Can you imagine being a boy in the Midwest, in the 50's and 60's, blind and African American, creating your own musical genre, because there was no music like that, addicted to drugs, discriminated against for your color and disowned for your music??? Dont do it??? Well, it's another day at the office for *Ray Charles Robinson* Fly high "Brother Ray", and may the Lord be with you
Had this at my daughter Georgia’s funeral, used to play this to her in my belly and she would kick me so gently, I’m sure she knew it was her song. Such a beautiful song, sadly never thought the lyrics would now haunt me so beautifully. ‘other arms reach out to me, other eyes smile tenderly, still In peaceful dreams i see, a road leads back to you’ will treasure this song for always 👼🏻🤍
It's sad knowing that Ray was once banned from doing shows in his home state of Georgia, because he refused to play segregated shows. This is his gift to the people that once shunned him, a gift returned to him when the Georgia State legislature decided to name his version of this song their official state song.
Just so you know, the song was written by Hoagy Carmichael in 1930 and is about Hoagy's sister, named Georgia (he himself was a native of Indiana). Although a romantic and very inspirational story; it is not the truth.
I proudly had the Pastor sing this song at my Mom's funeral service 11/16/2024. She was born in 1929 and her name was Georgia. It was the highlight of the service. and now whenever they hear this song they will think of this tribute to my Mom.
I just thought "this is amazing. My husband is gonna LOVE it." Then I remembered he isn't here. Passed away almost four years ago. And I can't stop loving him.
Makes me cry whenever I hear it. I had the privilege of standing next to Ray at his piano in 1965 when he played a concert at Northwestern University. This was in 1965, olden times, and the girl had to be back in their dorms by 11pm. Ray was several hour late. There were not many people left at the end. I walked down to his piano, didn't touch him but said "I love you man". The genius .... RAY CHARLES!
Ray Charles would have turned 90 on September 23. 2020. That's why I've listened to almost all of his videos on UA-cam and now I know why I became a jazz musician: I'm 78 years old. In the 50`s and 60`s there was a program on "Radio Luxemburg" between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in which mostly R&B with Ray Charles was played. I was totally electrified and never missed a program. I then learned the saxophone and double bass autodactically and later played with many well-known jazz musicians in Germany and Europe, so I can look back on a very fulfilled life with countless and unique experiences. Thank you Ray, You were my mentor and "BLACK LIVES BETTER"
Im a musician from the French West Indies(Blues Guitarist) and I wanna let the Black American people know that i truly love them, i will never find the proper words to express my gratitude toward them for what they have achieved in the field of Music. Thank you guys for your amazing culture!
I'm 80 years old but this 70s compilation makes me feel like I'm 20 again! I couldn't help but sway to the rhythm! 🎶A lot of the songs take me back to specific places and people I was with at the time.😘
Love that song and love him. As a student at Ole Miss in 1967, I was fortunate to see him in concert at the Ole Miss Coliseum. Long time ago, but I remember how great he was to this day!
I was also an Ole Miss Rebel in the 1960's and I saw Ray in New Orleans as he was always one of my favorite musicians. He always sang from his heart and soul, and we will always have a part of, and memory of ray, through his special life and his everlasting gift to humanity through his music. This tune brings back a special memory and played a part in my deciding not to reenlist in the Navy. I was due to be discharged in less than a month and had just returned to the staging area after a week or so of long range recon. Someone had tuned the radio to Armed Forces radio and I heard the DJ say "This is for you Georgia boys" and I then heard Georgia On My Mind for the first time. It brought tears to my eyes and gave me a case of homesickness I couldn't shake.
This song played on the radio when my cousins SSGT. Jude R. Jonaus body was returned to us from Iraqi freedom. He was stationed out in GA. Glad you did not reenlist

I visited Atlanta Georgia in 1984 and I was told that it was not a great idea for me to visit stone mountain, at that time without a tour group, I learned a very valuable lesson about what could happen to me as a young woman of color? I then understood why this song has such significance for people of color!
This song holds a special place in my heart, as it brings back memories of Sunday mornings spent with my family, who are currently far away from me. I miss them terribly.
It's not just a song about Georgia. It's really about having left your home location, but acknowledging the pull and memories of your home town/country/state etc.

i was honored to see ray Charles sing this song at an all-day concert at Yankee stadium, I believe in 1965. he was the headliner. Little Stevie wonder also performed that day. The 2nd best version I heard of this song, was about 10 years ago, Stevie Winwood did it with just his Hammond organ. awesome.
I was going to work to OH an on my car radio a announcement for Ray Charles was going to preform in Lorain Oh that night so I immediately bought 2 tickets for that's night show. We went and blown out of our mind seeing this legend 10 rows back and in the middle of th audience. What a show he put on!!!
Ray tells this story with such passion and insight it’s like he is here with us in 2021 speaking to the collective consciousness. Georgia heard you Ray.
The exciting thing is when Ray sings this you never know how this will go. He never ever does this quite the same way. God rest his soul __ there will never be another. I love you Ray.

@@selfishcapitalist3523 as somebody who has lived and traveled through many parts of Georgia my whole life, I can say that Georgia is a purple state for sure. Atlanta and some of the other urban areas are very progressive, but the rural areas are FUCKED. literally less than a month ago I was riding through southern-ish macon and saw a huge confederate flag hung from a ~50 foot flag pole. the building that was flying it was a business that damn near looked abandoned it was in such bad shape, much like any house that waves that flag. but Atlanta is a bastion of progress in the swamp that is the deep south, and the sheer amount of people concentrated in the Atlanta area is enough to cancel out the cracker-ass rural areas
I’m big into heavy metal and country music, but this is still one of the best and most beautiful songs I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. Rest In Peace, Brother Ray.
If I could film me listening to this epic hair-raising vocal performance you wouldn't believe it. Every time Seal sings shotgun in the skies then the high note I get chills. Ty so very much for Moving me through your vocal prowess. 2 the both of you that is.❤❤❤

I don't care what anyone says. Ray Charles is Rock and Roll. Look at him swaying, transported by the blues, jazz, bebop, that Bob Seger and others re-energized. It's "that same old back beat rhythm that really gets me in the..." Huey Lewis

RIP Charles, I feel very fortunate to have seen Zachary Richard in concert before his stroke. He did some amazing Charles covers, Pink Floyd inspired songs and zydeco. I have been studying piano, for 2 yrs now. Have a piano and 3 keyboards and an FM mod.
I was born in 1997 and sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong century. But GOD doesn’t make mistakes. It’s a blessing to be able to live to his age.
First time to hear the original, by the one and only Ray Charles. Just always knew the Micheal Bolton rendition...glad to discover this original song with so much soul and rhythm from a pure heart! Namibia representing...
No matter how it's scored I never seem to feel it, though I can go through the motions on occasion. This particular performance, however, opens it up, so Ray can give the pianist a lesson in what harmonies he was hearing, how his Blues tradition had flavored the piece in a perfectly appropriate way. I sure learned from it and will return.
This man is blind, playing a piano, singing, entertaining, and leading his band... Nothing is impossible.

Who else cry’s a bit when they hear this song by one of the greatest if not the greatest musician of all time ‼️🙏🏾💪🏾
Georgia, The late great Rep Lewis is proud of you for delivering us from another 4 yrs of shame. Thank you
I’m big into heavy metal and country music, but this is still one of the best and most beautiful songs I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing.
Rest In Peace, Brother Ray.

Who is loving this in 2020? Great song filled with emotion. There never ever will be another Ray C.
Listen to Ray my whole Life
Me! 😊👂🏼
Im not, this guy is a bad person.
NEVER EVER!!!!!
2021 man!!!!!!
I don't care what anyone says. Ray Charles is Rock and Roll. Look at him swaying, transported by the blues, jazz, bebop, that Bob Seger and others re-energized. It's "that same old back beat rhythm that really gets me in the..." Huey Lewis
It really doesn't get better than this, does it? I saw him live in the 1970's and have never forgotten it!
Por duas vezes, fui a show do Ray Charles na cidade de Clearwater Fl, Ruth Eckerd Hall. MARAVILHA!
Ray Charles deserves nothing but respect.
Yes, Ray, Georgia is on my mind. Rev. Warnock and Stacey Abrams will be getting a donation from me today. RIP.
Brother Ray, giving us that melody
Love all his songs, one of my favorite songs, he's a true genius

I honestly love your posts and always enjoy reading them in my lonely spare time. I'm so sorry I invaded your privacy, but I'd love to be friends with someone who could share such sensitive post content, which means you're a woman of integrity. I wanted to add you but sending you a friend request without your consent is inappropriate because I'm a public figure and it wouldn't take much either, I'd appreciate it if you send me a friend request now so we can be friends and text better here on UA-cam🙏🙏🙏
Didn't know he could make this song even better. What a true legend in music.

Meus pesames!

Hello Lisa, I see happiness all around you, can I please share from it?
RIP Charles, I feel very fortunate to have seen Zachary Richard in concert before his stroke. He did some amazing Charles covers, Pink Floyd inspired songs and zydeco. I have been studying piano, for 2 yrs now. Have a piano and 3 keyboards and an FM mod.
Woke up to Georgia going blue... needed to hear some sweet Ray this Am.

I was born in 1997 and sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong century. But GOD doesn’t make mistakes. It’s a blessing to be able to live to his age.
Quando o dom e o talento ocupam o mesmo ser , o resultado é esse . sensacional .
You got that right, brother! Thank you Georgia, thank you Ray, thank you God!
First time to hear the original, by the one and only Ray Charles. Just always knew the Micheal Bolton rendition...glad to discover this original song with so much soul and rhythm from a pure heart! Namibia representing...

Hello 👋
Ray Charles is one of my favorites to chill to. This Georgia on my Mind is version is great like all of them from Ray! Love you Ray.
The most BEAUTIFUL Ray Charles Song…….Georgia on my Mind!!❤
My grandfather is heavy on my heart and mind (as he always is) and this gem came to mind. He was from Hamilton, Georgia.😥
How are you doing today?
Hello pretty lady how are you doing today
No matter how it's scored I never seem to feel it, though I can go through the motions on occasion. This particular performance, however, opens it up, so Ray can give the pianist a lesson in what harmonies he was hearing, how his Blues tradition had flavored the piece in a perfectly appropriate way. I sure learned from it and will return.
well said
Wow.
I saw his rétrospective yesterday.
What a MAN.
