- Detailed review of the 2023 GWM Tank 300 Ultra, including 2.0-litre turbo engine, handling, ride quality, interior, running costs and driving.
Last time around, we reviewed the GWM Tank Hybrid off-road and found it to be remarkably capable despite affordable pricing that undercuts the Isuzu MU-X, Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest. This time, we’re reviewing the Tank 300 Ultra in 2.0-litre turbo petrol form without the hybrid system, with a focus for on-road driving dynamics.

One major catch: payload. It’s just 394kg on the hybrid or 446kg on the non-hybrid seen here. You can’t carry much before you’re hitting that low ceiling.
Exactly. Essentially unviable as a tow vehicle - allowing 30kg for a towbar and 150kg for tow ball download (10% of a 1500 kg van), 100kg for a driver and you're left with 166kg for everything else you want to carry.... (Hope you're not planning on taking the wife and kids with you)
It’s around 50kg less than a Wrangler. How many people do you hear complaining about that car’s payload?
So why there is people buying Jimny if payload matters most?
@@Harrychambers1 That's a falacious argument. No one in their right mind would buy Jeep foe several reasons. 1. Compliance with ACL. 2. See 1.
@@jtxty9010 Doesn't matter most, but it's a consideration that may not me front of mind. It should be.
Test drive one today
I’m sold .
These are fking awesome drives like a dream Tech is seriously awesome .
It’s different, not boring and I like it .
HUGE cult following building .
FUN to modify.
And a it’s a BIG fuck you to some of the more expensive brands that having been ripping you off your whole life .
CHINA : IM IMPRESSED.
But is the fuel consumption too much
So it's better off-road and onroad than most of the competitors in the price range...and it's not even a diesel.simply amazing
Have been shopping for a vehicle for 4 months. Test drove many including GWM Canon and SsangYong Musso (which I liked better than the Canon) but when I hopped in this and took it for a very long test drive it hit the wow factor and after much scrutinizing I was sold! It is a luxurious and hitech vehicle on the inside and rock solid enough on the outside. A great vehicle for long touring and offroad travel. The only downside the poor mileage but on unleaded that's no big deal! Last drove a F-250 in 94 and this baby feels way more comfortable and capable than that old work horse! Thanks for the honest review!
I reckon they'll sell a load of these. Competitive price. Proper 4WD with body-on-frame design, coil springs, and lockers. Cool retro looks; bit of a cross between a Defender and a Wrangler.
Interesting they couldn't get better fuel economy out of it. Those numbers are much the same as a Wrangler. I guess there is no getting around the brick-like aerodynamics.
Payload and tow capacity is a bit weak, but shouldn't be a problem for most.
😂That fuel consumption is pretty standard for the type of suv. Form wrangler JK to JL.
I do own one never regret.I so happy with it's utility and performance on and off road
Brilliant narrative. One small oversight not mentioned, was the combined power output of the hybrid unit; 254kws and 615nms!
💯
Nice I was going to say the same thing
Just got a demo one from a Perth dealer. Eldest daughters first car. At 6'2, I hope she fits in it. She's 18, and learned to drive in a 1974 Lincoln Continental coupe. Now, that is a tank.
Does she fit? Good space for tall people?
Yes, I would like to know if your daughter finds there is enough space, my two sons are 6'4 and 6'7.
@@sharonwood8234 maybe a bit late but I would say get them to go and sit in one. I'm 6'3, though more legs than torso, and I have to put the seat as low as it goes and back as far as it goes to be comfortable. Once it's there though, it's great. Plenty of headroom for me though, so should be fine for anyone in that direction.
People talking about reliability, 8/10 big name brands all have reliability issues, especially in the 4WD sector, Ford, Range Rover, Jeep, all have multiple vehicle models with huge issues, Engine, motor mounts, transmission.
Agree that’s why 99% of serious off road vehicles are Toyotas. I’d still trust the cars brands you mentioned over the tank though.
@@andyc86 Toyota reliability is a myth. They go wrong at the same rate as most other mainstream cars - the difference is you have to sue Toyota to get them to fix it.
Can we all say DPF?
@@Harrychambers1 DPF and EGR Delete is the first thing I do on all my diesels straight from the dealership never missed a beat in 300000kms never needed warranty on any Toyota I’ve owned.
@@andyc86Toyota? I’ve owned 70, 79, lc200…. Well they gave me nothing but all kind of issues
@@andyc86 you’ve been lucky, good job too because you’ve also voided your warranty “straight from the dealership”. 😂
Would have liked the review to have some off road driving, after all it does have front and rear diff lockers and seems capable.
Thanks for the meaningful review of the Haval Tank. I must say it appears superb value for money when compared to others in this class.
I love what GWM has done with this vehicle...
I swear, in pictures the stock version looks ok, but in person it's beautiful and way bigger than i imagined.
"It's almost downright swift". Nice turn of phrase 😆
Rather erudite, we thought.
Nice. Should sell very well.
If they can get enough of them I think it will.
will sell well, big time
If this is almost downright swift then the 254 Kw 610 Nm hybrid is rocket ship!
It’s Chinese lol
What it really looks like, is a modern Lada Niva.
And that's fine IMO
@@chasingcars agreed. And it’s a segment that doesn’t demand innovative design a la passenger EVs, compact hatches, etc
Totally agree. That's my thoughts when I first saw it
@@matthewsammut3253Same here
Couldn't see the palm prints on the rear window?
Does full comprehensive car insurance differ between hybrid and non hybrid models.
You guys are lucky to have more choices
Smooth and refine because it's got a ZF 8 speed auto transmission
its quicker than my old 2020 sr5 hilux and my 2022 pro4x, super quite inside, love it, dont need large towing, just yammy jet ski love it, nice car people, get over ya china thing take ya head out of your shoe box, you may learn somthing
If they had a PHEV version with 50km EV range - it'd be perfect.
This should be a new uaz hunter 😊
Didn’t you get an under bonnet vid? Had to use a Ram TRX B-roll 😂
I'm interested to wee how reliable these things are once they have 200,000+ km on them.
Never any mention of fuel tank capacity. Important to know when calculating the range of vehicles.
75 litre
78 in believe
A great 4x4, love it
Interior design, amazing. Exterior could be better, in my opinion.
Mechanically controlled LSDs? You mean lockable diffs yeah?
If it has am/fm radio and a cd player and can fit two mountain bikes in the back then count me in.
Is GWM planning on releasing an EV version of Tank 300??
Hev
Actually I thought I was getting a PHEV as in china but no just a HEV in Australia. Probably because of Victorian taxes.@@kyliemull3709
That’s a whole lotta Rosie
7:33 But real fuel consumption is 12-14L on highway at speed 90-110km/h. Offroad - unlimited consumption)
I drtive around town and get under 9, but it took a lot of learning how to do it.

Based on what? Had a jk wrangler Rubicon 2007 and now own a tank 300 and no doubt the interior far superior but then again 16 years difference between the 2 but the JK kills the tank off road and still prefer the jeep over the tank. What's your real world experience? 😂
More like the love child between the jeep wrangler and an early ssangyong korando.
Tank 300, got to call it something I suppose.
Where is your gadget that you used to post this comment made?
Mine is Made in China.
Comparing its looks to a Mercedes G wagen is a bit of a stretch, a Jeep and a Suzuki maybe
Agree about the g wagon, there are other 4x4s closer rivals not mentioned.
The front looks a little like a Lada Niva. Sorry, but now you've seen it.
They will sell frigging loads of those things.Aftermarket mobs will salivate.
$65000 mate, not really that cheap. Feels a bit small inside. Like it, but unfortunately, it's missed the advertised price point which really is the main attraction.
$51,000 brand new at the Dealer

I just said this 5 mins ago! ;)
Let's see how it rusts on the Gold Coast
I imagine we will see, because I think they will sell a few
@@chasingcars Rust will tell 🤞
Petrol 4wd are better than petrol 2wd but that's it .
My big question is how long will it last?
Time will tell. It has a long warranty is as high as I can put it for now.
@@chasingcars What will happen after 7 years usually particular vehicles start having major problems after the warranty runs out
If it's anything like the v 240 utes ,not long at all.😂
@@TaniaThompson-vo1ll l do remember when they came and my son was working at a dealership that sold them and his opinion they were crap and l am putting it nicely they also sold Holden's and any person who worked there never bought a GWM because how bad they were and looks like they still are how many GWM Ute's still around not many l see one occasionally l do see a lot of older Hiluxes especially my 1997 Hilux
@@TaniaThompson-vo1ll How right Chinese built vehicles are not known for there longevity as are Toyota's are well known for there reliability and longevity you do realise that all Toyota's built in the past 20 years 80% are still driving around on the road they must be all around were l live because l see a lot of them including my 26 year old Hilux as for older Chinese built vehicles they are just about gone a very rare site but Toyota's they are everywhere this tells me something Toyota's are definitely built better than any Chinese built vehicles ah great advice buy a Toyota instead of some cheap Chinese rubbish
That is literally a Chinese knockoff of a Ford Bronco. Still pretty nice. I'd check it out if it were avaliable in the states.
Any evidence of this or is it just your ingrained anglo-saxon superiority complex that says the Chinese can't possibly do anything right? This attitude is exactly the reason why the Chinese are basically light years ahead now in every major industry and every major economic metric. You see the Chinese are indifferent to the people who hate them. They just go about their business without fussing while their haters spend an enourmous amount of time and energy on hating.
I'm not sure it will appeal to 'enthusiasts', by which I am guessing you mean off-road exploring type of enthusiasts. Probably alright for mum and dad type once a year trip over some dirt roads. As long as you don't want to take much camping gear or any children as the payload (for the Hybrid) is 394Kg, which is not going to cut it if you want to go exploring remote areas. At 12.5L/100 the 75L tank is only going to get you 600Kms, which is pretty poor for overland travelling.
Quite an amazing amount of aftermarket 4WD gear available for these things in China. Wonder if we'll see any of it here.
yeah, range anxiety is really bad... wait this is a ICE vehicle, just bring a can, problem solved
If only it had the payload to do that...
Lots of enthusiasts are waiting 2 years for a Suzuki Jimny
There is space under the trunk to install an auxiliary fuel tank, and there is no mileage anxiety
It seems ok but I dont like the headlamps and the grill design. Feels bit amateurs.
Comical almost. I think it looks friendly.
WoW a cheap 4wd to take it to the big boys except, you cannot tow with it, and in an abs braking situation, the rear wheels leave the ground, I mean everyone wants this right!!!!!
Bang for buck makes other cars in this segment very dated and overly priced 🤔
Made by our enemies
Weird headlights.
I do like it but have to wonder how much IP they took from other companies in order to make it. I can just tell by watching the videos that they took the mirrors from the wrangler and the air vents from the g class. It's not something I like to reward with my money.
Also there's a lot of risk in buying something like this compared to a Toyota etc.
There is no patent for automobile technology, and any high school student knows the principle! More differences come from materials, manufacturing accuracy and industrial integration! Why do some people think that the automobile industry, which has developed for hundreds of years, still has real technology patents?😅
If a country's cars are not good, it can only prove that its industrial capacity and material capacity are very poor ~😅
@user-jj6mx3tc1g it's not about patents it's about innovation. Why take the time and effort to design and iterate a product if a third party is following you and copying your every move. South Korea and Japan can make products without copying and China is much bigger, I don't understand why they think it's okay.
@@FourLowAdventuresCarefully designed? Without this kind of car, the shape of all modern cars had not been innovated 20 years ago, and there was no so-called innovation in modern times.😅
@@FourLowAdventuresModern cars are more about intelligence and interior decoration, and manufacturers with advanced technology can't have problems with hardware.😅

Just wondering how much of Biden's "Troll money " your boring comments are worth.
The catch is only has 400kg carrying capacity
And the Suzuki Jimny has a load carrying capacity of 325 to 360 kg. Doesn't seem to shorten the wait time for the punters here in Australia.
@@tempestv8 completely different market, this has 4 doors so suited to a family. Load up 2 adults and 2 kids with few accessories and you have no room for luggage or anything if you want to tow a camper. Jimmy is a single man's car or a young couple so as I said completely different cars, it's like comparing apples and oranges
@@LVNITUPM8 Fair points made. I personally see the Tank 300 as a single person's enthusiast offroader, similar to a Jeep Wrangler. When I was young and single, my first 4x4 was a Discovery Series II 5 seater version. Very similar size and I used it for touring and camping and daily driving. I see this Tank 300 in the same way.
If I want a family car, I'd wait for the Prado sized Tank 500.
My point was that people buy vehicles for certain reasons and there will be a huge queue of people buying the Tank 300 regardless of the modest load capacity, just like the group that want the Suzuki Jimny. I suspect the main market for a Tank 300 could be markets like India and Asia where small engine capacities are important due to tax reasons, and value for money.
400kg capacity? That’s the same as my Hyundai Getz 😅
