Consumate review Tom...you've come a long way from the beginning and your latest reviews I rate as in the best automotive commentary anywhere. Well done indeed 👍🙂
A very professional review. Well done. Lane Keep Assist technology is often unhelpful (and sometimes dangerous) in too many new cars. The "NCAP" tests (which are motivating manufacturers too install this) do not attempt to assess false responses, instead awarding high scores for very sensitive systems. Manufacturers will only de-sensitise systems if sales suffer. It will help if NCAP is amended to subtract points for cars that intervene too early, or fight the clearly controlled actions of a driver. As for the GWM Tank 500 - it looks as though it will be a nail in the chair of the marketing managers at Ford and Toyota. Hopefully it will get their attention, and they will turn their mind to improving the value of the Everest and Prado.
Did a test drive of this today and it's impressive - comfortable and quiet, handling okay and chassis is soft but not that floaty.. I felt better driving this than 2024 Land Rover Defender. Driver monitoring system kicked in once asked me keep eye on road but lane assist didn't intervene. A fair bit of body diving when braking which Defender doesn't have, however on defender you'd have to push accelerator to get the car moving - even with Auto-hold off. On this and all other cars, you release brake and vehicle would moving already slow, just really not used to Defender that each time to start vehicle you'd have to push acceleration throttle, could be really tiring in day to day commute... Only problem is the brand awareness - haven't seen too many of this on Sydney roads.

It rides like crap as result. Big rims and small tyres are for show, not go.
Nice honest review Tom. Thank you. I think the biggest concern is its resale value. Especially for those who finance vehicles with a balloon payment as ideally you want the vehicle to be worth more than that final payment. Taking this same approach, and opting to again refinance the balloon then you’re faced with the unknown aspect of the reliability. I agree Great Wall Motors have come a long way and it’s great they are taking feedback onboard however that doesn’t really apply to a vehicle you purchase today (unless it’s just a software update). Having locking front and rear differentials is great. However, just like most of its competitors that you see lined up for school pickup runs then it’s possibly not going to venture into an environment where having this option will actually be required.
Another great review, Tom. You absolute legend. I doubt I'd go for anything GWM in a rush after seeing the braking issue on the Tank 300. Nice work in the review world though!
'Rides and handles better than the outgoing Prado'. Are you talking about the 150 series with KDSS suspension developed by Toyota in Australia and tuned for OZ roads? Sorry pal but I find it hard to believe. I've been driving my 2010 Prado VX since new and did 350K in it and it still stacks up pretty well for ride and handling against most new ladder on frame SUV's
to be honest, outgoing Prado's ride is still pretty good but you really should test drive more recent cars, things really moving forward with technology including ride quality sector.
@@daweigo6851 Listen, dude I've never said anything about what 'most people' want or don't want. All I did was addressing a particular incorrect statement made by author of this video. Stop being a clown by posting useless comments and educate yourself about handling and suspension of Tanks and Prados (with KDSS). It's chalk and cheese. For starters: Tank 500 stopping distance 100-0 km/h is 51 m vs 37 m of the Prado. Also real life tests of Tank 300 recorded rear wheels leaving the ground during emergency braking.. I'm not saying Prado is perfect but these Chinese shitboxes are just dangerous for families and not fit for many country roads in OZ or NZ
That is what you get for driving on the wrong side of the road. Most of the world does drive on the right hand side of the road; so no wonder that car manufacturers don't convert everything to the other side for those few countries which are driving on the left hand side.
Manufacturers are going to far with driver assist, but that a deliberate action as they prepare everyone to accept FSD.... not optional... for everyone.
But LC costs a lot more. So at say 5 years, a common trade time for first owners, they might have cost the same or the Tank may even cost less. You need to do the sums to be certain. High resale is usually beneficial when comparing vehicles of similar price. You also need to consider finance cost or opportunity cost if paying cash.
Toyota is good until there's something wrong with it, used to own a Prado and the DPF issue was always dismissed by the dealer until the lawsuit, they just don't care.
The similar products from Toyota would LandCruiser, 300, and guess what, the price is almost twice of this tank 500, and less features and less luxury. With 7 years warranty, what could you get after 7 years out of this is that really matters? Even it worth nothing, comparing to land cruiser, how much is that going to worth after 7 years ? I would buy another brand new one 7 years later, and still spend less then the LandCruiser, and tell me how fast is the Chinese automobiles industry is developing? In 7 years ,what kind of technology their are going to use? And yet you still driving the out dated LandCruiser and paying the high cost of repairs to keep it going . Nah, not worth at all. I rather save the money and replace this one in 7 years with much more advanced and more developed vehicles. Because the safety technology is going to be much more advanced, and the LandCruiser today, is not going to be as safe as the one in the future
I recently embarked on a 2800 km journey with the V6 turbo engine in the Middle East from Dubai to Salalah, and it was nothing short of fantastic both on-road and off-road. The engine's impressive power and reliability made it a joy to drive in various conditions. However, the lane assist and cruise control features were somewhat frustrating, with hard braking and speed adjustments in 5 km/h increments, along with steering wheel control buttons that weren't used for vital features. Despite these minor issues, which an OTA update could easily fix, the pros significantly outweigh the cons. It's surprising that this exceptional engine isn't available in Australia, given its remarkable performance.
These numptys in the comments clearly haven't ever been anywhere remote in this country. Clearly fail to notice that the moment you leave any city and get to the outback all you see are Patrols and Land Cruisers. The government is going to take these reliable work horses away from this country's hardest working class. The class that feeds the rest of us. Forced to buy some over compressioned 4 cylinder that craps the bed after the warranty ends but hey at least it uses less carbon on paper but only lasts half as long as the old V8 Diesel 70 series.
@@supaahflyy Who feeds us in this country? farmers. Where do they live? Remote. What to they drive 99% of the time? Land Cruiser or Patrol. Who will these regulations hurt the most? Oh right the ones who live remotely and require a big reliable engine like a V8 in the 70s/100/200/Y61/Y62 LC and Patrols to make it home.
Payload is an issue. Safety systems are dictated by ADR and ANCAP 5star rating requirements, so don't blame manufacturers for those. It's the poor implementation that they own. And gwm aren't alone in that area. All the manufacturers have issues.

When you arrogantly take a swipe at the safety features which are ANCAP tested, and advocate other people to do the same, you're not doing anyone any favours. I've been driving for over 40 years, in that time I've had a few near misses either drifting off the road or out of my lane. I also know someone who had a microsleep and drove off the road. Whereas in all that time I've never had a semi trailer come towards me in my lane that I needed to avoid, and even if it was to happen you could still avoid it with firm hands. From my experience and I'm sure also backed statistically most people are much better off with the safety assistance on rather than turned off. Until you have actually researched this area properly, you might be doing a lot of people a disservice by complaining about the safety features and encouraging peopto override it.
Safety has its place, yes. I say that journos criticise distraction monitor, but with some justification. They need to take into account they are looking away a lot to describe features to us, look at camera etc., hence system activates. Someone actually focused on their driving may not find it too intrusive. Having said that, the driving aids can be detrimental too. Fact: I'm driving south on M1 just north Port Macquarie. I need to pull over to rectify an issue with my caravan, hence I'm looking for a safe place to accomplish this, hence utilising my mirrors to monitor approaching traffic (110 klm zone). What I witnessed was totally incomprehensible. A massive dust cloud erupted in the centre island between the north and south bound lanes, ironically exactly as I found a safe location to stop. I begin to walk back to incident, a Isuzu dmax ute now facing south appears from the dust, two vehicles headed nth also stopped, alighted from vehicles but they didn't render assistance, they got back in vehicles and drove off. I arrive to find a chap in total shock alighting from dmax. Aside from shock he's okay, so I set about attempting to clear debris from nth bound lanes of traffic, steel rope that divide Nth/Sth lanes had been struck, they'd been pulled from mountings and recoiled across nth bound lanes being struck by totally unfazed drivers, rocks, vehicle parts etc. being flung skywards as struck. Whilst clearing the lanes and dodging traffic I draw the attention of a passing ambulance whom illuminated their lights pulled to centre and finally traffic began to slow down. I pointed out the shocked driver required attention and remained clearing debris from the road. Metal components were the front right wheel, shattered into pieces after being entwined with steel cables, disc brake pads, calliper,, lots of plastics etc. I was now able to enquire about the driver, he's just in total shock, no idea what happened. Ambulance radio for police, soon enough 3 highway patrol cars have crash scene safe. Turns out, the dmax is brand new, just collected from Port Macquarie dealership, so it's new experience for the driver. Ambulance officers advise police that they believe the driver has been caught out by 'Wait for it', "Lane Keep Assistance" he's tried to swap lanes fort with the steering, it's given in, hence big right swerve straight into safety steel ropes. Lane Keep Assist was the direct cause of the incident. Now, my question is, Why did he swerve? If you recall, I mentioned two nth bound vehicles stopped initially, but didn't render assistance. My theory is, they caused the incident, I suspect one caused the dmax driver to have to swerve taking evasive action, no time to utilise indicators to eliminate lane keep assist. Just one incident I witnessed caused by a safety feature. Imagine if he'd just deactivated that "Lane Keep Assist" by a single touch of a button on the steering wheel, he'd safely continued his journey arriving home in his new truck, all be it a bit rattled if my theory was correct. The safety feature that did work that day, the steel rope divider, it captured his vehicle stopping him crossing at speed into oncoming traffic.
Not the car for you, more for people open to other brands and new ways of doing things, many people see thru the Toyota at all costs mentality, including the Australian judicial system when Toyota Australia lost a class action law suit due to faulty engines in hilux etc

Good to see car manufacturers pushing the envelope. The incumbents have been resting on their laurels for some time now.

One word… Depreciation. Especially against the mighty Land cruiser that holds its value like gold bullion.
After all those fake Japanese crush tests results it’s not going to hold it’s value for too long
But LC costs a lot more. So at say 5 years, a common trade time for first owners, they might have cost the same or the Tank may even cost less. You need to do the sums to be certain. High resale is usually beneficial when comparing vehicles of similar price. You also need to consider finance cost or opportunity cost if paying cash.

@@selmersoprano but the resale value is phenomenal

Blame ANCAP for being a nanny.
GWM should bring in the plug-in hybrid version. V6 is only for middle east countries and China.
China don’t care about emissions 😅
Why not take it off road?
The new emission regulations are disgusting and self destructive to the average Australian's interest.

Fact:
I'm driving south on M1 just north Port Macquarie.
Now, my question is,
Why did he swerve?
