  • I’ve been wanting to replace an older outlet and weatherproof outlet cover for some time now, so why not make a video about it? I installed a weather resistant outlet (which are required for outdoor installations) and a new weatherproof cover to go with it. I’m glad I got the old out and the new in. Thanks for watching!

    Another electrical install done the RIGHT way. Thank you for not back stabbing. It's annoying how many people take the easy way out and just shove the wire into that connector and call it a day.

      I appreciate hearing that! Thank you! Yeah, it’s crazy how manufacturers don’t seem to improve them, and some electricians don’t seem to know or care.

      @@ExitSign250 I had to renovate a part of my house which involved a replacement of some outlets and switches. All of which were backstabbed and I was so annoyed that I just went out and bought new fixtures I didn't even bother trying to remove the wire. It wasn't until I was putting everything back that I realized that the electrician that was working on everything used 2 different sized plates. Some places had the larger covers while the rest were smaller. I guess he just put whatever he felt like it.

    Great video! I would suggest not using the silicone caulking though. It makes it a pain to replace the weather proof box, also moisture could become trapped and build up behind the caulking if you don't get a perfect seal. That is why the gasket is porous.

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  10 місяців тому +2

      Thank you very much! I have been told by other experienced people, as well as found out myself, that overtime these gaskets will deteriorate and begin to allow water/moisture through. I use the silicone caulking to provide a more durable seal. Plus sometimes mounting surfaces aren’t completely level, such as in the case of brick. And the gasket may not be able to flex enough to seal the box. Again hence the silicone use also.

    I had old metal outside cover over the receptacle, wired into GFI line. My Wifi power is also plugged into that GFI line in the garage, so when it rained it tripped the line and out goes the wifi! I needed to install the weather resistant receptacle and the cover as well...

    Great video. I personally like to use a circuit breaker locator when I do installations. Good tip on the silicon and using the screw connections. I hate those old electrical plates as well, too many of them fail.

      I have a circuit breaker finder, and I use it a while ago to rename each breaker, so I knew what breaker was the right one. Yeah, those plates are too common and aren’t the best. I like the Hubbell one, and similar models. A lot heavier duty.

    I live in a 7 year old house which has a gfi outlet in my lower level patio level.It has a plastic cover kind of like the one in your video although a little larger...still only contains one outlet under the cover. I recently had some work done on the patio and when the contractor had left i found that they had pulled the cover pretty much off of the outside wall of the house. Im not that handy but i discovered that when the original install was done the electrician only connnected the outlet to the blue outlet box. The outlet cover was not screwed in or connected to anything other than by a thick line of silicone caulk! Anyway i proceeded to find out that the electric outlet top and bottom screws do NOT line up with the holes you screw them into in the blue outlet wall box.It looks like the GFI outlet is actually too large for the blue box which is why they dont line up. I want to not only line them up but also screw the outlet in place while also screwing the outlet cover base plate into the outlet box so that they cant be pulled out like last time. My question is whether or not these actual outlets of the type i need come in different sizes because this outlet definitely doesnt line up with the wall blue box. I hate to call an electrician on something as simple as this but Im not sure what to do at this point . I can replace both the outlet and/or the outlet cover if i have to but i cant replace the blue outlet box. Appreciate any helpful advice you can offer. I did manage to use a saber saw to enlarge the opening in my hardiplank which was also contributing to my inability to fit the oulet into the wall and connect it to the box. Thanks for any help you can provide. Very high quality video.

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  3 роки тому

      Thank you! I’ll try my best to help you out. All outlets and switches as well as electrical boxes are a standard size. And in regards to the box’s hole spacing, that is also standard. Meaning they only come in one size. The only thing I can think of is the blue box is being pressed upon by something which is making it flex and not being the correct size/shape. The blue boxes are made of plastic which is why they can be deformed easily. Typically outdoor outlets/switches/fixtures have metal boxes installed when the device is flush. Metal boxes are much more heavy duty compared to the plastic box. If this is the case that the blue plastic box is deformed, I’d suggest (if you feel comfortable) to try and see what is causing it to be the way it is. It may be a bit difficult since it is flush mounted. Hope this helps and I can try to assist more if needed.

    My friend, you did an excellent job! Just a friendly tip. It’s always good practice to ground the box. I always wire nut pigtails. The ground ties to the pigtail to the box and the second goes to the receptacle. I love how you used the silicon on the weatherproof cover! Also, how many double (Tandem) breakers do you have in your panel?

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  4 роки тому

      Thank you! Actually, I originally was going to ground the box as I noticed that too. However, during the recording process, I used a continuity tester to show how the box is not bonded to ground and I received a dead short to ground. I’m not sure if the box is grounded on the opposite side of the wall, or what. But I cut that section out of the video and moved on with the replacement. Also to answer your question about the double breakers, there are 9 in my panel.

Most conventional outdoor covers are fully weatherproof unless being used, while the in-use cover remains weatherproof even with things plugged in. Also about your question, it really just depends. 10 gauge is thick for an extension cord. Most cords are 16 gauge. You’d need to find the current draw of the pumps, (amps or watts) then determine if the cord is the correct spec.

    There's that four letter word again! CODE is more about supporting an organization than your safety! The NFPA /NEC publishes millions of dollars worth of books annually. Last time I checked the NFPA had 600 permanent employees? With regard to this video; Why is a weather resistant outlet required behind a weatherproof outlet cover? Because the NEC needs changes in order to require a new issue every two years at a cost of $125, $190 with tabs?? Why not publish the NEC in a binder style. That way you would only need whatever pages contain changes every two years?? There are about 8 fatalities annually associated with residential outlets.

      Regardless of your opinion on if codes are for safety or for manufacturers profit, it is the law in most areas and must be followed. I do agree with some codes being a little excessive, but most are for safety purposes.

    "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt". (Lincoln) Your disclaimer stating this video was for entertainment proved prophetic. I have 57 years experience as an electrician and seldom is my opinion involved in any thing related to that. My original comment was based on facts that I researched, albeit briefly. America needs more law abiding citizens to maintain the status quo? FYI Your "wire cutters" are referred to as wire strippers by electricians. Also, that metal device box is required to be grounded??

    • @ExitSign250
      @ExitSign250  Рік тому

      I really don’t know what you are trying to prove. Code is the law and must be followed. Does that mean we all have to agree with it? Not at all.
      My disclaimer was legal advice given to me and to relieve me of any liabilities. You would understand if you made electrical videos like I do.
      I’ve never heard of anyone get upset about what tools are called… That’s a first and honestly funny to read.
      And that box had continuity to ground. I had a segment in the video discovering and discussing this but cut it out due to time constraints.
