Learn these 909 Beats! 7 Iconic Beats Recreated

- Опубліковано 14 чер 2024
- The legendary Roland TR-909 is heard on countless records.
This video is a tutorial on how to program 7 iconic TR-909 beats step by step:
0:00 Introduction
0:40 Madonna - Vogue
2:10 Phil Collins - Take Me Home
4:45 Soul II Soul - Keep on Moving
6:03 Inner City - Good Life
7:10 Daft Punk - Revolution 909
8:23 Faithless - God is a DJ
9:30 Bjork - Hunter
On Hunter what Mark Bell and Björk are doing is that that they use the combinations of accents to have four different levels of accents and create swells. So unaccented, global accent, accented and accented + global accent is used to have four levels of accents in that order to create an effect of a roll that gets louder. So when you are doing the unaccented, accented, unaccented, accented series of four beats that you have a couple of times, then BOTH the second ones should have a global accent, and then you get that swelling roll Hunter has.
Other than that, good job!
Hi Lennart! Love your vids on the 909 - whoever reads this, go check out Lennarts vids on the 909!
Really appreciate your input here. Here I use three velocity levels here and found that to be sufficient to get the swell. I did mess around with the unaccented+global accent but I thought I was closer with what I show here. Guess its a matter of what your ears tell you. Im going to pin this comment - folks give this a try a see what sounds best, use your ears and be creative!
Thank you again very much for the comment Lennart - Im a fan of your work!
@@ksmusiclounge1648 Thanks!
Lennart forgot to mention that the potentiometer for the accent has to be set to 10 o'clock so that the 4 different volumes really increase evenly!
Greetings from Germany
TIP: If the bass drum doesn't have enough power, set the accent poti to 2 o'clock.
This is the opposite of the 10 o'clock setting, with a slightly more uneven rise in volume but much more end volume.
Ok I will give this a try. This is really a gem of a thread - knowledge on the 909 thats really hard to come by. Much appreciated!
Wow. I just assumed it was sequenced externally from a tracker or something.
I am female. I trained as a classical singer, sang opera, and have a doctorate in voice performance. I've been teaching singing for over 30 years. Before Covid I sang and played keys in a rock band for about 5 years. At 62, I am a keyboard player, drummer and I'm writing songs using Bitwig and an MPC one. I'm loving every minute of it - way better for my aging mind than crossword puzzles! Thanks for the video!
Hi hello. I am a musician / female producer and audio engineer, bassist. (Trained, interned, worked in analog board / outboard tape op studios during the 90s through early 2k’s). We exist. I have the tr8s and the tr-09. I found as much as I love the both of them I have been playing drums in real time on my mpc live with the time control off for a lot of projects these days. Came here for some juice and inspiration to go back into the tr8s and do some programming. I’m from the era, so really nice to see this break down of hunter, etc. thank you.
Sophia welcome! YT was telling me in my channel statistics that literally 100% of my viewers were men - which I found hard to believe.
Thanks for sharing - impressive experience. Hunter is actually really kind in that the kick and snare are hard panned left and right so its easier to suss out whats going on.

Whats and npc comment? 😅
@@nandorrr dude shut up
I’m watching and I’m a female (beginner) producer too
I'm a female following your channel. Great video!
Welcome! So we actually have 2 (!) females here! Mind blown 💪 In the next video I have to show you a screenshot of what UA-cam says about my audience - it literally says 0 females. And yet here you are! I knew it! Thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel!
Me too

This is the best drum machine tutorial I’ve seen. You get right to it. No bs. You show and tell every step, and that really helps when one is still struggling to learn the controls by heart. This is so great to have these Classic beats correctly executed, and given to us so complete. Thank you!
The Björk beat was brilliant! I love how she made the 909 morph into Björk’s minion.
Thanks man, really appreciated. Im trying to make the vids the way I like to watch them - waste no time and get to the point 👍
amazing ! a great throwback to revolution 909 , needed to play it right after - and you hit the spot, good job on hearing and finding the right swing amount !
Thank you Roman! Always use your ear - whatever feels right, be creative 🤘
The Hunter, one of the best songs ever, and always wondered how that beat was made.
👍 just a kick and a snare and a lot of knob-twiddling
Revolution 909 is such classic, always happy to hear that
Yeah… thanks man!
Fabulous! As 80s/90s kid I have a soft spot for these grooves. Vogue, Keep on Moving , Good life are my absolute favourites.
Thanks for clear instructions, any quick-witted wanna-be producer can make use of it on any drum machine.
Greetings form Poland, Dude!
Thanks man! Same here - 80s kid as well 😎🤘
Ahhh the classics, thank you!
You are very welcome mate!
Love this format. More videos like this plsssssss
Coming up soon-ish 🤦🏻♂️ editing taking forever…
This is gold. You must do more. With other drum machines and new patterns
Thanks Emiliano!

Another female 909 fan checking in 😉 tbh I haven’t seen your channel before, but this video came up in my recommended & I’m glad it did!
Thanks Sarah for the kind words! Glad you made it - hopefully you will like my vids. All things music here.
I really appreciate this. I'm always looking for inspiration. Very informative 🎉
Glad you liked it!
My first love. The 909!
Legend!
Amazing how you can keep yourself from tweaking the snare while hunter patterns play :)
Thanks so much for this great video, I was here for the Bjork pattern but its all really interesting to see.
Thanks Bite! Really appreciated!
I don't even have a TR-909 but found this demonstration super helpful for making beats/grooves in abelton. Thanks!
That’s so awesome! Glad it helped!
I got the 909 from Behringer, really recommended for little money!
Yup its a good entry ticket into the 909 world.
@@michaelmueller9816 now why did you recommend that over the new mini tr09 from Roland?
@@BLAZE45 Roland tr09 is a toy, the buttons are too small! no single outputs are also a nogo for me.
Thank you so much for this great video! 😄
You are very welcome my friend!
Great. Thx so much. Will try em out on tr8s and drumbrute. Lokking forward thx again!
Glad I helped!
What a beautiful looking 909. That thing has held up well.
Yeah it’s a beaut
Excellent walk through! Still to date now in 2024 I still consider myself dawless minus a few small synth apps on 4 separate tablets each having their own channel on a multi board. Step sequence will never be replaced in my method as those drum machines are still in my regular setup.
"Vogue!" Hehe, I remember it was one of the first grooves I put into Octamed,l an 8 track tracker on the Amiga back in the early 90:s.
Before I got to own any real Synth or drum machines.
Got the 909-sounds from other songs made in Octamed...
It really had that fantastic groove and together with Technotronics it really put the 909 into use for the more commercial dance music. Kinda started the "euro dance" sound of the 90:s. And the dance sound in general. These iconic hihat and snare patterns!
Yes, blackbox kind of did it too with "ride on time" , but it was a mixture of other drum sounds with mostly just 909 snares and maybe hihats.
Thank you for the hunter ❤
Glad you liked it! I forgot to mention - the kick and snare are panned hard left and right - which makes for a cool swirly effect when listened to on headphones. And also makes it easier to transcribe.
i exist poggers woman girl human female
So UA-cam was wrong after all! Welcome! Glad to have you among us! Before making this video I was looking at my channel stats and under audience it said - 0 😂 so I was like - “wait what? Zeeero?? There has got to be at least ONE girl!”
Omg a female
I’m so glad there’s still human females proud to admit it.
Lmaooo looks like she’s the only one.
Well, to be honest I have no idea how YT is running its statistics, but it tells me there are exactly 0 females watching my channel - but that is VERY wrong, so I am super happy its not a total sausage fest here…
❤😮love the tutorial!!!
Thanks so much Brian for your kind words!
Brilliant video k.
Thank you!!!
Nice, thanks. Appreciate your excellent beat making. I have a Drum Brute with a similar set up. But I also use loops sometimes and then add to them for a custom beat.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Moving from here, absolute classic
🙃
I’m with everyone else here. Great job. Keep them coming. Dig deep … explore more patterns(please) and other drum machines
Thanks mate! Any particular patterns you would like to see?
Best 909 video!
Thanks man!
I'm pretty sure I exist although after hearing your stats I guess I can't be certain. Thanks for the excellent video either way.
Thanks a lot Kasey! The numbers have gone up signicantly over the past 30 days - from 0 to a staggering 0.5% :-)
I also love Bjork very much.
Hello friend, in the first video I watched on your channel I signed up, I'm from Brazil and I think you're there in Europe so close to the war, and sharing one of the beautiful things that life gives us, musical art, congratulations again, peace !
Thank you so much for your kind words and greetings to Brazil. Yes Im in Europe but luckily far from the war although its terrifying to fathom that we have a belligerent maniac terrorizing the world in this day and age… I whole-heartedly agree that music is one of the most beautiful things this world has to offer. Peace!
Faithless forever! Rest in peace, Maxy.
RIP Maxy
That’s a beautiful 909
Thanks man!
The 909 is the gabber machine❤
Very entertaining! 🙋🏻♀️
Sarah! Thank you VERY much! YT was so very wrong about my audience 😁
Edit: Just checked out your channel - instant subscribe! Holy s#%t! I dabbled a bit in electronics mostly to repair my vintage synths but your stuff is next level.
Thanks 🎉
You are very welcome Mister! More stuff in the pipeline!

Great video buddy
Thanks Mas for the kind words!
I used to mix Revolution 909 & God Is A DJ together in sets!
BMP is close enough
I’m also a female. I have a rd-9 I’m learning to use. :-) thanks for the demo on the og machine. Awesome
Curious, do the knob settings like decay etc, do they save with each pattern? Or do you have to change the knob settings to your liking for different patterns?
Great job!, shame none are songs that I’m particularly fond of. Hope to this is successful enough you consider doing other classic80s 909 songs,
Thanks! What songs would you like to see?
hi i'm somewhat of a producer and i love 80s and 90s stuff
i am female, that is why i wrote this comment
Thanks very much! The 80s seem to having a major comeback - eg John Mayors latest album… Fun times back then.

Yeah its in museum quality really :-) thanks man for the kind words!
Can you do a video of show me love by Robin S
Can we do CR-78, TR-808, TR-707, DMX, and LM-1 drumbeats next?😄
it would be a great video without the tutorials but having them is just the icing on the cake 👌
😂 thanks Bruno!
I am programming 909 samples into my s2000 i wonder if i can make these loops in my s2000?
Nice tutorial though. Vogue, no snare? Two times closed hhat?

This is the best tr909 on the planet k❤️
I have a hunch why you would say that Terry…😜

Just thx
You are very welcome my friend!
Where would you place Poing from Rotterdam Termination Source and the music from Atari Teenage Riot?
These 2 acts used/uses the TR-909 all the time.
Please let me know.
I remember Poing from Mtv 😂 the other one I dont know
I'd place them in Rotterdam and Berlin about four years after the 909 had become a staple of dance music.
Giiirl here
💪👍 welcome!
Great stuff. Although, I was waiting for you to filter the snappiness of the snare for “The Hunter”!
Ha! Yeah, I resisted. The urge was strong. But I exercised restraint. 🤦🏻♂️😂
Can u drop some house beats that you like on a tr o 8. ( 808 ). House .. funk .. cheers happy easter
Sure anything in particular you would like?
on the headhunter song, were the global accents already stepped in? Because I don't see you touching the Global accent (total accent)button.
My man down bad
U SUPER GOOD U DEFENATELY NEED TO EARN 100000 SUBS
Thanks Shivam for these kind words! Really appreciated!
I am a female and love this machine❤❤❤

I exist but this is the first time finding your channel
Thanks for the comment - so technically that means you were not included in the YT analytics as of the date of this video. In the mean time, the number went up by a staggering 0.5% :-)
@@ksmusiclounge1648
Wow! I'm honored to such a statistic 😂
13:30 near the climax of the song he changes up the pattern a bit, with different accents maybe? and probably adjusts the knobs or mixer EQ, because the snares get to have a really sharp "back and forth" sound on some performances (also compare the Portishead song "machine gun") ua-cam.com/video/hDzAyu8i9Wo/v-deo.html
Havent seen this live performance, but yeah at the end he seems to introduce triplets - quite different from the studio version. These triplet patterns are there in the studio version as well, one right after the intro and then towards the end, but they seem a but different to the live version.
it misses a 5th pattern with only the accented snare on 1 4 7 10 - but then i think there might also be another pattern with BD -6th that changes back to 5th at the end of the track, near 3min 20 - it's fun :)
There is actually a tripplet pattern as well but I didnt get into that as it appears just twice in the song.
👌
Thanks a lot! Much appreciated!
Thanks for the video. Did people here actually try out to program these beats as explained in the video? If I do, I get completely different beats from the ones sounding in the video. You're missing some steps in your tutorial, and mix up terms like open and closed hi hats. A bit confusing...!
The Bjork pattern feels like metal drums
Top comment! 😂
Hey I am a female producer and your initial statement actually surprised me. Especially that the video is only 1month old.
Hey! Yup, 1 month ago I had cca 250 subs and my UA-cam analytics showed that I had 0 female viewers - which seemed not right. That has since grown to a staggering 0.5% :-) anyway, hope you stay!
The #RolandTR909 is my religion, for real. I adore its sound and groove and also the workflow and its "limited" but for sure not limiting feature set 🙂
---
One thing I noticed immediately is that you have the Total Accent knob all the way up! Which literally KICKS A**, hehe. But you're not really using the total accent "instrument", right? Why so?
I am - in Hunter, without it you cant get that bouncy feel the original has, without it is really flat and boring. Once the total accent kicks in its a totally different groove.
As Igor Stravinsky - one of the greatest composers of all time - said:
"My freedom will be so much the greater and more meaningful the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles.”
Great words - true creative freedom only exists with well defined borders. Without them, you descent into chaos and option paralysis.
I see bjork, I click
We exist!
🎉👍 welcome Michelle!
How did you know the bpm of songs?
Tap tempo
How did you copy the measure 4 times?
Its a secret move only a very few select 909 masters are privy to 😂 select the pattern you want to copy to, shift+11 (copy), select patter you want to copy from, hit enter, done
Man, more drum pattern lessons please!!!
Thanks man! Suggestions?
Madonna "Vogue" IMHO is one of the best commercial dance tracks of all time.
100% agree! Instantly recognisable, grooves hard AF. Legend.
I prefer Into The Groove
Inner City's is better.
Madonna had to pay them some money for using their melody on the first verse.
@@sergiolams Ok you've got me on that one........
I don't think any money changed hands, and nor was Kevin Saunderson given a writing credit for the Madonna song, but there is a similarity between the first line of Madonna's verse "Look around..." and the chorus of "Ain't Nobody Better". I think that Shep Pettibone and Madonna were desperately trying to be hip in '89 so probably listened to lots of house tracks in the studio (no doubt including the trio of smashes that Inner City released as techno hit the mainstream) while they were putting Vogue together. The use of the 909 was a transparent attempt at making a club track.
What went almost unnoticed for 20 years was that Vogue's horn stabs were sampled from an old Salsoul disco track that Shep Pettibone had himself mixed back in the '70s. Legal action was taken about that 22 years after Vogue came out.
I exsist. :)

Yup, true that! As Stravinski said - “My freedom will be so much the greater and more meaningful the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles. The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees one's self of the chains that shackle the spirit."

Polite as I am, I always like to address the ladies first, but upon seeing this I was like “why should I do that for, no females here apparently - but lets make sure”. Aaand sure enough UA-cam is wrong! 😂💪
???
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
What about Huey Lewis and The News?
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when 'Sports' came out in ’83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.
The 909 is 40 years old now ! Hard to believe those thumping beats it became synonymous with, ‘could’ have been made as long ago as 1983! They just weren’t 🤷♂️
Yeah they are timeless!
Skinny Puppy released an album with 909 beats an '84, and Larry Heard made house beats on a 909 in 1986. Check out the deep house classic 'Can You Feel It' by Mr Fingers if you don't know it. (It also has a prominent ride cymbal more commonly recognised as being from the 707, but I think that some 909 models had different samples to other editions).

I lost count already. Wooow. Just wow! Welcome!
