    Never seen those before, but they seem like the answer to my problem! Thanks for another very informative video! I've come to the point, where before just about any little job, I'll check out your channel to see if you've got a video on the subject. Not that I couldn't do it without, but your tips always help me do a better job and to do it right the first time!

    Another quality video ***** very impressed by the strength of these! I would be very interested to see this test as a comparison against Spring Toggle Fixings, Metal Drivas and Plasterboard Rawl Plugs. I know this is the second video you have done on the subject but I think a lot of people suffer real anxiety and uncertainty when it comes fixing to plasterboard. Anyway thanks for the videos and keep up the good work :)

      Thanks Chloe, I have filmed a few videos using these fixings and also comparing some of the cheaper plasterboard fixings, once I edit them I will upload them ;-) I'm currently busy working two plant shutdowns but will sort them as soon as I get chance. I'll try and do a video comparing the holding strength of the different types of plasterboard fixings when I get chance. Thanks for the comment ;-)

    Hi really appreciate the video. How do you know how far to drill into the plasterboard? Is it the length of the screw? Thank you.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  3 роки тому

      You need to drill right through the plasterboard, then insert the fixing and then screw into the fixing

    Hello. What kind of fixings would you recommend for hanging heavy scaffolding board shelves with cast iron brackets to a plasterboard wall? Is it better to try to fix the brackets to the studs in the wall or use plasterboard fixings?

    I tried putting up a floating corner shelf from Argos and I got the bracket nice and level and strong against the wall. I slid the shelf on and went to screw the 2 screws into the already made holes for you to attach it to the bracket but for some reason the screws didn't connect properly. What exactly do they screw into? There's no actual hole it screws into just loosely into the metal. Not sure if the thread was gone but it just wasn't right. I know a floating corner shelf is only good for light stuff but it shouldn't have any slight movement.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  3 роки тому +1

      If you were using snap toggles or zip fix fixings they should screw into the captive metal piece at the back. You should then be able to tighten the screws tight, so that they grip the plasterboard.
      If they will not tighten, it is likely that the threads have been stripped.

    • @Thefortniteproyx
      @Thefortniteproyx 3 роки тому

      @@ultimatehandyman no sorry I meant the bracket on the wall was fine but the actual pre made holes in the shelf that connect the shelf to the bracket have gone :(

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  3 роки тому

      @@Thefortniteproyx Oh, OK. It's hard to say without seeing the shelf, but it sounds like it might be faulty.
      Normally the screws holding the shelf to the bracket do not really do much, I have even seen some shelves with no screws inserted to hold them to the brackets.

    • @Thefortniteproyx
      @Thefortniteproyx 3 роки тому

      @@ultimatehandyman ah ok, yes might be now. I did have it up on another wall originally so maybe I've destroyed the thread by unscrewing and screwing again

      I'd use these- ua-cam.com/video/qIiXmqmko-w/v-deo.html
      The problem with frame fixings or wall plugs and screws is that you can pull the plasterboard in if overtightened.
      I hope this helps ;-)

      It depends on many variables, such as the thickness of the plasterboard, the fixings used and the spacing of the fixing holes etc.

    I'd love to know where you were trained or by whom, because all your videos demonstrate that your knowledge is the basis for how easy you make it. Been subbed to you on my other channel for over 8 years now and you are my "go to" you tube channel for DIY. I also learned how to use Adobe video Editing thanks to you giving me advise on your webspace. Thank you so much. It means a great deal to me, because when the monetary system fails, we shall need engineers like yourself who share knowledge & problem-solve with no financial benefit to themselves. My lecturer Jacque Fresco*, made this apparent to me which sounded very strange at first. But you prove that to share knowledge, experience & to help others supersedes rapacity which the world is sadly still hinged upon to this day.

    How do you know what diameter screws to use? I've bought some floating cube shelves and they're heavy. They came with no fixtures or fittings. How do I know what to use?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  5 років тому

      It depends on the holes in the brackets, you need screws that will fit through the hole and fit flush (if the heads are countersunk). Sometimes it is best to take a bracket to your local hardware store, to ensure you get the correct diameter screws.

    This is the MOST HELPFUL video on this topic that I’ve found. Thank you so much! I have two questions;
    -
    1. If you happen to hit a stud, will a snap toggle work?
    2. Is the snap toggle as strong as it would be if you used a screw in a stud?
    Thank you!

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  4 роки тому +1

      1. If you hit a stud, just use a standard wood screw and screw it into the stud.
      2. No. There is no plasterboard fixing that can hold the weight that a stud can, as you are relying on the plasterboard- which is very weak.
      Thanks for the comment 👍

      For dot and dab walls you can use
      Rigifix- ua-cam.com/video/xaYfs3lr1jI/v-deo.html
      Grip it fixings ( you might also need the undercutting tool) ua-cam.com/video/szx7nMRZSIY/v-deo.html
      or there are a couple of other suitable fixings such as the corefix

    I would only add it would pay to check for studs first. You're assuming the second bracket is NOT going to hit a stud - so you would have to use a standard wood screw that may look differently than the one on the right. I hate to buy any more hardware than I have to on simple jobs like this.
