded itself within my soul is amazing. The bliss felt whilst your chest resonates to those thudding kicks, the strobes, lights and lasers flashing, and the chemical perfection rushing through your being, whilst, eyes closed, you embrace the universe and become purest love! Yeah, they were heady days, it was a phenomenal time and place to be alive, riding the wave of rave. Just awesome! 🤍 808 State, AND Leftfield are headlining at Scorrier House Festival in August. It is literally just over the road from us, so we get complimentary tickets. I. CANNOT. WAIT!!!! 🤪
That EMU-2 sample is weel used in early (94/95) jungle/drum and bass. The 'Loon' (or Great Northern Diver in the UK) as sampled in Pacific State is a very smart looking bird, closer to the size of a Canada Goose than a duck, not at all common in Europe (main population is northern US). Great vid and breakdown of what is an iconic track (too many remixes though), have happy memories of the rave scene circa 88-94.
I live in Minnesota and the Loon is the State Bird here (and a Protected Species). There's even a rock station here called '103.7 The Loon'. The loon part made me chuckle.
wow this is a classic - never forget a coworker of mine at a video game store handing ex:el to me & next thing i know we're watching 808 open up for New Order's Republic tour!
Superb video Cap'n, a rare insight into one of the defining songs of the era and one that's very close to my heart as this marked the start of my journey into dance and electronic music ♥️
Not often do I think "oh, I'll watch this RIGHT NOW, I just can't wait!" while on UA-cam, only with The Pikant Troupe. Amazing, as always. Thank you so much!
Wow! I just have to thank you and your Patreon supporters for this. This song is such a deep part of me and I was not expecting to see this even though I'm not surprised at all.
New to the channel, but I love the interaction with the woman when she comes in. Thank you for representing different voices and talents in your videos!
Yeah the relationship and collaboration is one of the many things that make this channel special. I find myself wondering if the Beat Bunny conjures herself for their daughter, or just us kids of all ages?
You do make it look so simple. (I've struggled with an almost total absence of drum programming skills all my musical life.) I enjoyed this video - nice to see such a good old classic taken apart and reassembled.
I bought them as well as A Guy Called Gerald''s everthing. He wrote that. PEOPLE NOW U ALL HAVE TO GET HIS SONG CALLED "SPECIFIC HATE ". Because they worked together. "SPECIFIC HATE" existing. Thanx 2 Gerald
Your videos looks sooo good, montage, design, picture quality, all is awesome. Hope channel will grow soon. Even for advanced user it’s interesting to watch!
I think Balearic House is better descriptor of "Ninety" album. UK House music at the time was heavily influenced by Ibiza club scene. I also recall mentioning in some podcast Graham Massey Exotica movement took heavily influence on group style. He had himself Jazz Fusion background.
Would love to know how you made the stylophone sound so epic (reverb, chorus?) Loon is looking class with its bold patterned black and white and a strong red eye focus point. We don't all need to be fancy and tropical :)
Glad you liked it! This time we really piled on the effects :D An MS-20 filter (we usually use an EQ instead), an LX-24 reverb, a stereo spreader and finally a tape simulation and a tremolo (both very subtle).
If I'm not mistaken the original version doesn't use a saxophone but a clarinet although this sounds similar, at least this is what I notice in their live performances of the 707 version
i hear a "live" performance from Neil Landstrumn on youTube, and i think i can pick out the loon samples in his set, i was trying to remember if was 808 state or FSOL where i hear loon samples first? LoL
This one was in my hears for a while ! Now I know what I'll try with my fresh TR8S ! Thanks Captain ! Just a further question: do you intent to show some examples of Jungle ? I'm puzzled about how to capture highly syncopated rythms...
So, I'm listening To Kiss Of Death...B side of New Order's Perfect Kiss.....and Steve's big drum machine moment is mixed very differently from the A side version.....and it sounds uncannily like the big percussion bit in this......I wonder did 808 state have a wee borrow. The bit in question lies just before half way in the piece when there's bugger all but drum machine.
Hi JackAcid, it would be way too much to write in a comment but we're actually thinking about making a video comparing the four big pad matrix sequencers (Squarp Hapax, Synthstrom Deluge, Oxi One, Polyend Play).
This is insane ❤ but...how the synth line goes in sync with the swinged drums? Is the synth line also swinged? It would be nice to hear the differences of the whole arrangement with and without the swing. But perhaps this is out of the scope of your video :)
Thanks! Yes there's also swing on the synth line. Showing the whole arrangement with and without swing is a really good idea if we ever get around to making that "Drum Machine 101" episode about swing :)
What chords are the pads please? & what synth is the lead sound? I have ju06a & sh01a so might be able to try and program this if you can tell me the chords. Cheers
Oh very nice! Wow what a surprise, I've really been looking /researching the Hapax the last 2 days, as looking for a sequencer and it seems like a good choice, how are you finding it? 808 state were one of my favourites back then, really enjoy your videos..
