Jeff Mills has quite a few tricks up his sleeve - and we're showing you a few of them step by step. There's lots to learn from "The Wizard" about performing on a drum machine, and that knowledge is not only applicable to Detroit Techno! Jeff originally used a Roland TR-909, we recreate the first minute of his performance live on the Behringer RD-9.

A most splendid video from the Captain!
I loaned Jeff Mills my TR909 when he did a gig at the Pelican Club in Aberdeen. His thin wiry hands moved like the wind all over my 909.
He has a 909 in the soma records hq in Glasgow too.
I’m amazed it was still in one piece when you got it back!
That 909 beings in a museum
Seeing it broken down like this makes Jeff's performance all the more awe-inspiring.
Seeing Jeff Mills do this live in the early hours of a Sunday morning after a long ass set, pretty special, the guy is a wizard of the 909. Love the video
His name was actually The Wizard when he started out as a DJ in Detroit
YESSSSS!!!!!! Fuel my brain w/ more ideas to put to use and take over the airwaves w/ Sounds of Acid Techno ! D
Best channel EVER for this type of thing
It's so simple in parts but all-together, improvised, at 134bpm? That's truely impressive
This is such a solid device. The old school tools were limited, but those limitations breed so much creativity.
Limitations breed creativity. I like that!!
The original 909 cant be tapped an step sequenced at the same time
May I suggest Plastikman - Spastik on the Rd-8 ? Also anything related to distorting that bassdrum with gain mixer distortion and or gabber would be nice ! I really like your pristine videos guys, keep it up !
Oh yeah some 90s Gabba or early hardcore would be nice! Would be funny to hear your prestine presentation style over some insanely distorted kicks and amen breaks 😄
Spastik is a masterpiece, as well as every Plastikman albums
@@TURBOGABBA you would need an old mackie mixer to do several signal re-injection of your kick drum, for a proper and authentic gabber kick
@@LouisSerieusementoh I always thought they just used an overdrive or distortion pedal or just turned the gain stage way up on the mixer. It’s not that complicated to get drum sounds to distort.
Anybody who like Jeff Mills is my best friend.
awesome breakdown!! Thanks :)
Thank you so much! I actually learned about the TR-909's total accent feature from one of your videos a few years ago ❤
Wow…. Doctor Mix is in da House !! Great to see him here on Captain Pikant. We are all Music-Lovers. So we are all on the same Channels…. We are never to Old to learn this stuff….. woohoo !!
Dr mix!
Every time I hear something on the 909 I appriciate it more and more.
All your videos are amazing but this is next level. Such a great breakdown. Thank you.
This is awesome, you've taught me so much about drum patterns
Much appreciated!!! All your videos rock and are spot on!
Amazing breakdown of a breathtaking performance, thank you for this video! Love this channel already!
Such great videos you're making here. I would be delighted to see this treatment for anything by the Chemical Brothers!
Great work, as usual!
And the RD-9 sounds sweet..
Wicked! Jeff Mills has always been my favourite Techno producer. I have an Atomic Jam ticket signed by him for my 30th birthday from 2002 @ Air nightclub, digbeth, Birmingham UK.
Fantastic stuff man. I always loved the TR-909 Workout but never understood the seemingly erratic adjustment of knobs and hitting of pads. This breakdown renewed and grew my appreciation for Jeff Mills's performance
I frickin lurv this channel!
Every time I see a new vid from the Captain I’m blown away at the level of presentation. Not only are we given information concisely, but our attention is held captive by the gorgeous animation and vivid colours.
I subscribed a month or two ago, but now I’ve joined the Patreon. The only way we can see more of this is if we give them a chance to quit their day jobs people!
This is wonderful in every way. Thank you!
This is dope. Please continue this series… Shonuff!
Wow, brilliant breakdown, awesome! Thanks for doing this!
Extraordinary video! And excellent drum machine!
What a great demo! Thank you.
Cooler Kanal, herzlichen Glückwunsch zu den 100k ;-)

Your channel and the style of your videos are amazing!
Great idea and execution for a tutorial! Thanks
This is super high quality, thanks a lot
Great content! Cant wait for more! I'm hoping for a bunch of PO - 12 Rhythm videos
So many great tips! Thank you for your videos, tehy are excellent!
Amazing, great work. It's surprising (really not surprising given it was 80s) how limited these early drum machines were for live performance
damn the RD9 sounds so cool, I'm impressed with the toms !
Great job! Thanks for this video.
the second kick on the first bar is such a good agressive detroit sound
Great video. Nice breakdown of how the original was created. Really highlights what a talented musician Jeff Mills is 🤘
This was so cool. I really like your explanation, very clear, also charming and entertaining. I am your 500th like on this video. I think I'll also subscribe.
thank you for this great video!
Captain, you just got another sub. Great work.
What an amazing video. Very good content.
Wow, I play guitar, and I'm definitely going to implement that timekeeping method into my picking technique. That looks really helpful.
Wie immer super gemacht
fantastic content!
Super interesting, thanks a lot! Subscribed.
Great video!
this is awesome thank you!
Great stuff! subscribed
Used to mess around in 1997 on the MC 303 like that too!
This is gold!
Amazing!!!! I'd love for you to continue this series with the rest of the video q; 😂
But seriously you'd have quite the job on your hands hahahaha

Great!
amazing
legendary machine
Hella cool video
The 909 does have a metronome. It's literally the guide button on the interface. For the metronome sound the rimshot is used. 🙂
great channel
I like the content!
An analysis of 'vertigo' by Eats Everything would be great.
Interesting to watch.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
Great 🎛️🥁📡🇧🇷
Subscribed, liked and hit the bell👍
Jeff Mills ❤❤❤
Would love to see some Prince patterns explained!
Any specific requests?
Please make more Digitakt videos
ah, would love to see squarepusher his eviscerate (version), or sarcacid part 2.
excellent format & explanation, great work here. Would have been even better with an original 909 but doesnt matter, very good content
Thank you so much! I agree, but sadly we don't have access to one. Although... I still have a kidney I could sell... ;)
@@CaptainPikant perfectly understandable, pretty rare gear. Honestly I think the rd is excellent for the demo, and sounds really good. In my opinion, the biggest difference with the original should have been about the tap button feeling.
Gold 🥇
Would be great a video about the Moog Dfam
WOW ! 👏👏👏
You guys could do an awesome live show. Part explanations, part performance. Just remember to bring a red shirt for the Kraftwerk bits ;)

This rules!
this is like drum machine 101
I can't wait to do this on my rd 9!
Never got why Jeff Mills mostly remained under the mainstream radar. I guess people are just deaf : - )
@@dxtrs_mnpltr Shows what you know : - )
@@dxtrs_mnpltr I really can’t stand this kind of response.
Dexterous Manipulator . Hey bro, really approve of your comment. Have been smashing plastikman again after all these years. Real techno is an aquired taste. Most people dont understand. Their loss, my opinion. You "get it" clearly.
Great vid! I'm new to your channel, so apologies if you've covered this already, but where are you getting the charts for drum patterns and, if you create them yourself, is there a template? Also, I would be curious about your take on the best drum machines with multiple outs? I like the vermona, from your vid, and currently have (and love) the MFB 522, although it's a little limited, and mostly use it triggered externally via midi.
Yes I make these myself, they're available on our Patreon :) Best drum machine is really hard to answer, it all depends what you're looking for and what sounds you like.
IS that breakdown in written format shown at the beginning available for download anywhere? Would love to read it.
You can find it on our Patreon :)
Awesome seeing this magic broken down. What is the pattern quantised on? 16th notes?
Yes, since the pattern runs on a normal 1x tempo multiplier, it is quantised to 16th notes :)
@@CaptainPikant thanks man:))
Instant like
learned a lot as i try to traverse the mc-909 which btw is a drum machine on steroids...
More videos pls thx
This, is an analysis of having “soul”.
cool
Can you do some electro 808 patterns etc?
In the beginning of the video you show a document. Sorry if I missed the info but is that available somewhere? Thx.
Hi Mindstuff, that's one of our transcriptions we made for our Patrons. You can check our Patreon page, there are a few free ones on there as well that you can download without a pledge.
Can you please do a video on how to an make electro breakbeat track from beginning to end. In full detail.
My, I would really, really, really like to understand the logic behind the drum patterns in the song Future Days, by Can.
isnt the anchor better suited at the last bar as the indicator for the first beat on the first bar?
I think it's more common to put the anchor at the end (like the hi-hat on step 16 in Daft Punk's "Da Funk"), but I wouldn't say it's necessarily better. Just do what sounds good to you :)
can't a Firmware update make the insturment selection buttons act like triggers ? asking for the RD8 also :D
I suppose that's possible... It would be awesome if you could have a latching button combo that initiates a finger drumming mode while the sequencer is running.
I heard once a pianist say “electronic instruments ain’t real musical instruments” …yeah…
What is the strangest digital & analog multi frequency phased organ available (or a midi plug in for pc bootable for mobile if you'regood at programs)?
