I got an Xperia 1 iii 15 months ago, and a 1 v three months ago. I chose this phone for a number of reasons, one of which was the capacity to control the camera settings, as opposed to basically all other smartphones which decide for you how your pictures will look like. I’m a beginner to photography and both your videos - even the first one you don’t like - were perfect to understand what those settings are about and to allow me to use the camera as it is supposed to be. Much appreciated and many thanks..
You're very welcome and I'm really glad it has helped you understand the manual settings 👍 the best tip I can give you now is to go out there and practice, practice and practice some more 😊 that's how I started myself, the more effort you put into it the better your get at it, have a good day 👍
My vacation starts at the end of the week so now I have time to take photos again. Guess what I will be watching first (rubbing my hands together with glee). So happy I bought the 1 V.
Well done. That MR i havent figure out yet but i will try again. I have messed a lot with the M-mode and got a lot of cool photos. Im using the 1iii now but the 1VI is preordered. If you can do some tricks f With the cinema mode then you covered the most with these experias.
Thank you for this great video. A very useful and informative video for me. Thanks to you, I learned many things I was curious about. Now I will be able to take better photos!
Thank you so much for the kind words and I'm really glad it helped you out 😊 that's the main aim of this channel, to help people take their photography game to the next level not having to splash out thousands on expensive camera equipment when what they have in their pocket is good enough nowadays :)
@@UpsideLens I really appreciate your effort. As someone who loves taking photos, I bought the Xperia 1 V device. Until today, I had only learned a few settings and features, but thanks to your channel and videos, I now know more. Now I will take my 1 V device and go out to take photos with what I learned from this video. Thank you again.
Unfortunately I won't be getting the VI too many downgrades, for me anyway, in the areas that I needed it to be improved. Sony turned a photo enthusiast phone into just another mainstream phone and left us photo enthusiasts behind. The main reason I will not touch the VI is because of the software, too dumbed down, less productive and too cluttered and less options. The macro mode is lagging way behind the competition, the main sensor is still the same sensor as the 1 V, the 1080p screen instead of a QHD one is a big slap in the face too, especially at the price point of this phone ! It's a hard pass for me and I would still recommend the 1V over the 1VI anyday, shame really but that's the direction Sony is going it would seem ! I am making the switch to a different device which will all be revealed in next week's video 👍
@mitismee unfortunately they have changed the UI completely, now the viewfinder is cluttered with icons and sub menus everywhere, photo pro mode is more like an iPhone photo app and completely counter productive vs the "real" photo pro app they had on the V which is still to this date the best camera UI any phone has out there, they had to go and ruin that to please mainstream market. The continuous zoom is very soft and the macro mode is a joke compared to the competition. No ability STILL to shoot at full sensor size in RAW , and recycled main camera sensor from the 1V, Sony's own 1 inch sensor would have worked marvel as well as exmor sensors all around but it isn't the case. Once again very disappointed ESPECIALLY at that eye watering price point !
Thank you for making this is video. It's very useful and easy to learn. What are your views on the add-on lenses (such as Moment lenses) and is it beneficial for the Xperia 1V? Thanks again.
I personally wouldn't use "add on" lenses, it just degrades the quality that little bit more. Camera filters, yes, all day long but those lenses, not for me. I do know of a few people that do use them though but not my cup of tea. 👍
around 9:00 i have a guestion that i just found out with my xperia 5ii just like a few weeks ago ( i already had the phone for years but i didnt know). now with the standard camera app on the xperia 5ii i have burst off in the menu so i cant make burst shots with the physical shutter button (which is kinda okay)., but i just found out if i pushed the on screen button and hold it did switch to burst mode, an amazing double function basically which i really love. but does your 1v has that too in the basic mode? sometimes its just weird luck to find out some options on xperia hahaha wtf.
I'll be honest I haven't actually tried burst in Basic mode, it's probably clear from my guide that I really don't spend a lot of time in basic mode when shooting actual photos. I literally only used the basic mode to show the other half my lunch or taking pictures of the pet and that's about it lol
@@UpsideLens i see yes. Im just a basic bitch i guess. 98% of my photos are in the standard photo app. I rarely used the photo pro. But i love the software. I have tried a lot with it and because of that i learned a lot about photography, shooting in raw and editing a bit. I also use rawrherapee now on pc. But seldom. I think its just too much of a hassle (in that sense im just a everage phone user). I was just wondering haha. Standard mode is just easy quick. Point and shoot almost. But yeah...
@namelesssnitchy in that case I'd use the AUTO mode rather than the basic mode, Basic mode like I said in the video compressed the jogs way too much, so you're better off suing the AUTO mode and have it set to take both RAW and JPG and when you feel like it you can edit your favourite ones 👍
Is it possible to customize the app in the other modes so one doesn't have to use the physical button to take a photo, but have that touch / circle onscreen button just like in the Basic mode ?
Great vid. I have the RX10M4 and RX100M3 so it all looks very familiar. It is very tempting. I have the Galaxy s24 Ultra. Great camera but the speakers let it down. As well as a great camera app and good speakers....tempting.
The 1V is an exceptional camera phone, it's not perfect of course and had some gripes with certain things and wish it did things differently at times but overall a cracking phone, unlike the VI which seems to have left its soul behind sadly ! Having said that there are other options outside of the Samsung / apple and Sony's of the world. I'll be sharing my thoughts on that in next Saturdays video 👍
Thank you very much, finaly easy to understand video. I will probably watch it different times. 😅 The only thing I miss in this phone is macro. When I shoot in main camera, and put 2x it looks ok, it's almost macro. 😂 The new Xperia 1 VI got good macro, but spend another 1 300 euro it's out of question.. We'll see what Xperia 1 VII brings to table next year. 😁
Thank you so much for the kind words 😊 I didn't touch on the subject of macro in this video purely because put simply the 1V isn't too great at focusing at short distance. I have done some close up shot in my previous videos and to that effect I used the telephoto lens with a little bit of distance and the results weren't too bad but not "macro" as such. I'd try avoiding the 2x as it's just a digitally zoomed in 1x hence pretty consequent loss of quality.
@@UpsideLens You're welcome, I just liked and subscribed, and save the video, so I can watch it again. I didn't notice that huge loss of quality (on 2x), it's just 12 mp crop on 48 mp sensor it doesn't look bad, but it's not proper macro. Im just curious, what do you think about new Xperia 1 VI? 😊
@Lyraxhaze the 2x is not a sensor crop like on the 5V or the VI. It's a zoomed in image of the 1x just like if you went in Photoshop and cropped it yourself. Regarding the 1 VI I will not be getting it, they have made a "pro" photo enthusiast device a mainstream phone now 😔 the clutter of the new photo app and lack of pro features is a big step back. Very disappointed.
I really like this camera interface, plus this phone maintains the other cool video apps on the phone, the organization and interface make it look like a real camera but in the new 1VI they have completely eliminated this interface :( in previous phones like The 1V, 5V and PRO-I interface will be maintained so this video actually helps a lot, thank you
I'm glad it helped and I couldn't agree more with you ! The photo pro app was the best UI out of any phone BUT Sony has just changed that for the worse (to me anyway, that's only my opinion) now I'd be careful just in case Sony decide to update the previous phone with this horrible new app 😅
@@UpsideLens I was informing myself about them these days, it seems that on the official Sony website in Japan the old models (1V, 5V and PRO-I) appeared as compatible, but they quickly corrected it because it was an error, and this new interface is only available In the 1VI, luckily they are sure to update the camera apps without changing the interface for the moment, but the new modes such as Macro or human posture detection seem to only be available for the 1VI. But it's strange, because they use the same main and wide-angle camera sensors as the last generation, so it seems that unless the 1VI's AI is going to be very important, those modes could perfectly arrive with an update and they are simply covering these new modes forcing us to buy the new phone to have those modes
@PabloGil. Nothing new here , Sony did this exact same thing when they enabled the 2x 48mm sensor crop on the 5V but never updated the flagship 1V with this feature... And funny enough the feature made it to the 1VI even though it has indeed the very same exmor T sensor 🤦
@PabloGil. Completely different to the implementation on the 5V, the 5V does a sensor crop , this exact feature was left out of the 1V (even though they had claimed it would be ported !!) instead the 1V indeed has a 2x but just digitally zooms on the 1x camera, making it a much worse quality
Purely because tapping is a less efficient workflow when you have no shutter button on screen when in landscape mode and you still have to use the physical shutter button anyway. Much quicker to half press on a subject, recompose and shoot
@@UpsideLens I was about to ask the same question, I would often use Tap to focus and Brightness, you can for example, set your exposure, lock it, then focus on another part of the screen . But I guess youve answered that as takes too long. Also, what is difference between tap to track, and being in AF-C mode? Both are for moving objects. One other thing Ive noticed is that the metering mode doesnt do anything in Manual . Its all down to setting ISO and shutter speed as you said in video. Sorry this is a bit rambling, enjoyed the video.
I have the Sony Xperia 1 V (Not surprising with being a Sony channel myself) and I love PHoto pro in its creative modes. Shame about the 1 VI though as so far it looks like its sold out their base fans for the sake of selling more units, the VI camera interface is rat her lame, but the 1V though is awesome!

Oh it is 48mm but digitally zoomed that is. The 5V has a 48mm via sensor crop which is closer to what you get with a separate lens (not quite as good but still much better than what the 1V has)
